BMW May Sell Engines to Rivals

We’ve heard this rumor before. The story goes that BMW is looking for ways to increase profit. One potential source of income is to sell some of it’s award winning engines to other auto manufacturers. Here’s an excerpt from a recent Automotive News piece on the topic:

BMW will decide by the end of the year if it will sell engines and other components to rival automakers, Friedrich Eichiner, the carmaker’s board member for corporate and brand development, said.

When asked if BMW is talking to General Motors, Daimler and Fiat about supplying engines, Eichiner said: “We are talking with those companies you mentioned.”

It’s worth noting that BMW has already stated that it’s iconic inline six or M developed power-plants wouldn’t be considered for sale.

Not sure how I feel about this, but one thing for sure all the aforementioned companies could really stand to have BMW technology under the hood. Could be a good source of revenue though.

I will expand upon this later but what I have heard is that it will be V8 motors or 4 cylinders that are not in the US market otherwise. In other words the current 5.0 liter V8 which will be replaced across the entire model line up by the 55 twin turbo may be the likely candidate for an engine to be offered by other manufacturers. Still confirming this but it makes more sense as we move forward.

well it’s been done before - witness early Ford Tempo diesel w/BMW 4cyl 2.0l diesel lump, or Lincoln MK 7 w/BMW 2.4l 6cyl diesel.
