Just a housekeeping thing, but you'd have thought BMW would have already trademarked pretty much every possible permuation of 3 digit model codes, such as 555i.

Although, to be even more of a pedant, I wonder how 555 will go in countries where tobacco advertising is banned, haha!

It's too bad this engine didn't make it into the new E90/E92 M3. One thing I dislike about the new M3 is its low mileage figures. I'm hoping that the dual-clutch 7-speed transmission has slightly better figures so that it can avoid the gas-guzzler tax which the manual 6-speed transmission incurs. The extra torque would be nice at low revs as well, compared to the racy M3's engine.

Greg: …you’re saying that the 555i will debut this fall as a 555i–maybe August production/September delivery timeframe? I’ve got a 550i on order for May delivery and this will change things quite a bit.

Any thoughts that the new iDrive pictured on your site will trickle up to the 555i?

BTW…your site is without a doubt the finest of its kind–well done, friend!

Greg, some sites reported earlier this year (1/08) that the 5 series would see a 5.5l engine. That was just flat out wrong. What we have come to learn is that there will be a 555 using the twin turbo. The launch date is a bit fuzzy but we were originally steered towards this fall(production usually stops each August and picks back up in September for a mid-September launch) The main issue is that the new iDrive is supposed to premier in the new 7 in October so that changes things a bit.... will that be held back until after Paris is the question. What we do know is that there will be a beast of a car in the 555 available in the future and indications are for the fall. Like all things BMW stuff can change at a moments notice so do not let that stop you from a purchase. The current 550i is an amazing vehicle.
Thank you for the compliments and we hope we can help you and all the Bimmer lovers out there be well informed in a fact based manner.

I'd love to see the 555i take on a M5.... even though it doesn't have limited slip the 555i should provide a fairly even matchup if the two cars are to be tested in manual form....even though the 555i doesn't have a limited slip it has less weight and more torque which should make a world of difference
