BMW to Add a Brand

This is not new news but it is interesting to see that BMW is still looking to add another brand. It was rumored BMW was to buy Volvo sometime last year; this never materialized because BMW felt that Volvo was not a good fit for what they need in a fourth brand. Other options still remain; including resurrecting the Triumph moniker that BMW owns. Lotus joining the party sounds good to me! Forbes:

BMW CFO says group still considering fourth brand - FRANKFURT (Thomson Financial) - Bayerische Motoren Werke AG is continuing to consider whether it will set up a fourth brand as part of its long-term growth strategy, chief financial officer Michael Ganal said in an interview with Euro am Sonntag. He said that to ensure long-term growth, it is not enough for BMW to tighten costs and that it must also consider increasing its revenues, adding a fourth brand ‘remains absolutely conceivable’. At present, the group has the BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce (other-otc: RYCEY.PK - news - people ) brands.

Is Lotus really on the table, or are you just being whimsical? The Prince engine in an Elise/Exige body is a tantalizing proposition.

While I’d love to see BMW buy Lotus (the only reason a Lotus won’t be my next toy is distance to dealer; BMW buying Lotus would potentially fix that), it doesn’t really fit in with “ensuring long-term ,tightening costs and, increasing its revenues”. Lotus is a niche car (although a damned fine one), and when it first came to the States, everyone wanted one, and many bought them, only to realize that this is a street legal race car, not a practical daily driver. Throw in the hard to get at mid-engine layout, which is not a BMW forte, (and relatively high dealer service costs), and it’s even less attractive. The result was a bunch of used ones available 1-2 years after release, with some fantastic bargains…I don’t think this would be what BMW would be after.

A relatively more civilized Triumph, however, would make more sense. It wouldn’t be as big as the new Mini–simply because it wouldn’t be practical–but it could find a nice little niche to stimulate growth.

Nothing indicates that Lotus is in the plans, but it would be a nice treat to have a lighter BMW with a four cylinder and/or a diesel to increase those fleet averages!

About BimmerFile

BimmerFile is dedicated to bringing you the most interesting news, links and reviews related to the BMW brand and it's vehicles.

We believe in the old school BMW ownership experience. We believe in garage nights with a six pack and some friends. We believe in 2002s, in E30 M3s and E34 540s with the 6 speed. We believe in progress in both design and engineering but we haven't lost sight of what made the brand and its products great all those years ago. And yes, we believe in the manual transmission.

We long for the days of the wave and for the days of roll-up windows. Yet we love the gadgets on the inside and the xenons on the outside.

In short, we can't get enough of BMWs. This is BimmerFile.
