Why don’t BMW include a WiFi connection so that interfacing to the iDrive from home would be easy as long as you have WiFi at home and the garage is near enough to the WAP. That seems very sensible and cheap as long as they implement in a recognised manner not to BMW non-standards!! Your BMW with an IP address!

Im a tech at BMW, and there are too many things to go wrong.. i hope BMW worked all the bugs out. And have a Tech setting over ride or something.. so when its at teh shop we can turn everything off..

Scott, We thank you for your post and would some day love to review some of your products! This patent will not apply much to the 2009 system as you put it, what is nice to see is that BMW will be considering two way communication with the car and the option for updates. If 1/100th of that makes it I would be very pleased! BMW has not updated the iDrive concept over an extended period of time and this is at least showing that the wheels of change are turing and that the will be other ways to enter info into the car. Connected Drive is just the beginning and the future is bright!

You have to remember that most of this is patent text. Automakers and suppliers have sometimes THOUSANDS of patents with stuff like this. It does not mean even 1/100th of it will be in 2009 iDrive.

We have an iDrive 5 series. Its useless to dangerous. The ability to do all this customization is useless if basic functionality while driving is absent.

I figured out all of the features of the iDrive for my 2004 545i while sitting in the car waiting on the paperwork to be finalized. It's not that difficult and it's not absolutely necessary in order to operate the car. If you don't have the mental capacity or the patience to figure it out then just keep mashing the buttons on the dash, no one will fault you for that.

I can't wait for this to roll out!

The iDrive has always been awesome. I had it in my 2002 745i Series and I loved it. I also loved it in my 2003 and 2005 750iL.

What sucked was the 2002 7 series. That is why I ended up with a replacement 2003 model.

Forgot to mention; how about a Bluetooth setup that regognizes to bluetooth devises in the car. I have to carry 2 phones. I have a Bluetooth headset that I use that recognizes 2 bluetooth phones.

But what if you had a laptop and phone and wroked from your car all day.

What if you and your wife were in the car on a trip, both phones could be answered, etc.

My 2007 530i has iDrive and I don't have any problems with it. Granted that I use the NAV, Heads up display, Satellite radio and voice commands so I am not limited to the iDrive screen and puck control. My software was updated a few months ago which simplified the selection menus. Being able to set & review these settings from home would be great! GPS tracking and warning sound effects might even justify a BMW for my son when he gets old enough.

OnStar does a great job with reporting and the emails for service status, but there isn't anything that can be customized by the owner.
