US Bound Diesels Confirmed for November

We heard from a few readers about a rumor that BMW’s US bound diesel line-up was rumored to be delayed until next year. While we could certainly see that as plausible given that these are new models with entirely new components (urea injection anyone?) we still thought it odd that BMW USA had just released information about both models for a fall release.

It turns out our concerns were justified. Cars.com blogger (and longtime friend of BimmerFile) Dave Thomas has confirmed with BMW USA that the 335d and the X5 35d will be starting production in September with sales to start in November.

Who’s Irv Robinson? Is he connected with BMW corporate? This information came from head of BMW USA PR Tom Plucinsky.

Gabe, the keyword is PR. The information came from corporate also, nothing related to Irv, but I will email him and ask about his sources.

There was the mention that while production is beginning in sept and sales start in November supply will be tight at the dealer side until early in 09. The fact remains though, that they’ll be on sale in November.

I have been hearing from our sources at NA since mid June that the car (335d) would be here by ,December at the latest. Horatiu had broke the news that it would be October and I honestly had hoped that was true and still there was nothing “official”. I have a feeling that the X5d is the bigger issue… and that may be a bit behind schedule and from what Thomas has stated indicates that it will be available for order after the 335d which would put it at the end of November and then hitting dealers towards the Holiday season, possibly bumping things for the majority to after the New Year. Notice how we have not seen spy shots of the X5d…..

As for “Irv”, he is a great guy I am sure but he more than likely read that on his former blog and took it as fact, heck I would too. I know many well connected Client Advisors and have for many years and most will tell you that they know some inside stuff but it is not always accurate or is something you already knew…. BMWNA keeps them out of the loop real well and of late they are even more out of the loop as BMW is trying to find the leaks that keep us all going!

All I know is that the people I trust have been saying the same things for sometime and the fact the car will be at the LA show and available for sale then says it will be. As far as the number of cars, who knows, I am sure they are not planning on moving a lot of these at this point. I was planning on getting a 335d in January.

Michael, Irv has some good connections also :) He just likes to keep things for himself, since it puts him in a bad spot. He was the first CA to be invited at the ED office in NJ. But like I said, he doesn’t disclose much :) Btw, he saw the 335d in Chicago two weeks ago and get to play with it. Yeah, I know, no photos for us.

But anyway, I really hope that October/November predictions will become true. We’re still waiting anxiously for the prices.

I don’t know Irv personally and I have nothing bad to say about him; In 2007 My CA and I went to the ED department in NJ to take care of finalizing my car (530XIT) as it was going to get bumped to the 08, which I did not want… As for Irv seeing the 335d I am sure he enjoyed that and it is a shame he could not have taken some photos for everyone but we now have some photos of it so everyone can ENJOY!

BMW had a “Ride & Drive” event for Client Advisors this past spring. It was for the M3 and 1 series, but participants also got to drive the 335d and the X5d. They were the European versions, but I am confident they will be very similar in terms of performance.
The cars are amazing! These events are usually well attended by the Client Advisors at your local BMW dealerships. So I am sure they have more to describe to you than just “seeing them and playing with them”. INCREDIBLE TORQUE, NO exhaust smells at all. You can put you nose right up to the tailpipes and it smells like a dryer sheet. It will be worth the wait!

About BimmerFile

BimmerFile is dedicated to bringing you the most interesting news, links and reviews related to the BMW brand and it's vehicles.

We believe in the old school BMW ownership experience. We believe in garage nights with a six pack and some friends. We believe in 2002s, in E30 M3s and E34 540s with the 6 speed. We believe in progress in both design and engineering but we haven't lost sight of what made the brand and its products great all those years ago. And yes, we believe in the manual transmission.

We long for the days of the wave and for the days of roll-up windows. Yet we love the gadgets on the inside and the xenons on the outside.

In short, we can't get enough of BMWs. This is BimmerFile.
