BMW’s in Extreme Weather

(Yes, they still work)

Chicago this morning

Yes, but barely. Here in Cincinnati, where it was +8F this morning, the window on my E92 froze in the closed position, and I had to warm up the car to get the door closed properly. Those frame-less windows are sexy, but not real practical in cold climates!

I was impressed. I’m here in Chicago as well and Jessica started right up. I do park in the garage, but it’s not heated and was still plenty cold. Also, my car is barely 6 months old and has less than 7,000 miles on her. I’d have been really ticked if it didn’t start well. I’ve had her parked outside all day here at the office – hopefully still will start up with no issues.

Based on the needles and the design that can only be a E46 ZHP.

I was doing well over 100mph in an E70 X5 with it registering 7 degrees. Still was rock solid and running smoothly.

Won’t be too rock solid when you slide on an icy road going “well over 100mph.”

Wow that is a low mileage ZHP! In my neck of the woods it was a balmy 8 above, the 530xiT was just fine. I fired the beast up (///M3) and needless to say that engine was a bit rough and did not like the bitter cold in the unheated garage…. let it run for a bit once she was happy and then shut her down for a nap. I need my 1200 mile service sometime in the next week!

The last couple of nights we have seen -25 C which is about -13 F and my ‘04 745i starts like it was mid summer. The car warms up quickly, and the heated seats and steering wheel warm me up in only a few blocks. I park outside so the car gets the full blast, and I think it’s a great winter car. Yeah, the windows sometimes won’t open, but this has happened to almost every car I have owned, and I have owned 5 dozen or so over the years.

The roads were dry. Was just a very cold morning. We were actually just passing the Salt Flats too :)

My e34 with 207,000 miles takes a few minutes to heat up when it drops to the teens. I get the window sticking issue at first but after she warms up a bit everything is fine. The bun warmers help make up for this

About BimmerFile

BimmerFile is dedicated to bringing you the most interesting news, links and reviews related to the BMW brand and it's vehicles.

We believe in the old school BMW ownership experience. We believe in garage nights with a six pack and some friends. We believe in 2002s, in E30 M3s and E34 540s with the 6 speed. We believe in progress in both design and engineering but we haven't lost sight of what made the brand and its products great all those years ago. And yes, we believe in the manual transmission.

We long for the days of the wave and for the days of roll-up windows. Yet we love the gadgets on the inside and the xenons on the outside.

In short, we can't get enough of BMWs. This is BimmerFile.
