BMW Z4 Real Life Photos at NAIAS

Our friends at the Cars.com blog Kicking Tires have the best photos yet of the new Z4. Well worth a look:

There’s little question that this new Z4 has incredible presence. However how does it stack up against the Z3 and Z4 that came before it? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comment section.

I like it. A nice aggressive style. There’s very little to question, apart from the 3rd brake light integration, however I’m sure there’s an excellent reason; stylisticly it looks tacked on.

The 3rd brake light is mandated by U.S. law

    A very interesting question Gabe.

First let me say fantastic job Ian, some really great shots you were able to capture.

For the Z3 not to dish anybody but still to this day every time I see one on the street I expect to see it driven by a lady. I know it can be capable on the autocourse but still something about the design just feels feminine to me. The one exception to this is the Z3 coupe with its alien look was the only Z3 that was ever tempting to me.

The prior Z4 was a great basic design to me, I am in the small minority that didn’t think the flame surfacing and bubble trunk didn’t actually look that bad at all. Pretty much the engine line up was acceptable and in the M variant one of the best combo’s to date from BMW. I however can say the only that stopped me dead from buying a M Coupe every time was the BMW side repeater. Hands down one of the ugliest things to ever come from BMW. It looks like a cheap aftermarket addition.

The E89, the front end treatment really is out of this world! I love the more upright grills and the CS inspired panel lines on the front half of the car is a incredible bit of design. Pretty much love everything about the new car, one thing that still is catching my eye however is focusing on just the rear panel from the side view. I like the sweep of the upper panel line, however when taken at a full view the panel seems a tad underscale. I think this is mainly the treatment from the lower panel line headed to the tail of the car, I could have seen the transition behind the wheel to the back a little more stout.

I will be looking forward to seeing the M model once it comes out as the high revving V8 out of the M3 behind the E89 front panel lines would be fantastic. I am less happy to know this is not going to have a dedicated coupe version however, especially for a M a coupe trades off a sliver of performance and stability from a coupe.

Pretty much everything from the kidney grills back is stunning. I’m just not sold on the forward leaning grills, particularly when paired with backward sweeping headlights. Pushing both forward (a la the newer Mustangs) would be fine, and sweeping both backwards (a la most BMWs from recent years) is also fine. I just don’t like how the mixed the two.

Older BMWs up until the early 90s had the forward sweeping grill that went the entire width of the car and contained the circular headlights. These are by far my favorite BMWs, and so I’d love to see some of that “retro” (hate that word) style incorporated, I just think they did a poor job at it.

The best new design from BMW in years. It reminds me a little of the Ferrari California. The only bad thing is third brake light, and I would like to see the halos in white instead of yellow.

About BimmerFile

BimmerFile is dedicated to bringing you the most interesting news, links and reviews related to the BMW brand and it's vehicles.

We believe in the old school BMW ownership experience. We believe in garage nights with a six pack and some friends. We believe in 2002s, in E30 M3s and E34 540s with the 6 speed. We believe in progress in both design and engineering but we haven't lost sight of what made the brand and its products great all those years ago. And yes, we believe in the manual transmission.

We long for the days of the wave and for the days of roll-up windows. Yet we love the gadgets on the inside and the xenons on the outside.

In short, we can't get enough of BMWs. This is BimmerFile.
