I get your point, and I think we both agree on the root cause of the problem, but disagree that we shouldn't consider other measures to assist in enhancing safety in certain scenarios. Sure, the root problem is that we devalue being alert when driving - but that doesn't mean that there isn't value in a system that could provide an alert if a kid's bike is darting towards the street shielded by parked cars, etc.

The same argument against driving alert can be made against DSC, and granted I think we know that there are ample reasons to want to turn DSC off... but it is startlingly one of the biggest advances in safety since the advent of the seatbelt - a 33%/50% reduction in single-vehicle accidents (cars/suvs), with single-vehicle accidents accounting for about 30% of all fatal accidents (I'd have to check the numbers to be exact, but that is fairly close).

I'm not saying that this (Car-2-X) system is necessarily the way to go, but it's an interesting application of technology. What we need to figure out is how to stress better driver attentiveness? More stringent driver training/ licensing requirements anyone?

This stuff scares me... plain and simple, while it sounds good in theory it makes us all less alert and relying on tech to increase safety.

What we all should have is an implanted chip that tracks us by radio and GPS- it will communicate within a large webbed network and alert cars to our presence and have them avoid hitting us while it also provides us with a jolt of electricity (like an invisible dog fence) so we don't get hit..... great idea.

WOW- now I really went off the deep end but you get my point.

Whoa... going to have to come back and check this out. From an auto safety perspective, this is a pretty wild use of technology. I love it for kids in neighborhoods or parking lots, cyclists, etc.

Now how much does the consumer have to pay for this? Surely many will resent paying for others' safety (as it will also become a "plain ignorance protection system" - PIPS)?
