It’s Official: 4 Cylinder Diesels Coming to the US

If you’ve been reading BimmerFile over the last year you’ll know we broke the news of BMW’s plans for four cylinder diesels hitting the US market quite awhile back. However today the news was confirmed at a press event by Tom Baloga, vice president of engineering for BMW of North America by Insideline.

As we’ve mentioned, look for a version of 2.0L diesel found in the 320d and the 123d. With over 200 hp and 240 ft lbs of torque plus over 45 mpg (US) combined we can expect any version of this engine will quickly find some fans on this side of the Atlantic.

Look for the first product featuring the new diesel to be a US spec X1 hitting dealerships potentially in 2011 if our sources are correct.

Checkbook is ready for the diesel X1! Hoping to do an ED in early 2012 as we’ll be starting a family the year before and need something a bit larger than the wife’s Mini Clubman.

    Bring it over!

  • Dan

Can’t wait. What’s the reason again for the delay in the X1? It will be almost 2 years old before it’s available here.

  • Chris Chao

Agreed, Michael. A diesel X1 is what would interest me, either a turbodiesel 4-cylinder or even a 6-cylinder.

  • Fillip

Dan- I believe that BMW wants to wait until the new X3 is launched in the US before releasing the X1, the X1 will make the current X3 totally obsolete and I think they are afraid it will also hurt the launch of the new X3 if it is already on the market.

  • Dasboost

This is good news. Would love to see a diesel option in across the lineup, i.e. 1er, 3er and X3.

  • chaz

Finally. That is efficient dynamics – that is a wonderful engine. Horsepower, torque, and close to 60mpg on the highway. The 123d would be great, but X1 wouldn’t be bad.

That X1 is a jacked up version of the current wagon – I imagine it handles better than a subaru outback though. It will be a sad day when the wagon goes away.

Eh, I know a lot of folks want this engine. But me, I’ll take the torquier 6-cyl if there’s ever the choice. A 335xd wagon would be my perfect ride. I know I’ll never see it tho, so I won’t get too hung-up on it.

But when o’ when will their be a manual transmission available with the diesel, don’t know if I can wait much longer, need to upgrade my ride. Anyone heard anything?

In the 4 cylinder there will be a manual option more than likely in the US. The issue is that it (4 cyl) will not be offered anytime soon. BMWNA is still assessing the feasibility. -M

About BimmerFile

BimmerFile is dedicated to bringing you the most interesting news, links and reviews related to the BMW brand and it's vehicles.

We believe in the old school BMW ownership experience. We believe in garage nights with a six pack and some friends. We believe in 2002s, in E30 M3s and E34 540s with the 6 speed. We believe in progress in both design and engineering but we haven't lost sight of what made the brand and its products great all those years ago. And yes, we believe in the manual transmission.

We long for the days of the wave and for the days of roll-up windows. Yet we love the gadgets on the inside and the xenons on the outside.

In short, we can't get enough of BMWs. This is BimmerFile.
