It’s Official: BMW Releases the BMW Z4 sDrive35iS

MotoringFile Sections: E89 Z4 Roadster, Official News Dec 12th, 2009 16 Comments

Over the past several months we have been showing you spy shots and telling you about a rumored performance oriented version of the Z4. We’re happy to report that our sources were correct as today BMW officially launched the Z4 sDrive35is.

This new version just happens to be the one we would want (though we still would like a solid roof) because of the performance upgrades. It builds on the already well liked E89 Z4 by stepping it up a notch in areas that we enthusiast may have been a bit disappointed by. On paper this car looks like it addresses all of our initial concerns (see our review on the right of this page) with the original steering, suspension, and power. BMW is bringing the “S” back!

The horsepower of the N54 bi-turbo inline six has been up tuned to 335 hp and 332 lb-ft (367 lb-ft in overboost under full load) and is said to take the car from 0-60 in 4.7 seconds. The exhaust note is tuned to a deeper sportier sound, something that is welcomed news to our ears.

The electric power steering has been reprogrammed to impart greater feedback as has the 7 speed Double Clutch Transmission to allow for more aggressive shifts and a launch control.

The Z4sDrive35is also features an M Sport aerodynamics kit, M Sport wheels and M adaptive suspension (featuring adjustable damping and a lowered ride height). Completing the package are the M Sport accouterments throughout the interior. One thing that just is not sitting right with us is that this car come with silver mirror caps…. at BimmerFile we think of that as an “S” from a company that likes putting engines in front of the wheels. But stranger things have eventually grown on us.

While this car will perform and look great it will also do it efficiently. The BMW Efficient Dynamics inner workings on this sportier model actually allow it to have the same EPA numbers as its tamer twin turbo sibling. Brake energy regeneration (recently launched in the US with the 5 Series Gran Turismo) helps improves overall efficiency.

The M Sport Package

Also released today (and available this spring) is the optional M Sport package. Like other M Sport packages, the Z4′s will offer exterior and interior features seen on the Z4 35is but with different wheels and rear defuser.

Tonight BMWNA announced price bumps across the lineup. This is nothing new, it is somewhat of a BMW tradition to ring in the New Year with a less than one percent increase. This time it is a .4% increase per vehicle. Destination and handling was also increased but by a flat rate of $50 per vehicle. The newly launched 5 GT, and Active Hybrids will not see the MSRP price increase but will still suffer the inflated shipping charge.

BMW 740i to North America for 2011?

MotoringFile Sections: E90 3 Series, F01 7 Series, Rumor, Sales/Marketing Dec 10th, 2009 2 Comments

We are categorizing this as a rumor for the time being as it is unconfirmed. We felt that it was too juicy to push to the side and this information has some merit to it, it is not just someone guessing. We have heard from a reliable source that BMWNA is considering bringing the 740i to the US market this spring as 2011 model. This same source indicates that several other models will be introduced at that time as well. The other launches we were tipped to include the 3 Series coupe and convertible Life Cycle Impulse (facelift) equipped with an 8 Speed transmission in addition to cosmetic upgrades. We as always will keep you up to date as we hear more.

BMW’s 3.0L Twin Turbo Diesel Named to Ward’s 10 Best of 2010

MotoringFile Sections: EfficientDynamics, Official News Dec 9th, 2009 No Comments

Official Release: BMW’s groundbreaking 3.0-liter Advanced Diesel engine has again been named one of Ward’s 10 Best Engines. For the 2010 model year and the second year in a row, BMW’s sequential twin-turbo inline-6 diesel engine was elected to the 10 Best Engines list by the Ward’s AutoWorld panel of expert judges. To win a place on the 10 Best Engines list, an engine must score highly in measures of horsepower, torque, refinement, technical relevance, and comparative data.

“BMW’s EfficientDynamics strategy is focused on building greener, more fuel efficient engines without sacrificing performance. The goal was to create the most sophisticated diesel engine in the world. The re-election of BMW’s Advanced Diesel engine to the Ward’s 10 Best Engines list validates our team’s accomplishment,” said Hans Hohenner, General Manager of Drivetrain Development for BMW Group. “The 335d Sedan demonstrates that BMW vehicles have never been more environmentally friendly and very much proves that The Ultimate Driving Machine is alive and well.”

BF Review: 2010 BMW 550i Gran Turismo

MotoringFile Sections: F07 PAS, Review Dec 4th, 2009 13 Comments

The 2010 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo presents itself as an SUV that is not an SUV, a sport wagon that is not a sport wagon, a sedan that is not a sedan and lastly a coupe that is not a coupe. If it is none of those things, then what is it? That is the question a lot of people ask and there is no clear answer; it is a little bit of all of them and nothing like anything that has come before.

A different kind of car deserves a different type of review. That is exactly what we have done here at BimmerFile. For our first take on the new 2010 BMW 5 Series GT we decided to complete a review from different perspectives: from the driver, the passenger to casual onlookers and even the enthusiast. We are letting it loose tonight, the eve of the US on sale date! Read on and you’ll see what we have been working on along with the full photo set. As always we would love to hear your comments on this latest of controversial vehicles from BMW.

About BimmerFile

BimmerFile is dedicated to bringing you the most interesting news, links and reviews related to the BMW brand and it's vehicles.

We believe in the old school BMW ownership experience. We believe in garage nights with a six pack and some friends. We believe in 2002s, in E30 M3s and E34 540s with the 6 speed. We believe in progress in both design and engineering but we haven't lost sight of what made the brand and its products great all those years ago. And yes, we believe in the manual transmission.

We long for the days of the wave and for the days of roll-up windows. Yet we love the gadgets on the inside and the xenons on the outside.

In short, we can't get enough of BMWs. This is BimmerFile.
