The next generation is really still up for debate as BMW has nothing set in stone as far as engines go, it is all flexible based on EPA/CARB and EU emissions, fleet averages etc. The 3 cylinder may in fact come here if the requirements call for it, and thus make the turbo 4 the high output motor. There is also a tri-turbo 4 in the works with other inline 6s as well.</p> <p>In the future we will talk in terms of output rather than displacement or cylinders.... the future is not that far off so it is entirely possible that the 4 cylinder would be available in two different outputs.
