Gran Coupe will become a new segment for BMW as Gran Turismo spreads to incorporate the 3er and 1er , further down the line we should see another Gran Coupe variant for another model line.

The Gran Coupe Concept launched in Beijing is effectively the just-Green-lit version hence it's design status prototype. Truth be told Mercedes jumped the gun with their Shooting Break ahead of BMW.
When launched as a production car it will become a member of the 6er family and be marketed as simply BMW 6er Gran Coupe.
The Design Concept showcases how the front and rear with slight "showcar" detail changes will eventually look on the F12 6er Coupe.

As well as a Gran Coupe there is also a sister car known as BMW Design Concept Gran Turismo - "Shooting Brake" which is effectively a shooting brake of the Gran Turismo with a split tailgate similar to the X5 and a dramatically sloping Coupe like roof.

Gran Coupe and Design Concept Gran Turismo "Shooting Brake" are designed to appeal customers that want more premium concepts aswell as flexibility and individuality from choices in this segment.

not a bad design. very pretty, yet at the same time also very dull and unimaginative. and how is this a coupe in any way? i'm getting really sick of car companies calling anything and everything they want coupes

@Lava- BMW remains small and I agree that at times they seem to be spreading themselves a bit thin but the price delta they will charge for this niche vehicle will be worth the extra model. There are many people that want an $80K car to look more sporting and while offer added functionality- this is where the 6 GT would fit. VW has been successful with the CC and MB with the CLS, this is not all that different. GM cannibalized from its own sales by models that were too closely related; what BMW is doing is not the same thing

do they really have room to put something between the 5 and 7? What is this doing that either of those can't do for you? I'd understand that the 6 is supposed to be more sporting, but how much better than a 5 or M5 can this really be?

You guys are often pleading that BMW is a "small" car company. Aren't they spreading themselves a little thin here?

James May- there will be no ///M6 for 2011 as there will be no 6 at all (that is what we have been saying-Autocar did not realize the 6 will not be built for MY2011 so that is where the confusion lies).

Did BMW hire some former GM types to name this?

Gran Coupe.....wasn't that like a Buick naming convention, back in the 1970s?

Nice looking, nonetheless.

I knew there would be a 4 door 6 series. Thank you BMW this is better then the cs more affordable more likely to see one on the road. Cant wait for the M version. Although some people think there will be no m6 lol

Gorgeous. For the first time in a while, a new BMW design that I find immediately pleasing. No need to make the excuse "it looks better in person".
