EVO’s Chris Harris Rides Shotgun in the 1M

At BimmerFile we’re generally anti car mag. Of course we should say most car mags. There are those that we absolutely love and admire and Britian’s EVO definitely fits into that category. And there’s no one better at EVO (or the automotive press universe) that better combines passion, driving skill and automotive knowledge than Chris Harris. That’s why this video will likely be the best look we get at the 1M until it’s truly driven by the world’s automotive press in early 2011.

The 1M project manager that drives Chris around Ascari mentions a couple of interesting pieces of info:

  • M expects the 1M to lap the ‘Ring around 8:07. That’s 2 seconds off the E92 M3′s pace
  • M is still working on the sound of the car and hope to get a bit more glorious M noise out of the engine and exhaust
  • The set-up of the suspension is generally complete

We also have a few other nuggets of information from Chris Harris (via EVO):

  • The engine has been tuned by upgrading nothing more than the exhaust and remapping the engine.
  • He says to expect around 340 bhp
  • The car should debut in Q1 2011

    I want that car.

Strangely, I don’t. At least based upon the limited stuff I’ve seen so far. Needs a different engine.

It is a shame it is a turbo I6 rather than a high-revving NA I6, but with a more pronounced exhaust fitted the sonics should fit the bill nicely. BMW may be planning just that based on their test driver’s comment in the vid.

Otherwise, the key thing is what Chris Harris mentioned about halfway in – the size of the car is perfect and most appropriate for an M-car. Size is the best part of any 1, and something you can’t grasp by looking at the specs… the test drive is what seals the deal on the 1 series and the lasting impression is one of “just right” size exterior and interior. (By the way, I agree there is no better reviewer than Chris Harris out there currently… his driving skills alone are tops but his description of both technical and feel both on paper and on camera are what set him apart from most auto journos.)

@goat – Agreed regarding the preference for a high revving NA engine, but that does not seem to be the future direction of the M division. Let’s at least hope throttle response is immediate (as a forced induction motor can be with the long intake path), and that it pulls strongly beyond 7K rpm without the power falling off as it approaches redline.

I’ll be a little disappointed if the only engine mods are a remap and exhaust… until I drive one at least.

I don’t think they’ll leave it at just a remap and exhaust- that won’t get 1er owners to upgrade. That would be an M-Sport/BMW Performance model rather than a true ///M in my opinion.

Trust me, the ///M division and Dr. Kay really want to get this right… and the will. The car is not done.

About BimmerFile

BimmerFile is dedicated to bringing you the most interesting news, links and reviews related to the BMW brand and it's vehicles.

We believe in the old school BMW ownership experience. We believe in garage nights with a six pack and some friends. We believe in 2002s, in E30 M3s and E34 540s with the 6 speed. We believe in progress in both design and engineering but we haven't lost sight of what made the brand and its products great all those years ago. And yes, we believe in the manual transmission.

We long for the days of the wave and for the days of roll-up windows. Yet we love the gadgets on the inside and the xenons on the outside.

In short, we can't get enough of BMWs. This is BimmerFile.
