BimmerCast #28; Road America Wrap-up, E46 M3 vs 1M & the M3 CSL vs M3 GTS

We’re fresh off of an incredible weekend with BMW at Road America where we saw the RLR team take a decisive first place. But we’re also gearing up for BMWCCA’s Ofest this week and can’t help but think about the 1M and how it relates to it’s closest M rival – the E46 M3. Then our attention turns to the CSL vs the GTS ‘Ring times and which car is really better. As you can imagine Michael has an opinion and I try to talk him off the ledge. All this and more. Enjoy.

    Great show today guys, keep up the good work. Bimmercast is my personal favorite audio cast, you guys really do a great job.

    Just have to say I have been in a quandary lately also over the E46 /M and the 1M for a while. There is much to love in both vehicles and they are simular while being still unique from each other. I do think that the 1M feels to me to be the logical next step on the E46 /M. I love the E90 /M but in many ways it feels like a new direction for /M to me it feels like the percentage of luxury vs performance was moved a couple percent more into the luxury side.

    Right now I am seriously on the fence over the next car. Either a E46 /M w/ Comp. package, E86 /M, 1M, and finally either a 2004 GT2 or GT3 911.

    So many good choices!

    Add me to the list of guys with a list. It’s either the e82 1///M, e86 Z4 ///M Coupe, or e92 ///M3 next year for me. The 1///M is at the top (for now).

    Thanks for all you do, guys. The audiocast rocks! How about moving to a videocast/vlog? It’s 2010 dudes.

    I am betting a special event cast from Octoberfest. Just found out I have a huge meeting so will not be able to be there this year. I am hoping that Gabe/Michael/Matt gets us lots of info. I keep hoping for a guest appearance by the 1M. If so I am hoping the BMW guys toss the keys to one of the guys lol.

    Very harsh on the M3 GTS Michael! Probably deserved given the stratospheric price. Though I still am highly sceptical of ‘ring times. I just don’t see how comparable they are. (How about controlling for drivers tires and ambient temperatures)

    Anyway, I look forward to both of your perspectives. No one else does analysis from the purist enthusiast viewpoint like you guys.

    Can you guys do a discussion of sports car series featuring ALMS? Rules, classes. Etc Compare ALMS to Grand Am? How do the GT classes differ?

    I’ve always suspected that the rule makers can arbitrarily give advantages to certain cars, by varying the size of the restrictors, etc. Are these series offering a level playing field?
