BMW i. Get used to it because that is likely the name of BMW’s new high efficiency sub-brand. It’s not too much of a shock given that BMW had previously registered i1, i2, i3, i4, i5, i6, i7, i8 and i9 as trademarks that clearly denoted vehicle lines. But what is new is the confirmation based on registering the logo above (via Scott27). Will it stand for something (a la Isetta) or be a standalone? And speaking of options what happened to the idea of using the “iSetta” name? We’ll know more soon.
BMW has released a full 11 minutes of the 1M with a healthy sprinkling of the E30 M3 for good measure. Once you get past the typical stationary BMW exterior shots we actually get a chance to see the 1M and then both cars taking on the Ascari racetrack in Spain.
Highlights include:
The 1M driven in anger and the resulting sound
Seeing the 1M’s tail wagging around corners
And (around the 8:30 mark) when we get to see both cars on the track back to back.
As we have been reporting, BMW has green lighted the Vision Efficient Dynamics car which made its debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. There is a road worthy prototype being tweaked and tested as you read this. It features the promised three cylinder diesel and two electric motor system as originally promised. This is cutting edge technology packaged in radically styled vehicle.
The slippery exterior features BMWs new and much talked about “air curtains” to decrease turbulence and drag but the real conversation piece is the aforementioned propulsion system which is capable of exerting 328 horses, has a 31 mile electric only range, an estimated fuel economy of around 63 mpg and a total range of 435 miles. BMW states it is as fast as the recently departed M6.
No we can’t get enough of this car. M-Power.com just posted a video showing a BMW M test driver thoroughly thrashing a 1M in the name of tire smoke for an upcoming official video. The result is copious amounts of smoke billowing out of ginormous rear haunches. We love it.
Today’s ALMS “Friday Flashback” takes us back to Road America in 2006 for the GT2 duel between Jörg Bergmeister and Joey Hand. Bergmeister, driving a Porsche for Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing at the time, had to come back to best Hand’s BMW M3 from the BMW Team PTG stable after the 911 went off in the waning minutes. Included below is a comparison in-car from this year’s Road America race from the winning BMW Rahal Letterman Racing BMW M3 GT.
Last month we brought you Chris Harris’ video review of the 1M. Today we have the written companion piece from EVO.com. But we have to warn you. If you are tired of people heaping praise on the 1M stop right here. Because this above all reviews we’ve read is the most detailed, well articulated and (above all else) positive.
We’ve made no secret are admiration for Harris in the past. He’s an E28 M5 owner and a former owner of several M3s (including a E92). He knows the brand and (perhaps more importantly) knows that sometimes the most successful M cars aren’t always the latest.
So with that said, let’s take a look at a few excerpts starting with the way he begins the review:
There isn’t another car I want to be my everyday companion in 2011 as much as a new 1-series M Coupe. The car I drove wasn’t the finished item, the pricing has yet to be fixed and there are a few areas of criticism, but overall nothing that stops me badly wanting one of these things.
BimmerFile is dedicated to bringing you the most interesting news, links and reviews related to the BMW brand and it's vehicles.
We believe in the old school BMW ownership experience. We believe in garage nights with a six pack and some friends. We believe in 2002s, in E30 M3s and E34 540s with the 6 speed. We believe in progress in both design and engineering but we haven't lost sight of what made the brand and its products great all those years ago. And yes, we believe in the manual transmission.
We long for the days of the wave and for the days of roll-up windows. Yet we love the gadgets on the inside and the xenons on the outside.
In short, we can't get enough of BMWs. This is BimmerFile.
