Need For Speed Schubert Z4 GT3- 24h of Dubai

What do you get when you take a Z4 that BMW Motorsport has modified, powered with the famed motor used in the ///M3, a team of talented drivers and enter it a 24 hour race? A dominant victory of course.

We have been huge fans of the BMW Z4 GT3 since we first laid eyes on it- it is mean and lean while still being effective. BMWAG is not racing this car but offering it as a customer race car. The Swiss Schubert Motorsport team is sponsored by Need For Speed this year and with a big sponsor comes big name drivers, like Tommy Milner (formerly of ALMS BMW Rahal Letterman Racing), BMW WTCC factory driver Augusto Farfus and team regulars Claudia Hurtgen and Edward Sandstrom.

The No. 76 BMW Z4 GT3 drove to a four-lap win in what was a trouble-free race.

“The 24-hour race in Dubai is the first tough test of the year for all the teams, and we mastered this challenge in style,” Milner said. “This was my first race at this circuit. Winning this kind of marathon at the first attempt is something I will certainly never forget. We had absolutely no problems and the team spirit was great. This was exactly what you wish for from a 24-hour race.”

Schubert’s sister BMW Z4 ofBill Auberlen (ALMS BMW Rahal Letterman Racing), Boris Said, Matt Plumb and Paul Dalla Lana, came home fifth after an incident-filled weekend. They recovered from a qualifying accident that nearly destroyed the GT3-spec machine. The Turner Motorsports team ran this car during its 24h jount to better prepare the team of four for the Rolex 24 later this month.

“We achieved what we set out to this weekend. We wanted to get the four drivers together and prepare together for the big race in America. I think our drivers are now better attuned to each other. My thanks go to the Schubert team. They accommodated us very well, and we worked as a team.”

Looking forward to seeing this car compete in the US someday.

First of all let me say great job to Schubert Motorsports for their 1st and 5th places in the final. I am trying to clear my schedule to head to Daytona for the Rolex-24 race this month to see them competing there.

    • Jon- Not sure if Shubert will be at Daytona- let me look into that and get back to you. The Turner team was warming up for Daytona BUT they will be driving in an M3 this year. I am not sure the Z4 GT3 is legal in the Grand Am or Rolex series. It is pretty much a Euro spec car.

    and Porsche? No joy?

Have been checking that out too Michael, definitely let me know if you hear anything. I am a huge fan of BMW racing but for travel across the nation likely only to do it for the Z4 heh. Not sure if BMW will want the Z4 GT3 lining up against the M3 cars.

Porsche came in fourth and six place. Z4 first, followed by Ferrari, then Mercedes, 911 R, then the second Z4.

I wish they’d allow a version of this car to race in the ALMS GT challenge class with the 911’s.

Would be great. Still hoping against reason that we will see a E89 /M GT3 tribute car. If what Gabe and Michael it might make sense to see a possible ///M at the end of the M3 production. I think the E89 would make a great placeholder for the next generation M3. Would love to see is that monster soundtrack of the E92 in the best exterior design from BMW. imo

I have to admit I get no small bit of satisfaction to see this car coming in ahead of 911s. An M version with the v8 and the fixed hard-top would be an amazing piece of work, and it would seem not too hard for them to pull off.
