Paying with Your Key: BMW Creating NFC Key

Engineers at BMW are currently working on integrating NFC (near field communication) into the next generation keyfobs. This would allow you to pay, checkin to airlines, hotels and a plethora of other activities without doing anything but waiving your key.

This is especially interesting considering the rumors that say NFC is coming to mobile phones (specifically the iPhone 5) and other gadgets. But the lowly key actually has a few advantages over the mobile. Most importantly it ‘s a closed system and much harder to hack into.

NFC is available already on many credit cards and at many merchants who accept touchless payment. That means the moment BMW rolls this technology out, the infrastructure should mostly be ready.

How long does a keyfob stay charged? I’m assuming this announcement means that use as a credit card/ID/etc. does not require power. True?
