Munich/Los Angeles – June 30, 2011… Back in Hollywood. BMW is pleased to announce their participation in the upcoming Paramount Pictures release “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” as the film’s main automotive partner.
High performance with fewer emissions is the name of the game: One of the BMW vehicles provided for Tom Cruise´s next film is the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car. It has been recognized as having the most sophisticated technology and the most striking design among the current concept electric supercars. In a few years the BMW i8, which was inspired by the BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics concept vehicle, will enter series production.
“We are thrilled to be involved again in another Hollywood Blockbuster,” said Ian Robertson, BMW AG Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “The BMW Group leads the way in developing future mobility with a focus on sustainability. One great example is the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car which will be presented in the film. With its futuristic design and large glass surfaces, the car offers a fascinating perspective on the future of sheer driving pleasure – in combination with maximum efficiency. Also with BMW ConnectedDrive technology, it is the perfect car for Ethan Hunt to outsmart his pursuers through narrow streets and busy city traffic.”
Having provided vehicles for outstanding film projects, TV productions, etc. for more than 75 years, entertainment marketing is firmly established as an important building block for the BMW Group’s long-term image and product communications.
“Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”, directed by Brad Bird, is scheduled for release mid of December 2011.
An era has ended: On Wednesday Mario Theissen was officially bade farewell during an emotional event in Munich’s BMW Classic. On 1st July Jens Marquardt assumes sole responsibility for BMW’s motor racing projects.
More than 100 friends and associates from all phases of his career, including the reigning Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel, Nick Heidfeld, Alessandro Zanardi, Peter Sauber, Franz Tost, Norbert Haug, Stefano Domenicali and the current BMW works drivers, looked back together with Mario Theissen on the past years, obviously with a special focus set on his time as BMW Motorsport Director. During his 12-year tenure, Theissen celebrated innumerable victories and titles achieved in a variety of championships and series by BMW teams and drivers.
It’s not unsurprising given the 740i but Autblog has confirmed that BMW NA intends on offering a six cylinder 6 Series Coupe for the first time in the US since the E24. The six cylinder will of course be the venerable N55. However in the 640i as in the 740i, it will be the higher performance version 315-hp.
Another day, another car the North American Market won’t be seeing. But once again this is still pretty pertinent for all markets. For one we believe Alpina will have a greater presence in worldwide and yes that means the US. Could we see the B5 sedan eventually? Perhaps. However we’d wager an Alpina D3 would be more interesting for the US market.
Our friends at Kilometer Magazine have some evidence that the 6 Series Gran Coupe is moving closer to production. What will come as no surprise to anyone who follows BMW is that it looks pretty much identical to the concept shown last year.
Brought to you by the same team that created the 1M vs the Concrete Walls commercial we featured a few weeks back, this installment shows the (seemingly) 1M going in circles 100 of feet over a city. Is it real? Of course not. Does it look amazing. Absolutely.
Longest name ever? Check. An engine that likely won’t come to North America? Check. But before you start scrolling for the next story this is an interesting car in that it’s a sign of things to come for BMW. Look for more EffcientDynamic Editions to come.
Official Release: The BMW X1, the very first and still the only premium vehicle in its segment, continues to extend its pioneering position in the field of fuel efficiency. In the autumn of 2011, the model diversity across the range of the compact all-rounder will be complemented by the BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition. This model, which was systematically designed to provide driving pleasure simultaneously combined with reduced fuel consumption and emission levels, is powered by a 120 kW/163 hp four-cylinder diesel engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. With an average fuel consumption of 4.5 litres/100 km and a CO2 emission level of 119 grams per kilometre it achieves best marks for efficiency in a BMW X model. Furthermore, from the autumn of 2011, a newly developed four-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology will be available for the BMW X1. The 135 kW/184 hp power unit also sets new standards in the reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions within its performance class, with values ranging from 7.1 litres and 165 grams for the BMW X1 sDrive20i and 7.7 litres (automatic: 7.6 litres) and 179 grams (177 grams) for the BMW X1 xDrive20i.
Once upon a time there was a car, it was a fast car. This car went around, what is considered by many sports car aficionados the most demanding race track in the world, the fastest out of any car in its class (7:55). Is it a big deal? To some it is. No, I am not trying to rehash the lousy script from Pixar’s Cars 2 here. We are discussing the most recent car to lap the ‘Ring as the fastest sedan (unofficially mind you). That car is the all new BMW ///M5 super sedan.
Lapping the Nürburgring Nordschleife is no small feat at any decent speed as those that have tackled the course will tell you. At just shy of 13 miles and over 150 turns it is demanding to say the least (it truly is the “Green Hell”.) Only the top driver’s in racing who are familiar with the turns, changes in tarmac (concrete to asphalt), and overly harsh conditions have a chance at a “perfect” lap. That is in part why I have such a tough time digesting claims as the fastest car, or even that the lap times matter in the grand scheme of what a car represents, more specifically an ///M car. There is so much more to a lap on such a track than just the car. The driver, tires, weather and track conditions (if it hasn’t rained in a while, the track is greasy from all the build up) are just a few of the many extraneous variables that impact the overall outcome and time of a lap.

We believe in the old school BMW ownership experience. We believe in garage nights with a six pack and some friends. We believe in 2002s, in E30 M3s and E34 540s with the 6 speed. We believe in progress in both design and engineering but we haven't lost sight of what made the brand and its products great all those years ago. And yes, we believe in the manual transmission.
We long for the days of the wave and for the days of roll-up windows. Yet we love the gadgets on the inside and the xenons on the outside.
In short, we can't get enough of BMWs. This is BimmerFile.
