We caught up with Mr Watts while at Laguna Seca where M was showing off the new M5 for the first time on US soil. We wanted to check in on the latest from the M Division (ie the M5) as well as shed some more light on the background of the 1M. Specifically we were able to get some fascinating new details surrounding the 1M and how it almost didn ‘t come to market. Mr. Watts also was able to dispel some persistent rumors around the car. Specifically whether we ‘ll see a 2012 model year and whether or not a 1M CSL is coming.

It ‘s a must listen for any BMW M fan – especially 1M owners.

Great interview Gabe, and huge thank you with Mr Watts.   Glad to hear that somebody at BMW understands the huge resentment about the US Market constantly left out of the best of BMW ///M. Still have to say that I think a lot of this could be handled by a little pre-planning. Would love to ask Mr Watts however about how the ///Momsports stand for Motorsports, still waiting for ///M to give up on the M3 and take the ///Momsports racing instead. I am sure a 5k lbs SUV would do great during the 24 hours at the Ring…. HAH

If I see JonPD say the word //Momsports one more time I swear I’ll stop reading these comments. Great interview – love reading this behind the scenes stuff regarding the 1M. Thanks for making the car BMW – I love mine – and thanks guys for the interview.

He’s just an SUV hater who hasn’t yet realized that the monsters he calls “///Momsports” are just BMW’s way of beating down every US American SUV ever built, no matter the formulation.

Either that or a company that relizes that Datsun and Chrysler can build a faster sports car lol. The ///Momsports are just about crafting sports into a 5k lb hunk of metal. Then again have seen pictures of school bus drag racers so guess this performance enhance SUV is actually anything but a new idea. Sorry but sticking a supposed motorsports badge onto a pig still leaves it a pig. Guess my beef is that BMW is doing their best to turn a storied sub brand that built its reputation on the track into just a cheap advertising gimic to me.

The M cars you’ve criticized will go faster round the track than your MINI GP or whatever it is you’re driving at the moment. Curious that for all your criticism I don’t see you lining up to buy an E90 M3 or a 1M or any of the other modern day M cars you think somehow more worthy of the M badge than the X5 or X6. Probably just as well they’re not listening to you, or they’d be broke. Put your money where your mouth is dude, you’re so %#*$@# boring it’s not even funny.

Heh Dylan, to start my GP has spanked more than one ///M around a track, while true all of them out pull me on the straights but I have consistently been around more than a few on the track, As for putting money where my mouth is… I did, I had money down on a 1M and early spot. The 1M is a master stroke for BMW though I eventually though picked up a used GT3 for more money that really turned the cranks for me.
