Rumor: Next Generation BMW M3 Sedan a Go

Internet forum F30post brings us this latest (rumor that BMW may build another generation of M3 sedan despite rumors to the contrary. However what ‘s really interesting about the F80 (the internal code-name for the car) is that it may be the only M3 offered in name. As we ‘ve reported previously on BimmerFile, BMW is considering fully adopting a new naming system that sees the two doors go to even numbers (2, 4 and 6 Series) and the sedan based vehicles stay with their current named (1, 3, 5 and 7 Series). For M this could very well mean that the next generation M3 coupe (F82) and convertible could become the M4.

Originally the rumors pointed to the M3 Sedan being dropped in favor of a four door coupe like vehicle similar to the upcoming 6 Series Gran Sport or the Mercedes CLS. However this new rumor would indicate that all options are on the table for M.

One thing is for certain, BMW won ‘t throw away 30 years of brand equity by not producing something called an M3.

I really hope they make the sedan iteration of the next M whatever.

The M3 always was the compact sedan, nowadays when I think of the M3 I think of the E90, not the E92 or E93. Who knows how things will go from now till the cars official release, alot can change in that time. In the end if the engineering is spot on the name just won’t matter. As long as the M3 lives on… Its a badge, but its about the most recognized one in the automotive world.

Please BMW do yourself a favor and continue the M3 sedan. It’s my favorite sedan on the market!

I’d like to see a sedan M variant as well. And calling it M3 while the coupe is called M4 makes a lot of sense. But I think the M3 sedan should use the rumoured “4-door coupe” profile to set it apart even more from the rest of the 3-series sedans.
