After a very long break we’re back with our biggest and longest show ever. We start with the M5 and new 3 Series and Michael’s first-hand experiences with both cars. And as much as that could be a show in itself, we move on to tackle pretty much every other major BMW topic from the last three months. The show runs a little over an hour and weighs in at 45 mb but it’s one you won’t want to miss.

I’ve known about this comparo for a few weeks now and have had some time to let it gel in my brain a bit. I learned of these results at a recent event where one of Motor Trend’s regulars was in attendance (great guy). This nameless individual was discussing how both Pobst and Bell came away unhappy with the 1M on the track. He continued on that they BOTH said the brakes in the 1M were horrible and how they warped the rotors. They also BOTH said the car was understeering enormously and wouldn’t turn in. Me being me, I called this out as this differed significantly from my experiences, I tend to express my take on things and opinion quite often (for better or worse).

Official Release: Low-flying over hilly terrain at a speed of almost 800 kilometres per hour in the cockpit of a Eurofighter jet is a challenge to even the most hardened of military pilots. “When you’re flying at tree-top height at around 220 metres a second, only extremely accurate head-up display technology is able to provide the necessary ease of mind,” comments Wing Commander Robert Hierl, test pilot at the Technical and Airworthiness Centre for Aircraft.

Two very accomplished drivers, Randy Pobst and Justin Bell, did the track evaluations at Mazda
Raceway at Laguna Seca, so we are confident that their input and evaluations are backed by years of
experience. Instrumentation tests were performed as well, and some of the standard R&T fare like the
figure eight that tests skidpad, turn transition, braking and acceleration, all in a bit less than 30 seconds.

The BMW Group is investing half a billion euros in building the new BMW 3 Series at the Munich plant, where series production launches today. BMW has high expectations for the lighter, faster and more efficient 3 Series as it takes over for the highly acclaimed E90.
“The BMW 3 Series is the most important volume-produced model from the BMW Group as well as the biggest-selling model in the entire premium segment. To ensure that the sixth generation of the BMW 3 Series likewise leaves the factory in flawless quality, we have invested around 500 million euros in our Munich home plant. And that means safeguarding 9,000 workplaces,” said Frank-Peter Arndt, Member of the BMW AG Board of Management responsible for production, in Munich on Friday.

That’s all it took Car and Driver to take the F10 M5 from 0-60 mph. We expected under 4 but 3.7 is about a tenth or two beyond our hope. Not bad for a rear wheel drive über sedan. Your turn Mercedes. Oh wait… they already had their turn with the E63 and only managed 4.0 seconds.
You can read more in the latest edition of C&D and you can read our first drive of the car here.
