BMW Trademarks the M2, M7 and M10 Names

Let’s start off by saying that trademarking names of products that don’t exist and will never exist is a common practice to protect potential intellectual property and brand. Now let’s get to the speculation. The M7 has recently been rumored by BMWNA head Ludwig Willisch. While we can’t confirm that news (he only confirmed that BMW M would be producing a M Performance version of the 7 Series to us) the name M7 does conjure up quite the visual. And then there’s the M2 – something we know is likely to come as the true successor to the 1M. Finally the M10? Perhaps a little optimistic on our part but how does a follow-up to the M1 sound? The M10 would certainly fit the bill in name alone.

The M7 would def sell, we’ve seen proof in the Alpina B7.  Mercedes sells enough S63 and 65 to keep going for th esecond generation now, so there is a market for it.  Also the Panamera Turbo S is not having any problems in the sales department.

An M10, would be friggin fantastic.

Z8? Didn’t BMW trademark this when they made it back in the early 2000s? If not, that is odd.

Is it surprising that M4 is not on the list?

I have heard that the M3 moniker will stay even with the Coupe from sources and the fact M is using different “F” codes means they can name it whatever they want.

The M4 may also be pending or be held up due to some trademark issue…. time will tell as there is a lot of it still before the F82 comes to market.

M4 has previously been trademarked. BMW tend to designate a certain brand such as BMW M and BMWi with numbers up to 10 to protect potential future models and stop other manufacturers from using BMW nomenclature, some obscure lesser known manufacturers in China for example has a 520 and a 320.

One question being asked in Munich and Garching currently is the potential for the BMW 1er Compactive and City Compactive in terms of a Performance model. Naturally an M Performance seems a better fit for the hatch , but not the Crossovers. But they are weighing the options regarding performance as BMW has cracked it in the guise of importing a BMW dynamic character into a FWD concept. A Performance variant is a no brainer especially when it comes to the segment the City Compactive will be positioned. But a full M variant has not yet been ruled out.

The City Compactive which will be seen later for the first time this year in prototype form will be completely different in every way from its shared MINI twin. With BMW going for a shapely dynamic 3dr with a more conventional 5dr. Both the City compactive 3dr and 5dr aim to bring BMW driving pleasure , modern, appealing styling  and attention to detail to the masses.

The City Compactive is part of a product offensive to which BMW aim to increase profitability for the MINI operation. Both the next generation MINI and the FWD BMW’s will increase BMW’s profitability for this segment susbstantially more than the current MINI. BMW is currently in the midst of a product offensive. A product offensive which is all about increasing the groups profitability.
