The Z4 in race guise has been one of the most aggressive looking and sounding vehicles on the grid and it is finally coming to the US.
According SPEEDTV, BMW has confirmed that it will return to ALMS with the Z4 as its entry and the car will debut in the 61st annual Twelve Hours of Sebring in March. We had talked to Dr. Jens Marquardt about BMW fielding a new car earlier this fall and he had said there were some homologation decisions that were preventing the Z4 coming to the US but that they were still working with the sanctioning bodies. The final details have not been disclosed as to the exact specs of the car but it is officially going racing.
The official announcement came during BMW ‘s annual end-of-season awards banquet Saturday evening in Munich according to SpeedTV. “This change in model shows that we are focusing fully on the BMW Z4 as an all-encompassing GT car,” said BMW Motorsport director Jens Marquardt. “The BMW Z4 GT3 has been very successful on the GT3 scene in recent years, and has proven its ability to win races. I am confident this car will also play a major role as a GTE car in the ALMS.”
The Z4 has been racing throughout the world for the past several years but this spring will mark its maiden voyage across the Atlantic. Full details on BMW ‘s 2013 ALMS program are expected to be announced next month.
