We’ve reviewed the X1 several times at BF and come away surprisingly impressed. Taking all the best parts of the E8X/E9X platforms and adding the N20 and the fantastic ZF 8 speed auto, the X1 is a surprisingly enjoyable drive with loads of utility and efficiency. And if you get the AWD 2.0L four cylinder (N20) it’s one of the last BMW’s with an old school steering rack.

Can the new F48 front wheel drive based X1 live up to that? It’ll be lighter and perhaps a little smaller considering it’s based on the same platform as the next generation MINI Countryman. It’ll also come with electronically boosted steering which often leads to a lack of natural road feel. But what it will surely gain is better use of the space (front wheel drive can do that), better efficiency and more tech. Sound interesting or like a step back?
