It may surprise more than a few of you but the BMW M GmbH and BMW Motorsport have been completely separate divisions for years. Until now. With a surprise move BMW M GmbH and BMW Motorsport are merging effective April 1st.

What this means for both divisions isn’t entirely known but bringing BMW ultimate road cars closer to the race division can only be a good thing (see the Porsche GT Division).

BMW M

According to German media, the move is happening in conjunction a job change for longtime BMW Motorsport boss Jens Marquardt. Starting April 1st Mike Krack will take the lead of the motorsport department. Krack has held positions as BMW Head of Race and Test Engineering, Operations & Organization previously reporting to the BMW M CEO Markus Flasch.

The move is happening in conjunction with quite a lot of change in BMW Motorsports globally. The departure from DTM, Formula E and the dramatic reduction in IMSA participation would point to a change in focus for the brand.

The next step will be finalizing the BMW M4 GT3 race car for global racing series (potentially IMSA) and making decisions on a future LMDh car for LeMans.
