2013 BMW R 1200 GS

BMW Motorrad USA Sales up 31.6% for April

With spring finally arriving across the USA, April sales numbers for BMW’s motorcycle division are strong — up 31.6% for the month and up 12.8% year-to-date. Key areas of growth include sales of the S 1000 RR, which outright doubled its sales volume; and F 800 GT, which saw growth of 58% over April 2012.

More and more state and local police forces are utilizing the BMW R 1200 RT for patrol duty. A high tech and high performance upgrade from the iconic Harley Davidson Road King or Electra Glide police bikes, these BMW patrol bikes often have to carry their rider into harm’s way in the pursuit of suspects.

BMW-TVS

Video: BMW Parnters with India’s TVS to Build sub-500cc Motorcycles

Today BMW has announced a strategic partnership with TVS Motors that represents an intersection of the two major growth areas in motorcycling right now: Asian markets and small-displacement bikes. While BMW currently sells motorcycles all over the world, the smallest bikes in the current lineup are the single 650CC F 650 GS and the similarly-sized twin in the new C-series scooters. The former also representing BMW’s least expensive stateside offering.

BMW at MotoGP

BMW: The Official Car of MotoGP

For the 15th year running, BMW will be providing official safety vehicle support again this season for MotoGP. For those unfamiliar to the series, MotoGP is to motorcycle racing what F1 is for cars. It’s some of the most consistently thrilling road racing you can watch anywhere, and just like F1, most of the time it’s a challenge to find decent television coverage. With the 2013 season about to kick off in Qatar, BMW will once again be reprising its role as the “Official Car of MotoGP”.

BMW Concept X4

BMW Officially Unveils the Concept X4

Every BMW SAV has been a trailblazer. The world premiere of the first BMW SAV (the BMW X5) in 1999 saw the BMW Group create the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment – one in which BMW SAVs remain the market leaders. The BMW X3 and BMW X1 were likewise the first SAVs in their classes, and continue to define these types of vehicles today.

BMW "Boxer" Model

Renderings Surface of BMW’s upcoming “Boxer” Model

Late last year at EICMA in Milan, BMW Motorrad announced their intention to introduce a “Boxer” model to celebrate 90 years of making motorcycles. At the time this image was all they were giving the world in terms of what to expect, but it didn’t take a genius to predict that the “Boxer” would likely just be a more naked and more “cafe” version of BMW’s R 1200 R roadster. Personally, I would have loved to see a new, midsize 800cc air-cooled boxer twin, but I didn’t have very high hopes for that. Engine dreams aside, today the internet is abuzz with concept renderings of the “Boxer” model.

Husqvarna Dakar 2013 Stage Three

BMW Motorrad and Speedbrain Part Ways

BMW has announced an end to their racing cooperation with Speedbrain, their partner organization in running Husqvarna motorcycles in events like the Dakar. Given BMW’s recent sale of the Husqvarna marque to Pierer Industrie AG, there’s not much left to partner on unless BMW were to start running the R 1200 GS in that epic race. Frankly, I think I’d like to see that. But big bikes in the sand notwithstanding, the two groups have parted ways amicably as BMW continues to refocus its Motorrad division to what’s next.

BMW: Feed Your Restless

BMW Motorrad Launching New “Feed Your Restless” TV Campaign

For those of us who love to ride motorcycles but also unfortunately live in the midwest or the east coast of the USA, winter is a time of restless impatience. The walls of our offices seem smaller than ever. The wind feels colder. The sky is even more gray. We obsessively watch the 10-day weather projections desperate for more temperate conditions on the horizon. There’s an itch on our backsides that only a motorcycle in motion can scratch.
