Once again one of our favorite public sources Scott27 has given usan overviewofan upcoming BMW product. Today he goes into relative detail around the completely redesigned 2012 3 Series. Here’s an excerpt from his post at GCZ:
“The proportions of a typical 3er, evident since the E36 through to the E46 and currently the E90 will remain meaning squat proportions, short rear overhang and wheels placed to each corner. The overall look is more slimmer and more toned than the E90. continued →
In the US BMW will continue to only offer the 1 Series as a 128i and 135i.
Official Release: Entering the 2010 model year, the BMW 1 Series as the guarantee for the broad-scale impact of BMW EfficientDynamics and as the epitome of Sheer Driving Pleasure in the compact segment is gaining even greater significance. Two additional, extra-economical low-emission engine variants are enhancing the model range of the BMW 1 Series Coupé as of September 2009: In the guise of the BMW 120i Coupé and the BMW 118d Coupé there will then be two further models with the EU5 emission rating.
Following the successful launch of the new entry-level three-door and five-door models, the BMW 116i and the BMW 116d, in spring 2009, the BMW 1 Series is once again proving its value as the pacemaker for efficient mobility combined with outstanding driving pleasure in the compact class. Other new models as of September 2009 are the Lifestyle and Sport Editions of the BMW 1 Series three- and five-door. continued →
Few of us will ever come close to the 135 bimmers Klaus has owned, but it would be a nice feat to even achieve a third of them. This retired entrepreneur’s 135th BMW is none other than an ///M6. Not sure if that would be my choice but he more than likely has owned the rest of the fleet. (Edit)
Official Release: Following its successful introduction into the market, the new BMW 7 Series is further expanding its position in 2010 as the most innovative model series in the luxury segment. New drivetrain and equipment variants emphasise both the driving pleasure and the outstanding efficiency of BMW’s top-class luxury saloon.
The BMW 740d to be introduced in autumn, for example, will for the first time feature a new straight-six diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp. The second diesel model in the range, the BMW 730d, underlines its status as the world’s most economical and lowest emission model in the luxury class by a further reduction in both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as well as optionally available BMW BluePerformance Technology. Hence, BMW now offers yet another production model already fulfilling the EU6 emission standard today. continued →
Official Release: Anybody who was not invited read it in the papers: On the morning of 9 July 1929 full-page ads informed the public that BMW had become a car maker. And guests invited to BMW’s new showroom in the middle of Berlin were able to admire a small car bearing the model designation 3/15 PS DA 2, with the two last letters standing for “Deutsche Ausführung” or “German Version”. In popular language the car nevertheless soon took on a new name, BMW’s first production model remaining a legend to this day as the “Dixi”.
The first of these attractive small performers coming off the production line on 22 March in BMW’s plant near the former Berlin-Johannisthal Airport set the foundation not only for the production of cars by BMW. For although the Dixi was largely taken over from an existing model with parts and components already in use, the car clearly bore the handwriting typical of BMW to this very day: From the beginning efficiency and dynamics were of utmost significance to BMW, forming an integral part of the brand’s DNA. Indeed, BMW had already made a great name for itself as a manufacturer of very economical high-performance products such as aircraft engines and motorcycles, before entering car production. continued →
More info from inside Munich this morning. Apparently the German magazine Auto Zeitung has created a rendering that is fairly spot on (we’re guessing except for the lower front clip which we can’t imagine would be a derivative of the next 5 Series). Here’s an excerpt from Scott27’s post at GCZ:
As you can see here the strong line that begins from the rear headlamps and widens as it gets past the front doors on the actual car the line goes to the front and cuts of the headlights like a lid the design trait is classic BMW , evident on the 2002 it is a modern interpretation of the classic bathtub or boat look line.
The scupture at the base of the side flanks is a variation on todays boat like design line – although less rounded on the next generation of 1er this interpretation takes the lead from the X1 and begins from the roof , flowing around the rear hoffmeister quarter light , allowing the rear wheel arch and sharply cut into the flanks ending at the front of the front wheel arch.
When BMW’s next development of LED technology comes on stream the headlamps will be replaced by strips that by daylight are dark but when fully illuminated they take appearance of the double halo lights. With this option RR Phantom esque driving lights sit below the LED’s. continued →
Tucked away below is information on BMW’s updated 3.0L Twin Turbo Diesel and 8 Speed transmission. The updated engine now matches the petrol’s HP output of 306 hp with peak torque of 600 Newton-metres/442 lb-ft at just 1,500 rpm – 17 more than before.
Official Release: Lower emissions, more driving pleasure: No other car maker besides the BMW Group applies this principle so convincingly and successfully in practice. Both today and in a long-term comparison, BMW and MINI are far ahead of all competitors in the premium segment in reducing both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
This unique position held by the BMW Group is the result of the EfficientDynamics development strategy comprising all innovations serving to reduce fuel consumption and emissions versus the former model and, at the same time, enhance road performance to an even higher standard.
This is made possible by the fundamental, all-round philosophy of BMW EfficientDynamics. Optimisation of vehicle efficiency is indeed the guideline applied by the BMW Group in all areas of vehicle development, bearing testimony to the unique competence of the BMW Group in terms of powertrain, transmission and suspension technology, promoting the intelligent flow of energy within the vehicle as well as the intelligent choice of materials for superior lightweight construction, and ensuring the permanent optimisation of aerodynamics. continued →
Scott27, one of our favorite completely public sources for BMW rumors has provided some clarity around some of the projects BMW AG have put on the shelf over the last year.

6-series shooting brake : CANCELLED.
What’s a GT2 and X4 you ask? Here’s an except from his post that clears most of that up:
Yes we know about the demise of the beautiful CS Concept something I had hoped would have made it to production. Although the V12 was to power the range topper the M Division had plans for a ballistic high performance version of the V12 in which the car which would have been designated BMW 7er Gran Turismo, would have been a serious preformance flagship for BMW.
The M1 Hommage was purely intended for a design exercise only but BMW began to investigate if people would get their cheque books out for a limited production version powered by either the V8 from the M3 or the incoming V8 Turbo found with the X5/X6 M models. When you seperate demand from the dreamers there was no specific case for a strategy. continued →
For those of you out there that want more of the E30 M3, this is some of the best footage of that car driven to its limited we’ve ever seen. The driver is Patrick Snijers and it’s at the Manx Rally in 1988.
Jeremy Clarkson once mentioned something about BMW’s first generation iDrive system and it’s internal navigation only seemed to go the direction of Poland. Yes the man ripe with analogies that only seem to serve his purposes equal parts humor and horror. Yet there are still times when he manages to be a true motoring journalists. Case in point, his latest review of the BMW Z4 35i:
“To a racing driver, who is used to slick tyres and fish-sharp reflexes, it’s wallowy and slithery and horrid. But to me it’s brilliant. Mostly because you can drive for more than 10 minutes without your head coming off.
I also liked the styling, the ride — provided you stay out of the sport settings — the engine’s urgency, the fluidity of the responses and the elegance of the interior… continued →
BimmerFile is dedicated to bringing you the most interesting news, links and reviews related to the BMW brand and it's vehicles.
We believe in the old school BMW ownership experience. We believe in garage nights with a six pack and some friends. We believe in 2002s, in E30 M3s and E34 540s with the 6 speed. We believe in progress in both design and engineering but we haven't lost sight of what made the brand and its products great all those years ago. And yes, we believe in the manual transmission.
We long for the days of the wave and for the days of roll-up windows. Yet we love the gadgets on the inside and the xenons on the outside.
In short, we can't get enough of BMWs. This is BimmerFile.
