We’ve just returned from the Frankfurt IAA and to say that the BMW Hall is overwhelming is an absolute understatement. The scale of BMW’s home auto show venue is immense. Imagine an auto show floor stateside and then think that the size of that entire building is around the size of BMW’s own in Frankfurt- it is that enormous. BMW didn’t disappoint its fans in its presentation of its newest offerings and future concepts; offering a wide range of vehicles, all presented in the ideals of Efficient Dynamics. Our cameras were able to capture it all so be sure to check out the gallery.

World premieres of the BMW i3 Concept and BMW i8 Concept, new F20 BMW 1 Series (including new Efficient Dynamics Edition), new F10 ///M5, 520d Efficient Dynamics Edition, 1 Series with M Sport Kit (March 2012 launch), an electric scooter, Husqvarna motorcycle and several other models. Namely the BMW Performance 1 Series Design Studie, X1 Efficient Dynamics Edition and 3 Series Edition models that we not featured during the actual Media Conference.

We were puzzled by BMW’s decision to feature the 6 Series coupe’ and convertible so extensively during the media conference as these two models (although with new 40d power) were not discussed in the press releases leading up to the event. Secondly, the 6ers have been extensively covered by the media with other power plants. If anything, we were expecting a new model such as the 6 Series GranCoupe to be the surprise guest but rumors circulating the show were that BMW decided at the 11th hour the 6 Gran Coupe didn’t fit the theme of efficiency they were going for. Reportedly, it will be shown in Geneva closer to market launch. In case you were wondering; yes, even the ///M5 was discussed in terms of improved efficiency if you can imagine that.

There was another object on our scavenger hunt list that we searched high and low for in the vast BMW hall; the X6 ///M wearing M Performance stripes- it was nowhere to be found. Maybe that was for the better as our lenses were needed to capture the rest of the show.

Munich/Los Angeles – June 30, 2011… Back in Hollywood. BMW is pleased to announce their participation in the upcoming Paramount Pictures release “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” as the film’s main automotive partner.

High performance with fewer emissions is the name of the game: One of the BMW vehicles provided for Tom Cruise´s next film is the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car. It has been recognized as having the most sophisticated technology and the most striking design among the current concept electric supercars. In a few years the BMW i8, which was inspired by the BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics concept vehicle, will enter series production.

“We are thrilled to be involved again in another Hollywood Blockbuster,” said Ian Robertson, BMW AG Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “The BMW Group leads the way in developing future mobility with a focus on sustainability. One great example is the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car which will be presented in the film. Having provided vehicles for outstanding film projects, TV productions, etc. for more than 75 years, entertainment marketing is firmly established as an important building block for the BMW Group’s long-term image and product communications.

“Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”, directed by Brad Bird, is scheduled for release mid of December 2011.

Official Release: The BMW 328 is considered the most successful and best-looking sports car of the 1930s. The BMW 328’s success was the result of its design parameters – through the use of systematic lightweight construction, aerodynamic lines, opti- mum engine types and outstanding suspension technology, it laid the foundation stone for a new vehicle concept, by which performance only leads to success if combined with perfect harmonisation of all parameters and maximum efficiency. With these characteristics, the BMW 328 was even then the embodiment of what the BMW brand still stands for today – dynamics, aesthetics and a high level of innovation.

This year, the dream sports car is celebrating its 75th birthday. The festivities will begin near Lake Como at the Mille Miglia. There, the main focus will be on the fascination of the BMW 328 racing car. To this day, the award-winning vehicle BMW 328 Touring Coupé still holds the record for the highest average speed on the Mille Miglia circuit and, in 2010, was again able to win the historic revival of the race. A week later at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the two-seater’s functional aesthetics will be the focus of attention. In this area of conflict be- tween tradition and modernity, the BMW Group is paying tribute to the BMW 328 on the occasion of its anniversary with a special model – the BMW 328 Hommage. “With the BMW 328 Hommage, we wish to pay homage to the passion and inventiveness of the fathers of the BMW 328”, explains Karl Bäumer, CEO of BMW Group Classic. “They created an icon, which is consid- ered a milestone in the history of the automobile.” The BMW 328 Hommage translates the principles and the character of the vehicle of that time into present times and offers a possible interpretation of how the designers of that time, Fritz Fiedler and Rudolf Schleicher, might have built the BMW 328 in the present day using current technology.

The BMW 328 – lightweight construction as a principle. The BMW 328 was also a special BMW insofar as the lightweight construction principle was systematically implemented on a BMW automobile for the very first time. Wherever possible, the lightest and at the same time most robust materials were used, thereby keeping the gross vehicle weight down to just 780 kilograms. In order to translate the idea of lightweight construction into this day and age, major parts of the exterior and interior of the BMW 328 Hommage are made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). Whilst in the old days they favoured the materials aluminium and magnesium, CFRP is now considered to offer the best ratio between weight and stability. The high-strength fibre fabric is lighter than aluminium, but also more stable. Wherever the material has been used on the BMW 328 Hommage, it is also visible. In this way, the BMW 328 Hommage not only reflects the lightweight construction principle functionally, but also visually. The BMW Group leads the way in the production and use of CFRP in automotive construction and already possesses many years of experience in the series production of CFRP roofs and structural components for the BMW M6 as well as CFRP roofs for the BMW M3.

Not only do the exterior and interior CFRP elements of the BMW 328 make an exceptional statement. The up-to-date implementation of the original vehicle character is also expressed in the choice of other materials used on the inside and outside of the vehicle. Fine leather, matt and high-gloss black polished alu- minium as well as the CFRP interior visualise in the BMW 328 Hommage the pure and functional roadster character of the sports car of that day. Inside the vehicle there are also numerous details derived from motor racing, offering a hint of the BMW 328’s most successful motor sports career. For instance, the pre- miere of the vehicle in 1936 did not take place at a motor show, but on the race- track. In its first race, the BMW 328 declassified the entire higher-powered com- petition and dominated the racetracks of Europe during the years that followed.

Dynamics and lightness in the interior.

The expressive exterior design of the BMW 328 Hommage depicts the modern interpretation of a highly emotional and dynamic two-seater Roadster – just like the BMW 328 75 years ago. “Hommage cars have a long tradition in the BMW Group. Based on our design philosophy “Rooted in history, moving for- ward in design”, they demonstrate the significance of history for the present. Even 75 years ago, the BMW 328 stood for sportiness and agility through light- weight construction. The BMW 328 Hommage Car pays tribute to this past and shows how BMW lightweight construction will develop. Carbon is the material of the future.” (Adrian van Hooydonk) In keeping with its role model, the BMW 328 Hommage has a streamlined design and is clearly recognisable as a sports car. Precise lines run across all of the car body’s taut surfaces. As a result, a subtle contrast between the tense surfaces and the sharp edges is created within the flat, dynamic silhouette. The strong wedge shape accelerates the ve- hicle even when it is at a standstill, the scoops behind the seats take up the lines coming from the bonnet, guiding them dynamically into the rear end. The struc- ture of the CFRP mats gives the vehicle an appearance of depth, the diagonal lines of the woven CFRP additionally underscoring the dynamic design vocabu- lary of the roadster. Thanks to concise weaving, the carbon structure is clearly visible, optically emphasising the lightweight construction principle. Like the first BMW 328 test vehicles, with which the model celebrated its triumphant debut on the racetrack in 1938, then going on to gain a number of further successes, the BMW 328 Hommage has no doors. Then as now, deep recesses allow ac- cess to the inside of the car. The extremely wide and flat front end is strongly three-dimensional, generous surfaces and concise lines give the front end a powerful appearance. Viewed from the front, the CFRP bonnet appears to en- compass the vehicle from above. It embraces the vehicle, framing the slightly set back front end in a very distinctive downward sweep. Due to the almost vertical, low-reaching sidewalls, it simultaneously emphasises the BMW 328 Hommage’s excellent stability on the road. As a result, the vehicle appears to be even flatter and more dynamic as a whole. Under the bonnet, further surfaces rise to embed

the top and bottom of the distinctive kidney grille, whilst folding themselves around it to shape the adjacent air intakes. Openings and large air intakes create visual lightness at the front, simultaneously demonstrating the high air require- ment of the powerful three-litre, six-cylinder engine. Three-dimensionally de- signed lattices inside the front vents form a connection between the headlamps and the kidney grille, with the three-dimensional lattice structure acting as an accentuating feature.

Characteristic kidney shape.

The vertically positioned double kidney grille imitates the slim, vertical kidney design of the early BMW models. In those days, the BMW 328 was one of the first BMWs to feature it, after which it became further established with later BMW models. On the BMW 328 Hommage, the vertically mounted kidney grille is dynamically incorporated into the flat silhouette. It slants back roughly in the middle, thus blending in with the bonnet and the dynamic silhouette when viewed from the side. On the other hand, from the front it appears to be standing upright. The kidney grille bars are more prominently curved than the kidney grille surround itself. The vehicle displays the extremely round and appealing design of the original BMW 328 kidney grille when viewed from the side. The kidney grille surround is also distinctively three-dimensional, appearing to continue in- side the vehicle. Its front surface is finished in polished high-gloss, whilst the side surfaces have a matt finish. This detail gives the kidney grille a very high- class and up-to-date appearance. Behind the kidney grille bars, black horizontal fins obstruct the view into the engine compartment – just like on the 328 of 75 years ago.

Athletic rear end.

The rear end takes on the design vocabulary featured on the front of the vehicle. Similar to the front end, sections of the sidewall form the framework for the de- sign elements that appear to protrude from the rear end. Between them, located far to the outside, are two clearly and concisely designed taillights sporting the characteristic BMW L shape. Two filigree luminous elements reflect a strongly curved interpretation of the typical BMW L shape, whilst a concisely constructed bar fitted to the outside of the lamp is directed vertically downward, separating the lamps towards the outside. The modern functional design of the taillights underlines the technical appeal of the vehicle.

The powerful sculpturing of the rear end also visually conveys the BMW 328 Hommage’s lightness. Large vents and openings characterise the rear end, giv- ing it a light appearance. The distinctively horizontal section below the taillights forms a counterpoint to the intense sculpturing, emphasising the width of the vehicle. Below that, the rear of the car is strongly arched, a concise line partitions the surface, thereby providing an air of lightness. This large sculptural element adopts the form language of the front-end design surrounding the kidney grille. The wing-shaped element tapers both upward and downward, thus revealing two large latticed air outlets. The circular tailpipes are located inside these two openings. They protrude prominently out of the lattice and, combined with the distinctively designed wing shape of the lower air intake edges, underscore the power of the straight six-cylinder engine.

Details derived from motor racing.

The interior design of the BMW 328 Hommage comprises a number of details that are reminiscent of the successful motor racing history of the BMW 328. For example, the slightly asymmetrically designed windscreen has a recess in the middle, similar to the windscreen design of earlier racing cars. Simultaneously, it marks the areas in which the driver and co-driver sit. Moreover, four wide leather straps run across the bonnet, which appear to dive under the side shoulder sur- faces to be continued on the side. This detail, which used to be considered an extremely sporty attribute, is also featured on the BMW 328 Hommage. Com- bined with the high-gloss aluminium safety buckles, the leather straps provide a touch of class in contrast to the very technical-looking carbon fibre. The modern quick-release fasteners for securing the bonnet bring racing of the past into the

present. On the driver’s scoop a large silver “75” as well as a small logo below it signify the reason for the BMW 328 Hommage. Next to it, the integrated tank filler neck protruding from the right-hand side is a striking detail. Whilst it pro- trudes prominently from the body of the BMW 328, the BMW 328 Hommage features a version that is integrated slightly more into the bodywork. The large, prominently designed individual round headlights of the BMW 328 Hommage are reminiscent of the headlamps featured on the BMW 328, which were integrated into the wings for the first time. The three- dimensional interpretation of these round headlights is divided into four trans- parent, cylindrical elements, these being back-lit by LEDs. Between them, set- back black concave surfaces symbolise the typical tape cross used on headlights in motor racing. Around the four reflectors an illuminated ring emphasises the circular design of each individual headlamp.

The two-part light alloy wheels featured on the BMW 328 Hommage are a very special interpretation of the characteristic hole pattern of the original rims. The extremely concave high-gloss black aluminium rim boasts a contrasting silver- grey cover made of glass fibre. The insides of the angular milled holes have a high-gloss finish and are distinctively accentuated by a matt overlay. A black chrome butterfly nut bearing the BMW emblem completes the contemporary version of the wheel.

Clear and functional – the interior.

The interior of the BMW 328 Hommage visualises the functional passion the BMW 328 exuded already back then. Thus the design of the interior is also pure and functional today. The entire interior structure is made of CFRP, conveying the lightweight construction concept of the BMW 328 into the inside of the car both visually and functionally. Due to the special application of materials, open- ings and freely suspended elements, the surfaces and different levels create an all-embracing feeling of lightness.

Through the use of CFRP inside the BMW 328, the “layering” design principle, with which shapes take on clear functions, adopts a completely new form of ex- pression. Due to its exceptional characteristics, CFRP is in itself robust and can be shaped into self-supporting structures. Hence, only two large surface areas – so-called layers – define the interior of the BMW 328 Hommage. Both of them start at the bonnet and protrude into the interior. One of the layers extends to- wards the driver, reveals the entire driver’s workplace comprising steering wheel, control elements and scoop, thereby separating the driver and co-driver areas from each other. This spatial separation is indicated by a further material: the elegant, brown leather interior extends from the entrance across the driver’s area, over the seats to the scoop, thus becoming an integral part of the design vocabulary of the first layer. At the same time, the surrounding graphics compris- ing material and geometry create a link with the co-driver. On the driver’s scoop, a silver-coloured logo bearing the number 75 also gives indication inside the car of the festive occasion in honour of the BMW 328 Hommage.

The second layer begins next to the scoop, making a sweep towards the co- driver, then to float freely in front of him. This gesture creates a sporty but light sense of spaciousness, opening out a functional area in front of the co-driver. Between the driver and co-driver a multitude of recesses in the instrument panel and centre console create an airy and harmonious spatial experience, bringing the driver and the co-driver slightly closer to each other again in a sweeping ges- ture. The lines of the woven carbon fibres complement the interior design vo- cabulary perfectly.

Viewed from above, a slightly asymmetrical design of the bonnet and windscreen underscores the driver-orientated construction of the BMW 328 Hommage. The windscreen is larger within the driver’s area, so the lines of the powerdome are of different length. Behind the windscreen they continue in the inside of the car, so that at this point both the interior and the exterior appear to be intertwined.

Authentic materials.

Apart from CFRP, leather and aluminium, the interior deliberately features very few other materials. But every material that has been used is also visible. This provides the BMW 328 with a special authenticity. The contrast between the cool and technical-looking carbon fibre and the high-quality, warm brown of the leather characterises the interior. The exceptionally soft saddle tan leather has a fine grain and a slightly antique finish. On the seats the high-quality seam pattern enhances the appearance of the leather-covered seats even further. The seams in the centre of the sitting area of the seats and the silver-grey double-felled outer seams are a modern interpretation of the sports seats featured in earlier models, giving the seats additional character and depth. Aluminium is only sel- dom featured and, depending on where it is used, has a high-gloss or a matt satin finish.

Instruments and tripmaster.

The instruments featured in the BMW 328 Hommage are both sporty and func- tional to an equal extent. The sparse instrument panel is dominated by the only round instrument – the prominently designed rev counter. Like the cockpit of the BMW 328 and typical of a sports car, the instrument cluster indicates in addition to engine speed only the oil temperature, oil pressure and water temperature. To the right of the rev counter, control lamps and a gearshift point indicator com- plete the instrument cluster. The instrument surrounds are finished in black chrome and made to the highest standards.

The puristic instrument cluster is complemented by the so-called tripmaster. The instrument panel of the BMW 328 Hommage is a fitted with two iPhones located in special holders and which assume additional display functions for the driver and co-driver. They are integrated into the self-supporting structure of the co-driver layer and, like the instrument cluster, are accommodated in a high- grade aluminium housing. The shape of the housing itself imitates the design of classic stopwatches, the two functions of the tripmaster being accessible

through two further openings. Firstly, the iPhones function as stopwatches for measuring lap times and secondly as GPS roadbooks. Using two iPhones the driver and front-seat passenger/co-driver respectively can use both functions at the same time. After a journey, the iPhones can also be taken away in their hold- ers. Apart from the instruments and the tripmaster, the BMW 328 Hommage is also fitted with further features taken from motor racing. In addition to being equipped with just the bare essentials in order to save weight, the BMW 328 Hommage is also fitted with modern 4-point seat belts, ergonomic seats and the “bone”, a kind of emergency switch-off for the vehicle electronics, which is located between the two seats. The brushed aluminium belt retainers located next to the headrests ensure optimal guidance of the belts. These high- class, functional details are concealed behind the headrests, blending in harmo- niously with the overall concept..

Deep within today’s release of an official BMW press release are these gorgeous carbon items. What are they? We know that one of the easiest ways to drop weight on a modern car is with simpler carbon based seats. So do they relate to the upcoming BMW M3 lightweight? Or are they perhaps meant for aftersales? And what about the carbon hood that’s also mentioned? All good questions we hope to answer soon. Intelligent lightweight construction as a development principle for Efficient Dynamics: New perspectives on weight improvement.

Thanks to Efficient Dynamics the BMW Group is succeeding in continuously reducing the consumption and emission values of current and future models and simultaneously increasing the pleasure of driving characterised by dynamics and agility. Furthermore, additional requirements, such as active and passive safety and driving comfort, are taken into account. For the solution of the conflict of interests between the many demands made on premium segment vehicles and the pursuit of maximum efficiency not only efficiency optimisation of the drive system, but above all weight optimisation plays a vital role. The concept of intelligent lightweight construction creates ideal conditions for the realisation of the unmistakable character of a BMW or a MINI model at as low a vehicle weight as possible.

The principle of intelligent lightweight construction applies and is consistently pursued in all sectors of automobile development – from body and engine construction to chassis technology and interior design. The BMW Group has established a process step, which during the predevelopment phase already generates ideas for alternative materials or constructional designs leading to an optimisation of vehicle weight. Innovative production processes expand the range of viable solutions. Apart from alloys and plastics, renewable raw materials and foams, also increasing use of composites and hybrid materials is made.

The demands imposed on every lightweight construction solution are sophisticated. Each new material must at least equal the previously used material in functionality and reliability and at the same time be significantly lighter. Furthermore, the production costs including energy and raw materials and their recyclability are taken into account in the total evaluation. Thus the utilisation of innovative composites became possible only after the development of modern recycling processes. These ensure that it is also possible to completely recycle material combinations after their normal utilisation.

More safety, unique agility, optimised weight: innovative material mix in body construction.

The new BMW 5 Series is an impressive example for the progress achievable through intelligent lightweight construction in the optimisation of body weight. During the development of the saloon and touring models far stricter safety specifications had to be met than had applied for the previous models. At the same time the agility and comfort characteristics typical for the BMW 5 Series were to be developed further.

Compared to the previous model the average stability of the new 5 Series Saloon’s body structure has been increased by 55 percent. Furthermore, the new model shows the typical BMW weight distribution of practically 50:50 between front and rear axles. The high stability of the body and the wellbalanced axle load distribution are complemented by optimised total weight and thus further improve both efficiency and agile handling of the new BMW 5 Series.

The solution to the conflict of interests between crash safety and comfort on the one hand and weight optimisation, agility and efficiency on the other was achieved through a precisely defined material mix. The new BMW 5 Series has doors, front side walls and a bonnet made of aluminium. Solely through the use of aluminium doors a weight reduction per vehicle of 23 kilograms compared to a conventional steel construction was achieved. Furthermore, a far higher proportion of hot-formed steel grades compared to the previous model was used. These high-strength steel grades, which involve more elaborate processing, provide – at a lower weight – higher strength and stability using less material. Progress in production technology makes it possible to increase the proportion of high strength steel grades with each model generation. Thus the steadily increasing demands regarding crash safety can be met without an increase in weight.

Optimised material utilisation in the carbon production.

BMW already plays a leading role in the utilisation of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) in the automotive industry, which will be considerably increased when series production of the BMW i3 and BMW i8 models announced for 2013 commences. Both models have a passenger cell produced from CFRP, which combines extreme stability with a far lower weight compared to steel, but also to aluminium. This represents the first introduction of this material, known up till now from Formula One racing and the aviation industry, to large-scale series production of cars.

In the medium and long term, not only the models produced under a subbrand of BMW will profit from this innovative construction. During production development for the passenger cells of the BMW i3 and BMW i8 models an innovative process for further processing of the cuttings from the carbon fibre mats and textiles was conceived. In future these can be used 100 percent for the production of body components. In this way it will be possible to equip other models with extremely light and high-grade carbon fibre components. Increasing the carbon fibre proportion throughout all segments will thus be possible at considerably lower costs than hitherto.

The cuttings are subjected to a newly developed process, during which the carbon fibre cuttings of varying length are woven into CFRP mats of the required size and then, in exactly the manner as the original material, dipped in artificial resin and cured. The strength of the material produced in this way is several times higher than that of carbon fibre reinforced plastic. It equals the strength of a conventional steel component – at a weight reduced to less than a quarter.

In the course of predevelopment utilisation of processed CFRP for example was tested in the prototype of a bonnet for a BMW M model. The lid consists of two carbon layers enclosing either a Nomex plastic or a recycled-paper honeycomb. Also the prototype of a seat shell was produced from the material created through the new technology. The BMW M GmbH has already gathered extensive experience in the utilisation of CFRP in series development. For example, the current BMW M3 Coupé has a carbon fibre roof.

Less weight, lower noise emissions: focus of innovation is on acoustic lightweight construction in the drive area.

With continuously increasing aluminium content and the use of even lighter magnesium for engine construction the BMW Group has significantly reduced the average weight of drive units during recent times. In addition to this, the engine development specialists are working on innovative components, by means of which the noise emissions of petrol and diesel engines can be further reduced. One example here is the acoustic encapsulation for the particulate filter of diesel engines. This provides a clearly noticeable reduction in the noise levels both inside and outside of the vehicle. Thanks to the efficient encapsulation of the particulate filter, part of the sound insulation of the underbody cowling, the bulkhead and the front axle can be dispensed with, so that the total vehicle weight is reduced. Furthermore, the new casing has not only an acoustic, but also a heat insulating function. After a cold start an encapsulated particulate filter reaches its optimal operating temperature faster. The new construction design thus improves the durability of the exhaust gas treatment system.

A further acoustic lightweight construction measure is applied at the engine front. A sound insulating of the belt drive, the so-called engine front bulkhead, absorbs the drive noises coming from the crankcase and the cylinder head, which are of high frequency and therefore unpleasant to the ear. The foam material used for the engine front bulkhead has very low weight but excellent sound absorbance properties.

The encapsulation of the oil sump provides sound insulation immediately at source. Oil sumps made of metal prove to be particularly effective resonance bodies for the vibrations from the crankcase and crankshaft. This undesired effect is compensated for by insulation composed of fibre material combined with a layer of moulded foam. Due to the deliberately selected material combination the noise emissions occurring are not only attenuated but also absorbed.

Chassis components: reduced weight, improved driving pleasure and efficiency.

The lightweight construction methods in the chassis sector are numerous and they have a direct positive influence on driving pleasure. Every reduction of unsprung, and in particular, of rotating masses has a direct effect on the agility of the vehicle. That is why the BMW Group places particular value in weight optimisation of the suspension and brake systems. With the introduction of the chassis made almost completely of aluminium in 1996, BMW set standards for agility and driving pleasure in all segments. Furthermore, the weight optimisation of chassis technology provides ideal preconditions for greatly improved comfort, for shorter braking distances and for a reduced load acting on the vehicle body.

Among those lightweight construction measures performed on the current BMW series models are the weight-optimised drive shafts with spur gearing (weight reduction 0.8 kilograms per vehicle on models with BMW xDrive), a steering column case made of magnesium (up to 2.0 kilograms) as well as a foot pedal mounting made of plastic and a plastic clutch pedal (up to 1.5 kilograms). With a stabiliser retaining bracket and an articulated column made from fibre reinforced plastic the vehicle weight in each case is reduced by 0.4 kilograms. A gearbox cross member made from fibre reinforced thermoplastic is 1.0 kilograms lighter than the aluminium component previously used.

As part of a predevelopment programme spanning all chassis variants the BMW Group development engineers are also working on weight-optimising innovations, through which a further reduction of mass to the extent of over 20 kilograms can be achieved. Thus for example suspension spring systems made from glass fibre reinforced plastic, which make each vehicle up to six kilograms lighter, as well as extremely weight reduced high-performance braking units are in the predevelopment phase. The construction, consisting of an aluminium fixed calliper and a lightweight brake disc, reduces the vehicle weight by about 8.0 kilograms compared to the brake units already in use in the series production vehicles, which are fitted with an aluminium chamber and an aluminium floating calliper.

This morning BMW took the virtual wraps off of the Vision ConnectedDrive concept car. The two-seat roadster concept gives BMW a platform for not only design but technology. Specifically the concept shows the car as a fully integrated part of the networked world. It is with this concept that BMW presents the potential of current and future in-car technology for optimizing comfort, safety and infotainment.

But it’s design where we tend to focus first and the ConnectedDrive Concept gives us a unique glimpse into the future of BMW. Most notable is the shark-nose that is eerily reminiscent of 1980′s BMWs. With the headlights nestled below the hood and in the grille this concept, more than any in recent memory, reinterprets some of BMW’s classic design language. But it’s not merely a retro statement as these design elements help the car work within EU pedestrian impact regulations while keeping the car as slippery as possible.

Perhaps just as important it looks great. In fact the original drawings (which promise something even a bit more aggressive) give us even a further glimpse into what could come in the future. Yes the connected elements of this concept are fascinating. But for us it’s the packaging and the design that give us something to look forward to.

The interior is divided into three layers – comfort, infotainment and safety – each with a corresponding light installation. Each layer is defined by a colour, rhythm, motion and texture and, through the transparent surfaces the path taken by the information can be seen via fiber optic lighting.

The first layer focuses on safety, with a red light wrapping around the driver and coming together in a cone on the bonnet. This represents the flow of safety-specific information and the driver’s focus on the road ahead. The second layer encompasses the safety layer and extends to the passenger cell, focusing on infotainment. This layer promotes active social exchangement between the driver and passenger and is outlined by the blue ribbon of light. The final layer, defined by the green light flow, concentrates on the interaction of the vehicle with the world around it. The emphasis is on the outside of the vehicle, starting and ending with the two antennas, in place of wing mirrors, providing the data link to the surrounding environment.

The layering principal in the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive requires individual components to perform a number of roles. This can be seen in the headlights and rear lights with their integrated sensors monitoring the traffic and external environment which feed information directly to the driver allowing him to take appropriate action.

The concept embodies the dynamic BMW design language with its long wheelbase, set back seating position and long bonnet but combines it with taut surfaces and distinctive flowing lines. This results in an interesting play of light and shadow making the car appear as if it is accelerating even at a standstill. The sliding doors, inspired by those on the BMW Z1, disappear into the body of the car. This allows the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive to be driven with the doors open, emphasising the link between the vehicle and its environment.

The BMW Vision ConnectedDrive showcases the current and future capabilities of BMW’s ConnectedDrive technologies. Advanced Head-Up Display takes the technology currently available in production BMWs even further, placing a three-dimensional display of key information in the direct sight line of the driver, eliminating the need for the driver’s eyes to refocus. The three-dimensional display allows the real view to be overlaid with virtual information, highlighting hazards allowing the driver to assimilate all of the information quickly and take appropriate action.

In addition to Advanced Head-Up Display the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive is equipped with a freely programmable instrument cluster to provide the driver with additional information, optically emphasised to a greater or lesser degree. While for the first time passengers get their own information display, out of the driver’s field of vision, allowing them to evaluate information, music or navigation details and pass them onto the driver with a simple touch of a finger.

According to Australia’s The Age BMW will reveal a small roadster concept at the Geneva Motor show in early March. But the big question is, what wheels will be driven? Rumors have suggested BMW will be leveraging the FWD MINI platform for many of its small cars in the years ahead. While we were never enamored with the previous generation of the 6 Series from BMW, in fact we did not shed a single tear when we heard it would be leaving the market a year early, this newly premiered 6 actually has piqued our interest. Like BMW concepts of series cars in the past we expect the production car to be nearly identical to this “concept” being shown. Its beautiful lines, more efficient power plants and advanced technology make it more of a car individuals strive to drive than in the past. From the avant garde interior, to the technologically advanced lighting system and twin kidney grilles this car more than ever screams BMW innovation and design.

Poised to hit the market as a 2012 model this new 6 Series will compete with the like of Porsches, Jags and Astins on the boulevards and in the lots of the local country club. There is one caveat with this new 6- that like the Porsche it is said to be able to handle the twisties and put a big fat grin on the owner’s face when pushed to the limits.

The following are the highlights as described by the worldwide media release with notes on planned availability in the US market.

2010 Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris Highlights. * World premiere: the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé.

The 2010 Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris is the setting for the world premiere of the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé. This design study for a premium-class 2+2-seater is the embodiment of a passion for aesthetics and dynamics. Flowing lines and aesthetically sculpted surfaces define the design of the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé, in which classic BMW coupé styling cues are given a modern rendition. Among the innovative details featured in this concept study are full LED headlights and a newly designed, freestanding Control Display for the iDrive operating system.

Fascinating vision: BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé.

The BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé is a fascinating vision that blends traditional values with innovative design language. This concept model, unveiled for the first time at the 2010 Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris, showcases the experience the brand has acquired in more than 70 years of building sporty and elegant coupés. It also paves the way for a new, aesthetically powerful and dynamic interpretation of this breed of vehicle. With the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé, the German premium carmaker is presenting a new definition of luxury-class 2+2-seater driving enjoyment and exclusiveness. The powerful proportions and sporty yet elegant lines of the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé provide the perfect packaging for its dynamic performance and personality. All the classic hallmarks of a BMW coupé are present, including the stretched bonnet, the short front overhang, a passenger compartment set well to the rear, and a low silhouette incorporating a dynamically flowing roofline. The principal bodywork lines run the full length of the concept model, and there is a strong sense of stylistic unity between all the different parts of the vehicle. The lines and surfaces seem to ripple out in a dynamic, pulsating wave. Eye-catching features of the concept model include the new LED headlights, which combine the typical BMW twin round headlight format with innovative lighting technology. The all-LED design, featured for the first time on a BMW, produces a strikingly bright white light with very sharp and intensive road illumination. The functionality includes Adaptive Headlights, i.e. the headlight beam follows the road at all times. The LED rings for the daytime driving lights accentuate the characteristic, unmistakable BMW front-end styling.

The interior of the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé conveys functionality, elegance and exclusiveness. The fluent lines and smooth transitions in the cockpit area produce an ambience that extends to the whole interior, embracing both the front- and the rear-seat occupants. The driver-centric interior design is typical of BMW and a hallmark of a sports coupé. Keynotes are the exceptionally stylish design in the centre console area and, providing a further innovative touch, the freestanding 10.2-inch iDrive Control Display in the centre of the instrument panel. The concept model is also equipped with the Head-Up Display system that offers world-beating functionality and display quality. For maximum listening quality, the hi-fi system was designed especially for the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé using high-quality components from Danish audio systems specialists Bang & Olufsen.

A proud tradition: the BMW coupé.

As a byword for sporty driving enjoyment, coupé models have a special place in the history of the BMW brand. The BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé is the latest chapter in a tradition which stretches back 70 years and is richly packed with memorable racing wins and many legendary icons in automotive design. Milestones in this evolution include the BMW 327 and BMW 327/28 models, the racing coupés based on the BMW 328, the BMW 503, the BMW 3200 CS, the BMW 2000 CS, the large coupés based on the BMW 3.0 CSi and, from 1976 onwards, the BMW 6 Series models.

With its flawless elegance and impressive performance the BMW 327 Coupé, unveiled in 1938, quickly established itself as the brand’s most exclusive pre-war model. With barely a pause, the dynamic performance was then taken a stage further by the BMW 327/28, whose 80 hp sports engine was taken from the BMW 328 Roadster model. In 1940, a one-off coupé version of the BMW 328, driven by Fritz Huschke von Hanstein and Walter Bäumer, was the overall winner of the Mille Miglia endurance race. This triumph came courtesy of rigorous lightweight design, optimized aerodynamics and a powerful and reliable 136 hp in-line six-cylinder engine. In other words, the winning vehicle displayed characteristics which still form the backbone for the design of the more sporty BMW models to this day. The traditional coupé values were given a modern interpretation in the BMW Mille Miglia Concept Coupé, unveiled by BMW in 2006 as a salute to the unsung heroes behind the BMW 328’s triumph – the engineers.

In their respective decades, both the BMW 503 from 1955, designed by Albrecht Graf Goertz, and the BMW 2000 CS created by Wilhelm Hofmeister and unveiled in 1965 set new standards in coupé design. The slim pillars and svelte roofline, the narrow BMW twin-kidney grille and the Hofmeister kink at the base of the C-pillar, named after BMW’s chief designer of the time, gave the BMW 2000 CS an unmistakable and elegant styling signature. The design language was developed a stage further in the next-generation model – as was the sports performance, with an even more powerful range of engines. The proportions of the big coupé were refined and improved by a longer bonnet, while twin round headlights gave the front end a characteristic sporty appearance. By 1973 the BMW 3.0 CS, BMW 3.0 CSi and BMW 3.0 CSL models had been launched, powered by in-line six-cylinder engines developing up to 206 hp. In motor sport, too, these models held sway for many years. The BMW 6 Series has similarly stirred and spurred a passion for sporty driving in a stylish and luxurious two-door format for many years, right through to the BMW M6 Coupé of today with its unmatched dynamism and athleticism and its 373 kW/507 hp high-revving ten-cylinder engine.

A BMW coupé’s design is a stylish and authentic expression of superior sports performance rooted in the company’s unique experience in engine and chassis development. The proportions, the aesthetically powerful design language and the flowing lines epitomize the characteristic blend of dynamism and unassailable elegance – a design principle that underpins the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé as well, though in a modern and innovative interpretation. The concept model is an extremely sporty premium luxury-class 2+2-seater. Taking passion for the Ultimate Driving Machine to new levels in the BMW 6 Series range, it is an expression of driving enjoyment at its most exclusive.

The low silhouette of the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé points to the low centre of gravity, which is reflected in agile, surefooted handling. The long bonnet and a passenger cell which is set well back provide advance warning of the Coupé’s eager responsiveness and its dynamic power delivery and sprinting performance. The powerful sculpting of the bodywork surfaces, particularly near the rear wheels, gives the concept model an even more athletic appearance, while the roofline in particular, flowing elegantly towards the trailing edge at the rear, is a reminder of the concept’s carefully honed aerodynamic qualities. Dynamic wave effect underpins naturally flowing lines and surfaces.

The bodywork surfaces are defined by bold, precise lines, which divide the body into a mix of concave- and convex-contoured surfaces. The counterpoint between lines and surfaces lends the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé a natural, authentic aura of sportiness. This interplay is reminiscent of wave motion on the surface of an ocean, generated by the ebb and flow of wind and tides. All the bodywork lines are continuous and uninterrupted throughout their entire length. They connect the front, side and rear sections of the vehicle to create a sculpted body shape that radiates harmony from every angle.

Road-hugging front end: hallmark BMW styling cues in a new interpretation.

The wide, low-slung, road-hugging front-end stance of the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé is an accurate reflection of its sporting temperament. The bonnet surfaces are defined by four lines which gradually converge at the front of the vehicle. The two inner lines follow a trajectory towards the BMW emblem, while the two outer lines terminate at the outer edge of the BMW kidney grille, which is wider at the top than at the bottom. The BMW kidney grille marks the front extremity of the body, its slight forward rake imparting the first taste of sportiness to come. The effect is increased by the slight angle in the upper part of the kidney grille bars, which sport hardened glass inserts. This elaborate sculpting gives the hallmark kidney grille an extra-luxurious and avant-garde touch.

The headlights, which are set well back, and below them a bumper contour line that flows downwards and outwards, make the kidney grille appear even more dominant. The lower air intake runs the full width of the front end and is divided by horizontal chrome struts with an undulating surface. A crease defines the lower edge of the air intake and wraps round to the outer sides, where a slight curve draws attention to the wheels and thus to the sense of width. Sharply raked foglamps placed well to the outside of the bonnet, and powered by three adjacent LED light units, further accentuate the width and bold stance of the concept model.

Innovative technology, enhanced styling, typical BMW night-time look: all-LED twin round headlights make their debut.

The characteristic front-end appearance of the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé is partly down to the typical BMW twin round headlights. The outward-pointing top part of the trapezoidal headlight housing guides the eye to the widely flared wheel arches. With this concept model, BMW is for the first time presenting all-LED headlights with Adaptive Headlight functionality. LEDs are used for all functions, from the dipped and main beam to the sidelights and daytime running lights, and the direction indicators. The LED accent lights which cut across the top of the twin round headlights create the hooded, intent look characteristic of BMW models.

The innovative lighting technology is accentuated by the upscale styling. One of the cylindrical headlights emerges slightly further than the other from the interior of the light unit, thereby preserving the twin round headlight look even when viewed from the side. The headlights, which are leveled off at their lower edge, are bisected by horizontal ribs containing the LEDs. The diodes produce a strikingly bright white light that provides particularly intensive road illumination. They also reduce dazzle and have very low energy consumption. In addition the all-LED headlights are used for both the dipped and the main beam functions, while Adaptive Headlight functionality is incorporated as well. That means the headlights follow the road, swiveling in line with the steering angle and at a speed matched to that of the vehicle. The sidelights and daytime driving lights take the form of LED rings, the lower edge of which is leveled off – a characteristic theme of this innovative lighting technology. Horizontal strips of six LEDs under the twin headlights are used for the direction indicators. Their lines match those of the similarly horizontally styled LED foglamps, which are located in the lower air intake. Side view: athletic elegance points to sporting supremacy.

The BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé is a premium-class concept that combines outstanding sports performance with style and assurance. At the visual level, these characteristics are communicated by a design that combines the athletic aura of a sports car on the one hand with luxurious elegance on the other. This is particularly striking in side view, where classic BMW coupé features, presented here in a new interpretation, deftly highlight the distinctive character of this concept model.

The elegantly elongated silhouette of the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé presents the familiar hallmarks of a sporty BMW 2+2, comprising a long hood and wheelbase, a passenger compartment which is set well to the rear and a dynamically flowing roofline. The athletic character of the concept model is generated by sculpted surfaces whose powerful flowing and merging contours create an authentic sports feel. The side view of the vehicle is defined by four striking lines. The shoulder line runs in a fluent sweep from the headlights to the front wheel arch and on through the waistline and C-pillar to the tail. The typical BMW swage line runs parallel to this. It starts in the gill high up in the front side panel and runs steadily upwards via the door handle to the rear lights. It accentuates the elongated look of the body and, in conjunction with the door sill line, creates a dynamic wedge shape. Below the swage line, a character line, which likewise starts in the side gill, follows a downward trajectory initially and then runs parallel to the door sill line and on into the tail. The precise interplay of lines and surfaces is most apparent in the rear wheel arch area. The powerful bulge directly above the rear wheels reduces the prominence of the contour line in this area, giving a sense of natural forces harnessed in a consistent and unified body design.

The alloy wheels specially designed for the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé again tie in closely with the sporty and exclusive character of this concept model. The 20-inch multi-spoke wheels are a one-off design milled from a solid aluminum block. The individual spokes have an elaborate three-dimensional design, with precisely defined contours and weight-reducing milled openings running parallel to the direction of travel.

Rear design: low visual centre of gravity and accent on width.

The rear styling is dominated by horizontal lines which, in conjunction with the wide track and wide wheel arch flares, accentuate the sense of width and the powerful stance of the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé. The shoulder areas protrude clearly in rear view, so that even from this angle there is no mistaking the athletic character of the vehicle. The slightly concave rear part of the boot lid, along with the bumper, the diffuser-style rear apron and all other elements of the rear end, are wide and low-slung. The visual centre of gravity is strikingly low and road-hugging – an effect that is generated mainly by a V-shaped line running from the sides of the boot lid down to the low-mounted number plate surround.

The crease at the lower edge of the body wraps round from the sides of the Coupé into the rear and finishes in the tailpipe surrounds, which are set well to the outside and enclose matt-polished trapezoidal exhaust tips. The low-rise, horizontally mounted reflectors, which have been removed to the bumper, likewise underline the sense of width in rear view.

The typical BMW L-shaped rear light clusters of the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé create a further visual link between the sides and the rear of the vehicle. They are split into two parts and extend into the boot lid. Inside the units, two LED light strips create the typical BMW night-time look. This effect is enhanced by the L-shaped lower light unit. The direction indicator, tail light and brake light are likewise LED-powered.

Interior: luxurious, avant-garde and stylish.

The BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé has a full glass roof which lets a great deal of light into the interior of the 2+2-seater, highlighting the generous interior ambience and the light-touch interior design. In the interior, too, the tone is set by fluent lines and harmonious surfaces. In the vicinity of the driver and front passenger, the design of the instrument panel, centre console and door trim stresses bold, dynamic surfaces and sculpted transitions, giving a sense of exclusive safety and security. At the rear, two comfortable single seats offer lavish headroom, legroom and shoulder room, providing first-class comfort even on long journeys.

The surfaces are defined by gently flowing lines which run throughout the interior, creating an effect reminiscent of rippling wave motion and evoking the impression of forward-thrusting dynamism. Driver-centric design, harmonious integration of the centre console and instrument panel.

The BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé’s cockpit also takes the familiar BMW driver-centric design to new levels, in keeping with the distinctively sporty character of this concept model. The centre section of the instrument panel, featuring the iDrive Control Display, the central air vents and the audio and climate controls, is inclined slightly but visibly towards the driver. The electronic gear selector and the Drive Dynamic Control buttons are mounted on the driver’s side of the front console. The front passenger side, meanwhile, which is slightly higher than the driver’s side, sweeps up with a slight flourish into the upper part of the instrument panel. High-quality leather trim with double stitching in a contrasting color accentuates the dynamic transition between the centre console and the instrument panel.

The forward-surging wave theme can also be seen in the contouring of the door panel trim, where the precise interplay between concave and convex surfaces produces a natural duality and tension. The window sill line extends in a gentle sweep into the instrument panel, guiding the eye towards the road. Below this, the door paneling is intersected by a trim component which links the front part of the passenger compartment with the rear. It starts at the rear window sill, then continues forwards and initially downwards, narrowing as it approaches the door paneling, then rising slightly and becoming wider again in the front part of the vehicle. This creates an upward sweep running through the window sill and into the instrument panel.

On the driver’s side of the cockpit the eye is drawn to the black-panel instrument cluster. The traditional-style circular dials are generated electronically, using advanced display technology. At rest, all displays are invisible, only springing to life when the engine is started. Black-panel technology is also used for the audio and climate displays on the centre console. A galvanized strip draws a horizontal dividing line across the cockpit below the instrument cluster and also marks the lower edge of the central air vents. This line is then carried over on the front passenger side into a crease on the glove compartment. Flatscreen-style Control Display and Head-Up Display.

The BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé is equipped with the latest-generation iDrive control system as featured on current production models. That system’s innovative principle of separating the control unit from the display is taken a stage further in this concept model. As before, the Controller – situated on the centre console – allows intuitive operation of vehicle-related, infotainment, navigation and telecommunications functions. However, the Control Display now for the first time takes the form of a freestanding 10.2-inch display with high-quality galvanized chrome surround. This display shows the various iDrive menus and options, the audio system status messages and the navigation maps. The small depth of this high-resolution display gives it a flatscreen look, while the new positioning of the display – extending further into the passenger compartment – also impacts on the centre console, which appears to rise more steeply, accentuating the cockpit-style character of the instrument panel.

The iDrive operating system allows functions to be intuitively controlled with minimal driver distraction from the road and traffic. For additional convenience and safety, the BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé is also fitted with a Head-Up Display. Developed by BMW, this system offers unique functionality and allows important driver information to be projected directly onto the windscreen in the driver’s line of sight. For example, in addition to current vehicle speed, the Head-Up Display also shows status messages and warnings from the driver assistance systems, Check Control messages and navigation instructions – all without the driver having to take his or her eyes off the road.

We know for a variety of reasons that this concept has nothing to do with the 1001 front wheel drive model BMW is developing as some outlets are reporting. We know that this car is not electric powered only (it has a tailpipe). What we now see in better detail is the front lights, which are looking a lot like the Vision Efficient Dynamics.

We also know is that this is NOT a performance car because of the width of the tires since the tires are narrow, something we all need to take turns at high speeds and get the power down to the tarmac are wide tires; or do we?

One of the easiest ways to cut drag on a car is to decrease the width of its tires, so from an efficiency standpoint that is something that must be done if you are trying to design the most efficient car possible. The one caveat is, that by decreasing the width of the contact patch it decreases the overall lateral traction alloted to the vehicle.

When you design a car like this you think outside the box, way outside the box and try things that are non conventional to give you the upper hand. BMW could have used variable suspension geometry to help curb handling issues with this car but that is costly and rather difficult to implement, they went another route to making sure they could offer efficiency and performance.

BMW and a well established tire manufacturer have been rumored to be working on developing a narrower, low rolling resistance tire with a variable radius as part of the Efficient Dynamics push and this is the first we are seeing of it. The outside radius of the tire being greater than the inside.

This new tire is being designed to improve the shape of the contact patch, less so the size of it. As the outside wall collapses down on contact with the ground it will widen the contact patch and (through some very interesting engineering) somehow maintain enough stability so as to offer razor sharp handling (anything less would be a failure on this project).

The BMW marketing geniuses are back at it, they have gotten our attention. Before we delve into what we have a strange feeling (we get those pretty regularly) this “Concept” will be let us rewind to our time with the actual Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept car.

While not anticipated to be introduced as a single production model the Vision is said to showcase future drivetrain, efficiency techniques and design language that will be used in production models. This revolutionary concept is designed with the intent of being powered by 2 electric motors and a three-cylinder diesel engine to produce 356 hp and 590 lb-ft. It would rocket the car from 0-60 in 4.8 seconds while achieving almost 63 miles per gallon.

From pen to the vehicle you see pictured below in our galleries took the design team and staff of almost 30, eight months to produce in its current form. Extensive use of advanced aerodynamic techniques were used on the body and wheels to keep drag at a minimum, allowing for greater efficiency. Active aerodynamics are also utilized to improve drag and overall operating efficiency, the front grill has the ability to open or close depending on the operating temperature of the diesel motor (a technology that is currently utilized in the EU market on some models).

This 2+2 coupe uses space saving concepts to assure adequate interior comfort. This is achieved by allowing the Lithium Polymer battery packs to live within the center line of the undercarriage from the front to the rear. These batteries would also permit the car to run solely on battery power for 31 miles. In design it can be used solely as a diesel, electric only or both simultaneously.

The interior electronics and climate control systems are great departures from current vehicles with a key focus on keeping resistance, weight and electrical draw to a minimum. These elements allow greater vehicle efficiency by placing less demand on the batteries and engine.

In person this vehicle is something to behold, it is a complete departure from current BMW design and looks to be a car from the future (Marty may have even seen one at some point in his travels).

Worth noting is that the original Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept did not actually contain a full working diesel/hybrid drivetrain in it when it debuted (it was powered by a small electric motor). Back when we viewed the original concept we were promised that in the future we will see the proposed system in a vehicle as the engineers are hard at work finalizing it.

That is where the “Don’tblogaboutthis” Concept car comes in. This car is a mule of sorts clad like the VED concept. Being a dead in the water 6er we know it has nothing to do with the actual chassis and or body work. The purpose of the car appears to be for testing a drive train and other efficiency items. The tires and small single exhaust are dead giveaways that this vehicle has a purpose that is based around new efficiency technologies rather than testing an actual vehicle.

We would not be surprised to finally see a full working driveline and production components in a VED like car at Paris.
