A while back we had reported BMWNA was working on publishing a list of recommended oils to be used in gasoline engines.
This was a welcomed move as oil specifics have not been listed in the owner’s manual and some people like to have an independent garage (or alone) complete a mid recommended interval oil change. Then there is the occasional need to top the engine off; it has always been a question as to whether that quart of oil, the life blood of the motor, was up to spec.
The oils listed below meet BMW’s Long-life rating and are acceptable for use in BMW Passenger vehicles and SAVs in the US market with gasoline engines. (Excludes ///M and Alpina models).
BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Approved Synthetic Oils for the US Market
Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30
Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40
Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30
Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30
Use only oils with an API rating of SM or higher.

We can officially say it is official. BMWNA will be introducing the 2010 models of the 5 and 6 Series soon. Production will begin in March.
This will intro the “new” iDrive (CIC) into these models along with some other cosmetic tweaks. It is worth noting that if you do not choose the optional Navigation system you will receive the current iDrive system (CCC). We will update you with more info as we receive it.
Ever wondered what when into a car from BMW Individual? Here’s a new promotional video that demonstrates this in context of the new BMW 650i. For those in the US this will be BMW Individual’s second car in the US (if you don’t count the E46 ZHP and E36 M3 Lightweight which technically were both Individual projects).
We are still quite a ways away from the release of the new 6er but it has already begun its testing. There are few facts about this car right now and a lot of speculation but we are fairly sure you can expect a folding hardtop, a DCT transmission and design cues from the CS concept.
We will of course keep you up to date with the latest news as we hear it.
Update
It appears that the new controller is in fact making its way into the 2009 models but the new system may not be at this time. We are awaiting screen shots!

Over the last several days we have become more confused at the situation with the 5 (and even 6). While we understand that BMWNA’s position has not changed in stating the model will not be included in the upgrade why then are customers picking up cars equipped with the system when the model was not scheduled for the update?
We have received info from several customers stating that their cars have the new system. Both ahead of the November EU date and the unannounced US date.
Also, in the Paris guide we posted yesterday it even states that the 5/6 will receive the updated system, though not US specific. Either someone dropped the ball on this or we are missing something here…. If you do not take our word for it, the photos do not lie….
Our friends over at BMW Blog are posting similar info so this further confirms what we thought all along!
First, we would like to thank all of our readers for all of the comments, feedback and information that you have provided. We will continue to try to meet your needs and answer your questions as best we can.
Over the next several weeks and months BMW will be introducing a wide variety of new or refreshed cars and technology. Today we thought we would take some time to sketch a rough timeline of these and what they entail while also linking you to our original stories. Much of this information is geared towards those in the US, so things may vary a bit for those reading in other markets.
It looks like the BMW 650i will receive a more aggressive Sport Package (at least in the EU) similar to what is currently done with the 550i. This secondary refresh improves some of the controversial styling of the original look of the car and will be available for the coupe and convertible.

We believe in the old school BMW ownership experience. We believe in garage nights with a six pack and some friends. We believe in 2002s, in E30 M3s and E34 540s with the 6 speed. We believe in progress in both design and engineering but we haven't lost sight of what made the brand and its products great all those years ago. And yes, we believe in the manual transmission.
We long for the days of the wave and for the days of roll-up windows. Yet we love the gadgets on the inside and the xenons on the outside.
In short, we can't get enough of BMWs. This is BimmerFile.
