The following story has been corrected to indicate that the X6 Active Hybrid will not be sold in the US as a 2012 model, it has not been confirmed to end production for other markets at this time. The original story stated that production had ended.
The X6 Active Hybrid was BMW’s first foray into hybrids- a joint development with Daimler, Chrysler and General Motors. Entering foreign ground and jumping into an increasingly competitive hybrid market, BMW set about making a vehicle that was more powerful and just slightly more efficient. This created an even more limited client base than the base X6 was targeted at. The original price for the X6 Active Hybrid at launch in late December 2009 (2010 model) was just shy of ninety-thousand dollars. One of the most expensive vehicles in the BMW lineup. Sales were limited to say the least. And as of today, the era of BMW’s lone two mode, nickel metal hydride hybrid has come to a quiet and abrupt end in the US.

BMW is set to release a number of performance accessories at Frankfurt. However perhaps none are more important than what you see above – an early look at the next generation of BMW Performance parts. More specifically what we see above is the 1 Series Performance Study – a concept for BMW Performance to show off some of their new ideas. But don’t let the word concept fool you – these accessories are pretty much final. And from the aero-kit to the wheels it’s a bold new look for BMW Performance.
Also shown for the first time are the full range of BMW M “Performance Stripes”. The design follows the M3 Performance Stripes released earlier this year – starting low in the front and extending to just behind the rear fender. They’re a little disappointing to our eyes but we’ll reserve full judgement until we see them in the flesh.
Official Release: The intriguing character of BMW M cars is further emphasised by the BMW M Performance range of accessories. These complement those available for the BMW M3 and include new products for the power train, the suspension, aerodynamics and the cockpit and have now been extended to include other models. Wing mirror covers and a rear spoiler are available for the BMW 1 Series M Coupe. These accessories are manufactured from carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), handmade by BMW. In addition, an eye-catching BMW M Performance kidney-shaped radiator grille is available in a black, high-gloss finish.

We have discussed tri-turbo gasoline powerplants here of late but several years ago the big talk was how BMW was working on diesels with 3 turbos. Today that news is front and center once again thanks to insiders (such as Herr/Scott 26) spilling the beans on some of BMW’s possible future offerings. The 3 liter inline six tri-turbo diesel will make its way into the Life Cycle Impulse of the X6 and is rumored to have more than 350 hp. The next vehicle to accept the diesel transplant with performance in mind will be the 6 Gran Coupe.

With this release BMW Performance moves into the M Division’s territory with a M3 exhaust option. We’ll have more on this (and a few other surprises) in the coming weeks and month. Until then you can read about the new offerings below.
Official Release: Parallel to the current model initiative, the range of Original BMW Accessories offers a multitude of new possibilities to enhance the pleasure of driving a BMW to suit one’s personal needs. The choice of products presented at the 2011 Geneva International Motor Show focuses predominantly on newly developed retrofit components, which contribute towards an even more dynamic driving experience. For example, the components currently included in the BMW Performance product line are now available for the new BMW 1 Series Coupe and the new BMW 1 Series Convertible on show to the general public in Geneva for the first time. For both models the range of Original BMW Accessories also includes sport stripes for the bonnet and the rear, as well as for the roof of the BMW 1 Series Coupe. The decorative element comprising two parallel-running stripes of different width is available in either white or black.

Note: It’s a short(ish) show this week due to a special BimmerCast later today involving a world premier. Stay tuned.
This week we start off talking about the X1 and BMW’s plans for its smallest crossover in the largest market. And yes, we dish a few things that you won’t read anywhere else. Then turning out attention to the X6, 5er GT we ask the question, why? And more importantly why an X6 and no 130i hatchback.
And then we get to the most important questions, what happened to the wagons?!
