With 2012 BMW is making a variety of changes across the line-up. Here’s a full rundown of every change on every model.

All Vehicles

BMW Apps is available as a stand-alone option on all models for $250. With this addition, the Smartphone Integration will be removed as a stand-alone option and now included in BMW Apps.

1 Series

The 2012 Model Year for 128i and 135i models began in March 2011. At that time the following changes occurred:

Standard Equipment Changes

• iPod/USB Adapter added to all 1 Series
• Power Seats and Lumbar Support added to 135i Coupe and Convertibles.
• Through-Load added to 128i/135i Convertibles.
• New 17-inch Star-spoke wheel replaced standard 16-inch wheel on 128i Convertible.
• 17-inch Star-spoke wheel now standard on 128i Coupe
• New 18-inch V-spoke wheel with mixed-sized performance tires replaced the 17-inch wheels with all-season tires on the 135i Convertible.

Options

• Automatic Transmission now a no-charge option on 128i Coupe and Convertible.
• Double Clutch Transmission price lowered on 135i Coupes and Convertibles
• Vermillion Red Metallic and Marrakesh Brown Metallic exterior colors available for all models
• Oyster Boston Leather replaced Lemon Boston Leather
• Alpine White Trim added for all models as a no-charge option.
• New 17-inch Star-spoke wheel available with all-season tires as a no-cost alternative to the standard 18-inch wheel with performance tires on the 135i models.

Package Changes

• Sport Package has been eliminated for the 135i Coupes and Convertibles.
• Value Package eliminated on all models (included leather and iPod/USB)
• Premium Package now includes leather on all models. Power Seats and Lumbar Support have been eliminated from Package for 135i Coupes and Convertibles as they are now standard.
• Cold weather package n– longer includes Through Load for the Convertibles (now standard) and Ski Bag for the Coupes.

As of September 2011 production, the following changes took place:

Standard Equipment Changes

• Hands-free Bluetooth connection added for all models
• Floor mats added for all models

3 Series

Options

• Automatic Transmission now a no-charge option (previously $1,375) on all 3 Series except 335d where it is already standard.
• Double Clutch Transmission price has been lowered on 335is Coupe and Convertible.

Package Changes

• Coupes and Convertibles: The M Sport Package takes the place of the Sport Package.
• 17-inch all-season tires now standard on 3 Series Coupe xDrive models.

5 Series

• BMW Apps will be available as a stand-alone option
• Smartphone Integration now included in BMW Apps.
• The 528i introduces the first ever 4 cylinder engine in a 5 Series in the US – The new TwinPower Turb– 4-cylinder engine with high precision direct injection, turbocharging according to the Twin Scroll principle, double VANOS variable camshaft timing and VALVETRONIC variable valve control.
• Auto Start/Stop is standard on the 2012 528i and 535i. Options
• xDrive all-wheel drive available for the 528i Sedan.

The all-new 6 Series

Beginning with September production, these options are now available for the 650i Convertible:

• M Sport Package
• Full LED Headlights
• New Bang & Olufsen sound system

Additional Options

• xDrive all-wheel drive available for both the 650i Coupe and Convertible. The 0-60 time for the 650i xDrive Coupe is 4.7 seconds, 0.2-seconds quicker than the RWD model. The 0-60 time for the 650i xDrive Convertible is 4.8 seconds. 0.1 seconds quicker than the RWD model.

640i Coupe and Convertible

The new 640i Coupe and Convertible will feature a higher performance version of BMW’s N55 TwinPower Turb– 3.0-liter inline six. In 640i models this engine produces 315 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. The 0-60 times for both models is 5.5 seconds.

• Auto Start/stop will be standard.

7 Series

The 2012 Model Year for the 740i/Li, 750i/Li (including xDrive models) and ALPINA B7 models began with March 2011 production. At that time the following changes took place:

Standard Equipment Changes

• iPod/USB Adapter, Sport Steering Wheel and Rear-view Camera added to all models.
• 19-inch wheels with all-season tires and Premium Hi-Fi added to the V-8 models.

Package Changes

• Driver Assistance Package now includes Side and top-view camera for all models. On the 740i/Li and 750i/Li and xDrive models, the package als– includes Head-Up Display.
• The M Sport Package n– longer includes Active Roll Stabilization (ARS) for all models. On the 750i/Li and xDrive models, the package price was further reduced due to the addition of 19-inch wheels as standard.

ActiveHybrid 7

Remained a 2011 model but received the following changes as of March 2011 production:

Standard Equipment Changes

• New 19-inch wheels replace 19-inch Aer– wheel as standard
• Add iPod/USB Adapter
• A number of features were removed from the standard equipment list and made optional:
– Anthracite Headliner
– Leather Dashboard
– Headup Display
– Active Front Seats and Ventilated Front Seats

Package Changes

• Due to the removal of active and ventilated front seats as standard equipment, the ActiveHybrid 7 will have the same Luxury Seating package as offered as an option on the 740i/Li and 750i/Li.
• 6-disc DVD changer added to Rear Seat Entertainment Package

The ActiveHybrid 7 models as well as the 760Li became 2012 models beginning with September 2011 production.

M3 Sedan (MY11, ends production October 2011)

Standard Equipment Changes:

None.

Optional Equipment Changes:

• BMW Assist, iPod/USB Adaptor, and Smartphone Integration have been bundled into a single option with a retail price of $750. The optional Navigation system will be combined with iPod/USB, BMW Assist and is priced at $2,150 on the M3 Sedan.

M3 Coupe & M3 Convertible (MY12)

Standard Equipment Changes:

• For model year 2012, the M3 Coupe & Convertible gain standard anti-theft alarm system, floor mats, as well as iPod/USB Adaptor, Bluetooth, and BMW Assist.

Optional Equipment Changes:

• Stand Alone Options for the 2012 M3 Coupe and Convertible have been adjusted to reflect the new standard equipment and the new Navigation package, which is priced at $1,350 to adjust for standard BMW Assist, Bluetooth, and iPod/USB Adaptor.

Packages Changes:

• The former Convenience Package and Premium Package 2 are now combined into a single Premium Package. This change bundles the most-common M3 options and packages together, and the power rear sunshade has been added to a package on the M3 Coupe for the first time.

The 2012 M3 Convertible BMW Individual Composition Package

• The package is priced at $5,000 and includes the buyer’s choice of three unique metallic exterior colors (Ruby Black, Azurite Black, and Moonstone), three unique leather colors with additional leather surface area (Champagne, Platinum, and Rust Brown), as well as Individual Piano Finish Black interior trim.

Z4 Roadster

• The Z4 sDrive28i featuring the new BMW TwinPower Turb– 4-cylinder engine with high precision direct injection, turbocharging according to the Twin Scroll principle, double VANOS variable camshaft timing and VALVETRONIC variable valve control replaces the Z4 sDrive30i as the base model.
• Options Automatic Transmission will be offered as a no-charge option on the 30i.
• Double Clutch Transmission price has been lowered on the 35i.

X3

2012 X3 (as of October Production)

Both Models

• Black high-gloss interior trim standard
• Floor mats standard
• Heated rear seats and headlight washers n– longer included in Cold Weather Package

Official Release: BMW of North America, LLC today announced jointly with Coulomb Technologies, Inc. that drivers of the forthcoming BMW ActiveE all-electric vehicle will be able to take advantage of the expansion of the ChargePoint® Network into the Boston Metro. More than 100 ChargePoint stations for EVs will be made available to the State through Coulomb’s $37 million ChargePoint America DOE program. The stations will be located in the Boston metropolitan area, within the Route 495 Beltway. Drivers of the BMW ActiveE will be able to conveniently and safely recharge their electric vehicle at any ChargePoint-enabled electric vehicle charging station in the US.

“We are pleased to be a part of the ChargePoint America program. Access to such a well established network will provide a significant measure of convenience for drivers of the ActiveE,” said Rich Steinberg, Manager – Electric Vehicle Operations and Strategy for BMW of North America. “Our drivers can feel confident that they can easily locate and recharge at any of the publically accessible ChargePoint stations in the United States. Partnerships like this one with Coulomb will reinforce the viability of EVs for daily transportation as we’ve already proven with the MINI E.”

BMW project i – research and development of tomorrow’s mobility.

The BMW ActiveE is the BMW Group’s next step towards an emission-free, mass-produced electric vehicle. Within the framework of project i, the BMW Group has been carrying out research and development work on the development of electrically powered vehicles. The ultimate goal is the concept of a Megacity Vehicle, the BMW i3 that meets the demands of a sustainable mobility solution for congested urban areas. For this reason, the drive components and battery technology that will be used in the i3 are being tested in the BMW ActiveE.

Ongoing field tests involving more than 600 MINI E cars, including 450 in the US, have already provided vital knowledge about the demands on future electrically powered production vehicles. Beginning in 2011 in the US, Europe and China, a test fleet of over 1000 BMW ActiveE vehicles will provide further valuable insights into the everyday use of the vehicle. The findings will serve to deepen the knowledge already gained on the everyday use of electric vehicles and to learn more about customer requirements. The feedback from customers testing the MINI E and the BMW ActiveE will be fed directly into series production of the i3, which is scheduled to launching under the i Brand in 2013.

E-mobility as a supporting pillar of BMW’s EfficientDynamics strategy.

In the development of groundbreaking vehicle concepts and drive technologies within the framework of the EfficientDynamics strategy, the BMW Group attaches key importance to electric mobility. With EfficientDynamics the BMW Group has for been very successful in reducing fuel consumption and emission levels through new and highly-efficient engine generations, enhancement of aerodynamics, the use of innovative lightweight construction and intelligent engine management – all with better performance in the bargain. Thanks to EfficientDynamics, the company is now able to achieve additional economy advantages through the further electrification of the drive train and hybrid technology. In the medium term, the BMW Group is developing vehicle concepts for emission-free mobility in larger urban areas. In the long term, EfficientDynamics means the transition to emission-free mobility – using both battery power and sustainably produced hydrogen.

On the way to sustainable, CO2-free mobility, the BMW ActiveE represents the next major milestone. Following the MINI E, the BMW ActiveE is the BMW Group’s second electric vehicle made available to consumers. With output of 170 horsepower and maximum torque of 184 lb-ft, the car accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in under nine seconds (preliminary), demonstrating the dynamic characteristics typical of a BMW. At the same time, newly developed lithium-ion batteries facilitate a vehicle range of around 100 miles in everyday driving.

Just like the MINI E, the BMW ActiveE is a conversion car, an electric vehicle based on the body and chassis of an existing car. The BMW ActiveE integrates all-electric drive components such as batteries, electric motor and power electronics in a vehicle body that was not originally intended for this purpose – and without significant compromise on space or interior comfort. Therefore, the BMW ActiveE is the BMW Group’s first electric vehicle to offer four fully-fledged seats and a seven cu-ft luggage compartment. The BMW ActiveE incorporates a pilot series version of the same drive train and batteries planned for the i3.

BMW EVolve Mobile App and Online Dashboard Gauges Compatibility for Electric Vehicle Prospects

The BMW EVolve will help drivers determine if their current transportation habits are compatible with the EV lifestyle regardless of their cars’ make or even their mode of transportation. The app provides tips from this group of seasoned drivers, based on their experiences thus far. Drivers also have access to real-world comparisons that put their energy and transportation usage into context such as equating a vehicle’s CO2 emissions to that of a home television. Ultimately, following three complete “trips” with the app, the user will be given a compatibility rating letting them know how an EV might fit into their daily life. The BMW EVolve App is available as a free download from both the Apple App Store and the Android Marketplace.

BMW Activate the Future

Earlier this month we gave you a sneak peak at the new Performance Edition 335i. Today we get the official release with a few new details. As previously mentioned the Performance Edition (option code ZMZ) will be available on all 335i models from now until the end of E90 production in November. Either the sport package or M Sport package is required but once you get past that hurdle PE is only an extra $550. It’s a surprising value for BMW but one that makes sense considering it’s a software only upgrade. Unlike the N54′s BMW Performance engine upgrade, the N55′s kit (which of course is the basis of this option) doesn’t need additional cooling and thus there is no extra hardware needed. In fact the only physical part of the kit are the black kidney grilles that come as part of the option.

One surprise in this release is that, not only will this kit be marketed to current 335i owners but also current 135i owners. We’re guessing this is meant just for N55 equipped cars with either the Sport or M Sport package.

Official Release: Performance breeds excitement and the BMW Performance Edition for the 2011 335i / xDrive Sedan ensures that new car buyers are in for that extra thrill beyond the outstanding performance that can already be realized with these exciting vehicles. Customers can now option their vehicles with a special BMW Performance Edition (option code ZMZ) that includes an all-new Power Kit, black kidney grilles and a “BMW Performance Edition” badge for only $550.

The BMW Performance Edition for the 335i highlights a Power Kit which consists of engine tuning software (no additional hardware): Increases the engine power output from 300 hp to 320hp and torque from 300 lb ft to 317 / 332 lb ft (manual / automatic transmission); this is the same horsepower rating as the 335is!

Acceleration from 0-60 mph is 0.2 seconds faster than the standard model and 0.5 seconds faster than the standard model from 50 mph to 75 mph. Emissions and fuel consumption ratings are unaffected by the power upgrade.

Black kidney grilles and a BMW Performance Edition badge will visually identify these Performance Edition vehicles from other 3 Series vehicles.

The BMW Performance Edition is offered only for a limited time on 335i Sedans through the end of 2011 which will ensure that owners of these vehicles will belong to a very special club of performance purists.

BMW is also pleased to announce that the contents of the BMW Performance Edition will be made available to existing 135i and 335i customers. Pricing to purchase the contents of this edition as a retrofit will be announced in August, 2011.

Official Release: To celebrate BMW’s sponsorship of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and inspired by the BMW London 2012 Performance Team, BMW has introduced two new Performance Edition models based on the popular BMW 1 Series and 3 Series.

Building on the sporting looks of the popular 1 Series Sports Hatch, the 1 Series Performance Edition comes with M aerodynamic bodystyling, dark chrome 18-inch M light alloy wheels, High-gloss Shadowline exterior trim, dark chrome exhaust tailpipe and dark line rear lights. Enhancing its sporty driving style is the addition of M Sport Suspension, while sport seats with Royal Blue stitching, M Sport multi-function leather steering wheel and gearshift leaver, floor mats with Royal Blue piping and London 2012 exterior badges complete the sporty look.

Available on the 116i, 116d and 118d three- and five-door models, the BMW 1 Series Performance Edition costs just £1,500 more than the equivalent ES model, representing a saving for customers of £1,725. Prices start at £19,530 OTR for a BMW 116i Performance Edition three-door.

The BMW 3 Series Saloon is also getting a Performance Edition revision. Available on the 118i and 118d, the BMW 3 Series Performance Edition will gain an M aerodynamic body kit, M sport multi-function leather steering wheel, sport seats, floor mats with blue piping, 18-inch light alloy wheel, chrome exhaust finisher and London 2012 exterior badges, making the BMW 3 Series a winner in the style race.

The BMW 3 Series Performance Edition costs just £500 more than the equivalent 3 Series ES Saloon, saving customers a substantial £2,030. Prices start at £23,195 OTR for the BMW 318i Performance Edition Saloon.

The BMW Performance Editions are available in a choice of four colours; Alpine White, Titanium Silver, Bluewater and Black Sapphire, and are on sale now.

Chosen by London 2012 as the Official Automotive Partner, BMW’s sustainability credentials will help London 2012 deliver a sustainable Games. As part of the partnership, BMW will supply a range of Efficient Dynamic diesel cars, hybrids and electric vehicles, achieving average CO2 emissions below the LOCOG target of 120g/km, as well as bicycles and motorcycles. The BMW London 2012 Performance Team will also benefit by being provided with vehicles to support them in their preparation for the Games.

With all the critical acclaim BMW’s most recent turbo inline six the N55 has received it isn’t surprising to see that BMW’s tuning arm, BMW Performance, has already had the engineers tweak out more power.

The stock N55 features a significant number of BMW Efficient Dynamics technologies, such as direct injection, Valvetronic and a single dual scroll turbo. This is the first factory tune we are aware of for an engine featuring Valvetronic, which essentially replaces the conventional throttle butterfly with a electrical mechanism that controls the amount of lift of the individual intake valves on each cylinder. The complexity of the system had aftermarket tuners baffled for sometime. BMW Performance doesn’t need to hack the system, they tune the code from the ground up to be factory stable. So what are the results? Read on…

The advantage of Valvetronic is the elimination of the pumping losses and air-flow disturbance caused by a conventional throttle butterfly creating instantaneous and precise engine response. There are of course emissions and efficiency improvements as well. In the end the system is a win-win and when you can get more power out of an engine without sacrificing longevity, efficiency or drivability we are all for it.

That is what the Power Kit will do. Indications are that the peak output will be increased to approximately 320hp and 330 lb-ft from the base 300/300. Like the current N54 twin turbo Power Kit for the 135 and 335, this new offering will be available as a port or dealer installed option. Cooling and software improvements are the mainstays for this kit but we will have more specifics including pricing and warranty information in the not so distant future.

With this release BMW Performance moves into the M Division’s territory with a M3 exhaust option. We’ll have more on this (and a few other surprises) in the coming weeks and month. Until then you can read about the new offerings below.

Official Release: Parallel to the current model initiative, the range of Original BMW Accessories offers a multitude of new possibilities to enhance the pleasure of driving a BMW to suit one’s personal needs. The choice of products presented at the 2011 Geneva International Motor Show focuses predominantly on newly developed retrofit components, which contribute towards an even more dynamic driving experience. For example, the components currently included in the BMW Performance product line are now available for the new BMW 1 Series Coupe and the new BMW 1 Series Convertible on show to the general public in Geneva for the first time. For both models the range of Original BMW Accessories also includes sport stripes for the bonnet and the rear, as well as for the roof of the BMW 1 Series Coupe. The decorative element comprising two parallel-running stripes of different width is available in either white or black.

The BMW Performance M3 Exhaust

Maximum performance down to the smallest detail: M Performance components for the BMW M3. The BMW M3’s outstanding dynamics and design can now be selectively and individually optimised using M Performance retrofit components from the

Original BMW Accessory range. The currently offered products comprise attractive and exceptionally high-quality retrofit components for the drive train, suspension, aerodynamics and cockpit.

The M Performance Sports Silencer ensures a highly characteristic enhancement of the BMW M3’s V8 power unit. The extremely temperature- resistant sports silencer, which is 40 percent lighter than the series production version, is made of a chromium-nickel material developed for motor racing, the typical M dual tailpipes being made of titanium. 19-inch M light alloys sporting the Competition design underscore the BMW M3’s dynamic handling potential, the M Performance rear spoiler and M Performance hand-made carbon front apron flaps providing additional downforce. Carbon exterior mirror flaps visually accentuate increased dynamics. Inside the car, the racing-inspired experience is emphasised by aluminium pedals and carbon-look interior trims. Like all products from the Original BMW Accessory range, BMW Performance and M Performance components comply with the stringent BMW Group quality and safety standards. Consequently, they are subject to an equal extent to BMW’s terms of warranty. BMW dealerships, BMW service partners and BMW branches are responsible for the sale and installation of all Original BMW Accessories.

M-Power.com has released new marketing materials which have a few tidbits of information that we find interesting. We’ll give you those specifics but you can get te rest of the info from the source. This is just the first part of a series of technical releases they have in the works. As we have said in the past M really took this car apart and made changes they felt fit.

We had heard a few months back that M had made some changes to the N54 which was greater than just software- we heard tolerances of reciprocating parts had been improved. Looks like our sources were spot on.

“Newly designed piston rings are used in the engine.”

This new information points to a 6 speed manual that is neither from The 135i or the M3 but rather a entirely new gearbox.

“The compact six-speed transmission with dry sump lubrication is a new development and has a weight of just 43 kg – much lighter than similar gearboxes.”

Another surprise to us was that the drive shaft was redesigned, in typical M fashion it appears they over engineered it.

“Because the drive shaft is also a new part, every ing is specifically tailored to the requirements of the BMW Series 1 M Coupé in this combination, starting from the flange of the crank shaft.”

But first BMw has a new four cylinder and it’s destined for the US market. Yes this is the engine that is meant to kill the last naturally aspirated inline six with more power and better efficiency. We break down what it is, when we’ll see it and how it stacks up against the competition.

Then there’s NAIAS 2011. Yes there was a BMW stand outside of the 1M. The new 6er and the 1 Series coupe and convertible were in attendance and looks great. The 6er in particularly was gorgeous in person (if you could get the Chinese automotive engineers away from it).

We then move to Alpina and it’s future in the US. Yes there is a future but it’s hard to do anything more than speculate about B3s, B5s and even D3s on US roads.

This is the second part from the NAIAS 2011. This time you can get a closer look at the world-premieres of the new BMW 1 Series Coupe, the new BMW 1 Series Convertible and the BMW 1 Series M Coupe. (hint if you only care about the 1M skip ahead to around 2:30)

Today BMW announced the 1 Series M Coupe (aka the 1M) will have a base price of 47,010 (including $875 destination fee). While it’s about $1,000 higher than we had anticipated it’s still about $13,000 cheaper than any other M car offered and only $7,085 more expensive than a stock 135i.

BMW NA also announced pricing on several other cars today at detroit. The stunning, all-new 2012 BMW 650i Convertible will start at $91,375 and be available this spring. Finally, the updated and better-equipped 2012 BMW 1 Series models will be priced as-follows: 128i Coupe, $31,825, 135i Coupe, $39,925, 128i Convertible, $37,475, 135i Convertible, $44,675. Official Release: The all-new BMW 1 Series M Coupe, at $47,010, is a car built by BMW’s most enthusiastic engineers for BMW’s most enthusiastic drivers, and signals the youthful, energetic future of BMW M. Essentially a BMW M3 chassis with Competition Package packed into a modified 1 Series body, the 1 Series M Coupe is one of the fastest, most remarkable M vehicles ever built. It features one of the most powerful inline-6 engines BMW has ever built, massive brakes, and a very wide footprint for maximum agility and stability in the spirit of the original BMW M3, which was a race-ready homologation special. The 1 Series M Coupe will be available in limited quantity as a 2011 model.

BMW’s magnificent new 650i Convertible ($91,375) features a lower, wider canvas on which the designers have crafted an elegant shape of pure dynamic presence. Going on sale as a 2012 model, the 650i Convertible features BMW’s 4.4-liter, “reverse flow” V-8 engine with 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. Two transmissions are available including the standard 6-speed manual and BMW’s brilliant optional 8-speed automatic, both suited perfectly to the sport-luxury mission of the 6 Series. As with the previous 6 Series Convertible, the new 650i Convertible features a super insulated folding soft top which can retract in a mere 19 seconds at vehicle speeds up to 25 miles per hour. The interior of the new 650i Convertible features a fresh, ergonomic design with more passenger space, improved ergonomics, and superb materials choices, including optional full-leather trim with contrasting stitching.

Last, but not least, the popular BMW 1 Series Coupe and Convertible models have received substantial enhancements for an early start to the 2012 model year. The 128i model has received BMW’s innovative Air Curtain system, which smoothes airflow over the front wheels to reduce wind resistance. All 1 Series models receive updated headlight and tail light assemblies, featuring a new “eyebrow” design up front and new tail lights at rear. Xenon Adaptive headlights – standard on 135i models, optional on 128i models – add LED backlighting for the new eyebrow and LED light tubes in the tail lights. All 1 Series models now feature standard iPod/USB integration. Convertible models now feature standard through-loading system for improved storage capacity, while 135i models gain standard power seats with adjustable lumbar support. Convertible models receive larger light-alloy wheels, now 17” diameter on 128i Convertible and 18” diameter on the 135i Convertible.

The 2011 BMW 1 Series M Coupe, as well as the 2012 650i Convertible, and 1 Series Coupe and Convertible arrive at authorized BMW centers this Spring.

As we predicted BMW has taken MINI Connected and stamped a BMW logo on it for use in the refreshed 2011 1 Series line-up. And the first real fruits of that have shown up today in the Apple iOS app store.

No surprise given MINI Connected functionality but the BMW app delivers web radio, Facebook and Twitter integration. The app also gives you access to fuel level, range and trip computer functionality (updated each time you plugin). Perhaps just as important the app also allows for the iPod-out functionality co-developed by Apple and BMW. iPod-out puts an automotive grade interface (designed by Apple) on the cars screen for easier navigation. It also supports future features simply by updating the iOS on your device.

The app is only compatible with cars produced from March onward with the 6NR option (which is only available with Navigation and USB connection). But the app is free and available now.

Our sources have indicated that BMW is considering Blackberry and Android versions for later in 2011.

Detroit has had it’s share of troubles over the last few years and the North American International Auto Show has followed along for better or worse. But this year with manufacturers coming back to the show in force (Nissan and Porsche to name two) the 2011 show should a bit more interesting. BMW of course will be there in full-force with the world debuts of the 6 Series Convertible, 1 Series M Coupe and the refreshed 1 Series coupe and convertible models. And like last year BimmerFile will be there to cover it all with photos, interviews and our take on it all.

Official Release: BMW will unveil two stunning signature cars at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. BMW 6 Series Convertible

The new BMW 650i Convertible fulfils the wishes of the most discerning automotive enthusiast as The Ultimate Driving Machine® with groundbreaking luxury and crisp good looks. BMW 1 Series M Coupe

The M badge was awarded to the 1 Series Coupe after BMW M engineers and test drivers achieved the exceptional power delivery and the signature, near-perfect driving behavior of a BMW M car.

Dimensions and Construction

The new 1 Series M Coupe features a high-strength steel unibody, with unique, widened fenders and rear quarter panels to house a substantially widened track. It also features a metal roof panel which saves about 35 lbs compared to BMW 1 Series models equipped with a moonroof. The 2011 BMW 1 Series M Coupe, constructed as one of BMW’s most performance-oriented vehicles in recent years, will not be offered with a moonroof. This weight savings – at the tallest point of the vehicle – provides a corresponding drop in the center of gravity, which contributes to improved driving dynamics. It also helps maximize head room (or helmet room, as the case may be).

Engineering a chassis to be “faster than its engine.”

Providing sure-footed responsive handling for a high-performance, powerful and luxurious coupe, while keeping mass under control, presented numerous challenges for BMW M’s engineers. The result is an aluminum suspension originally conceived for the current-generation M3, and tuned specifically for this model at BMW M’s Nurburgring Nordschleife test center. Of course, every BMW design begins with arranging major components in a way that facilitates near-perfect front/rear weight balance (51.7/48.3).

Engine and Transmission.

The heart of every BMW is the engine, and so an inline-6 with outstanding performance and free-revving behavior propels the BMW 1 Series M Coupe. In the 1 Series M Coupe, the BMW inline-6 engine concept is realized in its most up-to-date form. The twin-turbocharged, all-aluminum, 3.0-liter inline-6 is characterized by instantaneous response to the accelerator pedal, fantastic sounds, and a free-revving spirit. Innovative Aerodynamics: Air Curtains.

Air curtains, used here for the first time in a BMW production vehicle, improve air flow around the wheel arches with the benefit of significantly reduced turbulence.

Updated BMW 1 Series Coupe and Convertible

The unmistakable profile of the 2012 BMW 1 Series, which represent the purest expression of BMW DNA, is now sharper than ever. The new design of the front fascia of both models includes BMW’s innovative Air Curtain that counters turbulence near the wheel arches and so reduces the aerodynamic resistance of the vehicle. New exterior design accents have been incorporated into the headlight and tail light clusters. In the interior, new switches and controls have a more refined look and feel. The updated 1 Series Coupe and Convertible will go on sale this Spring.

Powered by a 3.0-liter, 230 horsepower inline-6 engine that generates 200 lb-ft of torque, the 128i Coupe and Convertible feature BMW’s Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology and aluminum/magnesium construction – core elements of BMW’s EfficientDynamics. The 2012 BMW 135i Coupe and Convertible feature BMW’s newest, 3.0-liter inline-6 engine. BMW 1 Series Coupe.

By combining sporty rear-wheel drive dynamics, agile handling, powerful engines and seating for four, the 2012 1 Series Coupe continues to reinvent the niche that the legendary BMW 2002 created. Powerful engines, the rear-wheel drive typical of the brand and inspirational agility make the BMW 1 Series Coupe stand out from the crowd. It possesses characteristics unique in the compact premium vehicle segment.

With these updates, the BMW 1 Series Coupe develops further as one of the most desirable Ultimate Driving Machines® in the business. Two versions are available: the 128i Coupe and the 135i Coupe. BMW 1 Series Convertible

For drivers whose definition of Joy includes wind in the face and sunshine above, the BMW 1 Series Convertible continues the tradition established by the iconic BMW 2002 sport sedan. The essence of such driving purity – a responsive inline-6 engine perfectly positioned within a rear-drive chassis to provide balanced, sporty dynamics – is at the heart of this compact four-seat convertible. For the 2012 model year, two versions are available with inline-6 power: the 128i and the 135i.

Distinctive BMW Convertible appearance

In a mere 22 seconds—even on the move at speeds up to 25 miles per hour—occupants of the 1 Series Convertible can go from encapsulated comfort to top-down exhilaration. If conditions dictate, the electro-hydraulically-operated softtop can be raised within the same 22 seconds, producing a distinctive silhouette enhanced by long frameless doors. The characteristic features of the BMW kidney-shaped grill, front skirt, door sills and rear skirt are identical to those of the 1 Series Coupe.

The standard softtop is available in either black or taupe cloth, but it is the optional Moonlight Black version which is unique to the 1 Series Convertible. A distinctive feature of the 1 Series Convertible is the flared shoulder line which runs parallel to the road. This shoulder line flows from the hood past the A pillar to the trunk lid, forming a surface which encompasses the entire interior, giving the impression of a boat deck.

The view from the rear is influenced by the position of the softtop: with the top lowered, completely concealed in the tail, the look is flat and elegant; the appearance with the top up is broad shouldered. The trunk lid has an integrated spoiler chiseled into the rear end of the car to accentuate the short rear section. On the 135i, an additional lip spoiler provides greater downforce on the rear end at high speeds.

BMW ConnectedDrive: new interface for the integration of iPhone apps.

The 2012 1 Series Coupe and Convertible will be the first BMW models to offer selected iPhone applications for even greater integration in the vehicle. This interface for the first time allows features such as Facebook, web radio and Twitter to be shown on the vehicle display and accessed using the iDrive Controller. This new as yet unmatched capability enhances the already extensive BMW ConnectedDrive package of features and sees BMW once again underline its leading role in the field of in-car integration technology designed to enhance both convenience and safety.

Like the recently revealed 1M, the 2012 1 Series bears the fruits of a late life-cycle refresh that literally changes the face of the current generation 1 Series. But there’s much more to the 2012 1 Series than different lights. There are exterior and interior color and trim updates and a few surprising technology additions.

The unmistakable profile of the 1 Series Coupe and Convertible, which represents the purest expression of BMW DNA is now sharper than ever. The new design of the front fascia includes BMW’s innovative Air Curtain that counters turbulence near the wheel arches and so reduces the aerodynamic resistance of the vehicle. New exterior design accents have been incorporated into the headlight and tail light clusters. In the interior, new switches and controls have a more refined look and feel. Both cars will go on sale this Spring.

As expected engines will be carried over with the US sticking with the naturally aspirated 3.0-liter, 230 horsepower inline-6 engine that generates 200 lb-ft of torque, in the 128i. As before that engine features BMW’s Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology and aluminum/magnesium construction—core elements of BMW’s EfficientDynamics.

The 2012 BMW 135i features BMW’s newest, 3.0-liter inline-6 engine. Equipped with a single, twin-scroll turbocharger and BMW’s revolutionary Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology, the engine produces 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. Refered to internally as the “N55”, the engine reaches peak torque at 1,200 rpm and maintains peak torque all the way to 5,000 rpm. With High Precision direct gasoline injectors, optimum performance and fuel efficiency are achieved with even faster engine response across the entire engine speed range. For the 135i Coupe, acceleration from 0-60 mph is accomplished with the standard 6-speed manual transmission in 5.1 seconds (5.4 for the convertible).

The 135i can be equipped with BMW’s 7-speed Double Clutch Transmission (DCT), as featured on the BMW Z4 Roadster. Equipped with DCT, the 135i Convertible will accomplish the 0-60 mph sprint in a scorching 5.0 seconds (5.3 for the convertible). A 6-speed Steptronic automatic remains o ptional on the 128i. So equipped, the 128i Convertible runs 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds, or 6.1 seconds with the standard 6-speed manual transmission (7.0 and 6.4 for the open top).

Innovative Aerodynamics: Air Curtains.

Consistency between form and function is crucial to engineers at BMW who seek perfect balance of various aerodynamic factors in the wind tunnel. As a result, the new Air Curtain is BMW’s latest aerodynamic innovation. Introduced first on the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, the Air Curtain will now be a standard feature on the 128i model. What’s interesting here is that BMW didn’t make the investment in the 135i front design to incorporate the Air Curtain but instead focused on the more efficient and volume model. The Air Curtain improves air flow around the front wheel arches with the benefit of significantly reduced turbulence. The 128i Convertible can also be equipped with special Aero Wheels to further enhance the performance of the Air Curtain system.

This innovative feature consists of openings in the outer section of the lower front fascia that route high-pressure air through ducts at each front corner. The ducts are approximately 10 x 3 centimeters wide and are designed to channel air to openings at the front of each wheel arch, where it is discharged through a very narrow opening at high speed. The escaping air stream covers the side of the front wheels like a curtain, thereby reducing aerodynamically unfavorable turbulence around the rotating wheels.

Air Curtain has a key role to play in the development of future aerodynamic innovations. An example of the air curtain principle was first presented in the concept study BMW Vision EfficientDynamics at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in 2009, and the developers of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe took on the pioneering task of applying this element to a production vehicle. To do so, they utilized the unique capabilities of the new full-scale “rolling road” Aerolab wind tunnel at the BMW Group’s new Aerodynamic Testing Center. Now it has been added to the 128i.

A distinctive feature of the 1 Series is the flared shoulder line which runs parallel to the road. This shoulder line flows from the hood past the A pillar to the trunk lid, forming a surface which encompasses the entire interior, giving the impression of a boat deck.

The individual sections within the L-shaped rear taillights give the vehicle a lower, sportier look. Horizontal lights integrated in the rear light clusters offer a homogeneous lighting effect with the help of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This light design, as found on other BMW models, makes the BMW 1 Series stand out at night. Also, the Adaptive Brake Lights operating in two stages in relation to brake application force are yet another feature typical of BMW, with the additional benefit of extra safety on the road.

The 2012 1 Series Coupe combines unique, dynamic and unmistakable design elements with a powerful and muscular body. The greenhouse with its characteristic “Hofmeister kink” is moved rearward and offers a particularly nimble look with its long hood. The short overhangs, long wheelbase and large frameless doors sit on a body with a striking shoulder line for a modern interpretation of BMW’s characteristic look. On the 135i Coupe, an M Aerodynamic Kit is standard.

The standard (on the 135i) Adaptive Xenon Headlights (optional on the 128i), complete with integrated cornering lights, make driving in the dark safer than ever. The daytime running light function, in typical BMW style, uses the four corona rings around each headlight to enhance the visibility of the car under normal and “murky” light conditions.

Luxurious interior appointments with today’s technology

The innovative interior design incorporates high-quality and sophisticated trim elements with luxurious upholstery and color choices. A 60/40 split rear seat is standard. The control console for the entertainment and air conditioning functions is integrated smoothly and harmoniously into the dashboard through its soft radii and flowing surfaces. Added in 2009, a Heated Steering Wheel is included in the optional Cold Weather Package for the 128i Coupe, and is available as a stand-alone option on the 135i Coupe (Cold Weather Package required). BMW’s iDrive controller featured in the optional Navigation system is integrated into the center console, again following BMW’s philosophy of good ergonomic design. Galvanized pearl gloss surfaces adorn the interior door handles, the glove compartment handle, the radio’s rotary knob, the knobs of the automatic air conditioning system, the iDrive Controller, and the ornamental trim strips featured on the sports steering wheel.

Two unique BMW 1 Series Convertible features provide increased driver and passenger comfort, thus improving the overall experience regardless of the top’s position. The optional Boston leather incorporates BMW’s Sun Reflective Technology where pigments worked into the upholstery mitigate the effect of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Excessive heating of the seats and armrest is diminished, especially for darker interior colors. The overall effect can produce surface temperatures some 20 degrees Fahrenheit below a comparable “normal” leather interior.

The standard upholstery is sporty and comfortable Leatherette, which is also the covering on the optional Sport Package’s sport seats with enhanced side support (Boston leather can be selected for this package).

The climate-control system in the 1 Series Convertible has an additional convertible mode (compared to the system in the BMW 1 Series Coupe) designed for open-roof conditions. The three standard modes; gentle, medium and intensive, react primarily to interior sensors, while the convertible mode reacts less to interior temperature and more to the exterior temperature and sunlight factors to establish the intensity of the ventilation.

Convertible roof

Turbulence in the roof-down cabin can be reduced by an available wind deflector which can be affixed to the sides of the vehicle with a few adjustments. The wind deflector allows for conversation at normal sound levels and the ability to enjoy the wide variety of audio and communication offerings which include SIRIUS satellite radio, HD radio, the optional Premium Sound system, and Bluetooth. For simple and straightforward connection of an MP3 player, an auxiliary input jack is standard and a USB port for direct control of an Apple iPod or iPhone media player is available as an option.

The control console for the entertainment and climate-control functions is integrated smoothly and harmoniously into the dashboard through its soft radii and flowing surfaces. With the optional navigation system, the iDrive controller is integrated in the center console, following BMW’s characteristic philosophy of full driver control at all times. Galvanized pearl gloss surfaces adorn the interior door handles, the glove compartment handle, the radio’s rotary knobs, the knobs of the automatic climate control system, the iDrive controller, and the ornamental trim strips featured on the sport steering wheel.

Spacious trunk supplemented by folding seat backs and storage bag
An active couple can carry their gear, regardless of the season, thanks to the generous trunk space offered by the 1 Series Convertible. Two golf bags will fit in the trunk of the 1 Series Convertible – even with the top down! Lowering the soft top produces a storage space that is 8 cubic-feet, which does not include the optional large storage bag that extends into the passenger compartment and can accommodate two snow boards or a golf bag without soiling the upholstery. A zippered opening allows access into the storage bag from within the passenger compartment.

High-tech suspension with Electronic differential

In typical BMW configuration, the BMW 1 Series Coupe transmits power to the rear wheels exclusively. This concept– engine at the front, drive wheels at the rear – guarantees optimum traction, near-perfect weight distribution front-to-rear, excellent directional stability, and predictable handling.

The 1 Series Coupe has a sophisticated suspension system with an aluminum double-pivot front suspension and a five-link fully independent rear suspension in lightweight steel. BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) also includes a Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) function that provides electronic intervention to prevent loss of vehicle control, but at a higher threshold before activation. This allows the driver to experience more spirited driving on dry roads and offers more flexibility when driving in more challenging conditions such as in snow. If the driver desires, both DSC and DTC can be disabled entirely. Optional Active Steering — a variable ratio steering system exclusive to BMW — is available only on the 135i Coupe. In addition to its duties as a safety system, the DSC system on the 135i Coupe is designed specifically to enhance performance-oriented driving.

The rear differential on the 1 Series comes from a new generation of final drives optimized for running smoothness and fuel efficiency. Featuring double-helical ball bearings for the first time, the differential runs at an even lower operating temperature reached more quickly than before thanks to the reduction of fluid required in the differential. Electronic rear brake management is always used to simulate a differential lock for stronger acceleration in turns and low-traction conditions.

The front suspension on the BMW 1 Series is also built to a unique standard in its competitive group. The double-pivot spring and strut front suspension with its anti-roll bar, is made largely of aluminum and offers an optimum combination of stiffness and low weight. The stable track control arms and thrust rods, as well as near-perfect wheel positioning, make an important contribution to the car’s driving dynamics.

M-inspired design for the M Sport Package

Model year 2009 saw the introduction of a new M Sport Package, which is standard on the 135i and optional on the 128i. Features of the M Sport Package include an Aero kit for reduced lift at speed (standard on 135i), an increased top speed limiter, better brake cooling, and enhanced aesthetics while the Sports Suspension offers higher traction and reduced body roll with unique wheels and performance tires. Unfortunately, the M Sport Package deletes the Air Curtain feature.

On the 135i, the Sports Suspension also includes a high-performance brake system incorporating 6-piston fixed calipers on the front and 2-piston calipers at the rear. Additionally, the M Sport Package for both models includes BMW Individual high-gloss Shadowline exterior trim, sport seats, and M branded trim components including driver footrest, gearshift knob (for manual transmission), and door sills. Finally, LeMans Blue Metallic exterior paint is available exclusively when the M Sport Package is ordered.

BMW ConnectedDrive Innovations

Advanced on-board use of mobile phones and music players. Beginning with September production there are enhancements to BMW Assist with Bluetooth and the iPod/USB Adapter. These enhancements extend the functionality through improved integration of mobile devices into the vehicle. These new features are made possible by hardware advances. (All Models)

BMW Assist with Extended Bluetooth

The Bluetooth functionality is extended beyond hands-free and phonebook support with multiple innovations. Feature support is dependent upon compatibility with the mobile device.

RIM Smart Phone Integration

Mobile Office: The industry-first mobile office integration of BlackBerry Smartphones, a customer can access email, text messages, and notes through the iDrive system providing seamless integration with the vehicle. Safety and avoiding driver distraction is paramount at BMW. In order to maintain the driver’s focus on the road, the vehicle’s voice control system (included with navigation) will read messages aloud via text-to-speech. The central screen will also display the only the first three lines of text. The full text can only be displayed when the vehicle is parked. Compatible BlackBerry hardware, firmware, and feature set will be announced later.

vCard photo support: Images of contacts stored in your phonebook are downloaded from the device and shown on the vehicle display. When the mobile phone rings, a picture of the caller will appear on the vehicle display.

External Call Lists: External call list handling downloads the “re-dial” and “received calls list” at every reconnect of the mobile device and after each call.

Bluetooth Music Streaming: Bluetooth music streaming offers wireless audio streaming from the mobile device to the vehicle. Music stored on the mobile phone is played and controlled through the iDrive controller.

iPod/USB Adapter

iPod One-wire integration: The iPod connection no longer requires the “Y-cable” for separate aux-input for sound. The iPod USB cable supplied with the iPod is all that is required to connect the device to the vehicle. The music is transferred directly from the iPod digitally to the sound system via the USB connection.

Album Cover Art: If cover art is contained in the metadata of a particular song, it will show on the vehicle display while the song is played.

Voice Control of Devices: The driver can control external devices and select genre, artist, album, and song title with the voice control system included with Navigation System.

Mobile Phone Device Driver Update: In combination with BMW Assist, the USB port can be used to upload new mobile phone and audio player device drivers. (Release timing for this feature and device driver availability are subject to change.)

BMW Ultimate ServiceTM: Providing owners with incredible value and peace of mind

The BMW 1 Series Convertible will feature BMW Ultimate ServiceTM, a suite of services that includes the BMW Maintenance Program (formerly called Full Maintenance), Roadside Assistance and the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. BMW AssistTM with TeleService is part of the optional Premium Package or can be ordered separately as a stand-along option.

The BMW Maintenance Program is the only no-cost maintenance program in the industry that covers wear and tear items like brake pads and rotors for four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. BMW owners pay nothing for all scheduled inspections, oil changes, brake pads, wiper blade inserts and other wear-and-tear items.

BMW Roadside Assistance is one of the industry’s most comprehensive plans available. Not only is it no-charge for the first four years, but there is no mileage limit. BMW drivers enjoy the assurance of on-the-road help 24 hours a day, seven days a week, anywhere in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. This includes everything from flat tire changes, emergency gasoline and lock-out assistance, to towing, alternative transportation and even trip-interruption benefits. This service also includes valuable trip routing advice.

BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty: All 2012 BMW passenger vehicles are covered by BMW’s excellent Limited Warranty, which includes:

• New-vehicle warranty – four-year/50,000-mile coverage of the vehicle.
• Rust-perforation warranty – 12-year/unlimited-mileage coverage.

Performance with a conscience

BMW strives to produce its motor vehicles and other products with the utmost attention to environmental compatibility and protection. Integrated into the design and development of BMW automobiles are such criteria as resource efficiency and emission control in production; environmentally responsible selection of materials; recyclability during production and within the vehicle; elimination of CFCs and hazardous materials in production; and continuing research into environmentally friendly automotive power sources. Tangible results of these efforts include the recycling of bumper cladding into other vehicle components; water-based paint color coats and powder clear coats; near-future availability of hydrogen-powered models; and various design and engineering elements that help make BMWs easier to dismantle at the end of their service life.

According to Autocar, there will be two new FWD 1-Series variants. The first will be a 5-door hatchback followed by a GT like version. The new FWD 1-Series will have a larger cabin thanks to more upright A-pillars and windshield.

The FWD variants will be built on a modified version of the MINI Countryman platform and are to hit showrooms (in Europe) in September 2013.

Internally known as the UKL (acronym for Unter Klasse), the two FWD models will be accompanied by 4 rear wheel drive 1-Series versions which may be renamed 2 Series (at least in coupe form). RWD versions will include 3 & 5-door hatches along with a coupe and cabriolet.

FWD models will be powered by the much rumored with 1.5 liter, 3-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. Codenamed the N37 and N38, respectively, the engines are halfed versions of BMW’s current 3.0 liter offerings and will feature all of the current Efficient Dynamics tricks as well as some we have yet to see.

What do we have here? Autobilde has managed to snag some undisguised photos of the refreshed 2012 1 Series coupe and convertible. What’s changed? The front lights have been redesigned to both reduce the bug-eyed look of the current car and get closer to current BMW form language. In the back BMW has redesigned the lights to also bring them in line with other new BMWs.

BMW has filed trademark rights for 2 series based names; 228, 230 and 235 so naturally speculation has run rampant across the web. Car & Driver started all this speculation with their belief that the 2 Series would be a rear wheel drive powered coupe and convertible based on the newest 1 Series and we believe they are mostly correct.

BMW has warned us enthusiasts that a future generation 1 Series will be front wheel drive, thanks to the fact that most people in the EU who drive the 3 door and 5 door hatches don’t even realize that currently the rear wheels provide the propulsion. What BMW has not said is when this front wheel drive BMW will make its entry into the market. The current 1 Series is to begin being a replaced within the next year, beginning with the 5 door hatch (not for US consumers) and finally in 2013 with the replacement of the coupes and convertibles. With that being said, front wheel drive may be right around the corner.

The 2 Series rumor actually began back before the current 1 Series hit the US shores, in a period where BMW was said to be moving all coupes, and convertibles to even numbers in an attempt to align those models with the 6 Series. At that time the market research showed the 3 Series had too much cache to break up and the names stayed the same. This latest move is to separate products with different drive characteristics and to alleviate confusion across markets, as in the US we will more than likely (if our usually reliable sources are correct) not see this 1 Series at launch, but will see the 2er from the get-go (if the name sticks).

Where this all becomes confusing is with what happens in the US if/when the 2 Series comes to market- the 1 Series will at that time be vacated. Like the X1 BMW will not offer the front wheel drive models in the US at the world debut, we expect the 2 Series to come first in the US as it is a coupe and rear wheel drive and the 1 Series (hatches and a possible sedan) to be offered in or around 2015 just as CAFE requirements change and BMW strives to move more fuel efficient vehicles. With the launch of the front drive 1 Series BMW will in fact finally be offering an entry level vehicle to the US market, think of it as an answer to the A3 or VW GTI.

Worth noting is that BMW and other large companies often file trademarks that are never used (555 for example) but these filings indicate what they are considering and sometimes paint a broad picture of the future.

Here’s another look at the visually updated 1 Series coming this January, this time courtesy of our friends at Autoblog. While the image above doesn’t show us the new lights as clearly as the previous image of the ActiveE electric car we saw earlier this month (seen below) it does give us the best look yet of the front and rear facia change. What we see here is the stock facia as seen on all models from the 123d to the 128i. The 135i will continue to come standard (in the US) with a M Sport aerokit – albiet slightly modified.

The highly anticipated 1M will feature the front and rear lights seen here along with a bespoke M aerokit and the biggest fender flares seen this side of a 2002 Turbo (seen below in our exclusive rendering).
