It’s a day that many hardcore track and racing junkies have been waiting for. BMW NA is launching official BMW Motorsports parts for the E36 M3, E46 M3, E86 Z4 M Coupe and E92 M3. These parts are the real deal and also really pricey. Don’t expect to be able to drop a couple hundred on a front splitter. We’re talking 10k on full racing suspensions and 20K non-street legal P54B32 engines. That’s right, if you ever wanted a build out that $5,000 Craigslist E36 M3 into the ultimate OEM track car, you’ve got your parts. Just make sure you have some deep pockets.

We’ve obtained a full list of parts available for the E36, E46, E92 M3s as well as the E86 Z4 M Coupe from BMW NA (via bimmerboost) below. We do not have prices yet but we expect those shortly.

+ E36 M3 Group A / PDF

BMW NA has also identified several dealers (now known as Motorsports Centers) that will launch the program later this year:

Laurel BMW
Phone: 877-454-9352
Contact: Kevin Hale

Global Imports

Phone: 770-951-1119 x227
Contact: Jon Allen

BMW of Stratham

Phone: 800-989-5200
Contact: Mark Wilkins

BMW of Cleveland
Phone: 440-542-0600< br>

Contact: Bill Kenney

Now for the fine print via BMW NA:

These BMW Motorsport/racing/off-road Parts Catalog gives you an overview of the specially developed BMW Motorsport parts. Some parts may not be available in the US and may not be approved for all racing series or class. All parts listed are intended for use on approved motorsport/racing/off-road series BMW vehicles ONLY. The parts are Not DOT-approved, homologated or street legal and may adversely affect the original manufacturer’s limited warranty on the vehicle. Installation of motorsport/racing/off-road parts on a vehicle may render it nonstreet legal. Suspension parts (including but not limited to struts, shock absorbers and springs) must be used together as a system and should not be partially installed or combined with any other components from BMW or other manufacturers. Purchasers of motorsport/racing/off-road parts will be required to sign a disclaimer, waiver and release.

So there you have it. We have BMW M Parts, BMW Performance parts and now BMW Motorsports parts. Clearly BMW has grasping the power of the aftermarket.

Above you can see the Official (US) numbers for the recently released 2011 BMW 335is. The “is” is a step up in terms of performance and sporting intentions when compared with the base 335i. The 335is features an uprated 320 horsepower N54 twin turbo inline six cylinder engine.

We have reported regularly here at BimmerFile about the BMW Performance Engine Kit and how with a 6 speed manual transmission it is not given the same level of torque as its slush box counterpart. With the BMW Performance Engine Kit the torque comes in at 317 ft-lbs for the 6MT and 332 for the 6 speed auto, in both instances there is noticeable performance gains and we are all for that!

The factory built 335is negates this difference between the automatic and our preferred manual gear selector. The 335is grants the manual transmission the full 332 ft-lbs and even allows it to take the 370 torques head on when overboost kicks in. From the Performance Engine Kit to the 335is in overboost is a whopping 53 ft-lbs difference, how did they do that?

According to Matthew Russell, a spokesperson for BMW Product/Technology and Motorsport, the 335is is equipped with a modified 335i flywheel. Since this flywheel is not available for cars equipped with the BMW Performance Engine Kit the full torque is not available.

The idea of a 335is just seems to keep getting better for us enthusiasts, a 6 speed with 370 ft-lbs just wanting to be unleashed…. oh the fun that must be!

The New York/New Jersey Vehicle Distribution Center (VDC) is where all vehicles in the north east enter the US. This VDC currently is operated by BMW rather than a third party like some of the others in network. Many things happen to the cars at the VDCs before they ever reach the dealer; they are fascinating places as we learned a few years back on our tour with the BMWCCA.

Our friend Jonathan Spira at The Diesel Driver has been anxiously awaiting the arrival of his beautiful 335d. He was granted access to the VDC like never before (photos permitted) to help document the journey of this latest addition to his garage.

The BMW Vehicle Distribution Center, or VDC (previously called the VPC, or Vehicle Processing Center) is, for all intents and purposes, an extension of the BMW factory in Germany.

The 335d was driven directly to a segregated area at the VDC, where it remained until it was cleared by U.S. Customs inspectors, who physically inspect each car. New cars are cleared through Customs electronically before the ship reaches port. The 335d cleared customs in record time – within 48 hours of arrival. Customs clearance for tourist delivery cars can occasionally take up to two weeks.

For an in-depth look at the steps completed at the VDC with photos and commentary visit The Diesel Driver here.

BMW Performance 335i

Not so long ago we had the privilege of spending some time with Eric Riehle Accessory Development Manager for BMW Performance and Motorsport as well as a fully equipped 335i. The 335i was in sedan form as BMW Performance does not currently offer as extensive a list of parts for the coupe (yet). As most of our readers know, BMW Performance is the official BMW tuning arm. All parts are designed, tested and built to BMW specifications and include a full warranty.

Performance

This car was the first car we have driven with the official BMW Performance Engine Kit installed. The car was equipped with the enthusiasts’ preferred six-speed manual so the rated output is officially 320 hp/ 317 ft-lbs, a bit lower than the automatic version. The car featured the full suspension and the acoustically addicting sport exhaust as well as the remainder of the parts catalog. Our last encounter with this car was prior to the engine tune and it is fair to say that the engine kit makes it sound even better, nice and throaty without that annoying highway drone we all dislike so much.

The kit also provides a noticeable performance improvement as evidenced by our always sensitive butt based dynometer. Fuel economy is reported to be similar to a base 335i (can’t really comment on that as we do not drive like the EPA thinks we should).

The engine provides ample grunt for spirited road driving and will be equally at home on the track for High Performance Driver’s Education days with the BMWCCA or other club, thanks to the additional radiator (located in the driver’s side front wheel well) and increased output fan. The performance is a nice happy medium when compared to an ///M3 and the base 335i; there is more of what enthusiasts prefer in hp and torque without the added abrasiveness or reliability issues that may impact daily driving.

The suspension remains compliant enough for daily driving over the pothole filled roads of the North East while also providing more substantial cornering ability over the stock setup. The suspension seems to push back as hard as you push it, there is still some body roll but it is much decreased compared to a standard factory fresh car. The spring rate is 48% stiffer than the base stock suspension and 34% stiffer than the factory Sport suspension. The spring travel for the front axle is 26 mm and 12mm for the rear, which greatly reduces body roll in combination with the thicker sway bars. The 25 mm drop with this setup also helps alleviate some of the unwanted wheel gap the stock car is known for (10 mm compared to the factory sport suspension). With the runflats there is always going to be some harshness but this suspension does not increase that exponentially so it is a clear win over a coil-over setup. If one was to decide to ditch the runflats and carry an ///M mobility kit in the trunk, the ride would probably be just perfect for most drivers that always check the “sports suspension” box. With spring rates and travel numbers like above one can not expect it to be couch like comfortable taking bumps but at the same time it is not bone jarring, it is just how we like it: tight.

The one thing missing from this car was a big brake kit. Currently there are no plans for BMW Performance to offer a brake kit on the 335 so the only other performance braking option would be from a third party. The stock brakes are the best in class on the street but like all stock brakes they will show their weakness at the track in the form of brake fade. The one caveat is that as part of the Dynamic Stability Control in all recent BMWs is a function to lessen brake fade by increasing the boost pressure- good to give you a chance to cool things down but not a long term fix.

Exterior

After its Life Cycle Impulse (facelift in BMW speak) the 3er sedan gained a more sporty presence which the BMW Performance aero kit and wheels accentuate even more. The Performance front bumper was recently reintroduced to the market thanks to a software update making the removal of the front fog lights not throw one of those irritating error codes. The lower lip is a high gloss carbon fiber that adds down force in addition to looking fantastic. This bumper looks more aggressive/sporty than other factory offerings and with the added carbon fiber it really looks the part as a performance item.

Other exterior parts finished in carbon include the mirror caps and the rear lip spoiler. The mirror caps help change comments about the size and shape of the newer style mirrors from: “nice dumbo ears” to “the carbon mirrors look great!” The rear lip is subtle but effective in terms of looks and reported aerodynamics.

The Style 313 wheels are sporty and sized appropriately at 19X9, our one gripe is that they show off the stock calipers and base discs a bit much (once again a big brake kit would be nice!). This open design with thin diameter spokes is not by chance, it is to aid in cooling those stock brakes and pads. These Perfromance wheels are built of low pressure cast and machined aluminum helping keep the weight down to forged levels, 25 lbs. for the 19″s and a pound less for the inch smaller offering. They are one of our current wheel favorites and will soon grace the 335is.

The not so “pin” stripes flanking both sides of the car set it off from other run-of-the mill E90s. These have definitely grown on us since they were first introduced. Obviously, they are not to everyone’s liking but they sure beat some long named rear trunk badge… so on that note they are a must have for anyone that has outfitted their car appropriately, but the best part is that you do not need to earn “points” to get your stripes!

Interior

The interior is much the same as the BMW Performance 135i we reviewed last year. Nicely laid carbon fiber trim pieces replace the stock wood or aluminum, while Alcantara® adorns the steering wheel and shifter. Stainless pedals round out the interior modifications as in the US we are not worthy of the marvelous seats that EU countries have available because of DOT regulations. We loved the gadget-laden steering wheel our car was equipped with but the real news is its stable mate. This new wheel (pictured) has a flat bottom, and a yellow stripe at the top. It is similar in feel to the high-end wheel with all the high tech electronics (great for track days) just in a more basic form.

The short throw shifter decreases the throw by approximately 25% while improving the feel and engagement of the shifts, it still feels better than the current generation ///M3. The aluminum and Alcantara® knob is smaller than some would like but also fits nicely in the hand and provides added friction for days when driving gloves are required. The interior is both sporty and completely functional, it is not just all eye candy which in our book is the way it should be.

Conclusion

We enthusiasts are always in the market for quality tuning products that help make our cars our own. BMW Performance does just that. With the recent pricing decreases and a standard warranty these parts seem like a no brainer to anyone looking to tune their car. Would we fully equip a car similarly or opt to get a recently launched 2011 335is and add the BMW performance suspension and a few other pieces? That’s the real question and one we leave for another day…

For another view on the 335is, we turn to our friends at Kilometer who had a chance to sample the 335is at the same track in Portugal last week. Here’s a quick excerpt:

Purists will likely want the six-speed manual transmission that comes standard, but new seven-speed DCT gearbox will actually get you up to speed more quickly. There’s simply no beating a pre-selected gear and computer-controlled clutch for shifting speed and accuracy. I was able to pull an honest 0-to-60 time of 5.0 seconds on the cool, damp surface of Estoril’s front straight (measured with a vBox performance meter), and that was without the gearbox’s launch control program (which was deactivated in our pre-production cars). On top of being faster, the DCT engages quite smoothly; even lugging around at low speeds it never exhibited the jerkiness that other cars with dual-clutch transmissions often do.

At the other end of the car, the 335is get a bespoke exhaust system with a pair of black tips peaking through the rear valence. BMW insists the setup is unique to the is, though it appears to be a piece from their performance catalog. Either way, it delivers a hearty burble at idle that may be reason enough for some buyers to make the leap, and under acceleration generates a sporty (but not obnoxious) rasp.

While at the new F10 5 Series launch in Portugal, BMW rolled out the 335is (a US specific model) for a few hot laps in an effort to get some press around the car. While we didn’t make the trek over there, our good friends at Autoblog had some time behind the wheel and have an initial review as result. It’s worth a read to get a sneak but also yet another view of the question many of us have been asking. With the M3 starting at only 8k more, the 335is really worth it?

Here’s an excerpt:

Think of it this way: a 2010 M3 coupe starts at $58,400, to which you must add $875 for destination and a further $1,300 for gas guzzler taxes (a 2011 model has not yet been announced). Total cost? $60,575 – before options. Yes, the V8-powered M3 offers significantly more horsepower (414), but does so at a skyscraping 8,300 rpm and has a comparative dearth of torque – 295 vs. 332 pound-feet – and that’s without considering the 335i’s massive overboost. What’s more, the 335is’ full measure of twist is available from just 1,500 revs, while the M3’s eight-pot needs to be spinning more than twice as fast at 3,900 rpm. Lest we forget, despite its carbon-fiber roof, it also weighs a smidge more.

Don’t get us wrong – we love every inch of the M3’s sniper-like precision – it remains a fantastic car and an unrivaled piece of trackday artillery. But out on the street, you really do have to rev the Mobil 1 out of the V8 in order for it to feel genuinely quick. That’s not to say that doing so is a chore, but for many drivers, the high-revving soundtrack can get tiresome on a day-in, day-out basis and the M3’s care and feeding aren’t exactly cheap. The 335is offers club racer competence swathed in a more relaxed, more civilized package with comparable levels of real-world thrust – all while leaving a couple of vacations’ worth of coin in your bank account.

Look for a full BimmerFile review of the 335is this spring.

As you may have picked up from our recently posts, BMW is being very aggressive with changing to relatively new models across the range this spring. So aggressive in fact that they’ve decided to begin 2011 model year starting with Spring production of most models. Some highlights:

The M3 Competition Package is real and includes 10 mm lower suspension, 19” M3 GTS wheels, remapped Electronic Damping Control and Dynamic Stability Control systems.

X5 now comes with the N55 single turbo inline six

BMW has introduced value packages to the aging 1 and 3 series models

Most models equipped with the twin turbo N54 inline six will be transitioning to the N55 single turbo for 2011.

Most vehicles receive minor changes for MY2011 in the form of options and new or revised packages, but some models are either all-new (for example, the new BMW 5 Series sedan and BMW ALPINA B7) or substantially updated (3 Series Coupe and Convertible). For existing models, what will not change for the start of the MY2011 are base Manufacturer Suggested Retail Prices. You can get all the details for the entire range in the official release below:

BMW NA to Extend “Value Packages” for 1 and 3 Series Models

Official Release: In 2009, BMW introduced a “Value Package” – a $0.00 (No Charge) option that included leather upholstery and the integrated iPod adapter on the 5 Series and 328i/xi Sedans. As expected, the Value Package proved to be very popular, and as such, the concept is being extended to additional models. The $0.00 Value Package again includes leather upholstery and the iPod adapter as its key components but may also include several additional options, depending on the model.

BMW NA Creates New “Convenience Package” Available for 1 and 3 Series

Throughout 2009 BMW spent time talking to Dealers and Client Advisors about possible ways to improve our option offering and the value of our package structure. Based on this feedback from Dealers and Client Advisors on, BMW has developed “Convenience Package” for the 1 and 3 Series for MY 2011. This package brings considerable value to a number of options that share the theme of Convenience and are typically ordered together anyway. The Convenience Package content varies depending on the model but always includes the Alarm System, Comfort Access (keyless entry) and Park Distance Control. It retails for as low as $1,000 on the 135i Coupe and Convertible.

Beginning with MY2011 production, most models currently utilizing the twin turbo inline 6 cylinder N54 engine will switch to the new single twin-scroll inline 6 cylinder N55 engine. The new engine shares the same aluminum block as the previous engine but now uses a new cylinder head with BMW VALVETRONIC combined with a single twin scroll type turbo to deliver faster response and more efficiency. The performance figures remain the same at 300hp and 300 lb-ft torque but the efficiency improves by an impressive 7%. The new engine will be installed in the 135i Coupe and Convertible, the 335i Sedan, Coupe and Convertible, the new 535i Sedan when it arrives later this year, the 535i Gran Turismo arriving this spring and finally, the X6 xDrive35i.

The 300hp version of the twin-turbo N54 engine will continue to be offered in the Z4 sDrive35i and upgraded versions of the N54 will power the 740i/Li, Z4 sDrive35is, and the 335is Coupe/Convertible.

1 Series Coupe/Convertible

The 2011 BMW 1 Series Coupe goes on sale this April with several improvements. In addition to the Value and Convenience Packages described above, the Cold Weather Package has been enhanced with a heated steering wheel and the retail price has been increased $150 from $600 to $750. A Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces the HiFi System Professional with no change in retail price ($875). In line with the very sporty nature of the 135i Coupe/Convertible, the 7-speed Double Clutch Transmission (DCT) replaces the STEPTRONIC automatic transmission with an option price of $1,575. The STEPTRONIC 6 speed automatic transmission will continue to be available on the 128i Coupe/Convertible for a retail price of $1,375.
Base MSRP (including $875 Destination & Handling) for all the 1 Series models remain unchanged for MY2011. The 128i Coupe and 135i Coupe start at $30,025 and $36,925, respectively. The 128i Convertible and 135i Convertible start at $35,075 and $41,225, respectively.

3 Series Sedan

The 2011 BMW 3 Series Sedan goes on sale this spring, and each model features changes worthy of mention. Headlining the news is BMW’s all-new 300hp inline-6 engine for the 335i Sedan. BMW’s enthusiast-celebrated 6-speed manual transmission remains standard, and the 6-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission remains optional for $1,375. New shift paddles (left-shift down, right-shift up) for the STEPTRONIC may be added to the Sport steering wheel for $100 when the $2,150 Sport Package is ordered.
For the first time since its introduction, the BMW 335d Sedan is now available with the

M Sport Package for $3,750. On all 3 Series models, the optional Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces BMW’s HiFi Professional System.

The 328i Sedan and 335i Sedan start at $34,025 and $41,475, respectively, including $875 Destination & Handling. The 328i xDrive Sedan and 335i xDrive Sedan start at $36,025 and $43,475, respectively, including Destination & Handling. The 335d Sedan featuring BMW Advanced Diesel technology with BluePerformance starts at $44,825, including the 6-speed automatic transmission and Destination & Handling.

3 Series Sports Wagon

The 2011 3 Series Sports Wagon goes on sale this spring with an MSRP of $36,575 for the 328i Sports Wagon, and $38,575 for the 328i xDrive (all-wheel drive) Sports Wagon. New for MY2011 is the $2,350 Convenience Package, which includes Alarm System, Comfort Access, ultrasonic Park Distance Control, and BMW’s Xenon adaptive headlights. On all
3 Series models, the optional Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces BMW’s HiFi Professional System. Also for 2011, Vermillion Red exterior paint replaces Barbera Red, and Deep Sea Blue replaces Monaco Blue metallic exterior paint.

3 Series Coupe

BMW has substantially updated the 3 Series Coupe for model year 2011. Headlining the changes are new headlights and tail lights, a new hood and kidney grille, new side skirts, new wheels, and new front and rear fascias. Under the skin, the 335i Coupe has been fitted with the new “N55” twin scroll turbocharged inline-6 engine, and may be coupled to the standard 6-speed manual or optional 6-speed automatic transmission. In addition to the new Vermillion Red and Deep Sea Blue exterior colors, Mineral White Metallic exterior paint will be available on the Coupe starting in June. On all 3 Series models, the optional Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces BMW’s HiFi Professional System. Also, as part of the update, BMW has made new Bamboo Anthracite Wood trim available on the interior.

Perhaps the biggest news for enthusiast coupe drivers is the arrival of the BMW 335is Coupe. This high-performance model features BMW’s award-winning twin-turbocharged inline-6 (N54), with output of 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. A special overboost function permits a temporary torque increase to 370 lb-ft. Cooling the extra heat generated by the increased power is a standard oil cooler and an extra water cooler (radiator), as well as the enormous front air ducts included with the standard M Sport upgrades. An emotionally charged sport exhaust system has been fitted to perfectly capture the serious driving intentions of the 335is. Black kidney grilles, mirror caps, and Shadowline exterior trim lead the eyes to the rear where a rear diffuser with a body-color and black insert is located. Inside, the 335is Coupe receives a full M Sport enhancement with unique trim and badges. Those enthusiasts who prefer not to have it will appreciate the ability to delete the standard glass moonroof. For the first time on the 3 Series (excluding M3) the Double Clutch Transmission (DCT) will be available on the 335is as a $1,575 option.
The 328i Coupe and 335i Coupe start at $37,075 and $43,525, respectively, including $875 Destination & Handling. The all-wheel drive models 328i xDrive Coupe and 335i xDrive Coupe start at $38,975 and $45,425 respectively. The high-performance 335is Coupe will go on sale in June at an MSRP of $50,525.

3 Series Convertible

Like the 3 Series Coupe, BMW has substantially updated the 3 Series Convertible for model year 2011. Headlining the changes are new headlights and tail lights, a new hood and kidney grille, new side skirts, new wheels, and new front and rear fascias. Under the skin, the 335i Convertible has been fitted with the new “N55” twin-scroll turbocharged inline-6 engine, and may be coupled to the standard 6-speed manual or optional 6-speed automatic transmission. In addition to the new Vermillion Red and Deep Sea Blue exterior colors, Mineral White Metallic exterior paint will be available on the Convertible starting in June. On all 3 Series models, the optional Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces BMW’s HiFi Professional System. Also, as part of the update, BMW has made new Bamboo Anthracite Wood trim available on the interior.

Convertible drivers with a love for dynamic performance will be excited to learn of the new BMW 335is Convertible. This high-performance model features BMW’s award-winning twin-turbocharged inline-6 (N54), with output of 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. A special overboost function permits a temporary torque increase to 370 lb-ft.

Special high-performance models exclusively for North American marketplace.

Confirming what may have been this year’s worst-kept auto industry secret, BMW announces the introduction of the BMW 335is Coupe and Convertible, each destined to take a place in history among the line of desirable, often collectible, BMW “s” models. Based on the newly-enhanced BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible, the new BMW 335is features the award-winning, twin-turbocharged BMW inline-6 engine, specially tuned and equipped to produce 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque from its 3.0-liters. For the first time on a BMW 3 Series in the US, the 7-speed Double Clutch Transmission (DCT) with Launch Control will be available as an option, in place of the standard 6-speed manual transmission. Equipped with the DCT, the 335is Coupe is capable of 0-60mph acceleration in 5 seconds flat. The BMW 335is will debut at the New York International Auto Show and arrive at BMW Centers later in the spring. Pricing will begin at $50,525 including Destination for the 335is Coupe, and $59,075 including Destination for the Convertible.

Fundamentally unchanged are the BMW 3 Series’ essential attributes of rear-wheel drive, near-perfect 50-50 weight distribution, remarkably precise steering, and skillfully engineered suspension…all of which conspire to produce the uniquely satisfying driving experience that is quintessentially BMW.

The “s” was first seen by North Americans on the original BMW 3 Series, which was imported from 1977-1983. The 1980 BMW 320is included the most desirable 3 Series equipment, including Recaro sport seats, sport steering wheel, halogen high-beams, sunroof, dual color-keyed wing mirrors, anti-sway bars, exterior aerodynamic enhancements, and cross-spoke light-alloy wheels. Later in the1980s, the BMW 3 Series and 5 Series were each available as “s” models, including the BMW 325es, 325is, and 535is. Again, sticking with a proven formula, BMW gave the “s” models enhanced aerodynamics, sport suspension, on-board computer (OBC) and Check Control, sport leather seats, and other features. Early last decade, the original BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) was available twice as an “s” model, first as the BMW X5 4.6is and then as the BMW X5 4.8is. The “s” model SAVs brought even further enhancement in the form of increased power from their modified V-8 engines.

As the newest “s” model, therefore, the 2011 BMW 335is follows its lineage by offering stunning looks, more power, and a raft of functional, performance-inspired equipment tailored to suit the enthusiast driver.

More Power.

The BMW 335is is powered by BMW’s widely-acclaimed “N54” twin-turbocharged inline-6, which displaces 3.0-liters and features all-aluminum construction. The engine further benefits from BMW’s High Precision direct fuel injection, Double-VANOS stepless valve timing, and advanced Digital Motor Electronics (DME) engine control system. For the 335is Coupe and Convertible, the engine has a heavy-duty cooling system and has received special software that allows the N54 to sustain a nominal output of 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. Through the use of temporary overboost in certain circumstances, the engine will produce up to 370 lb-ft of torque (horsepower remains 320) for even better performance during overtaking and other high-load / high-speed maneuvers.

The increased power and torque naturally place higher loads on the engine componentry, so a number of items, including the cooling system of the 335is, have been upgraded accordingly. An additional radiator has been added behind the left-side front air intake, along with a more powerful electric cooling fan. An oil cooler is fitted opposite the second radiator, on the right side. The front fascia of each model has been shaped with large openings to allow improved air flow to the coolers, and special emphasis was placed on the 335is Coupe’s higher probability of being used for spirited driving. As a result, the 335is Coupe has traded the Convertible’s foglights for the largest possible air openings, which help result in a substantial increase in effective cooling capacity over the original BMW 335i Coupe. These measures were taken specifically to ensure that the 335is will provide constant, reliable power under even the harshest driving circumstances. Engine mounts have also been replaced with stiffer units to help minimize deflection under very high G-loads.

Performance and Specifications.
Top speed of the BMW 335is will be electronically limited to 150 mph. The 335is Coupe performs 0-60 mph runs in 5.0 seconds with the optional 7-speed DCT and 5.1 seconds with the manual 6-speed. The 335is Convertible, meanwhile, requires only 5.2 seconds for the 0-60 run whether equipped with the 6-speed manual or optional 7-speed DCT. Maximum rated horsepower of 320 is achieved at 5900 rpm, and nominal peak torque output of 332 lb-ft is achieved from 1500 – 5000 rpm. Temporary peak torque of 370 lb-ft is available under special high-load circumstances, such as when overtaking at higher speeds. The drag coefficient (Cd) is 0.30 for the 335is Coupe and 0.31 for the 335is Convertible. EPA fuel efficiency estimates will be available closer to the on-sale date for each model and are expected to closely follow the figures of the standard 335i Coupe and Convertible, respectively. The vented brake rotors are the same sizes as on the standard 335i Coupe and Convertible, measuring 13.7” front and 13.2” rear.

Sensational Sounds.
Appropriately, the BMW 335is Coupe and Convertible have been fitted with a new sport exhaust system to enhance the sound and responsiveness of each model. Without being intrusive, the emotionally-charged character of the free flowing exhaust system has been specially tuned to focus on the low frequency “rumble” sounds that are most enjoyed with the windows (or the Convertible’s retractable hard top) lowered. The system is designed to minimize the restriction of exhaust gas flow, which is always important for a turbocharged powerplant.

Unique Exterior and Interior Design Features.
The new BMW 335is models are based on the latest BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible, which have themselves each been enhanced for the 2011 model year. Of those updates, the 335is models retain the new high-depth LED tail lights, new xenon adaptive headlights with LED-lighted corona rings, and the new hood which integrates with a freshened BMW kidney grille. Above and beyond those updates, the 335is will receive new M Sport enhancements which include comprehensive M aerodynamic elements, kidney grille surrounds in high gloss black, Shadowline black window trim, wing mirror caps in high gloss black, and standard 18” light alloy wheels in ferric grey color. 19” light alloy M wheels are optional. Exclusive “335is” badges adorn each front fender and the rear of the trunklid.

The M Sport front and rear fascias and side skirts have been carefully sculpted to provide the best air management benefits along with a healthy dose of style. Starting at the front, the new air dam of the 335is Coupe is equipped with large openings meant to feed as much air as possible to the upgraded cooling system. Horizontal black planes are placed within each opening to properly guide the air into the ducts. On the 335is Convertible, front foglights are retained in place of the black horizontal guide planes. As with any M Sport aerodynamic component, the air dam works to reduce or negate lift at high speeds.

At rear, the form-follows-function design philosophy continues with a new rear diffuser intended to properly manage the high-velocity air flow exiting from underneath the vehicle. As the most aggressive ever fitted to a BMW 3 Series, the body-color rear diffuser features a black inset portion with vertical strakes that help maintain air velocity, reduce pressure, and therefore help prevent “lift” over the rear axle.

Inside, the M Sport upgrades continue with an M Sport steering wheel, sport seats, anthracite headliner, M door sills, M driver’s footrest, M gearshift knob, and high-quality stainless steel sport pedals. The instrument cluster features dials in dark grey with a “335is” badge on the tachometer face. The passenger side dashboard also features an exclusive “335is” badge on the standard aluminum glacier silver dark trim.

Today, BMW Officially announced the updates of the 3 Series Coupe and Convertible. As many have speculated (including us) the facelift (or Life Cycle Impulse in BMW terminology) has been a minor one in terms of the number of physical changes but those changes update the looks a good deal. The new headlights, featuring LED technology in the corona rings include eyebrows (reminiscent of the exiting E60), in addition to the new wider kidney grills scream BMW making these cars unmistakable as Bavaria’s finest through and through. Updated rear lights along with new front and rear fascias conclude the most obvious cosmetic changes.

The major change for the 335i is more than skin deep and wouldn’t go noticed unless you inspect under the hood. Propelling the new 2011 E92/93 3 Series models is the latest generation 300 hp/ 300 lb-ft BMW turbo charged inline six. Unlike its twin-turbo predecessor the new engine features only a single turbo. It utilizes dual scroll technology combined with BMWs Valvetronic system to provide improved response and to bring on the torque a full half of a second quicker all while improving emissions and fuel economy.

For 2011, 328 and 335 models will continue to see the enthusiast’s preferred 6-speed manual transmission as standard (3 pedals included at no additional charge) or each model will have an optional 6 speed automatic transmission available. New to 2011 vehicles equipped with an automatic and the optional “paddle shifters” is the concept of one paddle to downshift and one to upshift, as has been featured on ///M models.

New trim material options and color choices are available for 2011. This rounds-out some of the most noticeable changes to BMWs best selling two-door models.

For all of the changes and the full break down please continue on for the Official Press Release.

Official Release: BMW has announced substantial enhancements to the 2011 3 Series Coupe and Convertible, including outstanding style updates for 328i and 335i models and a new engine for 335i models. The 2011 3 Series Coupe and Convertible models will go on sale in Spring 2010, and pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

Fundamentally unchanged are each car’s essential attributes of rear-wheel drive (xDrive is available on the Coupe), near-perfect 50-50 weight distribution, remarkably precise steering, and skillfully engineered suspension…all of which conspire to produce the uniquely satisfying driving experience that is quintessentially BMW.

All-new is the engine for the 335i model. Internally designated the “N55,” this turbocharged, all-aluminum engine features essentially the same “short block” and 3.0-liter displacement of its predecessor, but benefits from five additional years worth of development and refinement. The result is an engine that is more responsive, more fuel efficient, and cleaner-running than its outstanding predecessor, but preserves the previous engine’s output and soul: 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, and a 7,000 rpm redline. The 6-speed manual gearbox – beloved by North American enthusiast drivers – remains standard, and the well-known 6-speed Steptronic automatic is optional, now featuring “pull-style” shift paddles on the multifunction steering wheel.

Design. Reflecting the legendary distinction of BMW Coupes and Convertibles

The profile of the BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible is instantly recognizable at first glance. Beyond the basic shape of the car and its classic lines, the new design of the headlights, the enhanced depth and detail of the taillights, the interior, and even the exterior mirrors were specifically created for the Coupe and Convertible. These unique design elements reflect the sporty character of the car. The driver who chooses a two-door vehicle desires a car with dynamic looks as well as driving performance. With this in mind, BMW engineers and designers set out to create a unique, unmistakable blend of design features and most importantly, driving pleasure.

It all begins with proportions. The new, long hood powerfully symbolizes BMW’s loyalty to the inherently balanced inline-6 engine. The long wheelbase, short overhangs, the passenger compartment set aft and the low, sleek roofline which seamlessly slopes into the trunk are all characteristics of the BMW Coupe and BMW retractable hardtop Convertible.

In addition to the classic proportions, three design lines-the shoulder, character and lower sill lines- enhance the sleek appearance. Both the shoulder line and character line stretch uninterrupted to the back of the car, allowing one’s eye to move quickly and smoothly from front to rear along the entire length of the car. The sill line of the lower edge of the door flows into the front and rear air dams, reinforcing the dynamic nature of BMW’s newest 3 Series Coupe and Convertible.

The combination of lines flowing into one another elegantly emphasizes the vehicles’ performance potential. While the shoulder line rises slightly but consistently from front to rear, the character line flows in a long, stretched arch all the way from the front fender to the new taillights. As the sill line, by contrast, moves up slightly to the rear in a slow and gentle curve, the distance between the character and sill lines becomes smaller near the rear wheel arches. The fender flare around each rear wheel also serves to give the character line extra tension in both an upward and outward direction.

Attractive new innovations at the front, side, and rear – integrated precisely into the overall look of the car- give greater emphasis to the sportiness of both models. At the same time, these modifications slightly extend the overhangs front and rear (now 1.14″ and 0.12″ longer, respectively), which adds a sleeker and even more athletic appearance.

The new, widened kidney grille, a signature feature of every BMW, suits the broad new hood and stands out from the surfaces around it. Interaction with the three-dimensional kidney frame creates a look of power and unique style. The frame around the kidney grille now features a chrome band precisely twisted within itself.

The 3 Series Coupe and Convertible come standard in the U.S. with Xenon Adaptive Headlights, accented by BMW’s signature corona light rings. At the top, the new headlights merge into a trim bar cutting off the light beam to create that concentrated, focused look typical of a genuine BMW. The corona rings, now powered by super-bright LED light sources, can serve as daytime running lights (if that feature is activated), and also as evening city lights, making the Coupe and Convertible instantly recognizable as a BMW, day or night. The upper edge of each headlight fixture is also illuminated by an LED light source.

The new design of the taillights is unique to the 3 Series Coupe and Convertible. The rear light cluster feature two-piece L-shapes and are further accentuated by a new color scheme. With two rows of light tubes that illuminate simultaneously, they create a night design with depth and dimension. Integrated flush into the body of the car, the lights are split into two sections and extend up the trunk lid, blending with the character lines from the side profile. Horizontal LED tube taillights give the car an unmistakable look at night. The horizontal flowing lines accentuate the wide track and low stance of the Coupe and Convertible.

An additional horizontal contour line has been added to the rear air dam to further accentuate the width of the Coupe and Convertible. It creates light-and-shade effects to give the entire rear end a flatter and smoother appearance.

The exterior mirrors also receive a new design, adding further innovation to the unique looks of the BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible. They blend harmoniously into the side view and silhouette of each new model.

Deep Sea Blue Metallic, Vermillion Red Metallic, and Mineral White Metallic exterior colors will each become available for the new 3 Series Coupe and Convertible this spring.

Interior: a truly stylish ambiance

The emphasis on individual style, dynamic performance and exclusivity continues within the interior. Here again, the focus is on the driving experience, as announced by the standard leather multifunction steering wheel. Horizontal lines dominate the surfaces on and around the instrument panel which blend with the lines of the center console door panels to give the interior a light but dynamic feel. In true BMW fashion, all operational and informational elements essential to driving are grouped on and around the steering wheel. Climate controls, as well as those for the audio and navigation systems, are within easy reach of the front passenger.

Because the Coupe and Convertible are four-passenger cars, the rear seat passengers are treated to a center console between their individual rear seats which includes individual storage boxes, additional air outlet vents, and footwell lights.

The BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible come standard with Dark Burl Walnut wood trim. As a choice, Bamboo Anthracite wood, Light Burl Walnut wood, and Aluminum trim are optional. Like the standard Dark Burl Walnut, these materials appear on the dash, front and rear consoles, doors and rear side panels.

The standard leatherette upholstery is available in Black and Creme Beige. For the optional leather upholstery, luxurious Dakota leather can be chosen. Here too, the buyer may choose Creme Beige, Oyster, Coral Red, Saddle Brown, Gray, or Black. Upholstery leather appears on the seat facings, door inserts and door handle surrounds; other leather-trimmed items include the gear shift boot, handbrake grip and steering wheel.

In other items of trim that don’t change with upholstery or trim options, the interior door handles, gearshift surround trim, steering wheel spokes, instrument dial and engine Start/Stop button surrounds, dash air-outlet adjusting tabs and the optional iDrive controller are in pearl-gray galvanic material.

An elegant ambiance is further created in the interior by special lighting and switches with a premium look and feel. Ambiance lighting, streaming down from under the ledge on the door and side panels, and running from the A pillar all the way to the rear passenger area, creates a particularly warm, indirect lighting effect.

Through its design and configuration, the cabin emphasizes the sporting and driver-oriented character of the 3 Series Coupe and Convertible. Taking a seat behind the steering wheel, the driver’s eyes will immediately focus on the instrument cluster.

All-new turbocharged engine with Valvetronic for 335i

BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible customers have a choice of two inline-6 engines that are the worlds’ finest. The 328i features 230 horsepower while the 335i has 300 horsepower and is the first inline-6 equipped with a single twin-scroll turbocharger, BMW’s Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology, High Precision direct fuel injection, and all-aluminum construction.

The 335i’s new inline-6 engine displaces 3.0-liters and develops maximum output of 300 hp at 5,800 rpm, with peak torque of 300 lb-ft available all the way from 1,200-5,000 rpm. Redline is 7,000 rpm. This is the same level of performance as the previous 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-6 but with the innovation of twin-scroll technology and the integration of Valvetronic, this new engine is even more fuel efficient.

Historically, BMW engineers were never satisfied with the most often-cited downside to turbocharging: the frustrating “turbo lag” that occurs between the time at which driver presses the accelerator pedal and when the turbocharger develops sufficient rotation to increase power. Turbo lag is usually worse at low engine speeds. Other drawbacks included relatively high fuel consumption and poor emissions output. At the time, turbocharger technology was not a reliable, practical or efficient was to make power. For these and other reasons, BMW put turbocharged gasoline engines on the shelf for more than 20 years.

Two recent developments caused BMW to reconsider turbocharging. While many luxury-performance carmakers began to achieve power gains by building engines of ever-increasing displacement, BMW looked for a more efficient way; smaller engines and turbocharging made sense. Also, the technology transfer from BMW’s turbocharged diesel engines could easily be transferred to their gasoline-fired counterparts. Accordingly, BMW articulated its new approach to developing high-performance engines as part of its EfficientDynamics initiative.

The new N55 is the first BMW inline-6 to combine turbocharging, High Precision direct fuel injection, and Valvetronic variable intake technology. It features a single, mid-sized turbocharger with a “twin-scroll” housing to boost performance and minimize the response lag. Thanks to its housing design which maintains proper separation between streams of exhaust gasses, the turbocharger builds up pressure much faster than previous-generation turbochargers, thus eliminating even the slightest tendency for lag.

A further advantage of turbocharging is that this is the most weight-efficient method to boost engine power and performance. The N55 turbocharged inline-6 weighs approximately 150 lbs. less than an equally powerful eight-cylinder engine displacing 4.0 liters. This lower weight means a significant advantage not only in fuel economy, but also in balancing the car’s weight distribution.

Using Valvetronic for the first time on a turbocharged inline-6 allows the engine to “inhale” air for combustion with virtually no delay and with reduced pumping losses. As a result, the engine makes power more quickly than ever before, and this is proven by the N55’s ability to reach peak torque at 1200rpm, 200rpm earlier than its predecessor.

As a result, the technology in the BMW 335i Coupe and Convertible represents a significant achievement in terms of both performance and fuel efficiency. The advantages over a conventional turbocharged engine are not only clearly measurable, but easy to feel on the road.

Turbocharging typically includes intercooling of the engine’s induction air, that is, cooling the compressed air that emerges, very much heated up by the compression process, from the turbocharger(s). Sometimes it’s done with coolant; in the case of the N55 engine, it’s accomplished with outside air. Intercooling is necessary to reduce the temperature of the incoming air to preclude detonation or “knocking” that can reduce power or, in the extreme, damage the engine. Of course, the N55, like all other current BMW engines, is equipped with knock control as part of the Digital Motor Electronics (DME) engine management system. On the N55 engine, the DME is now mounted directly to the top of the engine for better packaging and weight savings.

The significant loads and cylinder pressures of the N55 300-hp engine required the use of an aluminum engine structure with cast-iron cylinder sleeves. Altogether, the N55 weighs about 427 lbs. The 335i Coupe and Convertible dual exhaust system runs at both sides of the vehicle. At low loads, a flap channels most gas through one side to reduce low-frequency exhaust “rumble.” The 335i Coupe and Convertible feature an air-to-oil external oil cooler mounted in one wheel well as opposed to the N52’s coolant-to-oil unit.

The peak power of 300 hp at 5800rpm has already been mentioned; this is fully 70 hp up on the 2011 328i models. At least as important is the fact that this engine can deliver its peak torque from 1200 rpm – not far above idling – to 5000 rpm. On the road, this power and torque result in outstanding performance. The 335i Coupe and Convertible can accelerate from 0 – 60 mph in just 5.3 (5.5) seconds and 5.5 (5.7) seconds, respectively, when equipped with the manual (automatic) transmission. The sense of urgency continues all the way to the electronically limited top speed of 130 mph (150 mph when equipped with the optional Sport Package). The 335i xDrive coupe accelerates 0-60 mph in 5.2 (5.3) seconds when equipped with the manual (automatic) transmission.

Finally, the new N55 engine is able to achieve a more favorable emissions signature than its predecessor. The single turbocharger has only one exhaust path and feeds a single catalytic converter in place of the previous engine’s two. This means the exhaust gases are concentrated at the catalytic converter for better cold-start emissions performance, making the N55 a more environmentally friendly engine.

The 328i Convertible is powered by BMW’s 230 horsepower, 200 lb-ft, 3.0-liter inline-6 engine, known internally as the N52. Its magnesium/aluminum construction and Valvetronic variable valve lift are features found only on BMW engines. The N52 achieves impressive progress on all performance and technology fronts, especially in its remarkably light weight of 357 lbs. An aluminum/magnesium engine block, hollow camshafts, plastic camshaft cover, improved combustion chambers, a further evolved Double VANOS VANOS = VAriable NOckenwellen Steuerung = variable camshaft control, or variable valve timing, higher fuel injection pressure, sophisticated engine electronics, an electric coolant pump, a variable-volume oil pump and an oil/coolant heat exchanger are the other weight-saving features and improvements of this engine over previous generations.

For the Coupes: Available xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive.

The 2011 BMW 335i xDrive Coupe combines intelligent all-wheel drive with the power of BMW’s new 300-horsepower, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine. Likewise, the 2011 BMW 328i xDrive Coupe will impress with its 230-hp, 3.0-liter inline-6 engine featuring magnesium-aluminum construction. On smooth, dry roads BMW’s xDrive gives a sporty, rear-wheel drive feel. But on a wet or snow-covered road, xDrive automatically sends more torque to the axle with more traction. BMW’s xDrive is the most sophisticated and responsive all-wheel drive system on the market today. It has proven its merits, in terms of agility and safety, in the 19 BMW models currently offered with xDrive in the U.S.

For the Convertibles: Sun-Reflective Leather offers cooler seats

BMW is the first carmaker in the world to use sun-reflective technology to mitigate temperatures on leather seating, armrest surfaces, headrests, and gear shifter. The process uses modified color pigments imbedded in the leather during the production process to reflect the infrared radiation of the sun in wavelengths of more than 720 nanometers.

This leather treatment is able to reduce surface temperatures on dark interior colors by up to 20 Celsius degrees (36 Fahrenheit degrees), and also offers advantages on light-colored upholstery, where the heating effect of sunshine is less severe, reducing the surface temperature by as much as 15 Celsius degrees (27 Fahrenheit degrees). All other qualities of the leather remained unchanged.

Official Release: Yesterday, BMW of North America accepted the Ward’s 10 Best Engines award for its groundbreaking 3.0-liter BMW Advanced Diesel engine at the North American International Auto Show. For the 2010 model year and the second year in a row, BMW’s sequential twin-turbo inline-6 diesel engine was elected to the 10 Best Engines list by the Ward’s AutoWorld panel of expert judges. To win a place on the 10 Best Engines list, an engine must score highly in measures of horsepower, torque, refinement, technical relevance, and comparative data.

“When we accepted this award last year for BMW’s then-new Advanced Diesel engine, no one could predict for certain how Americans would adopt BMW Diesel in the coming months,” said Hans Hohenner, General Manager of Drivetrain Development for BMW Group. “Now, I’m pleased to say that the Advanced Diesel inline-6 powered 30 percent of all BMW X5 models sold in the United States in December 2009. Americans are discovering the magic of new-generation Diesels, and compared to only a year ago, Diesel has gained fantastic momentum in the marketplace.”

Featuring all-aluminum construction, BMW’s 3.0-liter sequential twin-turbo Advanced Diesel inline-6 offers V-8 performance with four-cylinder fuel efficiency: 265 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of torque. EPA efficiency figures are 23 (city) / 36 (highway) in the 2010 BMW 335d Sedan, which is capable of 0 – 60mph in 6.0 seconds or better. Those figures make the 335d Sedan the fastest diesel-powered passenger car available in the US. It is also the most fuel efficient vehicle BMW has ever sold here. In addition to the 335d Sedan, this BMW Advanced Diesel engine is available in the X5 xDrive35d Sports Activity Vehicle, which is capable of 0 – 60mph in 6.9 seconds and 26 mpg on the highway.

We originally broke the news last week of BMW bringing the 2011 335is to market but now that it has made its way around cyber-space we thought we show you some official documents from Canada. The “is” will be exclusive to coupes and convertibles. The boost in performance will be similar to the X6’s 7RR package and BMW Performance Kit with 22hp and 32 lb-ft bumps (322hp/332 lb-ft). The “is” will differ from those performance upgrades as it will feature “overboost” and provide a maximum of 369 lb-ft of torque.

Worth noting is that the list of standard features are for the Canadian market and there are some differences in content to the US, wheels being the main difference as the US will see 19s as at least an option. In other parts of the world these models will be referred to as the 340i.

The short answer is; we don’t know. But let’s take a look at what we know. Last weekend we exclusively broke the news that the 135i was not only getting the DCT 7 speed dual clutch transmission but also the N55 inline six turbo. More specifically BMW is replacing the N54 dual turbo with the N55 single turbo twin-scroll. It’s great news for fans of the 1 Series and DCT technology but what about that engine change?

As you may have heard from our interview with Martin Birkmann, the switch to the N55 is all about efficiency. And on paper it makes sense with identical numbers in regards power and torque. But what about the N54’s power being under-reported? We had heard for years from automotive magazines and websites that dynoed the engine that the N54 was actually putting out well over 320 hp (and sometimes much more). While no one yet has dynoed an N55 we’d guess that we will not see those kind of numbers from the single turbo twin-scroll set-up. What does all this mean? While on paper the N55 is a match for the N54, in the real world we can’t help but wonder if the 2011 135i and the 335i didn’t just lose a little power versus the 2010 models.

Anything lost (even unofficially) BMW will be giving back in the form of the forthcoming BMW Performance engine kit for the N55. Engineers are currently fine-tuning the kit and expect to have it available sometime in the latter half of the year. However beyond that option, BMW firmly believes that the N55 will be “tuner proof”. They expect that tuning the N55 will be infinitely harder to do as compared with the N54. So while the N55 has the efficiency, for the enthusiast it clearly has some downsides. If you take away the N54’s oil cooler issues it’s been a fantastic engine for BMW and the enthusiast market. It has fantastic power and torque while delivering respectable fuel figures.

Will the N54 equipped 135i and 335i be the more coveted cars in the years ahead? No doubt some will think so. However if true, we’d guess that would only be the case for the enthusiast market. The N55 will surely continue to serve multiple BMW models well while being noticeably more efficient. It’s just a shame that we may have lost some of that unadvertised oomph that the N54 was known for.

To take a slight break from NAIAS, we are happy to introduce you to our good friend Jonathan Spira’s latest endeavor into the blogosphere- The Diesel Driver. TDD is an online publication focussing on the experience of owning and driving diesel powered automobiles. The site provides reviews and information about diesel models from the classics to future offerings.

Of course this is relevant to us at BimmerFile because the main focus of the site will be Jonathan’s recent acquisition of a 335d via European Delivery. As I have said a thousand times before: “There is no better way to get your next BMW than via European Delivery!” Jonathan wholeheartedly agrees with that view and recently left his baby to be placed on a ship bound for the US of A. I am jealous of his latest pick-up as the 335d is one of my favorite cars currently on the road and it has been a few months since I was in Germany drinking the fabulous Augustiner!

So without further ado here is an excerpt from a recent post:

On December 30, I left my brand new 335d in the care of the E.H. Harms, a unit of BLG Logistics, in Munich. Harms is BMW’s shipping agent and takes care of all aspects of shipping the car to the United States, including booking passage and customs brokerage.

Harms booked the 335d on the Wallenius Wilhelmsen MV Manon, voyage CQ002-MAN, which left Bremerhaven today heading for Göteborg, Sweden.

For the full story and other offerings including his backstage pass through the Welt and BMW manufacturing in Munich click on over to The Diesel Driver.

For 2011 the 135i will undergo a motor transplant. It will be powered by the new N55 inline-six. This new 3L motor features a single twin scroll turbo unlike the previous (N54) motor which featured two turbos. The dual scroll is said to provide the same effect as two turbos. The official numbers say just that, at 300hp and 300 lb-ft. all the while giving better throttle response in-part to the inclusion of BMW’s famous Valvetronic system on this new 6 cylinder.

The 135i for 2011 will be offered in 6 speed manual or with a 7 speed Dual Clutch transmission (a true auto will not be offered) as we also reported.

The 3 series will also receive this same engine switch with the same<del datetime="2010-01-16T01:05:51+00:00"> 8</del> 6 speed transmissions later this spring. The recently revealed high performance “iS” version of the 3er will feature a tuned version of the current twin turbo motor (N54) and a 7 speed DCT.

The switch to the N55 is the product of BMW striving to improve fuel economy as part of its Efficient Dynamics initiative, this new motor when coupled with the <del datetime="2010-01-16T01:05:51+00:00">8</del> 6 speed auto is said to improve fuel economy by nearly 10%. <del datetime="2010-01-16T01:05:51+00:00">The 8 speed is also said to incorporate auto start/stop to further conserve fuel. </del>

What this also means is that all of you that were looking to tune your next BMW via the aftermarket for those weekend drag races- your window of time is closing as rumors have this N55 possessing some serious anti-hacking devices in addition to the complex Valvetronic system. Personally I rather have a 2011 with launch control and the pending BMW Performance Engine Kit but that is neither here nor there.

Before the holiday break I was lucky enough to spend some seat time behind the wheel of a BMW Performance 335i sedan with Eric Riehle. Eric is the new Accessory Development Manager for BMW Performance and Motorsport. In other words, he is every enthusiast’s best friend as he helps create and bring to market the accessories we all would like.

So without further delay here is our exclusive interview with Eric.

BimmerFile- Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

Eric Riehle- I have worked for BMW for 10 years. I began as a Master Technician, and worked my way up to Field Service Engineer, Product Engineer, Quality Manager and before this position I was the Workshop / Warranty Manager at the Port Jersey Vehicle Distribution Center.

BF- Sounds like you have some great knowledge of what makes BMWs tick. Do you have any racing or experience with modding cars?

ER- Much of my life I have been racing things, from a 3-wheeler (trike) in my youth, to attending High Performance Driving schools in my modified E36 ///M3. I plan on obtaining my competition-racing license and competing as soon as I can. I have been making adjustments and modifications to my car to get it to where I want it to be before competing in it.

BF- We have covered BMW Performance for the past year and from the beginning we were concerned about the pricing of it compared to the competition. While the accessories are great they are just not priced competitively. Are there plans to lower pricing?

ER- We recently announced price adjustments to the BMW Performance product line. I will provide you with the necessary information to pass on to your readers (covered here). The new pricing structure is a better fit for the current economic environment. These parts originate in Germany and are subject to currency fluctuations and market competition.

We feel that we make a product that is better than original equipment so it deserves a premium. It is not a value priced line as these components are extensively engineered and tested to preserve the longevity and the overall experience of owning a BMW.

BF- That is great news! That will allow some people that were on the fence because of pricing to get on board and experience some of the products. I now have to ask, Why was the Performance Engine Kit delayed ?

ER- While I’ll be the first to acknowledge that I wanted the kit to hit the streets as quickly as possible, it’s important to build maximum anticipation for a new product. Keep in mind this was BMW’s first US experience certifying an accessory tuning kit to be 50-state legal, and we wanted to get it right on the first try. The Power Kit program was launched in three phases: 1) port installed dealer demo cars, 2) port installed customer kits on new purchases, and 3) the final phase being the dealer installed Power Kits which recently commenced.

BF- Now that the program is up and running, how have sales been?

ER- I do not have the numbers in front of me at the moment but there have been about 270 kits installed at the port in the last 3 months. This is a good showing and confirms what I said earlier about building excitement for a new product.

BF- A lot of our readers have noted that the torque numbers on the 6 speed manual version of the engine kit is a bit of a disappointment. Why the difference in output when compared the to the automatic?

ER- The torque increase is noticeable, and an improvement over stock in both versions but the reason for the difference in output is due to certain transmission and clutch components having a peak operating range for durability and longevity. We prefer to stay in that range for obvious reasons.

The kit requires the factory remote oil cooler (SA 840 option), which comes with sports package or manual transmission cars. Additional cooling in the form of a higher output fan and an additional radiator are installed to ensure engine longevity and reliability.

BF- So, the reason for the decreased output is not that BMW did not want the BMW Performance cars to compete with ///M too closely (as some have speculated)?

ER- By no means is that even remotely close to the reason.

BF- With the introduction of the N55 inline-six cylinder twin-scroll turbo coming to market this spring, will we see an engine kit for it and what does this mean for the N54?

ER- We are developing a Power Kit for the N55 (and exploring one for the N63) but that does not mean that the N54 is going to be leaving the market this Spring.

BF- Are there plans for a diesel Performance Engine kit?

ER- Not for the US at this time.

BF- What can we expect to see from BMW Performance in the next year?

ER- We are looking into expanding the lineup of components to other model lines. The Z4, X6, 3 Series coupe and M3 are being explored.

BF- ///M3? Speaking of the ///M3, What ever happened the BMWNA offering the GT4?

ER- BMW Performance currently does not offer many components for the E9X M3 and with the recent launch of a product in the rest of the world we may be able to offer some of those components in addition to our accessory line. I can’t really go into details at this time except to say that we are pursuing avenues to offer M3 owner’s more equipment for tracking their cars.

As for the GT4, it is a continuing work in progress. BMW Motorsport is working on homologating the car for the US (which is no easy feat) and it has hit some speed bumps in the road but has not given up.

BF- We field a lot of questions about the availability of an LSD for the 1 and 3 series. Is this something that BMW Performance will offer?

ER- <del datetime="2010-01-30T13:34:30+00:00">We currently offer an LSD as part of the E46 full product line</del>. We have looked into offering an LSD for the E9X chassis but have not created one due to the overall lack of demand. We can build almost anything as long as demand is there and there is a business case for it. Edit- There was some confusion as to if the E46 differential was in fact limited slip, it is not but has different gearing.

BF- Are there any new products that you are especially excited about?

ER- We recently introduced a new BMW Performance steering wheel. It is covered in Alcantara, has a flat bottom and features a BMW Performance Yellow stripe as well as the exclusive white stitching. It is a thick wheel that is ideal for track days and daily driving. It does not have the electronics (lap timer, shift lights, etc.) of our other wheel but it is great in its own right and priced in the $600- $700 range.

We have also recently been able to offer the front air dam on the 3 Series Sedan/Touring which was unavailable for sometime. With this part of the aerodynamics kit the front fog lights must be removed and deactivated.

BF- The steering wheel sounds like it will be a hit for those looking to get something different (especially in Alcantara) and do not need or want all of the added features of the more expensive wheel. The reintroduction of the front aero kit is a good thing as well.

BF- One last question; I know that your predecessor was working with BMW Financial Services to have some of these parts be able to be residualized as part of a new car lease when installed prior to delivery. Is there any news on that front?

ER- I am happy to report that we were able to work with BMWFS to have some of the BMW Performance parts installed together as a group of similar components be residualized to some extent. We feel this is a step in the right direction for those that lease vehicles.

+BMWFS residual adders PDF+

BF- Eric, I thank you for your time and all the information you have shared with us. I wish you the best in your new position and we hope to see more from BMW Performance in the future.

ER- It has been a pleasure talking with you. I believe Bimmerfile converses directly with the core audience of enthusiasts for which we designed and built the BMW Performance product line. We will be sure to keep everyone up to date with future product offerings, and I am always interested to see what products or qualities your readers feel will make BMW Performance more attractive going forward.
