The best news we’ve heard for awhile. The the 5 Series GT is failing to sell to wagon owners. What we’ve been saying would likely happen has happened and BMW is dealing with the 5GT stealing share not from the the previous E60 based 5 Series wagon. But the good news here? It looks like BMWNA will be bringing the next generation 3 Series wagon over to the US based on these sales.

Moving on to the M range we talk M5 details. Yes the 560 hp + super sedan is just months away and we’re getting hints at several pieces of technology that haven’t been talked about yet. And one of those pieces of technology (no surprised to listeners of the show) will be ceramic brakes.

We also touch on what will be under the hood of the F3X M3. Our sources are telling us it’ll be a modified version of the N55. But you’ll have to listen to hear it all.

Finally what about the 1M CSL? We won’t say it’s not happening but it remains very unlikely in our mind. But there is something coming for 1M owners…

File this under we told you so. Autonews is reporting BMWNA is disappointed with 5 Series GT sales. According to BMW the wagon/SUV hybrid isn’t attracting the 5 Series wagon crowd and instead stealing sales away from the more expensive 7 Series.

“The disappointment I have is that I thought a lot of our 5-series station wagon customers would go with the GT,” O’Donnell says. “In point of fact, that is not happening. We have lost those customers to the competition — mainly to Mercedes-Benz.

“The GT has attracted 7- and 5-series customers and conquests,” he says, “but not the station wagon customer we had hoped.”

Perhaps more importantly for BF readers BMW has changed their mind on wagons in the US given this news. THey now are publicly saying they will keep the 3 Series wagon in the US when the next generation touring debuts next year.

O’Donnell says he doesn’t want to lose wagon sales to Mercedes-Benz so BMW will keep the 3-series wagon in its lineup.

“We are not giving up the 3-series wagon because if you give it up, they will go straight to the competition,” he says.

And what about the 5 Series wagon?

O’Donnell says it may be too late for this generation. “It’s in the back of my mind,” he says. “When we do the next generation, maybe we should.”

Note: It’s a short(ish) show this week due to a special BimmerCast later today involving a world premier. Stay tuned.

This week we start off talking about the X1 and BMW’s plans for its smallest crossover in the largest market. And yes, we dish a few things that you won’t read anywhere else. Then turning out attention to the X6, 5er GT we ask the question, why? And more importantly why an X6 and no 130i hatchback.

And then we get to the most important questions, what happened to the wagons?! It’s a touchy subject and one with many different view-points. We dive into them all and come out with the same opinion going in; that wagons equal awesome.

Now that snow, ice and other winter messes are showing up all over the world we have received many question about the functions of Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). The following information is a brief synopsis of each of its functions and the basics behind it all. We hope that this information is useful and provides you with some answers to your questions. The information here is for the newer generation of cars equipped with DSC.

DSC is ON by default, there is no need to press any buttons on start up. DSC uses a series of sensors to detect wheel spin, yaw rate of the car and other properties. Using sensors and other electronics it can apply the brakes as needed, cut engine power and with Active Steering it can make small steering corrections to better keep the car under control. In layman terms, all the nannies are on by default and help to keep the car from spinning out. When DSC is intervening a caution light will flash in the instrument cluster.

In some models, DTC (Dynamic Traction control) is a sub-function of DSC. It is activated by briefly pressing the DTC button. A light will light up in instrument cluster indicating this function has been activated. DTC will allow the wheels to spin, increases the angle at which the system will begin to apply the brakes (eliminates the yaw rate sensors) and does NOT cut the engine power. This system function is designed to allow the driver to spin the wheels in order to get through snow, ice and other conditions where wheel spin is required. While certain sensors are deactivated others still remain active. This function also provides a more sporty driving experience in dry conditions while at the same time being a limited security blanket. Having some track time messing with this system, DTC will still cut in and apply braking so you can’t get the back end out all that much but it still allows you full power to motor through. Like DSC a blinking caution light indicates the system is intervening.

DSC/DTC can be turned OFF by holding the DTC button for 3 seconds. The caution indicator light (as Shown above) will remain lit in the instrument cluster, the nannies are now off and you are on your own so stay within your abilities!

A function of the DSC system that does remain active even when everything is OFF is the e-Diff. 1 series cars and those 3ers produced after March 2008 include this. With the launch of the latest generation 7 Series and 5 Series, xDrive equipped vehicles also now features this and the ability to vector drive power to the outside wheel through use of braking force. The e-Diff essentially mimics the concept of a limited slip differential (LSD). It accomplishes this by applying braking to the spinning wheel and thus transferring more power to the wheel with better traction. It will allow you to leave strips if you are so inclined. This feature is also active in DTC mode.

While DSC and its companions provide you with an extra level of safety it is important to remember that no electronics, no matter how sophisticated, can over come the laws of physics and driver ability. In other words, drive safe and within your ability and exercise caution in less than ideal road conditions.

BMW NA has officially released it’s 2011 model year changes and we’ve got all the details for you. So if you’re considering a 2011 model year BMW of any kind this is essential reading…

BMW’s new inline-6 gasoline engine.

Beginning with model year 2011 production, several BMW models (135i, 335i, 535i, 535i Gran Turismo, X5 xDrive35i, and X6 xDrive35i) will switch to the new, single twin-scroll turbocharged inline-6 “N55” engine. The newest BMW inline-6 engine is the first BMW inline-6 to combine turbocharging, High Precision direct fuel injection, and Valvetronic variable intake technology. It features a single, mid-sized turbocharger with a “twin-scroll” housing to boost performance and minimize the response lag. Together, this combination produces the same at 300hp and 300 lb-ft of the previous N54, but the fuel efficiency improves and the emissions are reduced.

A further advantage of turbocharging is that this is the most weight-efficient method to boost engine power and performance. The N55 turbocharged inline-6 weighs approximately 150 lbs. less than an equally powerful eight-cylinder engine displacing 4.0 liters. This lower weight means a significant advantage not only in fuel economy, but also in balancing the car’s weight distribution.

Using Valvetronic for the first time on a turbocharged inline-6 allows the engine to “inhale” air for combustion with virtually no delay and with reduced pumping losses. As a result, the engine makes power more quickly than ever before, and this is proven by the N55’s ability to reach peak torque at 1200rpm, 200rpm earlier than its twin-turbo predecessor [N54].

Packaging is better for the new engine, as the BMW Digital Motor Electronics (DME) control unit is now mounted directly to the engine, shortening the required wiring harness length and providing more efficient cooling to the DME through the use of intake air. Furthermore, using a single turbocharger means only a single exhaust stream must find its way to the catalytic converter, so only a single catalytic converter is used on the new engine. The single catalytic converter can be activated more quickly at cold start than the preceding twin-catalyst configuration, so the new engine has a cleaner cold start emissions signature than its predecessor. The new “N55” engine will be installed in the 135i Coupe and Convertible, the 335i Sedan, Coupe and Convertible (excludes 335is models), the new 535i Sedan when it arrives this summer, the 535i Gran Turismo arriving this spring and finally, the X5 xDrive35i and X6 xDrive35i Sports Activity Vehicles® starting with April production.

2011 BMW 1 Series Coupe & Convertible.

In the 1 Series, BMW introduced a modern and authentic performance coupe that draws inspiration from the iconic BMW 2002 model of some 40 years ago. By combining sporty rear wheel drive dynamics, agile handling, powerful engines, and seating for four, the 1 Series Coupe rekindles the flames that the BMW 2002 first ignited. The 2011 model year 1 Series Coupe and Convertible went on sale in spring and are available in two versions: the 128i and the 135i.

For model year 2011, the BMW 135i receives the all-new “N55” inline-6 engine (see Page 1), and the sporty 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission from the Z4 Roadster replaces the 6-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

The 2011 128i Coupe and Convertible continue to be powered by the 3.0-liter, 230 horsepower inline 6-cylinder engine that generates 200 lb-ft of torque. The engine features Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology and magnesium /aluminum lightweight construction.

An M Sport Package is now available on all 1 Series models, with sporty components perfectly matched to each vehicle. Last year, the 1 Series received interior enhancements which include the 4th generation iDrive system when equipped with optional BMW Navigation. It features new menus, new direct-select keys as well as Programmable Memory Keys. With access to GoogleMaps database search capability, subscribers to the optional BMW Assist Convenience Plan can access BMW Search to find a point of interest with a keyword.

2011 BMW 3 Series Sedan & Sports Wagon.

The 2011 3 Series Sedan and Sports Wagon are poised to maintain their legendary market leadership with the latest exterior and interior styling, state-of-the-art technologies, and superb ergonomics.

The 2011 335i Sedan receives BMW’s remarkable new turbocharged inline-6 engine with Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology and High Precision direct fuel injection, coupled with a single twin-scroll turbocharger. Output is 300 horsepower. The celebrated 6-speed manual transmission remains standard and the 6-speed Steptronic automatic is optional. 328i models continue to feature the 3.0-liter, 230 horsepower inline-6 engine with magnesium / aluminum lightweight construction and Valvetronic.

With a subtle freshening in 2009, the benchmark 3 Series received updates to exterior design features, a more dynamic profile, and a wider stance. The 4th generation iDrive controller and high-resolution display are now included when equipped with the Navigation system option.

Popular on 3 Series models is an M Sport Package, with sporty components perfectly matched to each vehicle. Beyond the popular Sport Package, the M Sport Package includes an Anthracite headliner, an exterior aerodynamic package with BMW Individual Shadowline trim, and M-specific wheels, door sills, footrest, gearshift lever, and steering wheel. The M exterior color LeMans Blue Metallic is also available on 3 Series models with the M Sport Package.

2011 3 Series Coupe & Convertible

BMW has announced substantial enhancements to the 2011 3 Series Coupe and Convertible, including outstanding style updates for 328i and 335i models and a new engine for 335i models. A new model, the high-performance 335is, also becomes available for the 2011 model year (see next section). All 2011 3 Series Coupe and Convertible models went on sale in Spring 2010.

All-new is the engine for the 335i model (see Page 1). The 6-speed manual gearbox, beloved by North American enthusiast drivers, remains standard, and the well-known 6-speed Steptronic automatic is optional, now available with “pull-style” shift paddles on the multifunction steering wheel.

The profiles of the BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible are instantly recognizable at first glance. Beyond the basic shape of the cars and their classic lines, the new design of the headlights, the enhanced depth and detail of the taillights, the interior, and even the exterior mirrors were specifically created for the Coupe and Convertible. These unique design elements reflect the sporty character of the car. The driver who chooses a two-door vehicle desires a car with dynamic looks as well as driving performance. With this in mind, BMW engineers and designers set out to create a unique, unmistakable blend of design features and most importantly, driving pleasure.

2011 335is Coupe & Convertible

The hot new BMW 335is Coupe and Convertible are each destined to take a place in history among the line of desirable, often collectible, BMW “s” models. Based on the newly-enhanced BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible (see previous page), the new BMW 335is features the award-winning, twin-turbocharged BMW inline-6 engine, specially tuned and equipped to produce 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque from its 3.0-liters. For the first time on a BMW 3 Series in the US, the 7-speed Double Clutch Transmission (DCT) with Launch Control will be available as an option, in place of the standard 6-speed manual transmission. Equipped with the DCT, the 335is Coupe is capable of 0-60mph acceleration in 5 seconds flat.

The “s” was first seen by North Americans on the original BMW 3 Series, which was imported from 1977-1983. The 1980 BMW 320is included the most desirable 3 Series equipment, including Recaro sport seats, sport steering wheel, halogen high-beams, sunroof, dual color-keyed wing mirrors, anti-sway bars, exterior aerodynamic enhancements, and cross-spoke light-alloy wheels. Later in the1980s, the BMW 3 Series and 5 Series were each available as “s” models, including the BMW 325es, 325is, and 535is. Again, sticking with a proven formula, BMW gave the “s” models enhanced aerodynamics, sport suspension, on-board computer (OBC) and Check Control, sport leather seats, and other features. As the newest “s” model, therefore, the 2011 BMW 335is follows its lineage by offering stunning looks, more power, and a raft of functional, performance-inspired equipment tailored to suit the enthusiast driver.

2011 BMW 5 Series Sedan

The world debut of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan marks the epitome of modern design and driving pleasure in the world of premium midsize sedans. Through its athletic and executive looks, driving dynamics typical of BMW, and innovative comfort and safety features, the sixth generation of BMW’s executive express accurately reflects the standards upheld by the world’s most successful manufacturer of premium cars.

2011 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo

Entering its second model year, the 2011 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo adds new facets to BMW’s Ultimate Driving Machine tradition and refines the concept of first-class travel. For the very first time, the attributes of an elegant sedan, a contemporary Sports Activity Vehicle and a classic Gran Turismo are masterfully melded into a single, harmonious vehicle concept.

New for 2011 are the xDrive all-wheel drive equipped 5 Series Gran Turismo models. The 535i xDrive Gran Turismo will be priced from $59,175 and the 550i xDrive Gran Turismo will be priced from $67,075, in each case a $2300 premium over the traditional rear-wheel drive models.

As a result of final confirmatory fuel economy testing, the highway and combined values for the 550i Gran Turismo have been increased by one MPG. This eliminates the gas guzzler tax on all 2011 5 Series Gran Turismo models.

The traditional European term Gran Turismo (Grand Touring) was first applied by Italian carmakers in the 1950s when they combined the performance, handling, and style of a 2-seat sports car with luxurious amenities and luggage room for each occupant. BMW’s new Gran Turismo nurtures this tradition in its own contemporary way, providing exceptional space, style, luxury, and comfort for four passengers, plus the performance and driving pleasure of a BMW.

Starting with September 2010 production, the 535i Gran Turismo will be available with xDrive, preserving the Gran Turismo’s high dynamic ability in all four seasons. This unique combination gives BMW’s newest 5 Series Gran Turismo a new level of performance and efficiency in the true spirit of BMW EfficientDynamics.

BMW’s signature corona rings feature LED technology and take on several functions: as parking lights, as an identifying element when the headlights are on, and as daytime running lights. The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo interior combines space, luxury and stylish materials to create a premium ambiance. In the rear seats as well as up front, there’s a sense of generous space and comprehensive amenities, promoting relaxed and accommodating travel.
In standard form, the rear seating accommodates three passengers, with a 40-20-40 split of the backrest allowing for selective fold-down. In addition, the entire seat cushion can be adjusted 3.9-in. fore and aft and the individual backrest sections can be adjusted over a range of 15°-33°. Optional as part of the Luxury Rear Seating Package are individual, multi-adjustable power seats, separated by a center console with cupholders and a storage compartment.

Accompanying the variable seating accommodations is variable cargo capacity, ranging from an already generous 15.5 cu ft. in the sedan-style enclosed trunk to fully 60.0 cu ft. (DIN rating) with folded rear seats and SAV-style long cargo floor. A variable partition between the trunk and passenger compartments provides occupants with sedan-type climate and noise insulation even when the trunk is being loaded, yet moves with the seats when they are adjusted and folds flat when the greatest capacity is needed.

2011 BMW 7 Series Sedan

Apart from the addition of the powerful ActiveHybrid 7 and the inline-6 powered 740i and 740Li models, the 7 Series goes unchanged for the 2011 model year, with one exception:

the sensor for Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go will be a smaller, less obvious sensor unit first introduced on the new 5 Series. The placement of the sensor on the 7 Series will remain to the right of kidney grille.

The BMW 760Li Sedan went on sale in Fall of 2009 featuring the latest chapter in BMW’s decades-long history of harmonious V12 engines. This newest BMW V12 produces 535 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque with help from twin turbochargers and High Precision Direct Injection. It also marked the first use of BMW’s new 8-speed automatic transmission. The outcome is a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds in a stylish, luxurious package. The long list of standard features and amenities ensures the comfort of each occupant.

Also, in the continuing development of BMW’s flagship 7 Series, BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive system has become available on the 750i and 750Li Sedans. In the 7 Series application, xDrive has been refined and enhanced to ensure a new benchmark is established for handling characteristics among all-wheel drive sedans. xDrive limits understeer by shifting power rearward (up to 80% to the rear axle) while preserving the stability for which BMW has been so widely recognized. Also, the system can now apply a precise combination of throttle and individual rear-wheel braking to maintain neutral handling in a corner, regardless of road surface conditions. These key enhancements to xDrive ensure that the 750i xDrive and 750Li xDrive are two of the most nimble all-wheel drive sedans available in any vehicle segment.

For 2011, BMW announced the North American return of the 7 Series with an inline-6 engine. The new BMW 740i and BMW 740Li achieve a remarkable balance of power, efficiency, and sporty driving dynamics. Both models went on sale in the United States as 2011 models in Spring 2010.

In 1977, the original BMW 7 Series was launched exclusively with inline-6 propulsion. The United States first met the BMW 7 Series in the 1978 model year as the 733i Sedan. The 733i featured a 3.2-liter inline-6 engine rated at 197 horsepower. The 733i remained on sale in America until it was replaced in 1985 by the BMW 735i Sedan. The 735i, which featured an updated inline-6 engine producing 218 horsepower from 3.4 liters, enjoyed a production run that lasted through the end of the 1992 model year. The 735i was joined by the extended-wheelbase 735iL in May of 1988.

The 2011 model 740i and 740Li feature BMW’s internationally acclaimed twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine with output of 315 horsepower. All-aluminum engine construction, High Precision direct fuel injection, VANOS variable camshaft technology, and Brake Energy Regeneration are a few of the technologies used under the BMW EfficientDynamics engineering philosophy to place the 740i and 740Li among the most powerful six-cylinder luxury sedans in the world. Delivering power to the rear wheels is BMW’s 6-speed automatic transmission, well-known for fast, smooth gearshifts and an ability to intelligently adapt to the driver. Both models are available with the full complement of 7 Series options and packages, including the M Sport Package, Driver Assistance Package, Luxury Seating Packages, Rear Entertainment Package, and even the BMW Individual Composition Package.

2011 BMW ActiveHybrid 7

The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 arrived on American shores late in the second quarter of 2010 as a 2011 model. Based on the 5th-generation BMW 7 Series, this unique car sets new standards for performance and efficiency in the premium luxury class.

Symbiosis of a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine with a 3-phase synchronous electric motor gives the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 a combined output of 455 hp and maximum torque of 515 lb-ft from 2000 – 3000rpm. Power is transmitted via an 8-speed automatic transmission with the electric motor positioned between the engine and the torque converter. The electric motor receives its supply of energy from a lithium-ion battery developed specifically for this automobile.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 accelerates to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, while delivering better fuel efficiency than the 750i and 750Li. Auto Start Stop maximizes efficiency by avoiding engine idling when stopped. The ActiveHybrid 7 is distinguished by aerodynamically-tuned ten-spoke 19-inch Aero wheels, and is available in Bluewater Metallic exterior paintwork. The BMW ActiveHybrid 7L has a wheelbase increased by 5.5″, all of which is devoted to the enhanced comfort of rear-seat passengers. Both models are available with a wide range of options from the portfolio of equipment offered on the BMW 7 Series.

2011 BMW ALPINA B7 with xDrive

The BMW ALPINA B7 represents the second generation of ALPINA automobiles based on the BMW 7 Series to be offered in the US. The first BMW ALPINA B7 was offered as a limited edition for the 2007 and 2008 model years. Newly interpreted and based on the current BMW 7 Series platform, the B7 again sets the benchmark in terms of performance, refinement, technology, luxury and exclusivity. The BMW ALPINA B7 is offered with xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive, and in both standard- and long-wheelbase editions.

Yielding exquisite levels of power and torque from the twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter V8, and in conjunction with the electronically-adjustable suspension with active roll stabilization, the new B7 promises to offer a spectrum of driving experiences so broad as to be unheard of in this class of automobiles. The evolution of the traditional 20-spoke 21″ ALPINA Classic wheels underlines the fresh design language found throughout the B7 and imparts to it a distinctive appearance and powerful stance.

All B7 sedans are equipped with BMW’s twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter, all-aluminum, High Precision Direct Injection V-8 engine, enhanced by ALPINA to produce 500 (373kW) horsepower and 516 lb-ft (700Nm) of torque. This rear-wheel drive performance/luxury sedan achieves 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds (4.6 seconds with xDrive). With maximum torque available across an unusually broad engine range, from 3,000 to 4,750 rpm, the B7 accelerates effortlessly from virtually any speed.

The B7 sedan is finished with ALPINA aerodynamic developments, including front and rear spoilers which not only enhance the appearance but also improve stability and performance at high speeds. In true “form-follows-function” fashion, the ALPINA front integrates the fresh-air requirements of the transmission and engine oil coolers, which are separated out of the main cooler module for improved efficiency. The spoilers reduce lift at the front by 30% and rear by15%. The exhaust system’s two double tailpipes are seamlessly integrated into the rear bumper. The newest evolution of the traditional 20-spoke ALPINA Classic wheels gives the B7 a distinctive appearance and powerful stance.

The interior of the B7 sedan features ALPINA blue illuminated door sill trims, the Switch-tronic steering wheel in hand-stitched Lavalina leather, and the Black-Panel LCD screen instrument cluster branded with ALPINA.

The full complement of BMW 7 Series exterior colors remains available, in addition to the signature ALPINA Blue metallic paint.

2010 BMW 6 Series Coupe, Convertible

Summer of 2010 marks the end of production of the current generation 6 Series and M6 Coupe and Convertible. Look for a new 6 Series to be released in due time.

2011 BMW X5 SAV®

For 2011, the BMW X5 models are enhanced with new powertrains and updated design. Innovative new design elements and powertrains are the result of over 4,000 new parts created by BMW designers and engineers for the 2011 BMW X5. Two of the X5’s powertrains are all-new for 2011, creating the new X5 xDrive50i ($59,275) and X5 xDrive35i ($46,675), in addition to the familiar BMW Advanced Diesel X5 xDrive35d ($52,175). All models receive a design update that enhances the brilliant focus and aesthetic appearance of the X5 brand. The gasoline models receive BMW’s new 8-speed automatic transmission for better acceleration and fuel efficiency.

The X5 xDrive50i features BMW’s 4.4-liter “reverse flow” V-8 engine with 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, coupled to the new 8-speed automatic transmission. The X5 xDrive35i features BMW’s newest inline-6 engine (see Page 1), with 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft, also coupled to the 8-speed automatic. These two models are capable of 0-60mph acceleration in 5.3 seconds and 6.4 seconds, respectively, while achieving EPA highway fuel efficiency ratings of 20 and 23 miles per gallon, respectively.

The updated body design of the 2011 BMW X5 is characterized by well-balanced proportions that accentuate the vehicle’s powerful presence and agility. A long wheelbase, short front and rear body overhangs, and large light-alloy wheels provide a visual balance between the front and rear of the vehicle. Square-shaped, carefully flared wheel arches hint at the X5’s all-wheel drive traction and other-roads capability. The body lines sweep upwards from the front and rear wheels, communicating BMW’s near-perfect 50-50 front-rear weight distribution which is so essential to the X5’s legendary driving dynamics.

The sides of the X5 are elegantly stretched though the strong horizontal lines of each side. The surface of the hood flows seamlessly into the waistline, while the prominent, gently inclined contour line at the door handle level extends from the front wheel arches to the rear of the vehicle. These character lines symbolize power, stability, and presence.

With its distinctively contoured hood, large BMW kidney grille and dual round headlights, the new BMW X5 boasts an expressive front end that symbolizes power and presence.

The newest interpretation of the X5’s look is led by the redesign of the front fascia and position of the standard fog lamps. Due to an increase in the number of elements painted body color, the front end gives the impression of being lower. At the same time, the increased size of both the central and outer air intakes hint at the boosted engine output. The black trim at the bottom edge of the body is now considerably narrower. A matte-finished silver protection plate extends across the entire width of the central air intake, emphasizing the muscular features of the SAV, and accentuates the new X5’s character.

An M Sport Package is now available on most X5 models, with sporty components perfectly matched to each vehicle. Last year showcased the introduction of the BMW Advanced Diesel-powered X5 xDrive35d. It features a 3.0-liter sequential twin-turbo inline-6 diesel engine with 265 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of torque. The X5 xDrive 35d offers class-leading performance and fuel efficiency: 0 – 60 mph in 6.9 seconds and an equally impressive 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway EPA rating.

2011 BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupe

What if you could have the other-roads capability of BMW’s celebrated X5, combined into one vehicle with the presence and remarkable driving dynamics of a BMW Coupe? The BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupe is equally at home taking the family skiing, or taking a few laps around the famous Nϋrburgring.

The superb, even remarkable driving dynamics of the X6 are attributable to another BMW innovation: Dynamic Performance Control. DPC distributes torque as required in all situations, feeding a varying degree of power and torque to the two rear wheels. DPC is the only system of its kind able to provide its stabilizing effect both under acceleration and deceleration.

The X6 is available with a choice of twin-turbocharged engines. The 2011 X6 xDrive35i ($57.375) features BMW’s all-new 3.0-liter twin-scroll turbo inline-6 with 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. The 2011 X6 xDrive50i ($68,075) features BMW’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 with 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. Both models feature the new 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission.

2011 BMW ActiveHybrid X6

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 ($89,775) made its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in September 2009 and went on sale at US BMW Centers in December 2009. BMW ActiveHybrid technology provides outstanding driving performance with equally impressive efficiency. It melds both of these qualities to offer a truly unique driving experience.

The drive system featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 consists of a 400 hp twin-turbocharged V-8 gasoline engine and two electric synchronous motors delivering 91 hp and 86 hp, respectively. Maximum system output is 480 hp, and peak torque reaches 575 lb-ft.

ActiveHybrid technology offers a boost to performance and simultaneously improves fuel efficiency by approximately 20 percent versus a comparable vehicle powered by a combustion engine alone. The result is an enjoyable driving experience and an increase of four miles per gallon to 17 mpg on the City drive cycle (EPA). Precisely controlled interaction of the gasoline engine and electric motors contributes to the efficiency of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 at all speeds. 0-60 mph takes 5.4 seconds. Top speed is limited electronically to 130 mph.

These performance figures are made possible by utilizing a two-mode active transmission. The ideal combination of the two power modes can be controlled for enhanced efficiency and dynamic performance in any driving condition. BMW’s first full hybrid model is able to run exclusively on electric power – entirely free of CO2 – up to a speed of 37 mph for up to 1.6 miles.

2011 BMW X3 (All-new)

The all-new BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle will be introduced late in 2010 as a 2011 model, and will go on sale early in the first quarter of 2011. In the United States, the X3 xDrive28i and X3 xDrive35i will be available. Read the complete press release at bmwusanews.com.

2011 BMW Z4 Roadster

Auto Start-Stop is a BMW EfficientDynamics fuel saving measure previously unavailable in the US except on ActiveHybrid models. Auto Stop-Start will automatically stop the engine when the transmission is placed in Neutral and the clutch is released. The engine will immediately restart as soon as the clutch is depressed. The system is driver selectable and will only function once the engine is up to operating temperature and the ambient temperature is between 37 Degrees F and 85 Degrees F.

The new Manual M Sport Seats (M3 Sedan, Coupe) offer the same adjustments as the previous electric seats but with manual adjustment in order to save weight (approximately 5kg per seat) and expense when power memory seats are not required. Lumber support and seatback side bolters remain electrically adjustable. Power Seats remain standard in the M3 Convertible.

2011 BMW X5 M AND X6 M

The X5 M and X6 M are unchanged for the 2011 model year.

Finding new ways to expand the boundaries of what is possible with existing BMW models has always been the singular purpose of the craftsmen at BMW M. The BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are the first all-wheel-drive models to offer the remarkable performance, dynamic driving experience, athletic design, and premium quality of a BMW M product.

Both models are powered by a new-concept BMW M engine that departs purposefully from the established ultra-high-revving V-8 and V-10 M engines powering the M3, M5 and M6 models. For power, torque, and response characteristics, BMW M has adapted twin turbocharging, High Precision direct fuel injection and accompanying new technologies that achieve the ever-consistent BMW M goal of the highest levels of performance and refinement.

Thanks to a special, M-tuned version of BMW’s Integrated Chassis Management, on-board systems including xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive and Dynamic Performance Control torque-vectoring system are maximized for handling while braking and accelerating under the most extreme circumstances. As a result, the X5 M and X6 M are able to maximize traction while precisely following the steering inputs of the driver.

The X5 M and X6 M are equipped with the M Drive system, which allows a driver to pre-configure the vehicle for maximum performance and feedback at a touch of the steering wheel-mounted M Button.

BMW EfficientDynamics

The Intelligent Way to Reduce Fuel Consumption and Emissions.
BMW’s commitment to reduce harmful emissions and help protect the environment is unique in the automobile industry. BMW applies its EfficientDynamics principles to each model by using lightweight components in key areas, new technologies for improved powertrain efficiency and more importantly, planned sustainability for the long term reduction of fuel consumption and emissions output.

This not only demonstrates our long-standing dedication to help the environment, but our ability to do so with every vehicle that wears the BMW roundel.

In this period of time, BMW has introduced many industry-leading technologies across its entire model range, such as Valvetronic throttle-less engine control, on-demand coolant and hydraulic pumps for reduced parasitic losses, and High-Precision Direct Injection. In 2009, BMW added two 50-state BMW Advanced Diesel models for an unprecedented combination of performance and low emissions. In some 2010 and 2011 models, BMW introduced Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Start-Stop technology and two BMW ActiveHybrid models. It is our unending goal to develop technologies and vehicles designed to combine the efficiency our customers desire with dynamics and performance our customers expect.

BMW ConnectedDrive Innovations: Advanced on-board use of mobile phones and music players.

Beginning with September production there will be enhancements to BMW Assist with Bluetooth and the iPod/USB Adapter. These enhancements extend the functionality through improved integration of mobile devices into the vehicle. These new features are made possible by hardware advances. (All Models)

BMW Assist with Extended Bluetooth

The Bluetooth functionality is extended beyond hands-free and phonebook support with multiple innovations. Feature support is dependent upon compatibility with the mobile device.

RIM Smart Phone Integration

Mobile Office: The industry-first mobile office integration of BlackBerry Smartphones, a customer can access email, text messages, and notes through the iDrive system providing seamless integration with the vehicle. Safety and avoiding driver distraction is paramount at BMW. In order to maintain the driver’s focus on the road, the vehicle’s voice control system (included with navigation) will read messages aloud via text-to-speech. The central screen will also display the only the first three lines of text. The full text can only be displayed when the vehicle is parked. Compatible BlackBerry hardware, firmware, and feature set will be announced later.
vCard photo support: Images of contacts stored in your phonebook are downloaded from the device and shown on the vehicle display. When the mobile phone rings, a picture of the caller will appear on the vehicle display.
External Call Lists: External call list handling downloads the “re-dial” and “received calls list” at every reconnect of the mobile device and after each call.

Bluetooth Music Streaming: Bluetooth music streaming offers wireless audio streaming from the mobile device to the vehicle. Music stored on the mobile phone is played and controlled through the iDrive controller.

iPod/USB Adapter

iPod One-wire integration: The iPod connection no longer requires the “Y-cable” for separate aux-input for sound. The iPod USB cable supplied with the iPod is all that is required to connect the device to the vehicle. The music is transferred directly from the iPod digitally to the sound system via the USB connection.

Album Cover Art: If cover art is contained in the metadata of a particular song, it will show on the vehicle display while the song is played.

Voice Control of Devices: The driver can control external devices and select genre, artist, album, and song title with the voice control system included with Navigation System.

Mobile Phone Device Driver Update: In combination with BMW Assist, the USB port can be used to upload new mobile phone and audio player device drivers. (Release timing for this feature and device driver availability are subject to change.)

Despite both the 5 Series and the 5 Series GT being introduced very recently, BMW of North America is adding a number of options and tweaking a few details of the cars for 2011 (production starting in September).

5 Series xDrive

First is the availability of two new sedan models, the 535i xDrive and 550i xDrive priced at $51,900 and $62,000 respectively. For the GT BMw is adding the 535i xDrive at a base price of $58,300 completing the 5 Series Gran Turismo product offering. The equipment profile is the same as the 535i rear wheel drive model however Integral Active Steering (2VH) is not available.

5 Series sedan M Sport Package

The M Sport Package (ZMP) returns to the 5 Series delivering performance and style for the most enthusiastic of BMW drivers. The package starts where the Dynamic Handling Package leaves off but brings a number of M style visual cues. They are: The M Aerodynamic Kit for a sportier and aggressive look, M Steering Wheel for the best ergonomic grip, Aluminum Hexagon interior trim (wood available), and to finalize the look are the M double-spoke light alloy wheels (size 18” on the 528i and 19” on the 535i, 550i, 535i xDrive, and 550i xDrive – RWD models offer performance run-flat tires and xDrive models offer all-season run flat tires).

Equipment and Price Updates

The following optional equipment updates are available as of MY11 (these are just the additions – everything that was part of each package is still there):

Camera Package (ZCE)

$1,200 Rear-view camera (3AG)

Side and top view cameras (5DL)

Sports Package (ZSP) $2,200

Addition of option 840 Increased top speed limiter

xDrive models will have the same contents as their rear wheel drive counterparts including wheel style with the exception of the tires. Rear wheel drive models come with run flat performance tires on the 19” wheel and xDrive models receive run flat all-season tires. Both 8 Cylinder models have the upgrade option for 20” style 316 which are only offered with mixed performance tires for $1,000.

Priority 1 Changes: The following have been moved to Priority 1

Luxury Seating Package (ZLU)

Nappa Leather (NA)

Gas Guzzler Tax Currently there is no Gas Guzzler tax for any Model Year 2011 5 Series Gran Turismo model. This eliminates the Gas Guzzler tax on vehicles that have been wholesaled after June 24, 2010.
Instrument Cluster Upgrade The top instrument cluster that is included with navigation will be included on non-navigation vehicles. This increases the size of the electronic portion of the display from 5.7” to 9.2”, improves the graphic detail presented, and enhances the functionality by increasing the amount of information that can be displayed.

This week we start off the conversation talking about failed tire changes and how well (or not) the M mobility kit works. We then move on to the 550 GT and how to relates to my own E28 ’88 5 Series.

We managed to touch on the 6 Series Gran Coupé with opinions split down the middle between both of us (you can break the tie in the comment section).

Sales numbers are in for April and there are a few surprises in what’s up and down (notably what’s up).

The 1M? Of course we touch on that with our thoughts on the latest photos and information. 1 Series fans, don’t miss it.

Oh and we have improved audio. Except for the first second (don’t ask) we’ve got a substantially updated and improved mix for your listening pleasure during this week’s BMW podcast.

It’s midnight and I’m Interstate 94 driving heading west. I’ve just finished the 24 Hours of LeMons (finishing 17th with a 24 year old Toyota MR2) and I’m quickly making my way back from western Michigan to Chicago. But it’s what I’m currently driving that is currently fascinating me. It’s hard to pin down what the GT is. The name Gran Turismo conjures up notions of large two door coupes effortlessly transporting rich playboys across a golden 60′s era European countryside. The BMW 550 GT challenges the notion of what a GT should be with 5,000 lbs and a multi-stage hatchback. The GT is inspired more by a first class aircraft cabin than the sex on wheels its forebears were drawn from. It’s at this moment that I realize I’m literally driving the future as I leave the past at the Gingerman Roadcourse.

The 550 GT was born both from tireless consumer research and what BMW felt was a new and soon to be burgeoning segment. The thinking is that a segment of the car buying public will slowly grow tired of the downsides of the SUV and even the crossover. The vulgarity of the SUV and the inherent tradeoffs of the crossover would slowly become obvious and consumers would look to something more refined and better performing. If it sounds like I’m talking about a traditional wagon, I might as well be. But BMW has built wagons for 30 years and while some argue that’s truly the answer, the strategists and designers in Munich had something else in mind.

Why not create a vehicle that combined the performance and efficiency benefits of a wagon with higher ride height that consumers have become accustom to? But the GT is more than that. Behind it all is a design dedicated to transporting people and things as elegantly as possible. From the perfectly judged step-in to the individual rear seats (a three seat configuration is optional) BMW has created a car that exudes ease as well as opulence. It offers the versatility of a hatchback while giving a buyer the look of something more sleek and sophisticated.

But lets get the cards on the table. This is not a 5 Series wagon. The notion of buying a vehicle that can handle like a sport sedan while hauling the kids and the dog is simply lost on the GT. To put it simply it stops, goes and handles like a slightly smaller F01 7 Series. And in turn the driving experience is slightly different than any BMW wagon from the past 30 years. It truly is a new vehicle. A niche within a niche that takes luxurious versatility to the extreme and delivers a level o comfort and technology far above what E60 5 Series wagon owners would know.

The 550 GT comes equipped with the familiar twin turbo V8 seen in everything from the new F10 5 Series to the F01 7 Series. Pumping out 400 hp and 450 lb. of torque, it moves the 5,000 lb. GT from 0-60 in 5.4 seconds. Yet where the 750i we tested last year averaged 24 mpg on the highway we struggled to get 21 in the GT in the real world. Officially the figures are hardly different with the 7 rated at 22 mpg and the GT at 21 mpg. Our guess is the weight of the 5er GT (at 5000 lbs it’s 500 lbs heavier than the 750i) is the culprit.

As mentioned the driving experience of the 550 GT is quite similar to the new 7. There is a lack of feel prevalent in the steering that would alarm an E46 3 Series owner. Is it wrong for the intended market? Likely not. The amount of isolation allows for a feeling of gliding over pavement and expansion joints that you typically cannot achieve in a performance sedan. The important thing is that there is still feedback and the GT can easily out-handle almost any crossover on the road.

But because of the isolation the GT simply devours miles on the highway and is as good at long distance cruising as the 7 Series. In fact we could go one better and call this the ultimate long distance cruiser currently in BMW’s fleet. With the higher seating position and increased versatility it’s an ideal way to go cross continent in style and ease.

Adding to this is the way that speed seems almost irrelevant. The GT doesn’t seem to know triple digit drama. It does high speeds with nothing more than slightly increased wind noise.

Handling is surprisingly good with the sport package. While steering feel is lacking there is still plenty of grip. Yes BMW tuned in isolation but they didn’t tune out the performance. Body roll around corners is much more sedan like than what you’d feel in an X5. In fact performance in general was surprisingly good considering the mass and the ride height. While it’s not quite in par with the 7 Series sedan, it’s close enough that most buyers won’t detect a trade-off.

Inside there’s little question that this car (yes according to BMW it is a car and not an SAV) is entirely based on the 7 Series. Switch gear, steering wheels and buttons are carried over from the ultimate BMW. All the technology offering in the 7 (you can read about it in detail in our F01 7 Series review) is either standard or optional on the GT.

It all begs the question, is this a tall 7 Series or a bigger 5 Series wagon? Based on what we know about the construction of the car (from both BMW and our own experiences crawling around the thing) it seems that the GT is as much F01 7 than F10 5 Series. Yes the new 5er also shares the 7 Series platform and technology but based on what we know it would seem not nearly as much as the GT.

Is this a bad thing? For the intended market not at all. In fact what BMW has created in the 550 GT competes well against the 7 Series. You could call it the 7 Series wagon we’ve never had. And at $83,400 as tested it’s certainly priced that way.

We’d love to tear apart the GT for being overwrought, overweight and something no one asked for. But if you look at the car, drive it and critically think about what BMW is trying to do with it, you can’t help but appreciate the result. BMW has created a car that defies categorization while making you completely rethink what we know a car to be. In the end we can’t help but look at the GT as the future of versatile transpiration. Yes it’s expensive and yes it’s as far removed from the 2002tii as BMW has ever been (X6 aside). But the world is a different place. BMW as a brand is trying to remain focused on it’s core competencies while branching out into what it feels are future markets. After spending a week with the GT it’s clear that this is the future. It doesn’t signal an end to BMW creating incredible products that cater to enthusiasts. But it does signify a brand and a company that are increasingly being bold about new markets and new products.

As I wrap-up my drive from Gingerman raceway and pass into Chicago and the GT settles into the urban crawl and I pull up to a light on Lake Shore drive overlooking the city. Turning my head to the right to look out at a dark Lake Michigan I notice a the driver of the Porsche Cayenne giving me a thumbs up. Yes the world has changed and BMW seems to have seen it coming.

BMW is rolling out the latest iteration of its new 550 GT. With the 550i and the 535i already out, it’s not time for all wheel drive and diesels options to bow. In the US that means we will be seeing xDrive options for both the 550i and 535i. The diesels will not be available in the US at this time.

Official Release: BMW, the world’s leading manufacturer of premium cars, is consistently enlarging its wide range of all-wheel-drive models. Starting in June and, respectively, September 2010, all engine variants of the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo will also be available with intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive technology. And also starting in September, the BMW 740d xDrive will become the top diesel in the luxury sedan class to feature this innovative drive system.

The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo combines elegance, spaciousness, comfort and variability in a truly unique car concept – and now this combination offering supreme motoring comfort is becoming even more thrilling and overwhelming. First, starting in June 2010, customers will have the choice of two versions of the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo featuring BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive technology. In both the BMW 530d xDrive Gran Turismo and the BMW 550i xDrive Gran Turismo, permanent, electronically masterminded all-wheel drive ensures the appropriate distribution of drive power front-to-rear in every situation. Then, following in September 2010, the BMW 535d xDrive Gran Turismo and the BMW 535i xDrive Gran Turismo will round off the engine range, helping to give the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo even greater and more versatile character within the premium segment through BMW xDrive technology.

Making its debut in April at Auto China Beijing 2010, the BMW 550i xDrive Gran Turismo is powered by a supreme V8 boasting BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and High Precision Injection. Displacing 4.4 litres, this outstanding eight-cylinder delivers maximum output of 300 kW/407 hp all the way from 5,500 – 6,400 rpm as well as peak torque of 600 Newton-metres/442 lb-ft maintained consistently between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm.

This superior torque coming in at an early point and maintained throughout a broad speed range is now converted into supreme driving dynamics even more precisely and in even more superior style through BMW xDrive technology, accelerating the car to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds. Top speed is cut off by the engine’s electronic control unit at 250 km/h or 155 mph. Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle, finally, is 11.8 litres/100 km, equal to 23.9 mpg imp, with CO2 emissions amounting to 275 grams per kilometre.

The BMW 550i xDrive Gran Turismo is the first model to combine such intelligent all-wheel drive with the supreme driving dynamics, motoring comfort and efficiency of an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The straight-six diesel engine in the BMW 530d xDrive Gran Turismo likewise represents the latest state-of-the-art in BMW engine development. Displacing 3.0 litres, the engine comes with an all-aluminium crankcase, its turbocharger system featuring variable intake geometry ensuring a superior surge of power and performance tailored harmoniously to all kinds of driving conditions.

Fuel is delivered by the latest generation of piezo-injectors operating at a maximum pressure of 1,800 bar. This gives the engine maximum peak output of 180 kW/245 hp at 4,000 rpm, with torque reaching its peak of 540 Newton-metres/398 lb-ft at just 1,750 rpm.

Benefiting from this kind of power, the BMW 530d xDrive Gran Turismo accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 235 km/h or 146 mph.
At the same time the car combines this sporting performance with average fuel consumption of 6.9 litres/100 kilometres, equal to 40.9 mpg imp, in the EU test cycle. The CO2 rating, finally, is 183 grams per kilometre.

The BMW 535d xDrive Gran Turismo features a second even more powerful representative of the new generation of straight-six BMW diesels. Boasting BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and common rail direct fuel injection, the all-aluminium power unit in this equally outstanding model develops maximum output of 220 kW/300 hp at 4,400 rpm as well as peak torque of 600 Newton-metres/442 lb-ft maintained consistently between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm.

The straight-six gasoline power unit in the BMW 535i xDrive Gran Turismo combines turbocharging, High Precision Injection and variable VALVETRONIC valve management with one another. This unique combination gives the BMW TwinPower Turbo an extremely spontaneous and direct response to the gas pedal. This outstanding response is then further optimised by VALVETRONIC valve management as well as the turbocharger system applying the twin-scroll principle both in the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger to separate the ducts and flow channels of three cylinders at a time.

With its high-tech injection nozzles, High Precision Injection doses fuel with maximum precision, delivering the fuel required into the combustion chambers at a pressure of up to 200 bar.
Displacing 3.0 litres, this outstanding six-cylinder delivers maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp at 5,800 rpm. Peak torque of 400 Newton metres/295 lb-ft, in turn, comes between 1,200 and 5,000 rpm.

With the top-of-the-range BMW 750i xDrive and BMW 750Li xDrive already introducing BMW’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system in the 2010 model year in the 7 Series, the BMW 740d xDrive is making its appearance in September.

With its all-aluminium power unit, the BMW 740d xDrive boasts BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology as well as common-rail direct fuel injection with its piezo-injectors operating at a pressure of up to 2,000 bar. Maximum output, as a result, is 225 kW/306 hp, with peak torque of 600 Newton-metres/442 lb-ft maintained consistently between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm.
Permanent, electronically controlled all-wheel drive ensures exactly the right distribution of engine power under all driving conditions. Precise and quick drive power control, finally, gives this supreme luxury sedan absolutely safe and incomparable driving behaviour at all times.
Originally BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology was conceived for the BMW X models, then being introduced step-by-step in the BMW 5 Series, the BMW 3 Series, and the BMW 7 Series. The big forte of this superior technology is its uniquely precise control and engine management helping to optimise traction on rough surfaces and at the same time deliver supreme driving dynamics to the road.

The system stands out as a particularly intelligent all-wheel-drive technology by distributing drive power through a power divider with an electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch in exactly the right way and properly dosed to the correct axle and wheels with optimum road contact at any given point in time.

Featuring this superior system, BMW xDrive enhances driving stability also in dynamic bends by recognising even the slightest tendency to over- and understeer at an early point and taking appropriate counter-action right away.

As you may have picked up from our recently posts, BMW is being very aggressive with changing to relatively new models across the range this spring. So aggressive in fact that they’ve decided to begin 2011 model year starting with Spring production of most models. Some highlights:

The M3 Competition Package is real and includes 10 mm lower suspension, 19” M3 GTS wheels, remapped Electronic Damping Control and Dynamic Stability Control systems.

X5 now comes with the N55 single turbo inline six

BMW has introduced value packages to the aging 1 and 3 series models

Most models equipped with the twin turbo N54 inline six will be transitioning to the N55 single turbo for 2011.

Most vehicles receive minor changes for MY2011 in the form of options and new or revised packages, but some models are either all-new (for example, the new BMW 5 Series sedan and BMW ALPINA B7) or substantially updated (3 Series Coupe and Convertible). For existing models, what will not change for the start of the MY2011 are base Manufacturer Suggested Retail Prices. You can get all the details for the entire range in the official release below:

BMW NA to Extend “Value Packages” for 1 and 3 Series Models

Official Release: In 2009, BMW introduced a “Value Package” – a $0.00 (No Charge) option that included leather upholstery and the integrated iPod adapter on the 5 Series and 328i/xi Sedans. As expected, the Value Package proved to be very popular, and as such, the concept is being extended to additional models. The $0.00 Value Package again includes leather upholstery and the iPod adapter as its key components but may also include several additional options, depending on the model.

BMW NA Creates New “Convenience Package” Available for 1 and 3 Series

Throughout 2009 BMW spent time talking to Dealers and Client Advisors about possible ways to improve our option offering and the value of our package structure. Based on this feedback from Dealers and Client Advisors on, BMW has developed “Convenience Package” for the 1 and 3 Series for MY 2011. This package brings considerable value to a number of options that share the theme of Convenience and are typically ordered together anyway. The Convenience Package content varies depending on the model but always includes the Alarm System, Comfort Access (keyless entry) and Park Distance Control. It retails for as low as $1,000 on the 135i Coupe and Convertible.

Beginning with MY2011 production, most models currently utilizing the twin turbo inline 6 cylinder N54 engine will switch to the new single twin-scroll inline 6 cylinder N55 engine. The new engine shares the same aluminum block as the previous engine but now uses a new cylinder head with BMW VALVETRONIC combined with a single twin scroll type turbo to deliver faster response and more efficiency. The performance figures remain the same at 300hp and 300 lb-ft torque but the efficiency improves by an impressive 7%. The new engine will be installed in the 135i Coupe and Convertible, the 335i Sedan, Coupe and Convertible, the new 535i Sedan when it arrives later this year, the 535i Gran Turismo arriving this spring and finally, the X6 xDrive35i.

The 300hp version of the twin-turbo N54 engine will continue to be offered in the Z4 sDrive35i and upgraded versions of the N54 will power the 740i/Li, Z4 sDrive35is, and the 335is Coupe/Convertible.

1 Series Coupe/Convertible

The 2011 BMW 1 Series Coupe goes on sale this April with several improvements. In addition to the Value and Convenience Packages described above, the Cold Weather Package has been enhanced with a heated steering wheel and the retail price has been increased $150 from $600 to $750. A Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces the HiFi System Professional with no change in retail price ($875). In line with the very sporty nature of the 135i Coupe/Convertible, the 7-speed Double Clutch Transmission (DCT) replaces the STEPTRONIC automatic transmission with an option price of $1,575. The STEPTRONIC 6 speed automatic transmission will continue to be available on the 128i Coupe/Convertible for a retail price of $1,375.
Base MSRP (including $875 Destination & Handling) for all the 1 Series models remain unchanged for MY2011. The 128i Coupe and 135i Coupe start at $30,025 and $36,925, respectively. The 128i Convertible and 135i Convertible start at $35,075 and $41,225, respectively.

3 Series Sedan

The 2011 BMW 3 Series Sedan goes on sale this spring, and each model features changes worthy of mention. Headlining the news is BMW’s all-new 300hp inline-6 engine for the 335i Sedan. BMW’s enthusiast-celebrated 6-speed manual transmission remains standard, and the 6-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission remains optional for $1,375. New shift paddles (left-shift down, right-shift up) for the STEPTRONIC may be added to the Sport steering wheel for $100 when the $2,150 Sport Package is ordered.
For the first time since its introduction, the BMW 335d Sedan is now available with the

M Sport Package for $3,750. On all 3 Series models, the optional Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces BMW’s HiFi Professional System.

The 328i Sedan and 335i Sedan start at $34,025 and $41,475, respectively, including $875 Destination & Handling. The 328i xDrive Sedan and 335i xDrive Sedan start at $36,025 and $43,475, respectively, including Destination & Handling. The 335d Sedan featuring BMW Advanced Diesel technology with BluePerformance starts at $44,825, including the 6-speed automatic transmission and Destination & Handling.

3 Series Sports Wagon

The 2011 3 Series Sports Wagon goes on sale this spring with an MSRP of $36,575 for the 328i Sports Wagon, and $38,575 for the 328i xDrive (all-wheel drive) Sports Wagon. New for MY2011 is the $2,350 Convenience Package, which includes Alarm System, Comfort Access, ultrasonic Park Distance Control, and BMW’s Xenon adaptive headlights. On all
3 Series models, the optional Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces BMW’s HiFi Professional System. Also for 2011, Vermillion Red exterior paint replaces Barbera Red, and Deep Sea Blue replaces Monaco Blue metallic exterior paint.

3 Series Coupe

BMW has substantially updated the 3 Series Coupe for model year 2011. Headlining the changes are new headlights and tail lights, a new hood and kidney grille, new side skirts, new wheels, and new front and rear fascias. On all 3 Series models, the optional Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces BMW’s HiFi Professional System. Also, as part of the update, BMW has made new Bamboo Anthracite Wood trim available on the interior.

Perhaps the biggest news for enthusiast coupe drivers is the arrival of the BMW 335is Coupe. This high-performance model features BMW’s award-winning twin-turbocharged inline-6 (N54), with output of 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. A special overboost function permits a temporary torque increase to 370 lb-ft. Cooling the extra heat generated by the increased power is a standard oil cooler and an extra water cooler (radiator), as well as the enormous front air ducts included with the standard M Sport upgrades. An emotionally charged sport exhaust system has been fitted to perfectly capture the serious driving intentions of the 335is. Black kidney grilles, mirror caps, and Shadowline exterior trim lead the eyes to the rear where a rear diffuser with a body-color and black insert is located. Inside, the 335is Coupe receives a full M Sport enhancement with unique trim and badges. Those enthusiasts who prefer not to have it will appreciate the ability to delete the standard glass moonroof. For the first time on the 3 Series (excluding M3) the Double Clutch Transmission (DCT) will be available on the 335is as a $1,575 option.
The 328i Coupe and 335i Coupe start at $37,075 and $43,525, respectively, including $875 Destination & Handling. Under the skin, the 335i Convertible has been fitted with the new “N55” twin-scroll turbocharged inline-6 engine, and may be coupled to the standard 6-speed manual or optional 6-speed automatic transmission. In addition to the new Vermillion Red and Deep Sea Blue exterior colors, Mineral White Metallic exterior paint will be available on the Convertible starting in June. On all 3 Series models, the optional Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces BMW’s HiFi Professional System. Also, as part of the update, BMW has made new Bamboo Anthracite Wood trim available on the interior.

Convertible drivers with a love for dynamic performance will be excited to learn of the new BMW 335is Convertible. This high-performance model features BMW’s award-winning twin-turbocharged inline-6 (N54), with output of 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. A special overboost function permits a temporary torque increase to 370 lb-ft. Sport suspension and a sport exhaust system have been fitted to properly enhance the driving experience. Black kidney grilles, mirror caps, and Shadowline exterior trim lead the eyes to the rear where a rear diffuser with a body-color and black insert is located. 5 Series Sedan

Long the segment leader in the premium midsize sedan class, the new 6th generation BMW 5 Series Sedan is set to arrive in the US market in early summer of 2010. The stylish MY2011 BMW 5 Series combines athletic looks, superb driving dynamics, and innovative comfort and safety features into an executive express that promises to remain at the top of the segment.
With the longest wheelbase in the class, a long and sleek hood, short overhangs, and a coupe-like roofline, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan stands out clearly from the competition. Overall, the aesthetic looks of the car are achieved through balanced proportions. Design features emblematic of BMW are to be found at the front with its kidney grille inclined slightly forward, in the stylish and elegant side view of the car, and at the muscular rear end.

Within the interior, precise functionality and a fresh ambience come together in perfect harmony, unmistakable style, and clear orientation to the driver.

Highly advanced drivetrain and suspension technologies combine agile handling for the driver and a high standard of riding comfort for passengers. When equipped with the Sport Package, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan includes Adaptive Drive, which encompasses Driving Dynamics Control, Electronic Damper Control, and Active Roll Stabilization. Optional Integral Active Steering will virtually extend or shorten the vehicle’s wheelbase for improved stability at high speeds and enhanced agility at lower speeds.

At launch, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan will be available in the US with one V-8 and one inline-6 gasoline engine. The top-of-the-range BMW 550i arrives with BMW’s “reverse-flow” V-8 engine featuring twin turbochargers and High Precision direct injection for maximum output of 400 hp. The new inline-6 of the BMW 535i features a single twin-scroll turbocharger, High Precision direct injection, and, for the first time, VALVETRONIC throttle-less intake technology. It delivers a maximum output of 300 hp and 300 lb-ft. The 535i and 550i will be available with a choice of 6-speed manual transmission, BMW’s new 8-speed automatic transmission, or new “Sport Automatic” 8-speed.

Later, the BMW 528i will debut with a 240 hp inline-6 featuring lightweight magnesium-aluminum construction and VALVETRONIC throttle-less intake technology for efficiency and unparalleled responsiveness.

The new MY2011 BMW 5 Series will make its North American debut at the New York International Auto Show in late March 2010. Pricing and options will be released closer to market launch date.

5 Series Gran Turismo

The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo made its production debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show last fall and went on sale in December 2009 as a 2010 model. Therefore, it continues as a 2010 model this year, but there is still some news to report. In April 2010, the original BMW 550i Gran Turismo will be joined by the new 535i Gran Turismo, featuring BMW’s exciting new “N55” inline-6 engine. As the 550i Gran Turismo helped introduce the new 8-speed automatic transmission to the BMW line-make, the new 535i Gran Turismo will also feature the 8-speed automatic as standard. 0-60 mph acceleration will require only 6.2 seconds for the 535i Gran Turismo (5.4 seconds for 550i Gran Turismo). Compared to the 550i Gran Turismo, the 535i Gran Turismo features unique light-alloy wheel choices and forgoes some standard equipment, including auto-dimming mirrors, universal garage door opener, and Navigation system. Each 5 Series Gran Turismo model receives two new available exterior colors starting this spring, including Milano Beige and Damast Red. MSRP starts at $56,875 for the 535i Gran Turismo and $64,775 for the 550i Gran Turismo, including Destination & Handling.

5 Series Sports Wagon

The BMW 5 Series Sports Wagon will continue through to the end of production in April as a 2010 model. The 535i xDrive Sports Wagon starts at $56,825 including $875 Destination & Handling.

6 Series Coupe & Convertible

The BMW 6 Series Coupe and Convertible will continue as a 2010 models until the fall of 2010. The MY2010 650i Coupe and Convertible start at $79,325 and $86,425, respectively, including $875 Destination & Handling.
7 Series Sedan

The 2011 BMW 7 Series Sedan line that goes on sale this April will be the widest range ever in its 23 year history, comprising a total of 11 models. Along with the 750i xDrive, the 750Li xDrive, and the 760Li introduced last fall for MY2010, the 7 Series line will be supplemented by several new models and enhancements for 2011.

740i and 740Li with twin-turbo Inline 6 Cylinder Power

The new MY2011 BMW 740i and BMW 740Li achieve a remarkable balance of power, efficiency, and sporty driving dynamics. Both models will go on sale in the United States as 2011 models in spring 2010. The 740i models feature BMW’s internationally acclaimed twin-turbocharged inline-6 engine (N54) with an output of 315 horsepower.

Both models will be available with the full complement of well-known 7 Series options and packages, including the M Sport Package, Driver Assistance Package, Luxury Seating Packages, Rear Entertainment Package, and even the BMW Individual Composition Package.

The MY2011 740i and 740Li start at $71,025 and $75,425, respectively. All pricing includes $875 Destination & Handling.
The V-8 powered 750i, 750Li, 750i xDrive and 750Li xDrive

In addition to the many improvements announced for the beginning of MY2010. The MY2011 750 models benefit from additional equipment enhancements. The Convenience Package (a $1,700 value), which includes soft close doors, electric trunk opening/closing and Comfort Access, is now standard. The Top-View function that gives a complete camera view around the car while reversing has been added to the Camera Package. The package price has been adjusted from $750 to $1,200 based on the additional functionality. Active Roll Stabilization is no longer standard on xDrive models but is included in the optional
M Sport Package.

The MY2011 750i and 750Li start at $82,875 and $86,775, respectively. The 750i xDrive and 750Li xDrive start at $85,875 and $89,775, respectively. All pricing includes $875 Destination & Handling.
BMW ALPINA B7

The 2011 BMW ALPINA B7 sedan will join BMW’s North American product range as the most dynamic 7 Series model. The BMW ALPINA B7 represents the second generation of ALPINA automobiles based on the BMW 7 Series to be offered in the US. The first BMW ALPINA B7 was offered as a limited edition for the 2007 and 2008 model years. Newly interpreted and based on the current BMW 7 Series platform, the B7 will again set the benchmark in terms of performance, refinement, technology, luxury and exclusivity.

The B7 sedan is equipped with BMW’s twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter, all-aluminum, High Precision Direct Injection V-8 engine which has been enhanced by ALPINA and is capable of producing 500 (373kW) horsepower and 516 lb-ft (700Nm) of torque. This rear-wheel drive performance/luxury Sedan achieves 0-60 mph in 4.5 sec.

Both short- and long-wheelbase models will be offered. The BMW ALPINA B7 will go on sale at authorized BMW Centers in Spring of 2010. Pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

The Range topping Twin Turbo V12 powered 760Li

The all-new BMW 760Li Sedan went on sale in fall of 2009 featuring the latest iteration in BMW’s decades-long history of harmonious V12 engines. This newest BMW V12 produces 535 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque with help from twin turbochargers and High Precision Direct Injection. The outcome is a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds in a stylish, luxurious package. The long list of standard features and amenities ensures the comfort of each occupant.

While the 760Li will not change Model Years until September, the top-view function has been added as standard. The MY2010 760Li Sedan starts at $137,425 including $875 Destination & Handling.

ActiveHybrid 7

On the heels of the ActiveHybrid X6, BMW announced the production versions of the all-new BMW ActiveHybrid 7, which also made its US premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show in December 2009. The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 will reach American shores late in the second quarter of 2010 as a 2011 model. Based on the 5th-generation BMW 7 Series, this unique car sets new standards for performance and efficiency in the premium luxury class.

The symbiosis of a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine with a 3-phase synchronous electric motor gives the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 a combined output of 455 hp and maximum torque of 515 lb-ft from 2000 – 3000 rpm. Power is transmitted via an 8-speed automatic transmission with the electric motor positioned between the engine and the torque converter. The electric motor receives its supply of energy from a lithium-ion battery developed specifically for this automobile.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 accelerates to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, while delivering fuel economy approximately 15% better than the 750i and 750Li.

The MY2011 ActiveHybrid 7 and ActiveHybrid 7L start at $103,175 and $107,075, respectively. All pricing includes $875 Destination & Handling.

X6 Sports Activity Coupe

The BMW X6 enters MY2011 with both increased efficiency and performance facilitated by the addition of an 8-speed automatic transmission and Brake Energy Regeneration. The result is that X6 xDrive35i accelerates from 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds (reduced by 0.2 seconds) while the X6 xDrive50i gets to 60mph in 5.2 seconds (reduced by 0.1 seconds).
Option changes include the addition of Lane Departure Warning and Active Cruise Control as stand-alone options for $950 and $2,400 respectively.
M5 Sedan

The car that invented the category of ultra-high performance sport sedan back in 1985 takes a hiatus for MY2011. A new M5 Sedan based on the upcoming 6th generation
5 Series is planned but not ready to be unveiled yet.

M6 Coupe and Convertible

The BMW M6 Coupe and Convertible will continue as a 2010 models until the fall of 2010. The MY2010 M6 Coupe and Convertible start at $103,225 and $109,025, respectively, including $875 Destination & Handling.

X5 M and X6 M

The BMW X5 M and X6 M went on sale last fall as 2010 models in the United States. This spring they become 2011 models.

Side-View Camera was added to the Driver Assistance Package. The Side view camera adds a significant addition to the outward visibility of the X5 M and X6 M, enhancing customer security in tight places. With this addition, the Driver Assistance Package retail price increases $400 from $1,800 to $2,200.

The MY2011 X5 M and X6 M start at $86,375 and $89,875, respectively, including $875 Destination & Handling.

And while we at BF think it’s a substantially more impressive car in person and behind the wheel, it’s hard to quite get that across with just words and pictures. So BMW has created a mini-documentary around the development of the new 5 Series GT that helps tell the story of the car and the ideas behind it.

The North American International Auto Show in Detroit will see the World debut of the BMW Concept ActiveE and BMW Z4 sDrive35is, as well as the North American unveiling of the twin-turbocharged inline-6 engine version of the BMW 740i and 740Li Sedans and the six-cylinder turbocharged version of the BMW 535i Gran Turismo.
BMW Concept ActiveE

BMW Concept ActiveE is the latest electric vehicle project under BMW Group’s initiative to produce vehicles that explore solutions to minimize environmental impact while preserving the dynamic driving experience for which BMW has long been known. The BMW Concept ActiveE will follow the all-electric MINI E as the second large-scale electric vehicle test program to be conducted in the hands of interested customers.

The BMW Group presents yet another milestone along the way to achieving CO2-free mobility. The BMW Concept ActiveE provides a taste of a purely electrically powered BMW. Focused on the requirements of practical use, the study is based on the BMW 1 Series Coupe and embodies the outstanding agility and characteristic driving pleasure of the 1 Series with the added dimension of emissions-free driving.

The BMW Concept ActiveE highlights the continuation of its research and development activities in the field of electro-mobility by the BMW Group and allows for the exploration of new vehicle packaging solutions and components which will be crucial to the success of the Megacity Vehicle. The integration of drive components within the existing vehicle package of the BMW 1 Series Coupe offers the opportunity to provide four full-size seats and a luggage compartment with a capacity of approximately 7 cu ft. (200 liters). The motor, specially developed for the model and located in the rear axle, delivers 170 hp and provides maximum torque of 184 lb-ft. It accelerates the vehicle from 0-60 mph in approx. 8.5 seconds.

The electric drive system draws its energy from new, advanced lithium-ion battery pack developed jointly especially for the BMW Concept ActiveE by BMW and cooperation partner SB LiMotive. They enable a range of approximately 100 miles in everyday use. An intelligent battery management system helps achieve this range largely independently of external climatic conditions. Additionally, the charging period required for the lithium-ion batteries is very short. On the European power grid, the battery pack can be fully charged in just three hours at a wall box with a current of 50 ampere at 230/240 volts. In North America, using a high-current (32 ampere continuous) residential wall box, the charge time is about 4.5 hours.

The BMW Concept ActiveE embodies a whole new dimension of mobility purely powered by electricity. The dynamic potential and high torque of the drive system, along with the rear-wheel drive which is a hallmark of the brand, guarantees a driving experience befitting the Ultimate Driving Machine – but without any CO2 emissions. An impressive range of functions and a high level of suitability for everyday use are both part of this concept, which defines electro-mobility in true BMW style.

BMW Z4 sDrive35is

Combining classic proportions with modern features, the BMW Z4 Roadster enjoys the top spot in its market segment. Now, the new BMW Z4 sDrive35is distills the Roadster’s performance potential to produce one of BMW’s fastest and best-handling Roadsters ever.

The latest Z4 model is characterized by instantaneous response to the accelerator pedal, fantastic sounds, and a free-revving spirit. The engine features increased intake air-flow and increased boost pressure to provide more power with the same standard of efficiency. The combination of twin low-mass turbochargers and High Precision direct injection offers a level of performance which a naturally-aspirated engine would only be able to provide using more cylinders and larger displacement.

The turbocharger system developed for the engine of the new BMW Z4 sDrive35is maintains a high output throughout the entire rev range. Nominal peak torque is increased to 332 lb-ft from available from1,500 rpm to 4,500 rpm. Maximum output of 335 hp is delivered at 5,900 rpm.

The enhanced engine management system of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is includes an electronically-controlled overboost function which briefly increases torque under full load by another 37 lb-ft. This temporary torque peak of 369 lb-ft gives the car significantly better acceleration. The BMW Z4 sDrive35is will complete the sprint from standstill to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds (preliminary). Top speed of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is is limited electronically to 155 mph.

BMW 740i and 740Li Sedans

The BMW 740i and 740Li Sedans will feature BMW’s award-winning inline-6 engine that is an example of BMW’s EfficientDynamics engineering philosophy. The engine produces V-8 power on six-cylinder fuel consumption; the new BMW 740i and BMW 740Li achieve a remarkable balance of power, efficiency, and sporty driving dynamics.

A keystone of BMW’s EfficientDynamics philosophy is “virtual displacement,” the notion that BMW’s modern engines of smaller displacement can equal or exceed the outputs of traditional engines of larger displacement and more cylinders. Virtual displacement provides the power of a larger engine with the fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions signature of a smaller engine.

The 2011 BMW 740i and 740Li feature BMW’s internationally acclaimed twin-turbocharged inline-6 engine with up-rated output of 315 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque from 1600-4500 rpm. All-aluminum construction, High Precision direct fuel injection, Double-VANOS variable camshaft technology, and Brake Energy Regeneration are a few of the technologies used under the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy to place the 740i and 740Li among the most powerful six-cylinder luxury sedans in the world. Delivering power to the rear wheels is BMW’s 6-speed automatic transmission, well-known for fast, smooth gearshifts and an ability to intelligently adapt to the driver’s style.

Befitting a member of BMW’s flagship line, the 740i and 740Li will include a full range of features and option that will enable the newest BMW 7 Series to be tailored to individual tastes.

BMW 535i Gran Turismo with six-cylinder turbocharged engine

The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo combines the attributes of an elegant sedan, a contemporary Sports Activity Vehicle and a classic Gran Turismo, masterfully melded into a single, harmonious vehicle. The six-cylinder turbocharged version of the 535i Gran Turismo will feature a new inline-6 which combines turbocharging, High Precision Injection, and variable VALVETRONIC valve management in one engine for the first time. This unique combination gives BMW’s newest inline-6 a new level of performance and efficiency in the true spirit of BMW EfficientDynamics.

The new six-cylinder again displaces 3.0-liters and develops maximum output of 300 hp at 5,800 rpm, with peak torque of 300 lb-ft available all the way from 1,200–5,000 rpm. This is the same level of performance as the current 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder but with the innovation of twin-scroll technology and the integration of VALVETRONIC, this new engine will be even more fuel efficient. Both the responsiveness and efficiency of the 535i Gran Turismo will be further improved with the addition of BMW’s new 8-speed automatic transmission. Benefitting from this kind of power, the BMW 535i Gran Turismo accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in just 6.2 seconds.

The 2011 Z4 Drive35is, the 2011 740i and 740Li Sedans, as well as the 535i Gran Turismo six-cylinder will arrive at authorized BMW Centers in Spring 2010.

The BMW press conference will take place on Monday, January 11, 2010 from 11:50am – 12:15pm EST.

The 2010 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo presents itself as an SUV that is not an SUV, a sport wagon that is not a sport wagon, a sedan that is not a sedan and lastly a coupe that is not a coupe. If it is none of those things, then what is it? That is the question a lot of people ask and there is no clear answer; it is a little bit of all of them and nothing like anything that has come before.

A different kind of car deserves a different type of review. That is exactly what we have done here at BimmerFile. For our first take on the new 2010 BMW 5 Series GT we decided to complete a review from different perspectives: from the driver, the passenger to casual onlookers and even the enthusiast. We are letting it loose tonight, the eve of the US on sale date! Read on and you’ll see what we have been working on along with the full photo set. As always we would love to hear your comments on this latest of controversial vehicles from BMW.

Driver’s Perspective

We have been and always will be about the drive here at BF, some of us love tech but in the end we love BMWs for the way they are engaging to drive. As you sit behind the wheel of the 5 GT you immediately feel the similarities with the 750i, as they share much of the same suspension underpinnings, wheelbase and interior electronics (gauge cluster, LCD screens, technology options). When equipped with Dynamic Driving Control the driver can select a desired suspension setting based on mood or even just road conditions, Sport for the twisties or Comfort on a rough patch of interstate. With the launch motor in the US being the powerful twin turbo V8 (400 hp/450 lb-ft) the 5 GT effortlessly reaches your cruising speed, an all new turbo inline-six will come spring time (xDrive to launch next fall alongside the 5 Series). Steering is surprisingly engaging and the turning radius is like that of a shorter car-thanks in part to the optional Integral Active Steering our cars were equipped with.

The shifts are smooth and the 8-speed transmission never hunts or pecks between gears. It is seemingly always in the right gear at the right time when in Auto mode. The transmission offers a Sport mode and the ability for the driver to manually select gears, both of which are equally compliant and benefit from the ability of the transmission to downshift by multiple gears (go from 6 to 4 and it will take you right there).

Everything about the car is great from a day-to-day driving standpoint. It soaks up highway miles, it is easy to park (thanks to standard sensors), features eco-friendly brake energy regeneration and has good visibility due to the higher seating position and large amounts of glass. It is a pleasure to drive and for the most part it likes to be driven.

The one thing the drive can be knocked for is that the rear end begins to feel choppy/imprecise when pushed hard into curves with rough pavement (in Sport). This is more than likely due to the air suspension being firmed up to create less roll and better handling while also battling the 4400 lbs. this vehicle weighs in at. As an aside- the GT is heavy but under every other circumstance it never feels it and braking is what we all expect from a BMW, a hard pedal and no issues.

Passenger’s Perspective

The interior of this vehicle builds upon the latest 7 series as far as design, fit and finish are concerned. As a passenger you immediately realize that as you open the frameless doors. The cabin has a modern luxury to it, from the ambient accent lighting to the variety of high quality wood trim (The matte choice is a personal favorite). The “B” pillars feature the same trim lines and materials as the dash, wrapping you in luxury. Everything you touch has a feel of quality with suppleness and a weight one would expect in a luxury vehicle.

The base level front and rear seats are comfortable. BMW has made the step to leather seating surfaces with the base “Dakota” leather in this vehicle. The sides of the seat bottom, the door panels and other non-contact during seating locations feature high-grade leatherette. If you had not read that last bit of information here you would not even know it, the transition and materials look great. Full “Napa” leather is an option and it adds a more supple and smoother grain to all seating and door surfaces.

Back seat passengers are provided adjustable seating even in the base model. Seats are adjustable fore and aft as well as for seat back recline angle. The rear center seat should only be used for a child but can accommodate an adult in emergency situations (that is not something one would enjoy from a comfort standpoint). There is an optional rear luxury-seating package that adds electronic controls and a multitude of other features to the rear seats. This package creates the feel of flying in the first class section (deletes the middle seat and adds a luxurious center rest/console) for rear seat passengers and may even out duel its sibling, the 750i, in this area. Overhead is the enormous panoramic glass roof that combined with the large side windows creates an extremely open and bright feel to the cabin.

Optional rear seat entertainment adds screens to the backs of the front seats and wireless headphones; all that is missing is a microwave to make popcorn.

Onlooker’s Perspective

Never when reviewing a car or driving a vehicle (maybe excluding my modded ’73 Beetle) were so many questions asked about it by people in passing. From gas stations to grocery stores people stopped to look at the 5 GT. Initially it was surprising but it made sense because the general public usually is not aware of future product offerings, especially from BMW so to them this vehicle was something out of the ordinary.

The vast majority of casual onlookers found the car to be attractive from the outside and blown away by the inside. The trunk/hatch concept was appealing to everyone- with most saying “Why hasn’t someone created that before?” About 25% of people found the back end to be too busy but also said that it did not take away from the rest of the car; even though they did not like the back it would not prevent them from buying it.

In travels with the 5 GT its path crossed with that of a small group of BMW aficionados. It was pleasantly surprising to hear that the vast majority of these enthusiasts (already familiar with the 5 GT from photos) stated that the car looked good in person and that photos just do not do it justice. While not all of them liked the look of it from the outside they all loved the inside. One person even commented that while it is a big vehicle it is not an SUV and the more SUVs that we can get off the road the better- making this GT is a step in the right direction.

Conclusions

For what it is, the 5 Series Gran Turismo is a great vehicle. It serves a niche market well and is a true BMW at heart. The interior space, flexibility for cargo and overall execution are well thought out and truly are assets to the car as a whole. The looks are controversial (in the current design climate at BMW this is actually a good thing) and to some it is downright grotesque. Is this a design for everyone? Well, no and it shouldn’t be. The best way to summarize the 5 GT is to tell a short story about one of the target markets.

There is a family of 4, a mom, a dad (both in their 40’s), a 10-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl. Dad enjoys his cars with a sporty ride, while mom needs room to transport the kids and real-estate clients from here to there. Both adults desire luxury, safety and quality in their cars. Dad works long hours at the office so most of the time his car is used for solo driving, he drives a 335i Coupe and enjoys it immensely. His big complaint is that he has to rent a truck every time he needs something from Home Depot that does not fit in his E92 or his wife’s E90.

Mom refuses to be seen in a mini-van as they are something she never pictured herself to drive (it is just not her). She dislikes SUVs because she feels they are excessive and just one more part of the “bigger is better” American take on things. She does admit that she had an X3 loaner once while her car was in for routine maintenance and enjoyed the higher line of sight it offered. She rather not drive a sport wagon for the boxy look and stigma they have, so she has been carting the kids around in a 328xi sedan. She longs for something bigger now that the kids are approaching their teenage years but there is nothing to meet her needs- well that is until now and the BMW 5 GT.

Dad would still enjoy the ride (when he gets to drive it) and have plenty of room to fit most things from HD in the back. Mom would have her specific criteria met with plenty of room for the kids and ample luxury for her clientele. This is a match made in Germany; Dingolfing to be exact.

Editor’s note: The rear trunk/hatch is nice when you have people in the car and you need to run to grab something. Just pop the trunk rather than the full gate and your passengers remain unaffected- did this a few times!

We have heard from reliable sources that BMW along with ZF have been developing the newest 8 speed transmission to also work with Stop/Start. Stop/Start is a technology developed to allow the engine to turn off automatically when the car is stopped for a period of time (at a traffic light) and the engine will turn back on when the accelerator is depressed.

Currently, this technology has been reserved for 4 cylinder engines coupled with a manual transmission in markets outside the US. This new offering would allow the use of Stop/Start in vehicles with larger displacements and of course in different markets that prefer the automatic.

Earlier in the year we learned that BMW will be transitioning its current lineup of 6 speed autos to 8 speeds by model year 2013. The 8 speed debuted in the 760Li and will be featured in the 5 GT as well as the 5 series this spring. There has been no set date as to when this new feature will make it’s debut but one can expect it first in the 7 Series hybrid this spring and other models after.

While we busily complete our first extensive review of the soon to release BMW 550i GT here is a little something to hold you over. Below is snippet of a review completed by our good friend Jonathan Sprira of the Executive Road Warrior (where his complete review can be found) and the BMWCCA.

The 2010 BMW 550i GT is built on the same platform as the new F01 7 Series, introduced last year, and might best be viewed as a kind of 7 Series wagon, despite its 5 Series moniker (clearly Munich agonized about what to call this car) and four-door coupé-like appearance. It’s definitely a niche vehicle with the combination of 7 Series legroom, X5 headroom, and a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine. The GT sits lower to the ground than the X5 or X6 but it’s a bit higher than the 7er.

Expect the 5er GT to be far more popular in Europe, where many families typically have one car that has to serve multiple purposes, versus the U.S., where multiple car ownership is common and the GT’s versatility may therefore not be as highly valued.

We’ve got a special show for you this week. Michael is back from “BMW University” where he drove a number of cars from the MINI E to the new 5er GT. We also have Todd and DB on hand from White Roof Radio to talk about the MINI E, electric cars in general and the new MINI Crossover. That leads into talk about four cylinder diesels and how they relate to both the X1 and the MINI Countryman (since theoretically it’s the same engine). IMHO, it’s our best show yet.
