New M cars don’t get introduced very often. They don’t even happen every year. Yet today we’re treated to the debut of two of them in the 3rd generation M6 coupe and convertible. With it comes that wonderful feeling of laying your eyes on a new M car (even virtually) for the first time. And perhaps even better, taking a look at the full specifications. So with that said, we present you a first look at the 3rd generation BMW M6 by the numbers.

World Premiere: BMW M6 Coupe and Convertible

MotoringFile Sections: //M6\\, F12 6 Series Convertible, F13 6 Series Coupe, Official News Feb 11th, 2012 12 Comments

Introducing The All-New 3rd Generation BMW M6 Coupe and Convertible.

To BMW, February 11th marks the commencement of sales for the all new 2012 F30 3 Series sedan, its bread and butter model. That wasn’t enough for BMW today. BMW M also revealed not one car but two; the M6 Coupe and Convertible.

The third generation M6 builds on the underpinnings of BMW’s highly acclaimed 6 series luxury coupe and convertible. As is customary with M, everything is scrutinized and improved upon to increase the sporting character of the car. Last summer’s premiere of the M5 super-sedan was a tip of the cards as to what the M6 would be packing in terms of performance modification, M Adaptive Rear Differential, M Dual Clutch Transmission and an M Twin Power V8 engine (S63Tü) just to name a few.

The M developed turbo charged V8 with valvetronic variable valve lift churns out a staggering 560hp and 500 ft-lbs of neck snapping torque from 1250-5750 rpms while gaining 30% efficiency, 10% horsepower and 30% torque over its V10 predecessor. The now characteristic M aggressiveness, as first seen with the X5/X6 M models and most recently the 1M and M5, of wide front air intakes and sharp race inspired edges continues with the M6. As a throw back to the original of the same name, the M6 badge is displayed on the black slotted kidney grille.

Advances in Carbon Fiber manufacturing have allowed the Coupe to don an aggressive contoured roof, with the center section being lower than the flanking sides to improve aerodynamics and provide a signature look that is unmistakable. Carbon-Ceramic brakes will be optional for the first time on a BMW M product, featuring massive discs and six piston calipers up front these brakes will be differentiated from the standard M brakes (blue) by the calipers being gold in color.

At launch, both M6 models will only be offered with the 7 speed M Dual Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic. No manual will be available. However, we have learned that it is still under consideration for the US market.

If the base 6 series models and the M5 are any indication of what this car is about we are fairly sure that this time around we will be smitten with the M6. Something that we have longed for.

BMW @ 2011 IAA

We’ve just returned from the Frankfurt IAA and to say that the BMW Hall is overwhelming is an absolute understatement. The scale of BMW’s home auto show venue is immense. Imagine an auto show floor stateside and then think that the size of that entire building is around the size of BMW’s own in Frankfurt- it is that enormous. BMW didn’t disappoint its fans in its presentation of its newest offerings and future concepts; offering a wide range of vehicles, all presented in the ideals of Efficient Dynamics. Our cameras were able to capture it all so be sure to check out the gallery.

BimmerFile Review: 2012 BMW 650i Coupe

MotoringFile Sections: F13 6 Series Coupe, Review Aug 22nd, 2011 7 Comments

The 650i is a big car. And big sporty cars aren’t meant to be able to hustle around the tight roads in Carmel Valley. They are meant to go long distances at triple digit speed while barely breaking a sweat. Yet I sit here almost breathless from a testosterone laced blast east in the 650i through Carmel Valley Rd. Not unlike the physics bending of the X6 M, the 650i defies your expectations of what a large car can do in almost every sense.    Let’s not mince words here. We at BimmerFile didn’t care much for the previous 6 Series coupe. It felt large, numb and ill conceived in many ways. And it wasn’t immediately attractive – the death-knell for a $100k coupe. The F13 650i coupe on the other hand is almost shockingly attractive in person –especially the first time you see it. The car has an aggression and purpose in its form and design language that hasn’t been seen on a large BMW coupe since the E24 6 Series. The creases that run throughout the car add a strict sense of purpose and aggression that might as well be the future recipe for all large German coupes.

Our Alpine White 650i test car came with the highly recommended M Sport package. At $3800 it isn’t cheap. But it gives the 6 Series coupe a bit more bite in the overall look. Likewise the optional 20″ wheels help fill out the arches and manages to give the car an even lower-slung look. The only critic with the M Sport is that it’s purely an appearance package. Performance options such as BMW’s Active Roll Stabilization system (more on that later) are still standalone options.

BMW has just released the first official US video of the new big coupe. The 6 Series will go on sale in September with the N55 equipped 640i and the muscular 650i V8. And a first for the 6, it’ll be available with xDrive in either model.

About BimmerFile

BimmerFile is dedicated to bringing you the most interesting news, links and reviews related to the BMW brand and it's vehicles.

We believe in the old school BMW ownership experience. We believe in garage nights with a six pack and some friends. We believe in 2002s, in E30 M3s and E34 540s with the 6 speed. We believe in progress in both design and engineering but we haven't lost sight of what made the brand and its products great all those years ago. And yes, we believe in the manual transmission.

We long for the days of the wave and for the days of roll-up windows. Yet we love the gadgets on the inside and the xenons on the outside.

In short, we can't get enough of BMWs. This is BimmerFile.
