According to one of our sources the next generation M3 sedan will not be powered by the feared V6 engine. BMW M has been experimenting with various engine configurations for the new generation M3, ranging from a naturally aspirated V8, twin turbo V8 and V6 setups to the much rumored tri-turbo inline 6.

Our source indicates that while the people at M pushed hard for the V6 because of the packaging and performance benefits the board shot it down. The board had a few reasons, namely the idea of a V6 in a BMW (let alone an M) and cost. The bespoke block and setup for the V6 would have required the car increase in price more than they were willing to allow and in the end the engine that fit performance (450 hp) and price-point best was the inline six based off the N55.

While this source has been reliable in the past we are still considering this a rumor as we do not have a second source and due to the significant amount of time before the new M3 will enter production in 2013.

German publication Autobild took the entire current M range (including the ultra rare M3 CRT) to the Sachsenring. The winner? Perhaps unsurprisingly it was the über M3, the new CRT. But what of the standard production models? The F10 M5 bested the lot with a time of 1:38.90. Not bad for a heavy-weight. But it was the race for second that caught out attention.

Official Release: Power, motion, and light inspired American artist Jeff Koons as he worked on the legendary BMW M3 GT2. Bearing his unmistakable style, the entire body of the artwork is adorned with vivid, streamlined colors against a black background, giving the viewer an impression of motion and speed from every angle. But the BMW M3 GT2 Art Car Jeff Koons doesn’t just dazzle on the racetrack, it also exudes dynamism at a scale of 1:18 in its limited-edition miniature version. The metal model is a full-detail reproduction of the original vehicle, for which the artist intentionally selected a contrasting silver interior. The removable hood allows you to see the engine inside, the trunk can also be opened, and the air ducts are easily visible. The cockpit and the lettering on the wheels look just like those of its big brother, and the steerable front axle and plastic sports seatbelts will delight fans of exclusive automobiles. A clear varnish protects the special, brilliantly colored transfers and will keep this designer piece shining for years to come. The edition is limited to 5,000 miniatures, each of which is supplied in its own display case, appealing to automotive enthusiasts and art lovers alike.

High-Speed Automotive Art.

Jeff Koons, who became famous with his stainless-steel balloon animals and massive flower sculptures, corresponded closely with BMW Motorsport and BMW Group Chief Designer Adrian van Hooydonk during 2010, and together with the company’s design and development team he transposed his art onto a real racing vehicle which competed in Le Mans the same year. For the car-loving American artist, the project was a dream come true. “I always thought it would be an honor to design a BMW Art Car,” says Jeff Koons. “I am very happy to join the tradition which was founded by such greats as Calder, Lichtenstein, Stella, and Warhol.” His prolific work with three-dimensional structures predestined Koons to design an Art Car, and by doing so he has continued a decades-long tradition at BMW.

Alexander Calder painted the first BMW in the Art Car Collection in 1975. He was followed by well-known artists such as Frank Stella with his distinctive grid pattern, and pop art icons Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Robert Rauschenberg. The latest predecessors of the Jeff Koons Art Car were designed by David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, and most recently Olafur Eliasson. The latter, a Danish artist, entitled his work “Your mobile expectations: BMW H2R project”, for which he removed the outer shell of a hydrogen-driven prototype and replaced it with a complex skin of steel mesh, shining metal plates, and diverse layers of ice.

The BMW Art Cars, of which there are now no fewer than 17, reflect the cultural and historical development of art, design, and technology.

The BMW M3 GT2 Art Car Jeff Koons at a scale of 1:18 has been available since the beginning of December 2011 from selected BMW dealerships and on the Internet at www.bmw-shop.com.

BMW Motorsport used the 50th BMW Sports Trophy Award Ceremony to announce further details of next year’s programme. The focus is firmly on the return to the DTM after an absence of almost 20 years. However, perhaps more important for the US market, BMW has firmly committed to campaigning it’s RLL ALMS team for 2012.

At the ceremony in the Double Cone building at Munich’s BMW Welt, BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt presented the latest addition to the team of DTM drivers, the newly crowned DTM champion Martin Tomczyk (DE). Tomczyk will join Andy Priaulx (GB), Augusto Farfus (BR) and Bruno Spengler (CA), who have already been confirmed as BMW drivers, behind the wheel of a BMW M3 DTM in the coming season. The BMW Sports Trophy will be even more important next year: The winner of the annual BMW privateer competition will be rewarded with a test day in the BMW M3 DTM from 2012.

Marquardt appeared happy with the progress of preparations ahead of the 2012 curtain-raiser in Hockenheim. He said: “We are right on track. The entire team at BMW Motorsport has been working feverishly since we announced the DTM comeback. As it stands, we have already completed over 15,000 kilometres of testing with the BMW M3 DTM. Every single kilometre is crucial: it is essential to make up ground on our competitors, who have the edge when it comes to experience. We have established a very stable base. The focus next year will be on teasing every last bit of performance out of the car, before development is frozen in March, in accordance with technical regulations. We should be well set up for 2012.”

Speaking at his first public appearance for BMW, Tomczyk said: “This is obviously a very exciting and special evening for me. To meet everyone in the BMW Motorsport family and immediately be accepted as a member of it is absolutely fantastic. I am really looking forward to the new challenge and cannot wait for the season to get started. First, however, I have the tests in Monteblanco to look forward to, where I will be let loose on the track in the BMW M3 DTM for the first time.” The test drives at the race track in Southern Spain will be held from 6th to 8th December.

As well as lining up in the DTM, BMW will also continue to compete in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) in 2012. The goal here is to successfully defend the Drivers’, Team and Manufacturers’ titles won in this year’s GT class. The team responsible for running the BMW M3 GT remains BMW Team RLL, while the drivers will be announced at a later date. Marquardt said: “It goes without saying that we will not be sending a successful car like the BMW M3 GT off to the museum after a season like the one we enjoyed in 2011. BMW Team RLL will be back with this model to defend its GT titles next year.”

In Europe, BMW is strengthening its customer racing presence with the BMW Z4 GT3. After the many triumphs achieved last season, the car will be the subject of intense further development for 2012 and, in the hands of private BMW teams and drivers, looks set to cause a stir at events and championships held in accordance with the GT3 regulations. Marquardt said: “We believe that the GT3 class has a successful future ahead of it. You only need to look at how many manufacturers are racing in this class with competitive GT3 versions of their production cars. The strength of the field is incredibly high – which is why we will be doing everything in our power to ensure that the BMW Z4 GT3 continues to guarantee victories for our privateer drivers and teams.”

The 2012 season will also see private BMW teams using the BMW Z4 GT3 at 24-hour classics, such as the marathon round the Nürburgring-Nordschleife (DE). “I am certain that this car will provide us with everything we need to challenge for overall victory,” said Marquardt. No significant innovations are planned for the remaining customer racing models, the BMW 320 TC and BMW M3 GT4. The BMW customer teams will continue to receive support.

The Formula BMW Talent Cup enters its second season in 2012. This training series sees 15 talented junior drivers systematically introduced to the demands of professional motorsport. Driving coaches and race engineers supervise the participants in small groups, working their way through everything from individual driving styles to the complete set-up. In the inaugural season in 2011, Stefan Wackerbauer clinched overall victory at the grand finale in Oschersleben (DE).

This year’s trophy for the most successful privateer BMW driver is heading to Canada: Marquardt presented Paul Dalla Lana (CA) with the winner’s cheque for 30,000 Euros at the 50th BMW Sports Trophy Award Ceremony, held in the Double Cone building at Munich’s BMW Welt. Marquardt explained how the BMW Sports Trophy will gain even more importance: “As part of our realignment in close-to-production motorsport, next year’s winner of the BMW Sports Trophy will receive a test day in the BMW M3 DTM the following year. On the one hand, this will allow us to underline the importance of the Sports Trophy to BMW. On the other hand, it shows the close interaction of our involvement in motorsport. At the forefront of this is our DTM commitment, while customer racing forms the essential base.”

Today we bring you two videos (via Insideline and Bimmerpost respectively) of the next generation M3 as it gets some late season testing in at the ‘Ring. We expect the four door M3 to be the first out of the gate in the spring of 2013 with the two door (still likely named the M3 and not the M4) a year later.

(other video after the break)

However the big mystery is what’s under the hood. We know it’s a six cylinder but whether or not it’s a V6 (derived directly from the 4.4L V8 in the new M5) or an inline six remains a mystery. We also know that M will employ the use of at least two turbo-chargers in an effort to produce over 450 hp. One thing we can tell is that the exhaust (as heard here) is clearly a work in progress.

Look for testing images and video to slow down as the ‘Ring testing season draws to a close in the coming weeks. However we should be seeing an updated version of the F80 next spring as it undergoes it’s final testing phase ahead of a likely 2013 launch. And yes, we do expect it in the US.

Today BMW of North America takes the wraps off it’s latest limited edition M3. The concept is similar than the previous two other editions but the Competition Edition, with its Carbon trim and black details, is a bit more motorsport influenced. It’s also a way for BMW to signify the launch of Certified M Centers in the US. Instead of a phone bank opening up to sell the cars, BMW is giving one Competition Edition to the first 40 dealerships that sign on to become M Certified.

Official Release: BMW of North America today announced the 2012 M3 Competition Edition featuring Frozen Silver exterior paint and other enhancements. To honor the 40 years since the founding of BMW M in 1972, production for the United States of these very special M3 Coupes will be limited to 40 identically-equipped cars. Each features BMW Individual Frozen Silver Metallic exterior paint with a deep metallic luster to accentuate the athletic lines of the legendary M3. The unique exterior treatment also includes black hood intakes and dark chrome exterior trim, including the kidney grills, the M side gills and the exhaust tips. Black M3 GTS wheels complete the striking exterior. The interior features black Extended Novillo Leather with unique palladium silver accents and palladium silver-contrast stitching on front seats, headrests, door trim panels / handles, center console, and center armrest. The interior is further distinguished with an Alcantara-covered multi-function M steering wheel with M3 Checkered Flag logo inlay. The door sill finishers also feature the M3 Checkered Flag logo while the handbrake lever sports an embroidered M Power logo. As a final touch, genuineCarbon Fiber trims the dash and center console. The 2012 BMW M3 Competition Edition will be offered for an MSRP of $81,060 including destination and handling.

(Full specs and gallery after the break)

Unlike previous M3 Edition models, one each of the 40 2012 M3 Competition Edition models has been allocated to the first 40 US authorized BMW centers to become M Certified Centers.

Each 2012 M3 Competition Edition will be powered by the award-winning 4.0-liter, 414-horsepower M V8 engine, equipped with BMW’s M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) which lowers the 0-60mph acceleration time of the M3 to 4.5 seconds from 4.7. Redline is a breathtaking 8,400 rpm.

The 2012 Competition Edition M3 continues the tradition of innovation and passion for driving by incorporating key changes to the M3’s dynamic qualities. The included Competition Package reduces vehicle ride height by 10mm and includes M3 GTS 19-inch wheels (in black for this Edition) with wider offset for enhanced stability, standard Electronic Damping Control with enhanced programming, and higher-threshold programming for the M Dynamic Mode.

Competition Edition celebrates the M3’s rich racing history in the US.

The checkered flags emblazoned on the door sills and steering wheel of the M3 Competition Edition pay tribute to more than a decade of BMW GT class success on the racing circuits of North America.

From Lime Rock Park in the Litchfield Hills of Western Connecticut to Laguna Seca Raceway just north of California’s Monterey Bay, the BMW M3 has given sports car racing fans across North America reason to cheer since the first BMW of North America M3 racing program began in 1995.

With drivers such as Bill Auberlen, Boris Said and the legendary Hans Stuck, the BMW M3 dominated the GT classes of sports car racing in the States into the new millennium with two generations of BMW M3 (E36 and E46), winning 53 of 118 races entered. In 1997 the BMW M3 became one of the few Marques ever to win itsclass at both the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring in the same year. As remarkable as that was, the feat was repeated the very next year.

A decade and a half later the BMW M3 continues to top the American Le Mans Series podiums against a tough field of GT competitors. Led by American racing icon Bobby Rahal, BMW Team RLL won the ALMS GT Manufacturer and Team championships in both 2010 and 2011, with Joey Hand and Dirk MÏ?ller adding the Driver’s title this year for a clean sweep of all GT class championships.

Major M3 Racing Championships in North America:

1997 BMW M3 (E36) SportsCar GTS-3 Manufacturer, Team, Driver (Bill Auberlen)

1998 BMW M3 (E36) SportsCar GT3 Manufacturer, Team, Driver (Mark Simo)

1998 BMW M3 (E36) USRRC GT3 Manufacturer, Team, Driver (Ross Bentley)

2004 BMW M3 (E46) Rolex GT Manufacturer, Team, Driver (Bill Auberlen)

2010 BMW M3 GT ALMS Manufacturer, Team

2011 BMW M3 GT ALMS Manufacturer, Team, Driver (Joey Hand, Dirk Muller)

About BMW Individual Frozen Paint Colors.

The special BMW Individual matte paintwork on the M3 Competition Edition adds a rare metallic luster to the vehicle. Compared to conventional exterior colors with gloss finish, the sculpture-like character of the Frozen Silver paint highlights the athletic contours of the M3. To achieve this luster, a special BMW-developed silk matte clear coat is applied over the Silver Metallic base coat. BMW Individual’s Frozen paints meet or exceed all BMW standards for durability and longevity, and feature a full factory warranty. Special care guidelines are provided to customers and authorized BMW centers to prevent the finish from becoming glossy.

The BMW M3 DTM excited tens of thousands of fans at the DTM season finale at Hockenheim (DE). Dirk Werner (DE) completed two laps on the Hockenheim track in the “BMW M Performance Accessories M3 DTM”, one immediately before the DTM race and one immediately afterwards, together with one Audi and one Mercedes-Benz. The three premium constructors that are involved in the series in future gave the fans on the grandstands and in front of their televisions a first taste of the coming year.

BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt said: “This event was something very special for us. Since the early morning there have been clusters of people around our car, and it was simply breathtaking to be able to present our car in front of such a crowd. The reactions to our car were all positive. Today gave us all a lot of extra motivation to present ourselves in top form in half a year’s time at the same venue.”

BMW works driver Dirk Werner commented: “It was a great experience to be able to do today’s demonstration laps. Obviously I drove the BMW M3 DTM at the recent tests – but a stage like this really is something special. You could feel the spine tingling atmosphere even in the car.”

The new “BMW M Performance Accessories” livery of the BMW M3 DTM had been presented to a few members of the public at the BMW Autohaus Krauth in Heidelberg (DE) on Friday. Around three months earlier, on July 15th, the BMW M3 DTM concept car was officially presented at the BMW Welt in Munich (DE). From 2012 on, BMW will compete in the DTM with three strong teams, the BMW Team Schnitzer, the BMW Team RBM and the BMW Team RMG. The BMW works drivers Andy Priaulx (GB) and Augusto Farfus (BR) have already been confirmed as drivers for the 2012 season.

The next generation M3, internally known as F80 and based on the recently revealed all new 3 Series sedan has begun its shakedown at the Nordschleife. While still early in development, the car is further along than it seems. With a launch planned for within the next 18 months M has been hard at work testing the car internally at the rolling wind tunnel and at night to get it to the stage we see here. Heavy cladding prevents us from getting a better view of the final product but we know a bit about what is being evaluated now.

Sources have indicated that M has tested no less than 4 engine derivatives for this version of BMW’s sportiest model. A tweaked naturally aspirated engine, with Valvetronic and Direct Injection, a twin turbo V8 (detuned from the M5), an inline 6 with three turbos spools (one electric and two as part of a dual scroll turbo), and finally a turbo V6. The naturally aspirated V8 has been ruled out as we were informed recently- it is just not possible to get the efficiency and performance as with a turbo setup without getting out of the cost/benefit ratio.

The V6 offers packaging and and performance benefits and from several well placed sources, appears to be the likely candidate and will produce around 450hp with nearly as much torque while improving emissions and fuel economy by a staggering 30% over the outgoing V8.

We’ll have more in the coming weeks so stay tuned!

Just your typical day in Munich, visiting the Welt- when my ears heard the scream of a V8. There was a “demo” of the racing prowess of the BMW M3 GT4 taking place in the middle of the the BMW Welt. Really it was a car control demonstration with tire spinning, power slides and a drift here and there (depending on where you were standing). They made a few announcements in a variety of languages for parents to hold their kids and to stand back from the main thoroughfare before the engine music and “demo” began.

This is one of the many reasons I am loving Germany- there is no way this could EVER happen in the US; too much fear of litigation. I was only able to get the last 30 seconds because my iPhone was dead to the world at this point in the day, hope you enjoy it!

In an unfortunate series of events, the official BMW M3 Ring Taxi and 7 other vehicles collided on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring at 2pm local time yesterday.

The accident occurred in the “Bergwerk” section. According to the Polizei RheinlandPfalz, the accident was initially caused by a car speeding through an established work zone crashing. One car crashed into the rear of another sending it 50 meters down the track where it collided with two more cars. Some cars were able to stop and avoid the initial crash but from testimony at the scene the ‘Ring taxi did not appear to see the accident and slowed too late, and crashed into two cars that were slowing and a third that was stopped before it came to a rest at the guard rail.

One driver was seriously injured and taken to the hospital, two others were hospitalized briefly and released at the time of the police report. Total material damages were expected to be in excess of 100,000 euro.

Official Release: BMW has written another chapter in motorsport history in the USA at the finale of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), the 1000-mile Petit Le Mans, at Road Atlanta, in Braselton, Georgia. BMW Team RLL won a second consecutive manufacturers’ championship in the GT class to complete a 2011 hat-trick of titles. The drivers’ and team championships had already been secured two weeks ago with one race still to go. The last time BMW achieved this feat was in 2001 with the BMW M3 GTR. BMW only returned to the ALMS with the BMW M3 GT in 2009.

After a thrilling race, Dirk Werner (DE), Bill Auberlen (US) and Augusto Farfus (BR) ultimately achieved a third place finish, completing 367 laps around the 2.54-mile circuit. After an incident with a slower car in the closing stages of the race caused two pit stops to repair the damage, their teammates Dirk Müller (DE), Joey Hand (US) and Andy Priaulx (GB) finished the race in ninth place. At least one BMW M3 GT finished on the podium in every single race this season. Dirk Müller and Joey Hand secured first place in the drivers’ championship, ahead of Oliver Gavin and Jan Magnussen (Corvette). Dirk Werner and Bill Auberlen (US) finished third overall. BMW Team RLL clinched victory in the team competition, ahead of Corvette Racing. In the Manufacturers’ Championship, BMW finished ahead of Porsche.

With this strong result, the BMW drivers scored valuable points for two championships. The 1000 mile race at the roller coaster Road Atlanta circuit not only counts towards the American Le Mans Series, but also the 2011 Intercontinental Le Mans Cup.

“The entire team deserves a huge compliment. Everyone involved on both sides of the Atlantic have been justly rewarded for their tireless efforts”, said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “To celebrate this kind of success in one of the toughest racing series in the GT class is a fantastic result. Throughout the season, the key to this success was excellent drivers, a very low error rate, a team working in almost perfect harmony, our strong tire partner Dunlop – and the BMW M3 GT, of course. Our engineers really raised the bar in GT racing with this car this year.”

Ludwig Willisch, President of BMW of North America, added: “Congratulations to everyone at BMW Team RLL. To achieve an excellent result like this with the BMW M3 GT in one of the most prestigious GT racing series in North America is simply fantastic. We can all be proud of this achievement. More BMW M cars are sold in the USA than anywhere else in the world, underlining the importance of this success.”

BMW also emerged victorious in the “Green X Challenge” category, which is all about using resources responsibly.

Bobby Rahal: “We came here to win the Manufacturers Championship for BMW and we did it. It was not an easy race. We had a number of tire punctures, an incident with a slower car in the dark, and so much traffic. This kept us from the top of the podium, but we knew what we had to do to win the Manufacturers Championship and I am certainly pleased to bring the title to BMW for the second consecutive year. I am extremely grateful to all of the sponsors and partners that support BMW Team RLL.”

Dirk Müller: “In the race, I had a moment of shock. I came into a blind apex in fourth gear and just avoided crashing into another car that was stopped on track. I just clipped the right side of my car and had to pit for repairs. Right now, I am just happy to be here in one piece. Nevertheless, we had a great season. I am very, very pleased that were able to secure the driver’s championship at the last race. We can be very proud on our achievements.”

Joey Hand: “It is a great feeling racing here as the 2011 driver’s champion. It was a great effort from everyone, BMW Motorsport, BMW Team RLL, Dunlop and Crowne Plaza. This championship was not just won by me and Dirk. It was won by the entire program over the course of three years. This BMW is the coolest and most comfortable racing car I have ever driven. I simply had the greatest year of my career.”

Andy Priaulx: “I raced at Sebring where this successful season began, so it was another great experience coming over here and be part of BMW Team RLL once more at the Petit Le Mans. The atmosphere here is as brilliant as the BMW M3 GT. Congratulations to Dirk and Joey for winning the driver’s title and a big thank you to everybody in the team. I enjoyed the weekend very much.”

Dirk Werner: “It is a bit of a pity that we lost a second place finish, but we’ve been able to secure the manufacturer’s title for BMW with a podium. It was a very tough race. As they did the entire season, the team helped us with great pit stops to gain positions in the race. The team did an absolutely fantastic job.”

Bill Auberlen:“Petit Le Mans is always very tough race. Dirk did an absolutely great job in the final stint to keep us on the podium. I am very proud to be part of this team and continue to add to BMW’s trophy case. Congratulations to Dirk and Joey for winning the driver’s title.”

Augusto Farfus: “It is always great to race in America. The event here at Road Atlanta is amazing. I would compare it to a small Nürburgring with regards to both the racetrack and the atmosphere. There are a lot of BMW fans. The spectators are very close to the circuit and we can see them waving and cheering. This season has been very successful for BMW, and I am proud that I was given another chance racing in the ALMS with such great teammates.”

This completes an extremely successful motorsport season in the USA for BMW. On September 17th, TELMEX Chip Ganassi Racing, with Felix Sabates drivers Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas behind the wheel of a BMW Riley, secured the drivers’ title in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sport Car Series at the EMCO Gears Classic in Lexington/Ohio. For the pair in the TELMEX Chip Ganassi Racing BMW number 01, this was the second consecutive title with BMW Power. Paul Dalla Lana of the Turner Motorsport team also had reason to be happy. He drove a BMW M3 to the drivers’ title in the 2011 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Grand Sport Class – also at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The Turner Motorsport team can also celebrate the team title, while the championships also went to BMW for a second consecutive year in the engine and manufacturer competitions.

Could M do the unthinkable and ditch BMW’s famed inline configuration for a V? It’s been rumored for several years now but we had no hard evidence of the move. Until now. The video after the break is the first we’ve seen of the new F80 M3 four door in action on the road. And we’ll be damned if that exhaust note doesn’t sound a lot like a highly tuned V6 rather than the smoother sounding inline 6.

If it’s a V6 we can imagine the engine will be loosely based on the M5′s S63tü twin turbo V8 but with even greater high-end power and efficiency.

What do you think? Does it matter if the next M3 has an inline six or a V6 under the hood?

Official Release: The past two days have seen BMW Motorsport continue its preparations for the coming DTM season at the Hungaroring (HU). As at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz (DE), this test was held together with the other two manufacturers represented in the DTM. Once again, three BMW M3 DTM cars were in action, run by the three teams BMW Team Schnitzer, BMW Team RBM and BMW Team RMG. The tests focussed on tyre tests, general set-up work and long runs.

As well as Andy Priaulx (GB) and Augusto Farfus (BR), the freshly-crowned American Le Mans Series champion Dirk Müller (DE, day 1) and Dirk Werner (DE, day 2) also saw action at the wheel of the third BMW M3 DTM. Both Andy and Augusto have already been confirmed by BMW Motorsport as regular drivers for the coming season.

The tests were successful. All three cars completed long distances without any issues on both days. On day one, the three BMW M3 DTM cars lapped the 4.381-kilometre 361 times. Day two saw them complete 392 laps.

Andy Priaulx (GB): “In this current phase every test is very important to us. The way the car and tyres interact is a particularly important factor in order to ensure we are competitive, and that was a key component of our test programme. With every test we have a better understanding of the car. We gained more important knowledge again here at the Hungaroring.”

Augusto Farfus (BR): “It is a good sign that the cars are so reliable at such an early point in our preparations. We had another two productive days and once again learned a lot about the car.”

Dirk Müller (DE): “I am having a few very exciting weeks at the moment. After the first joint test at the Lausitzring, we were able to secure the ALMS title last weekend, and now I have just completed the most recent DTM tests. Next week I return to the ALMS for the season finale in Road Atlanta. However, I am very happy to accept the stress. It was great to be involved in the BMW DTM test programme again. I am developing greater trust in the BMW M3 DTM with every kilometre I drive in it. I already feel very comfortable in the car.”

Dirk Werner (DE): “It was a great feeling to be able to test the BMW M3 DTM for the first time. It is very different to the BMW M3 GT. The carbon brakes, in particular, require a big readjustment. The car felt very good from the first moment. We made good progress over the course of the day. I am looking forward to the next opportunity to do some more testing. First, though, I head to Road Atlanta where we can hopefully also win the manufacturers title for BMW.”

The car had its official roll-out at the BMW test facilities in Aschheim on 4th July. It was then presented to the public for the first time at the DTM event in Munich on 15th July. The tests so far have allowed BMW Motorsport to gain valuable experience with the new car and drive forward the further development. The joint tests are now the next milestones on the way to the start of the 2012 DTM season.

For years we’ve been secret admirers of P-cars. We’re not afraid to admit the 911 and Boxster can be pretty compelling products when specced appropriately. Now with the Cayman added to the mix, Porsche has an even more compelling product for enthusiast that’s led to more than a few BMW owners going over to the ‘other side’. It wasn’t until recently that the Boxster and Cayman became particularly interesting to us. For 2011, Porsche released two hardcore models based on its entry-level cars; the Cayman R and the Boxster Spyder. We drove both recently (and briefly), outside of Chicago, at the Autobahn Country Club to see how these Porsche’s would stack-up to the two smallest M cars – the 1M and M3.

First, let’s just get this out of the way. If you’re an able-bodied person who doesn’t mind contorting, Porsche sells the best seats in any mass-produced car on the US market (period). In fact, the entire interior of a Porsche tends to be focused and functional. While they often lack the infotainment technology of a modern BMW, it’s perfectly set-up for the enthusiast.

That doesn’t mean it’s all without fault. The shifter is short but requires more force than you’d expect (or like). Then there’s the clutch; it doesn’t have the feel you’d expect in a car dedicated to delighting the driver. In comparing the left pedal in these P-Car offerings to my (ex) 1988 535is it was shocking how overboosted it was and how much mechanical delicacy was missing. Even most modern M cars have more feel than either Porsche.

Now let’s get to the good. Steering feel is as magnificent as you’ve read over the years. It’s direct, well weighted and full of organic feedback, something that is often missing in many modern day BMWs. The sounds emanating from behind me were great – especially in the Sport Exhaust equipped Spyder. I’d love to get some back to back seat time in an M Performance exhaust equipped M3 and the Spyder. So very different but both are spine tingling. However, one thing I do think BMW has the edge in is engine sound. I couldn’t help but think the sonorous purr of the BMW inline six (in 1M or E46 form) edges the flat six out in aural quality.

Both Porsches have a specialness that even a car like the 1M doesn’t replicate. They pull you in with their single-mindedness and make every drive feel momentous. Yet as a performance tool you have to ask yourself what you prefer. Both Porsches were perfectly honed in a way that even the 1M or the M3 can’t quite match due to their engine layout. But from a functionality stand-point unquestionably the 1M would be easier to live with day to day. I was particularly surprised at how much more civilized the ride was on the 1M ascompared to the Cayman R.

After a quick drive in and around Autobahn I was surprised at how much I preferred the Spyder over the Cayman R. What it may lack in structural rigidity (which it really doesn’t) it more than makes up for in presence and sound. There are few cars more gorgeous from the rear than the Spyder, which looks like a smaller version of the famed Porsche GT supercar.

Do they win out over the 1M or M3? It’s easy to cast them aside as not comparable given the lack of seats and luggage space. But let’s forget that for a moment and focus on what each would be like to own. Immediately I’d take the Cayman R out of the running because the Spyder just feels so much more compelling and special (which is the point of these cars). Likewise, I’d have to remove the M3 from the list as too big, heavy and common.

So the Spyder and the 1M then? After a very initial drive it’s the 1M that I feel has rock-star attitude that (ironically) matches the Spyders’ looks. As perfect as the Spyders’ dynamics are, it’s just less fun. In the end, if I had to choose one I’ll always go with the car that I prefer to drive rather than the one I prefer to be seen in.

Special thanks goes out to Autobahn Country Club for the use of its facilities and the 2nd photo above. For those who would like to know more Autobahn, check out their site. Individual and corporate memberships are available (less than you might think) and the track hosts many events and races throughout the year. If you have a chance to ever make it out for any of them, definitely do so.

Does the way you break in a car really matter? We’ve been asked that question many times over the years by readers. There are two popular schools of thought. The first is that you strictly follow the manufacturers guidelines and go easy. The idea is that this allows for the various mechanicals to be properly ‘bedded in’ and for wear to happen gradually.

The second is that you simply drive the car how you would normally from day one. Here the idea is that you’re breaking in the car by treating to a heavy does of normalcy.

For us the answer has always been easy. If German engineers suggest you go easy on a car they’ve engineered, we suggest you follow their advice. But what about M cars? We know that M cars demand a 1,200 miles service at the close of break-in. But what else is specific to M models? We talked to a BMW about to see if there were some specifics that, while not in the manual, are good guidelines to follow. What they told us expanded on the manual and gave us a lot of the reasoning behind the rules (along with a few new ones to follow). You can see the entire list after the break.

Tires: these need 200 miles of wear before they have the full intended grip. Until then avoid unnecessary wear or heavy cornering.

Gearbox: you should always treat a manual box with respect. But none more than the first 400 miles. During that time be extra clean with your shifts and for God’s sake don’t grind anything but your teeth. Once the 400 miles are up, feel free to have at it.

The M Differential: The M Diff is a complex and special piece of mechanical goodness that requires some serious respect. That means no full acceleration – ie slamming your foot the floor. But what if you accidentally do 5-6 times? While it doesn’t mean expensive repairs down the road it will cause the M Diff to be noisier as it racks up the miles. So how can you feel the brunt of an M car while in the break-in period? During the first 1,200 miles M recommends that you ease on the throttle rather than slam it to the floor.

The Engine: The official line by BMW on the 1M is to keep it below 4,500 rpms until 1,200 miles. In reality, we’ve heard that you only need to keep it below 4,500 until it gets closer to 1,000 miles. At that point you can start to gradually increase your self-imposed redline until that magic 1,200 miles mark when you can also touch redline now and again.

The other requirement is to vary the RPMs through the range while not reaching over 100 mph. The thought here is that this will allow you to vary the load on the rings which allows them to seat properly.

Breaking in my 1M has been a test of patience given the ability of the twin-turbo inline six to generate enormous torque from the lowest depths of the rpms. With only 800 miles to go until that 1,200 mark, I may just make it without laying down black marks.

We reported last week that BMW intends to roll-out a new collection of Performance accessories for its M cars. And the one that got the most interest was the highly anticipate M Stripe package for the 1M. Originally rumored to be a throw-back design, the stripes clearly are a down-sized version of the same design that debuted earlier this spring on the M3.

And while we didn’t care for them on the M3, we definitely don’t care for them on the 1M. Especially the small <Strike>mistake</strike> portion that extends behind the rear tire. We get that it’s suppose to follow the natural line that most BMW’s have emphasizing the powerful rear wheel drive layout, but it simply looks awkward.

The other accessories listed for the 1M (CF spoiler, mirrors and gloss black front grilles) are hold-overs from the standard 1 Series accessories that have been available for four years now.

Here’s the official release (the same as we posted last week)

Official Release: The intriguing character of BMW M cars is further emphasised by the BMW M Performance range of accessories. These complement those available for the BMW M3 and include new products for the power train, the suspension, aerodynamics and the cockpit and have now been extended to include other models. Wing mirror covers and a rear spoiler are available for the BMW 1 Series M Coupe. These accessories are manufactured from carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), handmade by BMW. In addition, an eye-catching BMW M Performance kidney-shaped radiator grille is available in a black, high-gloss finish.

The BMW M Performance range of accessories for the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M allow the driver’s own distinctive personality to shine through. For both models, 21-inch BMW M Performance light alloy wheels in double- spoke design, a BMW M Performance carbon front splitter and a front grille in black are now available. In addition to the BMW M Performance rear spoiler and the BMW M Performance tail fins in black, model-specific BMW M Performance side skirts underline the dynamic elegance of the BMW X6 M. Perfect control and an authentic racing feel are provided by the BMW M Performance steering wheel, which is available for the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M. It has an Alcantara cover and a rim that is designed with a flat section at the bottom. In addition, it sports three-colour M stitching and a centre marker at the top in racing blue.

The BMW M Performance range of accessories has now also been complemented by an attractive new innovation in the field of design. The BMW M Performance side stripes for the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, the BMW M3 Coupe, the BMW M3 Convertible, the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M refine the distinctive appearance of the BMW M, adding an exclusive sporty accent to the vehicle.

BMW is set to release a number of performance accessories at Frankfurt. However perhaps none are more important than what you see above – an early look at the next generation of BMW Performance parts. More specifically what we see above is the 1 Series Performance Study – a concept for BMW Performance to show off some of their new ideas. But don’t let the word concept fool you – these accessories are pretty much final. And from the aero-kit to the wheels it’s a bold new look for BMW Performance.

Also shown for the first time are the full range of BMW M “Performance Stripes”. The design follows the M3 Performance Stripes released earlier this year – starting low in the front and extending to just behind the rear fender. They’re a little disappointing to our eyes but we’ll reserve full judgement until we see them in the flesh.

Internet forum F30post brings us this latest (rumor that BMW may build another generation of M3 sedan despite rumors to the contrary. However what’s really interesting about the F80 (the internal code-name for the car) is that it may be the only M3 offered in name. As we’ve reported previously on BimmerFile, BMW is considering fully adopting a new naming system that sees the two doors go to even numbers (2, 4 and 6 Series) and the sedan based vehicles stay with their current named (1, 3, 5 and 7 Series). For M this could very well mean that the next generation M3 coupe (F82) and convertible could become the M4.

Originally the rumors pointed to the M3 Sedan being dropped in favor of a four door coupe like vehicle similar to the upcoming 6 Series Gran Sport or the Mercedes CLS. However this new rumor would indicate that all options are on the table for M.

One thing is for certain, BMW won’t throw away 30 years of brand equity by not producing something called an M3.
