Reuters is reporting that BMW is considering an engine partnership with Hyundai in order to create greater economies of scale for it’s three and four cylinder engines. The idea is that the two would share development costs of the next generation of small BMW and MINI engines but that the engines would still be engineered in Munich by BMW.
Unrelated (but always somehow related) the New York Times is reporting that China has now become BMW’s largest market with the US also up.

Official Release: The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported April sales of 26,793 vehicles, an increase of 6.1 percent from the 25,247 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, BMW Group is up 13.7% on sales of 102,522 in the first four months of 2012 compared to 90,204 in the same period in 2011.

The BMWUSA.com configurator is now ready to build an M6 anyway you’d like. It is nice to see the addition of more BMW Individual options as choices even though they bring the price up to stratosphere levels. Yes, we just built an M6 for just under $137k!

Official Release: The BMW Group sold more vehicles in March than in any other month in its history. The company sold a total of 185.728 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles in the past month, not only significantly exceeding the figure for March of last year (165,846 units / +12%) but also the previous sales high of 165,855 vehicles recorded in June 2011. The company also achieved a new high for the first three months: Retail volumes for the year to the end of March increased by more than 40,000 vehicles to 425,528 units (prev. yr. 382,763 units), which represents a growth of 11.2% compared with the first quarter of 2011.

- The 2013 BMW M5 will have an MSRP of $90,695.
The 2012 M6 Convertible arrives this June and will be priced at $113,995 (including $895 Destination and Handling).
The 2013 M6 Coupe will be base priced at $106,995 (including destination and handling).
The 2013 BMW X6 M will sell for $93,795 (including destination and handling) and arrives this May with a new “Powerdome” hood and LCI upgrades.

• Best first quarter ever for MINI brand – sales up 14.9%
Woodcliff Lake, NJ – April 3, 2012… The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported March sales of 29,806 vehicles, an increase of 13 percent from the 26,382 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, the BMW Group (BMW and MINI combined) achieved its best first quarter sales since the record year of 2007 retailing 75,729 vehicles, up 16.6 percent compared to 64,957 vehicles sold in the first three months of 2011.
“The 1st Quarter record affirmed our increasing sales momentum and shows that customers feel more confident about the future,” said Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “The year is still young and BMW alone will introduce in 2012 more new and refreshed models in the U.S. than it ever has before in any one year making us strongly optimistic about the months ahead.”

Official Release: With 127,634 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brand automobiles delivered worldwide (+14.2% / prev. yr. 111,724), the BMW Group achieved its best-ever February sales result. A total of 239,800 (prev. yr. 216,917) vehicles have been delivered to customers since the start of the year – an increase of +10.5% compared with the same period last year.
“February was another record month for the BMW Group and we intend to continue the positive development. We aim to exceed our 2011 record sales in 2012 and to maintain our position as the number one premium car company worldwide”, said Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Sales and Marketing. Robertson continued: “The new BMW 3 Series, which was launched worldwide in mid-February, will play an important role in driving further growth for the BMW Group. It has had an excellent start, with incoming orders exceeding our expectations. Additional new models such as the luxurious BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé, which we unveiled at the Geneva Auto Salon, will also provide for further impetus in the second half of the year.”

BMW’s US sales are up and you can thank the launch of the new 3 Series, 6 Series and all three SAV models. Specifically the new 6 Series is flying off the lots with sales up 400% compared to the last year. Then there’s the new 3er which is up 60% from last year.
In total that the BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported February sales of 26,184 vehicles, an increase of 31.5 percent from the 19,919 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago.
