BMW has finally released its pricing on the entry level 640i Gran Coupe and then 650i xDrive Gran Coupe. At $76,895 it’s not cheap but it’s still a lot of style for the money in our opinion.

Official Release: BMW of North America today announced pricing for the all-new 2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe. The $76,895 (including $895 Destination and Handling Charge) TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder powered 640i Gran Coupe is the initial model of the range, and arrives early this summer. Later in the summer, the TwinPower Turbo V-8 powered 2013 BMW 650i Gran Coupe and the all-wheel drive 2013 BMW 650i xDrive Gran Coupe will join the line. Pricing for the V-8 powered models will be announced closer to the time of launch.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is a new 4-door, 4+1 seat addition to the 6 Series line that successfully combines the stunning proportions, design and driving dynamics of the 6 Series Coupe with interior room and amenities for up to five passengers. Harmonious proportions, precise lines and sleekly contoured surfaces give the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe the unique ability to satisfy the driver who wants a luxurious and sporty coupe yet needs a car capable of carrying four adults in comfort and luxury.

The all-new BMW 6 Series Gran coupe will make its world debut at the Geneva International Auto Show in March and its North American premiere at the New York International Auto Show in early April. The 640i Gran Coupe will also be previewed at the Amelia Island 2012 Concours d’Elegance in Amelia Island, Florida from March 9-11.

The BMW Group is off to a record setting pace to start the year. Between BMW, MINI and Rolls Royce sales are up 6.6% from a year ago with BMW selling more cars in the month of January than ever before (112,163). That last part may not seem like a big deal but considering the brand’s bread & butter model, the 3 Series sedan, has been pending the launch of the new generation since the fall it is impressive.

BMW will also offer new to market models in 2012 such as the ///M5 and 6 Series Gran Coupe (shown above) as well as refreshed products (X6, 7 Series) which should do nothing but increase sales further.

MINI continues to benefit from the the year old Countryman small SAV, and new offerings in the form of two seater coupe with sales up 11.6%.

Official Release: BMW Group, Official Automotive Partner to the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games, today revealed the winning design for its pavilion at the Olympic Park.

Following a competition involving six architecture firms, BMW selected the British firm Serie based on its cutting-edge design that will represent a significant architectural addition to the Olympic Park, whilst also reflecting the company’s deep commitment to sustainability.

Tim Abbott, Managing Director, BMW Group UK comments: “As a major investor, manufacturer and employer in the UK, BMW Group is deeply proud to be an official partner for Britain’s first Olympic & Paralympic Games since 1948.”

“This commitment to the UK is also reflected in our choice of a home-grown architecture practice to design our pavilion and we’re delighted that Serie’s final design reflects our commitment to sustainable thinking in such an innovative and eye-catching manner. We believe it provides a truly worthy addition to the Olympic Park”.

About the BMW pavilion

BMW’s pavilion, which has a floor space of 800m2, will be built on an elevated site above the Waterworks River, situated between the Olympic Stadium and the Aquatics Centre. Serie’s innovative design will use river water to provide a sustainable source of cooling for the building before returning this filtered water to the river via an eye-catching ‘water curtain’ feature.

Every element of the BMW pavilion has been designed to reflect the company’s heritage in environmental innovation. The two-storey superstructure will be built of steel with high recycled content. Use of carbon-intensive materials such as concrete has also been minimised.

Serie co-founder and principal architect Christopher Lee comments: “The design takes the idea of the pavilion in the park – the Victorian bandstand – but instead of one pavilion we envision nine pavilions clustered together to form a family.”

The top floor will house a number of individual standalone pavilions, which will be used to highlight BMW’s latest vehicle innovations.

The lower floor will house a range of interactive visitor exhibits, articulating BMW’s vision for sustainable mobility and support for Team GB and ParalympicsGB athletes including Rebecca Adlington, Tom Daley, Louis Smith and David Weir through the BMW London 2012 Performance Team programme. Over 8,000 visitors are expected to visit the BMW pavilion each day during the Olympic & Paralympic Games.

As Official Automotive Partner to London 2012 and a tier one sponsor, BMW Group will provide a fleet of around 4,000 vehicles to transport athletes and officials during the Games. This vehicle fleet will combine sustainable technologies including electric, hybrid and low-emissions diesel technologies to meet LOCOG’s challenging emissions target of 120g/km CO2 across the fleet.

BMW Group has also been ranked as the world’s most sustainable automobile company in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the last seven consecutive years and is the only car manufacturer to have featured in these rankings every year since their launch.

30.01.2012

Munich, 30th January 2012. BMW Motorsport returns with six BMW M3 DTM cars in 2012 as it makes its comeback in the DTM. One of the cars, the Castrol EDGE BMW M3 DTM, will bear the design of Castrol EDGE and Aral Ultimate. This marks an extension of the existing, long-term partnership between Castrol and BMW Motorsport, and sees Aral Ultimate presented as partner of BMW Motorsport in the DTM.

“For many years we have put our faith in high-performance Castrol lubricants, and have celebrated countless successes together on the racetrack,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “For that reason, everyone here at BMW Motorsport is delighted that we are able to build on this established partnership in the DTM. Castrol EDGE and Aral Ultimate are high-performance brands, which suit our DTM project perfectly.”

Michael Hansen, CEO Deutsche Castrol Vertriebsgesellschaft, said: “The DTM is one of the most spectacular racing series worldwide and pushes the drivers, teams and cars to the very limit. It is because of these high-performance demands that we research and develop our products through the extremes of motorsport. Together with our long-term partner BMW Motorsport, we are looking forward to the challenges ahead and will do everything in our power to ensure that BMW is able to triumph in the DTM as they did in the past.”
“The DTM cars have been using our Aral Ultimate high-performance fuel since 2005,” added Jürgen Blömers, Marketing Director Rhine at Aral. “It will obviously be very exciting to see how the BMW M3 DTM performs in its first season. Whatever happens we are convinced that the return of BMW to the DTM will make the series even more exciting and attractive for the fans. It is a logical step for Aral to be involved as a partner of BMW Motorsport.”

We’re just off the plane from having driven the new AH5 and will have our full review ready soon. But in the meantime you can get a first look at the car via BMWNA’s first official release.

Official release: BMW takes the development of intelligent hybrid drive systems to the next level with the introduction of the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 – another series-produced model in which a combustion engine and electric motor join forces to enhance both efficiency and the brand’s hallmark driving pleasure. The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 brings together a BMW TwinPower Turbo in-line 6-cylinder engine, an electric drive system and an 8-speed automatic gearbox for the first time. The latest generation of BMW ActiveHybrid technology also adds precisely controlled – and therefore extremely effective – intelligent energy management. All of which gives the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 an exceptional balance of performance and fuel efficiency for the benchmark performance sedan in the premium executive car class.

Its drive system generates combined output of 335 hp allows the car to be driven on electric power alone up to 37 mph (60 km/h) for 2.5 miles (4km), and accelerates the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds (preliminary). The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 will arrive as a 2012 model in US showrooms, March 2012 with a base MSRP of $61,845 (including $895 destination and handling).

The 300 hp inline-6 with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is the same engine well-known for its free-revving capability, pulling power and efficiency in the BMW 535i. The electric motor develops 54 hp and is supplied with energy by a high-performance lithium-ion battery housed in the trunk.

A harmonious blend of power from the two drive systems ensures that the
BMW ActiveHybrid 5 boasts not only the sportiest performance in its market segment but also a significant improvement in efficiency). Its full-hybrid drive system enables driving on purely electric power which means emission-free driving in urban conditions.

In order to fully exploit the potential of the BMW ActiveHybrid technology, the power electronics in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 uses a host of technologies to ensure the drive system runs at peak efficiency. The high-performance lithium-ion battery is recharged when the car is coasting or braking. The electric motor acts as a generator feeding energy into the high-voltage battery. By contrast, under acceleration, the electric motor takes on a boost function assisting the inline-6 by generating an extra burst of power, giving the sedan’s sporty driving character a noticeably sharper edge.

Integrated into the standard Driving Dynamics Control is an ECO PRO mode. It provides a relaxed and fuel-efficient driving style by tailoring the driving systems for maximum efficiency, including making more frequent use of all-electric mode. In ECO PRO mode, the combustion engine can be switched off and fully decoupled while coasting at speeds of up to 100 mph (160 km/h). This coasting mode combines comfortable driving with optimum utilization of the kinetic energy already generated. To avoid periods with the engine running at idle – at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic, for example – the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is equipped with a hybrid start-stop function. Plus, the power electronics in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 are linked up with the standard navigation system. This allows proactive analysis of driving conditions based on the selected route. This enables the drive components to be primed to deliver maximum efficiency (the effect may vary according to the quality of the available navigation data).

All the hybrid-specific components of the drive technology and energy management systems have been developed specially for use in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5. Both the electric motor and the air conditioning compressor are powered exclusively by the lithium-ion high-voltage battery, via the high-voltage electrical system. This allows a pleasant interior climate to be maintained even when the internal combustion engine is switched off – i.e. when the car is at a standstill, operating purely on electric power or in coasting mode. All of the new hybrid components are designed with durability to last the life of the vehicle.

Innovative combination: award-winning 6-cylinder inline engine, newly developed electric drive system.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is the first hybrid model to use a BMW inline 6-cylinder engine in its powertrain. The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 and BMW ActiveHybrid X6 both utilize a V8 engine, which is combined with either one or two electric motors. The 3.0-liter inline-6, which develops 300 hp and peak torque of 300 lb-ft, has won both the International Engine of the Year Award and the Ward’s 10 Best Engines Award two years running. The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology in the inline-6 combines a twin-scroll turbocharger, High Precision Direct Injection, Double VANOS variable valve timing and VALVETRONIC intake control. This technology package improves throttle response, revving ability, refinement and efficiency, while an aluminum crankcase also optimizes weight.

The synchronous electric motor of the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is integrated into the housing of the 8-speed automatic transmission, saving space. The interplay between the electric motor and gearbox is controlled by a clutch. The motor’s operating temperature is regulated by the combustion engine’s cooling system. The electric drive system develops 54 hp and makes 155 lb-ft of torque available from start. The motor is supplied with energy by a high-performance lithium-ion battery, specially developed for the BMW ActiveHybrid 5. The high-voltage battery is encased in special high-strength housing and positioned between the wheel arches in the trunk, providing it with optimum protection. It consists of 96 cells, has its own cooling system and offers usable energy capacity of 675 Wh.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 has both a conventional 14-volt power supply and a high-voltage supply with an operating voltage of 317 volts. They are linked by a voltage transformer which ensures that maximum electric energy can be used to enhance driving dynamics and comfort in any operating phase. Like the electric motor, the air conditioning compressor is also fed with power from the lithium-ion battery exclusively via the high-voltage supply. This ensures a pleasant interior climate, even when the combustion engine is switched off – i.e. when the car is at a standstill, operating purely on electric power or in coasting mode. In addition, the stationary climate control function can be used to cool the interior before the engine is started.

Electric motor: eager power delivery, compact design.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 5’s synchronous electric motor not only supports all-electric operations around town, it can also provide a performance-boost to the gas engine to deliver more powerful acceleration. In either case, the drive power is supplied instantly and without lag. Like all electric motors, it develops its full torque – of 155 lb-ft (210 Newton meters) – from a standing start.

Due to its high internal efficiency and low weight, the eight-speed automatic transmission contributes significantly to the efficiency of the powertrain. With its eight speeds, it combines a wide gear range with close ratio gear spacing. It also allows more use to be made of top gear, for a fuel-efficient, low-rpm driving style. The direct downshift capability and exceptionally short shift times can support very sporty driving. There is a controller throughout the high-performance transmission that ensures gear changes are always closely matched to the driver’s demands and the driving situation.

Intelligently controlled hybrid technology: unprecedented precision for maximum efficiency.
To make the most of the ActiveHybrid technology in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5, the power electronics incorporate a range of innovative intelligent energy management functions whose aim is to ensure that the powertrain operates as efficiently as possible. The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 can operate in all-electric mode up to a speed of 37 mph (60 km/h), for zero emissions in town. The lithium-ion high-voltage battery can store s

The new BMW M5.

Expert dialogue with Maximilian Ahme via M-Power.

Maximilian Ahme will answer the questions of MPW members. He is responsible for the technology of the entire vehicle with the exception of the electronics.

When did work begin on the development of the BMW M5 and how many kilometres were covered during testing?

Two to three years must be allowed for testing the development of a BMW M. In some cases predecessor vehicles are used in the first phase, enabling initial engine tests to be carried out, for example. However, this is just a short phase. The fine tuning then involves the latest models. The development departments for engine, electronics, chassis, etc. each have their own test vehicles to enable them to put the latest technology to the test. Approximately 2 million kilometres were covered throughout the world by the new BMW M5 in this way.
How does the engine of the BMW M5 differ from that of the BMW X5 M/X6 M?

The engine of the BMW M5 has been almost completely redesigned. In essence, the only feature it has in common with the engine of the X5/6 M is the bank angle (90 degrees) and the cylinder spacing. The specification sheet also indicated a higher maximum rotational speed of 7,200 rpm.

A lot of new features have been added in order to cater for the demands for low fuel consumption and good response: starting from the continuous regulation of the variable valve timing (VALVETRONIC) by means of the optimised cross-bank manifold to the dethrottling on the intake and output side, where we use larger charge-air coolers and turbochargers with more air throughput according to the M-TwinScroll concept. This required a new cylinder head with new valve drive mechanism and high precision injection. VALVETRONIC is combined with direct injection with an eight-cylinder drive – BMW M has done some pioneering work here. This measure also saves fuel. The oil circulation system has been optimised: a wet sump with an additional oil pump, which has already proven itself in the previous engine. Engine and transmission control are also new. The overall package guarantees a responsiveness familiar from earlier M models with no sign of the so-called “turbo lag”.

Why wasn’t the automatic torque converter transmission adapted from the BMW X5 M/X6 M?

The new V8 engine in the M5 provides maximum performance between 5,750 and 7,000 rpm. In conjunction with the specially tailored M DKG dual-clutch transmission, we use the maximum engine speed of 7,200 rpm as we move up the gears in sporty driving style to ensure that we start off in each new gear with maximum output. This is precisely what we wanted to achieve by increasing the engine speed range. An automatic torque converter is not designed for the required speeds and could not be used for this reason. In addition, only the DKG dual-clutch transmission allows you to change gears without interrupting traction. This is very important for good acceleration times… There are no disadvantages in terms of fuel consumption as this is more dependent on overall transmission ratio rather than the number of gears.
How do you get a turbocharged engine in a car to reach speeds of up to 7.200 rpm? Until recently this seemed impossible.

This isn’t so much a question of the speed of the engine or turbo-charger, after all we have already had speeds of up to approx. 14,000 rpm with the BMW Formula 1 engine. The characteristic zone of the charger in terms of pressure and volume has to be adjusted to the gas throughput of the engine. This in turn depends on the displacement, speed and required output characteristics. The principle is as follows: small chargers are good for fast responsiveness and high torque at low engine speeds, while large chargers are good for high maximum output. I think we have achieved the best possible compromise here with the new M5 in terms of responsiveness and power characteristics.

How does the cooling system work with 10 coolers?

With an output of 412kW / 560 HP, the new BMW M5 has power to spare and offers excellent driving performance. However, this enormous output creates the same level of combustion heat in all high-performance engines. In the case of the Formula 1 engine, the coolers are housed in an exposed position in the side boxes – a different solution needs to be found in the case of a sports limousine. For the new BMW M5 we have developed a tailor-made cooling package that covers all our requirements to perfection. A total of 10 coolers ensure that the temperature is kept just right, while also supporting the spontaneous response of the V8 engine.

The principle of direct or indirect charged air cooling applied to turbocharged engines. Air-to-air heat exchangers are used in the case of direct turbocharged cooling, which would have required much longer paths to the front of the car for the charged air with a lot of dead volume in our case. That’s why we use an air-water heat exchanger placed between the compressor and the intake manifold for every turbo charger. The heat generated while compressing the air is fed to three water-air coolers in the front of the car by means of the medium of water. The charge air thus takes the shortest path with a large diameter from the compressor via the charge air cooler directly to the intake channel. This improves the engine response. We have an air-water cooler and a total of three water-air heat exchangers for each cylinder bank: one radiator in the wheel arch to the left and right and one in front of the main heat exchanger. This means that a total of five coolers with their own reservoir and 2 electrically powered water pumps are used to cool the charge air.

In addition, there is the radiator for the main cooling circuit (high temperature circuit), familiar from every car. In the classic configuration, additional coolers are provided for the engine and gearbox oil and the steering hydraulics. Finally there is the condenser for the air-conditioning system. That makes ten coolers in all.
The rear axle differential has an aluminium oil tray with cooling fins so that a separate radiator is not required there. A smaller offset in the differential reduces friction and therefore the build-up of heat. Less friction means less fuel consumption here too.

What role is played by the Efficient Dynamics measures in reducing ECE normal consumption by about 30%?

Such a reduction in consumption to 9.9 l/100 km in the ECE cycle is achieved through BMW EfficientDynamics measures and an improvement in efficiency. We have already explained how this works with the rear axle differential. In the case of the engine, the variable valve control and dual variable valve timing and the high torque at low engine speed make a significant contribution. On top of this comes the automatic engine start/stop, varioserve power steering pump, volume-regulated engine oil pump, roll-resistance-optimised tyres and brake energy recovery in order to charge the battery when coasting. The entire package helps in achieving consumption targets without compromising on driving pleasure. Another benefit: when consumption is taken together with the larger tank, the vehicle’s range is significantly increased.

Why is an all-wheel drive still not an option with the BMW M5?

In view of the performance and torque of the BMW M5, this might be considered an option. However, we believe any advantage is outweighed by the disadvantages of the all-wheel drive. More weight due to four driven wheels means higher fuel consumption and a shift in the axial load in the direction of the front axle. However, we are particularly concerned with a balanced distribution of weight for the driving performance typical of the M. We also had to position the engine higher, which would have led to a higher centre of gravity.

Why wasn’t the fuel tank volume increased to even more, e.g. to 90 litres?

We made the best possible use of the space under the rear seats. That’s why a steel tank is used instead of a plastic one. Steel allowed us to achieve the same rigidity with thinner walls and enabled us to increase the tank volume from 70 to 80 litres. We genuinely fought for every millimetre. After all, safety clearances also have to be met.

The press folder reads “innovative active M differential for optimising the transfer of power to the back wheels”. What is the innovation in the BMW M5?

The variable differential lock in the previous model is controlled by the speed differential between the drive wheels. In other words, this is a passive system in which the lock is activated by different wheel speeds. This is now achieved proactively by means of an electric motor with downstream transmission and ball ramp. We use a similar package of discs which is pre-stressed by means of the electric motor. The driver’s preferences are also taken into account, i.e. when the driver accelerates, the system starts to lock, even in response to fast-changing frictional conditions, e.g. on a “patchwork” of snow and asphalt. The system also operates when the car is coasting – the lock is activated when the wheel sensors detect the relevant values. This makes for greater driving stability. A passive system does not react in this case. While a passive system always operates with pre-stress, the active lock can be completely unlocked. One advantage of the reduced friction is the reduction in fuel consumption. When the M differential lock is active, we can still start off on mountain slopes even with a 25 percent incline and extremely variable frictional values (ice/asphalt). When you are on the slope, you find it hard to believe that you will be able to start, but is really does work. This is a better alternative than walking on the ice…

What is the role played by the tyres in determining the complex chassis regulation systems?

A large part of the car’s driving performance is determined by the tyres. The force transferred when the car is in a bend, or accelerating or braking passes through the tyres. The same is true of the response from the road. Chassis adjustment and steering are at least equally important. It takes tyres that are precisely tailored to the chassis to achieve the superior driving performance associated with the BMW M5. We develop our cars in close cooperation with the tyre manufacturers and for a particular tyre type. Tyres need to meet very stringent criteria, which is why it is not easy for tyre manufacturers to receive approval from us. I would therefore advise you only to use the tyres we approve.

Why was it decided to have two M Drive buttons?

Just one button only allows two adjustment options: the basic setup when starting and the personalised M Drive button configuration. This comprises the setting options for the engine and accelerator pedal characteristic curve, DSC, EDC, M DKG, Servotronic and Head-Up Display. The M5 is now always started in Efficient and Comfort mode, in other words the best setting for fuel consumption and comfort. One M button is now permanently set to Cruise mode, i.e. an automatic setting still applies, although the engine speeds increases and combustion has not yet reached its highest point in the chassis, so that I am still travelling at a reasonable speed. The second alternative is the sporty variant, where I shift gears myself (via the steering wheel paddles or using the gear stick), activating higher damper forces, giving me greater steering forces and making the engine respond even more aggressively. Many customers will probably be happy enough with these three setups. Everybody else will find it easy to adjust the assignment of the two M keys to their needs on the basis of the permanent basic setup.

How much more output is available in Efficient mode? How do the three modes differ?

There is no difference in terms of output, however the ratio of accelerator pedal position to power development varies. In “Efficient” the characteristic curve is flatter for a more gentle use of output, while is it much steeper in “Sport plus” for a very spontaneous and direct development of performance. Thus, unlike its predecessor, the BMW M5 always has full power available as and when you need it.

How has the chassis been altered in comparison with the BMW Series 5?

The front axle has a more rigid connection to the bodywork. In addition, the track has been widened, when meant that we had to move the wings further apart. We have broadened the support base of the front axle bracket, also reinforcing it with a shear panel – a metal plate screwed onto the front axle bracket at calculated points. This means that the forces are applied to the bodywork over a large area. This increases torsional rigidity, so that the body of the car is subject to even less distortion. In terms of kinematics, the rear axle follows the excellent principle applies in the predecessor model. However, the rear axle support is rigidly connected to the body, i.e. there are no rubber bearings. This results in greater driving precision and good responsiveness. A traction field is used following the same principle as on the front axle. On the rear axle we apply forces that affect the chassis, side skirts and transmission tunnel via a package of struts. In conjunction with the hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering with variable ratio, the drive receives very precise feedback regarding the road and the car’s reaction.

How high is the maximum lateral acceleration?

Depending on the road surface and ambient conditions, it can reach levels of up to 1.2 g with our standard tyres. This is not a constant value. Irregularities and unevenness on the road mean that short peaks of up to 1.3 g can be achieved, or perhaps even a little more on the Nürburgring circuit, for example, when the tracking force is briefly increased through compression. Thus, the 1.2 g simply relates to a so-called “standard curve”.

Which detailed solutions posed the greatest challenges?

The whole is more than sum of the parts. In view of the enormous performance, the coordination of the regulating systems is a particular challenge. In the final analysis, our customers and their families should be able to discover the versatility of the BMW M5 for themselves, whatever the weather. On the other hand, the BMW M5 should also shine on the race track. Reading the press reports, I’d say we have obviously succeeded.

Official Release: BMW today revealed the first images and information about the newly updated 2013 BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupe which arrives in US BMW Centers this spring. The world’s first ever Sports Activity Coupe stills offers a unique combination of sporty dynamics, versatility and unmatched character. Select design updates and innovative features further hone the profile of the new BMW X6 as a distinctive model within the premium segment of all-wheel-drive vehicles. Its ongoing popularity is due to both its highly expressive design, which combines the athletic and elegant lines of a coupe with the unique character of a BMW X model, and the outstanding driving experience provided by two powerful engines featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and xDrive, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system. The BMW X6 continues to offer Dynamic Performance Control which gives the Sports Activity Coupe unparalleled agility for a vehicle in this segment.

Since its market launch, more than 150,000 Sports Activity Coupes have been sold globally in the last three years with over 20,000 sold here in the US. This has far exceeded the original expectations. The continuing high level of demand for the BMW X6 on worldwide markets is affirmation of the ground-breaking vehicle concept of the Sports Activity Coupe.

Striking design features front and rear, adaptive LED headlamps a new option.

Precisely modified up front give the new BMW X6 an appearance characterized by athleticism and style. The standard foglights are now set in matt finish surrounds in the upper area of the outer air inlets. Their higher and more lateral position emphasizes the width of the vehicle. The striking three-dimensional modeling of the frame and newly designed bars, angled in the lower section, make the BMW kidney grille stand out conspicuously in the vehicle’s front end. The angle of the grille bars is flush with the bottom of the headlamp units, thereby creating an additional horizontal line which likewise highlights the wide track and road-holding prowess of the new BMW X6.

As an alternative to the standard Xenon headlights, the new BMW X6 is the first vehicle in its segment to be available with adaptive LED headlights. Their bright white light ensures optimum visibility, while their high-quality appearance represents a new interpretation of the brand’s hallmark twin circular headlamps. The three-dimensionally shaped luminous rings of the adaptive LED headlights are strikingly leveled off both at the top and bottom and are overlaid at the upper edge by an LED-fed accent light. The light sources for low and high beam light are LED units positioned on a horizontal bar at its center, feeding their light into the reflectors in front. With its newly designed taillights with LED technology, the powerfully shaped rear of the new BMW X6 also features more intense styling. The taillights are now two LED-fed light banks which create the brand’s hallmark night design as a harmoniously glowing light mass. The fact that they are horizontally aligned and stretch far out to the sides emphasizes both the width of the vehicle and the flowing transition between the rear quarter and the tail-end.

Attractive new paint finishes, light alloy wheel and leather trim further enhance the new look.

The program of external paint finishes for the new BMW X6 consists of two non-metallic and nine metallic colors, including Marrakesh Brown metallic, Orion Silver metallic and Midnight Blue metallic. The standard equipment range of the new BMW X6 also includes a new 19-inch light alloy wheel style for the X6 xDrive50i.

The standard Nevada leather upholstery is now also available in Vermilion Red. Also available is a new Nappa Leather upholstery in Ivory White. The new BMW X6 comes standard as a four-seat model. A three-seat rear bench is available as an option. The luggage compartment volume of the Sports Activity Coupe is 25.6 cubic feet (570 liters) and can be extended to up to nearly 60 cu.-ft. (1,450 liters) by folding down the rear backrests.

The new BMW X6: dynamic, unparalled, efficient, innovative.

The BMW X6 will again be offered in two models in the US, the X6 xDrive50i which features BMW’s 4.4-liter 400 hp TwinPower Turbo V8 and the X6 xDrive35i with BMW’s award-winning 300 hp TwinPower Turbo inline-6. Both are mated to BMW’s 8-speed automatic transmission for a unique blend of responsiveness and efficiency.

The new M Performance Package

As an additional option, the M Performance Package is available in the US. This attractive equipment package is not just cosmetic. It includes an engine upgrade of +15hp and +30 lb-ft of torque on the X6 xDrive35i giving it 315 hp and 330 lb-ft. The increase is +40 hp +30 lb-ft of torque on the X6 xDrive50i for total peak output of 440 hp and 480 lb-ft. In addition, the M Performance Package includes 20-inch light alloy wheels, black chrome exhaust tips, stainless steel pedals, M foot rest and door sills, shadowline exterior trim, anthracite headliner, and optional Carbon Black metallic paint.

The X6 M: The Ultimate Sports Activity Coupe

As an additional product offer from BMW M GmbH, the specialists for high-performance sports cars, the BMW X6M with its V8 engine delivering 555 bhp also benefits from detailed refinements in the area of design and equipment. The BMW X6 M is fitted with a 6-speed M Sport automatic transmission, also highlighting its individual status with such features as separately developed suspension technology.

The new BMW X6: Unmatched character – refined

The BMW X6 remains unique in the industry for its blend of style, performance and versatility. The updated 2013 model refines that character ensuring the continued success of the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe.

The 2013 BMW X6 arrives in US showrooms in the spring of 2012.

Official Release: The recruitment process for the highly anticipated all-electric BMW ActiveE is now open in the metropolitan markets of Boston, Hartford, New York, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, and San Francisco. The BMW ActiveE is available by lease only at a cost of $499 per month for 24 months with a down payment of $2,250. Electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts interested in leasing the BMW ActiveE can begin the recruitment process at www.bmwusa.com/ActiveE. Vehicles are available on a first come, first served basis.

Calling All Electronauts.

The 700 BMW ActiveE lessees have been dubbed “Electronauts”. BMW Electronauts are adventurers and explorers; they are front-runners of innovation and advocates for sustainability. Most importantly, they are key participants in the BMW ActiveE Field Trial. Beginning in early 2012 and taking place in the U.S., Europe and China, the BMW ActiveE Field Trial will include more than 1,100 BMW ActiveE vehicles, produced at BMW’s plant in Leipzig, Germany. Throughout the field trial, car- and driver-generated data and anecdotal feedback from the Electronauts will be collected by BMW to deepen its knowledge about the everyday use of EVs and to provide actionable insights into electric mobility in urban environments. Once the field trial commences, information collected from the Electronauts will be made available for all EV enthusiasts and media at www.BMWActivateTheFuture.com.

In addition, the learnings from the field trial will provide direct insight into electric mobility in advance of series production of BMW’s first purpose-built, mass-produced electric vehicles, the BMW i3 in 2013 and the i8 in 2014. Concepts of the i3 and i8, the first two vehicles from the new BMW i brand, made their official North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 16 and 17, 2011.

Born Electric. Born of project i.

The introduction of the BMW ActiveE is the newest product to be born from BMW’s project i. Project i is BMW Group’s visionary, all-embracing approach to redefining the understanding of personal mobility through purpose-built vehicle concepts, a focus on sustainability throughout the value chain and a range of complementary mobility services.

It is anticipated that by 2025 the planet will be populated by 8 billion people with over half of that population living in urban metropolitan areas. The data generated from the BMW ActiveE Field Trial will not only provide BMW with the insights necessary to intelligently develop innovative and sustainable mobility solutions tailored for the growing urban population, but also to deliver even more efficient and higher performing electric vehicles worthy of the BMW moniker.

The Recruitment Process.

After filling out the reservation form on www.bmwusa.com/ActiveE, prospective lessees. will complete a charging station consultation with BMW partner AeroVironment. The purpose of the consultation is to ensure that prospective Electronaut’s homes are capable of supporting an AeroVironment charging station and participants fully understand all aspects of maintaining and charging an electric vehicle before signing a lease. Once the consultation is completed, the prospect’s information will be forwarded to their selected BMW ActiveE center to finish the lease process.

For more details on the recruitment process please visit www.bmwusa.com/ActiveE.

Official Release: No fewer than six BMW Group models have received the prestigious 2011 GOOD DESIGNTM Award: the BMW 6 Series Convertible, the BMW 6 Series Coupe, the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, the BMW ActiveE, and the two motorcycle models BMW K 1600 GT/GTL along with the BMW G650 GS. The annual GOOD DESIGNTM Award ranks as the most celebrated international accolade in the field of product design – and this year once again it honours the outstanding quality of BMW Group Design.

The world’s oldest and most esteemed design prize was founded in 1950 in Chicago by the architects Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Edgar Kaufmann Jr. is awarded by the Chicago Athenaeum and the European Centre for Architecture, Art Design and Urban Studies. For more than 60 years now, this coveted accolade has recognised exceptionally innovative and visionary products, concepts and ideas that go beyond the regular horizons of everyday product design. The aim of the award, not least of all, is to raise public awareness of contemporary design together with related issues of sustainability.

The prize is awarded based on the criteria of functionality and aesthetics as originally laid down by Saarinen and Eames, and is now complemented by an ecological aspect that stipulates sustainable design in keeping with our times. 2011 saw the independent jury of design experts and architects sifting through a record number of applications from around the world to decide their final selection of more than 500 product designs and graphics from 38 countries that were deemed worthy of the GOOD DESIGN Award.

The new BMW 6 Series Convertible combines a stretched bonnet, set-back passenger compartment, long wheelbase and flat waistline with a classic soft-top roof featuring a distinctive “fin” design. The car’s powerfully contoured surfaces and forward-surging lines are a reflection of its dynamic handling properties.

Aesthetes who delight in luxury and forward-looking technology need look no further than the new BMW 6 Series Coupe, combining as it does dynamic athleticism with exclusive travel comfort. Adaptive LED Headlights represent an innovation in lighting technology and draw on the hallmark round headlight look in a new rendition of BMW’s iconic design cues.

The new BMW 1 Series M Coupe cuts a compelling figure with its athletic demeanour and M-specific interior design. The optimised track width of the front and rear axles, an expansive front apron and powerfully flared wheel arches lend the BMW 1 Series M Coupe its unmistakable character. The two sets of chrome-plated twin tailpipes, situated at the outer edges of the rear, make for the symmetrical look familiar from M styling.

With the BMW ActiveE, an all-electric-drive BMW 1 Series Coupe, BMW is testing everyday usage of electric vehicles. The insights gleaned from this field test will flow directly into series development of the BMW i3. The intelligent configuration of the drive components and energy storage systems within the vehicle create the ideal prerequisites for customary BMW driving dynamics and extended functionality. This electric car offers four full seats, boot space of around 200 litres, rear-wheel drive and a range of approximately 160 kilometres (100 miles) in day-to-day operation.

With its BMW K 1600 GT and BMW K 1600 GTL, BMW Motorrad is tapping into a new dimension of the touring experience. Both these motorcycles present a self-assured, imposing and distinctive appearance, sparking off a hefty dose of wanderlust at first glance.

With its lean and wiry off-road physique, the BMW G 650 GS motorbike evokes an impression of lightness and adventurousness. Its characteristic enduro design and its colour concept are fully in keeping with the BMW GS family style and round off the bike’s overall sporty impression. The quality and specification of this model coupled with its long-distance comfort set it apart from the competitors.

BMW Group Design has already won the coveted design award several times in the past. Last year it was the BMW 5 Series Sedan, the MINI Countryman, the BMW S 1000 RR and the BMW Concept 6 design study that captured the prestigious prize. In 2008 honours went to the BMW 3 Series Convertible, the BMW 1 Series Coupe, the MINI Cooper S Clubman and four BMW motorcycles. Back in 2007, the jury of the GOOD DESIGN Award paid tribute to the new BMW X5, the BMW 3 Series Coupe, the new MINI and three motorcycle models.

Official Release: Title-holder BMW enters into the new season of the American Le Mans Series with a team of experienced drivers. Dirk Müller (DE) and Joey Hand (US) will represent BMW Team RLL as reigning GT champions. As in the past three seasons, Bill Auberlen (US) will also start in a BMW M3 GT. New to the team are 2001 ALMS GT champion Jörg Müller (DE) and Uwe Alzen (DE). The sixth driver will be announced at a later date.

In addition to his driving duties in the DTM in Europe, Hand will contest his fourth season with BMW Team RLL in North America. In the case of any clashes, his focus will be on the DTM programme. Alzen will bolster boss Bobby Rahal’s (US) team at the curtain-raiser to the season in Sebring (US), as well as the season ender at Road Atlanta (US). Last year, BMW won the GT drivers’ championship, the GT Team and the GT Manufacturer titles at this hard-fought season. The 2012 American Le Mans Series gets underway on 17th March at the 60th running of the iconic 12-hour race at Sebring International Raceway. Nine races later, the season ends with the Petit Le Mans in Road Atlanta (US), which will be held for the 15th time on the 20th October.

Jens Marquardt (BMW Motorsport Director):
“After winning all three titles in the GT class, BMW Team RLL will now start as the defending champion in the American Le Mans Series in 2012. We line up with the BMW M3 GT against the strong competition in this thrilling championship for the fourth time. Our goal is obviously to successfully defend the titles. The driver line-up certainly gives us every chance to achieve that goal. The reigning champions, Dirk Müller and Joey Hand, have been regular members of the team since 2009, as has Bill Auberlen. They are joined by two experienced GT drivers in Jörg Müller and Uwe Alzen. I am certain that ALMS fans can look forward to more thrilling races in 2012.”

Ludwig Willisch (President BMW of North America LLC):
“For more than 25 years North America has loved the BMW M3 and cheered every one of its many racing victories, most recently our sweep of all American Le Mans Series GT championship titles in 2011. That kind of competition proven success inspires us to return to the ALMS grid in 2012 – on the 40th anniversary of BMW M with an even stronger programme and continue to prove that BMW is indeed the ultimate driving machine.”

Bobby Rahal (Team Principal):
“We are proud to start our mission to defend the titles in the American Le Mans Series together with BMW. It is our fourth season with the BMW M3 GT and, with the 2011 titles behind us, everyone in the team is more motivated than ever. As always, we worked hard to improve even further during the winter months. The opposition will certainly not make it easy for us. However, we are well prepared. The co-operation with Dirk Müller, Joey Hand and Bill Auberlen has been very successful in recent years, and I am delighted that they will also be racing with us in 2012. Jörg Müller has already won the ALMS Driver’s championship and he and Uwe Alzen will strengthen our team. We are now preparing intensively for the official test in February, before the season really kicks off at the 12 Hours of Sebring.”

Dirk Müller:
“It’s that time again. Following our great success last season, all the other teams will obviously have their sights set on us. They will be going all out to take our titles off us. However, we have not been resting on our laurels this winter. BMW Team RLL has become something of a second family to me. In 2011, the team’s hard work really paid off. Long may it continue.”

Joey Hand:
“I am really looking forward to the ALMS. After all, it is something very special when you line up as the defending champion in a series. To win a title is one thing, but to defend it is perhaps even more difficult. BMW Team RLL has what it takes to maintain the immensely high standards it set last year. Everyone on the team is doing all they can to ensure we are successful. The fact that I will also be racing in the DTM gives me additional motivation. As a racing driver, you simply cannot spend enough time out on the track – especially at the wheel of a BMW M3.”

Bill Auberlen:
“I am pleased to return to BMW Team RLL for a fourth season and defend our GT class championships. Jörg and Uwe will be excellent additions to the line-up as they both have proven experience in the BMW M3 GT. Our test at Sebring in December showed that Bobby’s team has worked hard since Petit Le Mans and I’m confident we will be able to take on all challengers.”

Jörg Müller:
“I have nothing but good memories of the American Le Mans Series. In 2001 we also achieved a hat-trick of titles with the BMW M3 GTR, just as BMW Team RLL did last year. It is great to return to this fantastic championship after all the successful years with BMW. I am sure I will soon feel at home again on the circuits of North America.”

Uwe Alzen:
“I know the BMW M3 GT and my team-mates very well from the last two years and also gained experience in the American Le Mans Series in 2008, so I feel well primed for my starts with BMW Team RLL. The competition in the GT class is extremely fierce – and that is precisely what I am really looking forward to.”

To go along with the online configurator for the new F30 3 Series is a highly sought after companion piece. BMWNA is graciously providing a copy of the Owner’s Manual (although buried in the website) for those thinking about purchasing or that have already ordered to study. We always recommend reading the manual- it makes delivery go quicker which means break in time ends sooner…. and the less the salesperson has to do all the better.

On the coat tails of today’s big announcement about M Performance Automobiles’s this video interview Dr. Friedrich Nitschke, President of BMW M GmbH reviews the success of 2011 and gives a glimpse into 2012. Having had some great conversations with Dr. Nitschke in the past, he like his predecessor Dr. Kay Segler, has a great passion for BMW and M cars. In our discussions last year he emphatically believed that the 400 plus engineers working at M have something to offer the automotive enthusiast other brands just can’t match.

This new line of cars provides those engineers the ability to serve more customers with products that offer great performance but that are not the full on focussed M offerings (or as expensive). Some may feel this is watering down of the brand M but in reality this is M returning to its roots of offering more performance above the base car while still building the more focussed products of today such as the M3, and M5 for the most demanding customers.

The European market should see two models introduced at Geneva- the X6 M550d and the M135i.We reached to to Matthew Russell, BMWNA M Brand Manager, to see how this announcement impacts the US. He informed us that this announcement will not impact the US market within the near future.

This morning BMWNA officially revealed the pricing of the latest hybrid model, the BMW ActiveHybrid 5. Coming in at just under $62k it will arrive at dealers this Spring. The World Premier of this car was back in September so for a refresher you can see the full details here: World Premier BMW ActiveHybrid 5

Official Release: Detroit, MI – 9:00am EST January 9, 2012…

On the occasion of the North American International Auto Show, BMW today announced the retail pricing of the new 2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 5.

The M.S.R.P. will be $61,845 (including the $895 Destination and Handling charge).

Based on the BMW 535i Sedan, the ActiveHybrid 5 brings together BMW’s 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine, an electric drive system and an 8-speed automatic transmission for the first time for a combined output of 335hp. The latest generation of BMW ActiveHybrid technology also adds precisely controlled energy management to the mix. All of which gives the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 an exceptional balance of performance and fuel economy for a benchmark performance/luxury sedan.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 can operate in all-electric mode up to a speed of 37 mph (60 km/h), for zero emissions in town. The lithium-ion high-voltage battery can store sufficient energy to give an all-electric driving range of up to approximately 2.5 miles (4 km) at an average speed of 22 mph (35 km/h). Conversely, the powertrain system can combine the engine and electric motor torque to accelerate the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds.
The 2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is scheduled to arrive in US BMW Centers in late Spring 2012.

It officially official now. Though confirmed to us by sources and at the international press launch BMWNA has taken the wraps off the 6 speed manual for the new ///M5.

Official Release: Detroit, MI –9:00am EST January 9, 2012…

On the occasion of the North American International Auto Show, BMWNA officially confirmed today that it will offer a 6-speed manual transmission on the North American version of the upcoming 2013 BMW M5. The 6-speed manual will be available from the start of production this summer and will be offered as a no-cost alternative to the standard 7-speed M-Double Clutch Transmission (M-DCT). The manual gearbox was a popular choice for U.S. customers of the previous generation M5 and continues to be a unique offer in the segment.

Though the 6-speed gearbox has one less gear than the M-DCT transmission, the ratios have been optimized for acceleration, flexibility and fuel economy. Final drive ratio and special M differential are maintained. The new transmission is mated to a short throw shift linkage topped with a black leather backlit shift knob.

The 2013 M5 will arrive at US BMW Centers in late summer 2012. Pricing, options and specifications will be released closer to the on-sale date.

Today BMW rolls out a new feature to its online suite of offerings. Yelp is well known to most American consumers and the basic functionality is what you’d expect. The app allows you to tap into Yelp’s huge database of rated services. However one caveat is that this is not bundled with BMW Apps and only is available via BMW’s $99 a year Online service.

Official Release: BMW today announced that users of BMW Online in the US can now access Yelp in their vehicles. With Yelp on-board, customers can search for everything from the best local restaurants and boutiques to parking garages and banks. They are able to see ratings for those businesses while hearing reviews read out to them via the vehicle’s text-to-speech feature. With the recent update to BMW Online’s layout, BMW can seamlessly add new features (known as “applications”) as they become available. Yelp is the first such application and there will be more to follow.

Customers who subscribe to the optional BMW Assist Convenience Plan and have a navigation-equipped vehicle capable of receiving the BMW Online service will be able to add the service today, without having to make any changes to their vehicle. Yelp reviews can be accessed through the new Applications screen that is now part of BMW Online with the update which took place earlier this month.

BMW Online is just one of the many ConnectedDrive services available to BMW customers. BMW ConnectedDrive combines various elements from online applications, driver assistance, call center services and solutions for the integration of mobile devices. As a result, BMW customers are provided with an exceptional form of mobility, with more safety, more convenience, and more infotainment.

The BMW Online Yelp application has several exciting features
- Category Search – Search by category for nearby restaurants, cafes, shopping, nightlife, and more.
- Results Overview – Results are sorted by distance and star ratings, and also list category information and number of reviews.
- Details – Selecting a particular place gives more details about it. Customers can see the rating, address, distance, phone number, and information about reviews. Additionally, they can e-mail details of the business to themselves or any other e-mail address.
- Reviews – The 3 latest reviews are available for the business. The customer can select one of those reviews and have it read back automatically.

BMW Online is available exclusively to Convenience Plan subscribers on BMW Assist with on-board Navigation system on the following models:

2009 and later Z4, 1, 3 and 7 Series

2010 and later 5 and 6 Series

The BMW X3 was rated a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In order to be considered a Top Safety Pick a vehicle must receive a rating of “Good”, the Institute’s highest rating in all tests including frontal off-set crash, side impact, rear impact and roof crush. It also must have electronic stability control as standard equipment.

“Safety has always been a top priority at BMW and our vehicles have always done well in IIHS tests,” said Tom Baloga, Vice-president Engineering (US) for the BMW Group. “As well as the X3 will protect its driver and passengers in a crash we believe that it is even more important that the X3 has been engineered to help the driver avoid the crash in the first place.”

In addition to front, side and head protection airbags, the newest BMW X3 also include knee-protection airbags. Responsive handling, worthy of the Ultimate Driving Machine is further enhanced with Dynamic Stability Control and xDrive, BMW’s intelligent all-wheel drive system. An available head-up display helps keeps the driver’s eyes on the road.

The BMW X3 is available with BMW AssistTM which includes the industry’s first enhanced Automatic Collision Notification system, developed in cooperation with the William Lehman Injury Research Center in Miami, FL. In the event of a severe collision an assessment of the risk of severe injury, determined using a sophisticated set of algorithms assessing crash data, is transmitted as part of the automatic collision notification call placed to the BMW Assist emergency call center. This helps first responders to be better prepared for those first critical moments after arriving at an accident scene.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the frontal offset crash test, “Dummy movement was well controlled… Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.”

After the side impact test IIHS noted that for both the driver and rear seat passenger, “Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.” For head protection for both the driver and rear passenger the Institute found that, “The dummy’s head was protected from being hit by any hard structures, including the intruding barrier, by a side curtain airbag that deployed from the roof.”

The IIHS describes their roof strength test as follows, “To measure roof strength, a metal plate is pushed against one corner of a vehicle’s roof at a constant speed. The maximum force sustained by the roof before 5 inches of crush is compared to the vehicle’s weight to find the strength-to-weight ratio. This is a good assessment of vehicle structural protection in rollover crashes.” The BMW X3 achieved a strength-to-weight ratio of 4.69, which is higher than many of its competitors.

The second-generation BMW X3 went on sales in December 2010 and has become a sales hit. Sales of the X3 in the US this year-to-day are 24,261 to the end of November. This represents a stunning 364% improvement over X3 sales over the same period of 2010.

The BMW X3 is one of three finalists for North American Truck of the Year.

Official Release: The launch campaign for the new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé, which will make its world debut at the Geneva International Motor Show on 6 March 2012, showcases the vehicle’s exclusive positioning with impressive aesthetics. BMW’s first four-door coupé boasts trendsetting design, sporting dynamics and exclusive elegance.

The cross-media campaign features a total eclipse of the sun as its central theme: a graceful but, at the same time, breath-taking natural phenomenon that reveals the pure beauty of nature to its observers for a brief moment. “Beauty. Revealed.” is also the motto of the new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé campaign, which combines the unique moment of a total solar eclipse with this exclusive vehicle.

“The new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé marks the beginning of a new chapter. It is BMW’s first four-door coupé and combines uncompromising driving dynamics with exclusive elegance and breath-taking design,” commented Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, head of BMW brand communications: “The campaign uses the image of a solar eclipse to highlight the model’s uniqueness.”

The global campaign will launch in print and TV media in the second quarter 2012. The print ads also feature the natural phenomenon of a total eclipse of the sun in aesthetic and artistic visuals, while the text also highlights the special nature of the moment. Headlines such as “Some things are worth waiting for” underline the rare beauty and timeless fascination of the new coupé. A total of seven different motifs showcase the vehicle’s aesthetic dynamics. The images for the print campaign were shot by the German photographer Georg Fischer.

The TV commercial shows the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé from three different angles. It begins with a total eclipse of the sun, the contours of the model barely recognisable. As the eclipse progresses, the new coupé gradually becomes more visible, until its full beauty is finally revealed in the daylight. The viewer is mesmerised by the uniqueness of the moment as the tension mounts. London-based director Sam Brown, whose creativity is already familiar from global-release music videos, such as James Blunt’s “Goodbye My Lover” and “You’re Beautiful”, was responsible for production. The music for the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé TVC is taken from the original song “New Dawn Fades” by Moby.

The first online activities have already been launched on the BMW homepage www.bmw.com and www.facebook.com/bmw. Users can sign up for more information by clicking on a “Keep informed” button on the BMW homepage to receive news directly. An online video discusses the engine technology and design concept behind the car. The designers responsible for the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé present the four-seater’s exterior and sophisticated interior. Sporty seats in the rear and high–quality materials ensure that the interior retains its exclusive appearance throughout. The online video can also be viewed on the BMW TV site and the BMW Channel on YouTube and Facebook.

I have been drafting a post on why your car should be wearing snow tires in winter since I made a joke about xDrives and summertires a day or so ago… Well BMW beat me to the punch by releasing an “official” get your car the proper tires communication. It hits home on all the points for winter tires.

We recommend you shop around for the best deal you can or see if you can get prices matched as there tends to be a huge swing in prices with tires. There are run flat options available, including the pictured Dunlop M3 Winter tire- which I have used in a variety of applications over the last half dozen years or so.

Official Release: Do you wear Flip Flop or Sandals in the winter? – From your tires point of view, winter starts at 45 ° F.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – December 15, 2011…

Like flip flops and sandals, summer and all-season tires are not the best in winter weather, especially if walking / driving on icy and snow packed roads. In contrast, boots and Cold weather tires have treads with more biting edges for better grip on snow and ice, while their softer compound remains flexible even in extremely low temperatures using specialized rubber compounds and tread designs to handle the cold temperatures.
Drivers that regularly encounter ice, unplowed snow, or slush, will need Cold weather tires (also known as “snow tires”) that will give that extra traction, braking and handling needed to confidently drive on snow and ice. Tests conducted on ice show that even at 15mph, vehicles equipped with cold weather tires stopped from 1/2 to a full car length shorter than identical vehicles on summer and all season tires. Without cold weather tires vehicles are more likely to fishtail on corners and spin out in snow and icy conditions.

The impact of cold weather can be felt on summer/performance tires as soon as temperatures drop to just 45°F, according to the tire experts at BMW. Rubber compounds quickly stiffen, contributing to slipping, skidding and an overall reduction in vehicle performance. According to Craig Westbrook, Vice President of Aftersales at BMW “the summer/performance tires that come on many of our vehicles with optional sport packages are designed for handling and performance on normal road conditions. Customers driving in geographic areas that experience these colder temperatures and or winter conditions should think about installing cold weather tires on their BMW”.
BMW Centers take a proactive approach in educating drivers — even BMW SAV owners and vehicles with xDrive — on the safety and performance benefits of cold weather tires, regardless of road conditions.

Why BMW Approved Cold Weather Wheels & Tires?

Formulation — BMW Approved Cold Weather Tires’ carefully formulated mix of compounds actively generates heat, so tires reach optimum operating temperature faster.
Design — Larger tread blocks and open channels provide more traction in ice and snow while reducing the risk of skidding on wet roads.
Safety — Increased levels of grip reduce hydroplaning and can shorten braking distances as much as 20% compared to summer/performance tires.
Local BMW Centers are the experts to consult when choosing Cold Weather Tires and wheel combinations for BMW vehicles and some dealers even store their customer’s summer tire and wheel sets while providing the very best value in service to conduct the semiannual seasonal tire / wheel exchange.

Schedule a visit to your local BMW Center to take advantage of the BMW Cold Weather Tire Program.
