Outside of Atlanta sit two BMW M3s, they are not your ordinary run of the mill E92s though- these are extraordinary cars. They are known the world over as number 90 and 92. Both they and their drivers are prepping for a grueling 1,000-mile race that will test both man and machine a week from today.
Petit Le Mans will mark the end of BMW Rahal Letterman Racings second season competing in the American Le Man Series. While typical first year teething issues and gremlins plagued last season, this year has seen the drivers waving their Dunlop hats from the top of the podium. The year has not been all roses as both cars at one point or another have been taken off the track by flatbed and we will never forget the unfortunate passing of one of the teams biggest supporters; Jack Pitney. It has been an emotional roller coaster of a year for a team that has podiumed in eight consecutive races.
Some may have noticed that I recently had the honor of being a USA Networks Character, many thanks to all those that emailed in your congratulations. The thirty second spot above aired on several occasions during the new hit series Covert Affairs, which by no coincidence BMW is a sponsor of.
After being cast as myself, editor here at BimmerFile, came the job of me telling my BMW story in a 30 second time frame. That may sound easy to some but it was near impossible for me.
The guys over at Everyday Driver TV are in need of some serious help from us BMW drivers.
They have arranged a comparison of the E92 BMW 335i coupe, the fugly new Cadillac CTS coupe and the Audi A5 2.0L but they have a huge problem on their hands. They have secured the other two cars but have yet to nail down the BMW.
A wrap-up is coming this week with results and tons of photos.
Things will be a little quiet this weekend at BF as myself and a few frequent contributors are heading to Michigan for this weekend’s 24 Hours of LeMons at the Gingerman road course.
This is our second race (see a recap of our first race last year) and I have to admit I’m feeling pretty confident a decent showing. Out of respect for the rules of LeMons (cars can’t cost more than $500 including upgrades) I can’t say what we’ve covertly upgraded or replaced, but lets just say we’ve made some changes (yes those rear wheels are OZ Ultraleggeras off of a MINI)
We also managed to talk BMW into giving us what could be the ultimate team support car, the new 550 GT (we would have loved a X5 M but alas the scheduling Gods weren’t with us.

Over the next few weeks we expect the automotive industry to slowly come out of its late December combo to prepare for what still is the largest automotive event in the US: NAIAS. However this year we’ll be covering the show from every angle. Todd, Matt and myself be there to not only report from the floor but bring you the designers, executives, and insiders through a series of show floor BimmerCasts. Look for full galleries of the entire show as well.
The fun starts on January 11th where BMW will be showing off the ActiveE, Z4 35is, F10 5 Series and just about everything else you would expect and imagine. We’ll see you from the show floor in just under two weeks.
We’d like to wish everyone happy holidays as we close out 2009. It’s been an incredible year at BimmerFile and we owe it all to you the readers. We’ll be taking the next few days off (or at least trying to) as we gear up for next week, next year and of course the Detroit Auto Show. So until then, thanks and cheers!
While we’ve tweaked quite a bit under the hood, the most obvious change is the new (much) wider layout. With average screen sizes getting bigger (seemingly) by the month we’ve decided to aim high and design the site for 1280 px monitors. The big benefit with this new design is the ability to see photos and video at 640 pixels wide. There are still some small nip and tucks we’ll be working on over the next few days so bear with us. Also look for some further substantial changes in the coming months.
BimmerFile is dedicated to bringing you the most interesting news, links and reviews related to the BMW brand and it's vehicles.
We believe in the old school BMW ownership experience. We believe in garage nights with a six pack and some friends. We believe in 2002s, in E30 M3s and E34 540s with the 6 speed. We believe in progress in both design and engineering but we haven't lost sight of what made the brand and its products great all those years ago. And yes, we believe in the manual transmission.
We long for the days of the wave and for the days of roll-up windows. Yet we love the gadgets on the inside and the xenons on the outside.
In short, we can't get enough of BMWs. This is BimmerFile.
