After a long day of interviews at the North American International Auto Show Todd and Matt caught up with BMWNA’s M Boss Matthew Russell with an impromptu interview that covered a range of topics. First up we talk 3 Series and the fact that the NAIAS this year is all about 3er. But then we quickly move onto the M5 and why Mr. Russell loves the X5M but thinks the M5 is hands-down the best car in the world.

Then things move onto the 1M and Todd asked the big question; will we ever see a 1M again? Mr. Russell clearly admits that M took notice of the excitement around the 1M but no promises have or will be made any time soon.

What about the US Alpina range that Russell also heads? Will we see something more than a B7 that’s currently in the US market? Russell would like to see some new offerings – especially something like the diesel powered D3. There’s also clearly more that can be done on the 5 and 6 series platform and Russell doesn’t want to rule anything there either. But at this time there’s nothing to confirm.

It’s a quick show but one we’re sure you’ll enjoy.

But it was the race for second that caught out attention.

With all the noise today on AWD M cars on the interwebs today, we thought it was worth mentioning our position again. As we’ve already said once this spring, nothing is set in stone. While M is working on new AWD technologies, we don’t expect anything in the near future outside of any new SAV based M car.

Through various sources it’s become clear that M has plans to expand it’s line-up from the traditional 3-4 products. Crucial to this are the X5 and X6 M twins. With the Chinese, Russian and Brazilian markets showing dramatic appetite for big M cars, it’s clear that there’s a lot of market share to gain and profit to be hand. For instance China’s M sales grew 355% alone last year. That kind of number doesn’t go unnoticed in Munich.

Because of this M is likely looking to add another M SAV to the mix. However whether that’s an X3, the forthcoming X4 and even a hot version of the X1 is still up in the air. There’s even talk of a X1 iS has to help bridge the gap. But the future story of M is also about getting back to its basics and not forgetting about the enthusiasts that they’ve traditionally relied on.

<img src="http://www.bimmerfile.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/P90074949-640x426.jpg" alt="" title="P90074949" width="640"

Currently M is looking at two proposals for future sports cars with one being (according to sources) very limited. Our guess is that limited model would be a Z4M based on the GT3 race car. The other (and perhaps even more appealing) would be a car based on 1 and 3 Series architecture that would have a front mid-mounted or even pure mid-engined set-up that would be completely unique to M. As you might expect the car would slot agains the Porsche Boxster and Cayman in terms of size and performance. But even more interesting is that M is toying with the idea of an AWD system that our sources believe is similar to what is found on the Ferrari FF. What ever wheels are driven this would be the first M car without a standard ‘series’ equivalent since the original M1. Bold move for M but one that clearly signals that M is serious about building sports cars.

But what about the core products; the M3 and M5. The M5 is still a bit of a mystery to us as far as weight savings technologies but we do know the twin turbo V8 will have around 560 hp. However in our mind, it’s the M3 that stands the best chance at being in sync with the less is more philosophy. Going from a V8 to an twin turbo inline six and making liberal use of weight savings techniques, we expect the next generation M3 to deliver more power but weigh in no heavier than the current car. More specifically we expect a greater emphasis on weight savings techniques than any other mass produced M car to this point. How is M going to accomplish this?

Enter BMW i. BMW M won’t have blind eye to the other BMW sub-brand in the coming years. As with other parts of the BMW Group, M will slowly start sharing technology from Project i. In fact this has already taken place as the air curtains on the 1M show us. We expect BMWi’s expertise in Carbon Fiber design and construction to ultimately make their way to the next generation of M cars. Look for a Carbon Fiber concept M3 later this fall to signal some of this thinking.

With all this long-range planning going on behind the scenes the next six months will still be a busy for M. This June they’ll be officially showing off the BMW M3 GTS Sedan (name is TBA & no it’s not coming to the US) and following it up with the production version of the M5 at the IAA in Frankfurt. From there we’ll see the M6 and perhaps one more very special M3 next year.

Our man on the inside Herr26 helped with this report.

Portions of the article below are taken from the official release.

BMW M GmbH is reporting some impressive figures for 2010 despite the M5 and M6 being discontinued for the year. Despite this, the number of BMW M car sales rose by 14.2 percent to 16,967 units. Overall, worldwide growth in demand for high-performance sports cars, M Sport packages, exclusive special options from BMW Individual as well as driving experience training courses contributed to this positive development. Considerable growth impulses are also anticipated for 2011 thanks to an extended M Sport package and BMW Individual product range and the launch of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé, which takes the company into a new vehicle segment. Beyond this, the development of special task and security vehicles based on current BMW production models will also fall within the remit of BMW M GmbH in future.

The 14.2 percent global growth in new car registrations posted by the BMW AG subsidiary last year bears witness to the enduringly interest in high-performance sports cars. The production phase-out of the BMW M5 and BMW M6 models was more than compensated for by a consistently high demand for the BMW M3 and the newly introduced all-wheel-drive models BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M.

As expected the M3 lead the way in sales. Worldwide, 5,729 units of the BMW M3 Coupé were sold, to which were added 2,544 units of the BMW M3 Convertible and 1,843 BMW M3 Saloons. Sales of the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M totalled 2,778 and 3,082 respectively.

It’s a bit of a shock to see the sedan only sell 1,843 compared to the X6 M which sold close to twice that. Clearly M knew what they were doing when they made the decision to break their own rules and create the new high performance SAVs.

The most important single market in 2010 was once again the USA, where overall BMW M car sales rose by more than 6 percent to 6,821. The number two sales region, as before, was the German domestic market with sales of 1,716 cars, followed by Britain and Northern Ireland with 1,264 units. The most dynamic growth by far was seen in the Chinese car market, where sales rose by 355 percent to 1,088 units, making China the fourth-strongest market for BMW M cars. BMW M GmbH also registered outstanding growth rates in Brazil (+ 237 percent) and Russia (+ 104 percent).

M Sport packages: growth in sales, range to expand in 2011.

In terms of sales of the M Sport packages – now available for virtually all the model ranges – BMW M GmbH also recorded positive growth of the popular M Sport packages last year. The packages (now available virtually across the entire line-up) consists of M developed aerodynamics, chassis, exterior and interior components. The spectrum currently ranges from the BMW 1 Series to the BMW 7 Series, and also encompasses the BMW Z4 and the BMW X5. 2011 will see the BMW X3 and BMW X1 models added to the list.

In total, the number of M Sport packages produced in 2010 rose by 1 percent to 138,800. The main market for M Sport packages was Britain and Northern Ireland, followed by Germany and the USA. These markets once again posted a growth in figures for 2010, with the biggest percentage increases shown by the Korean car market (+ 411 percent) and China (+ 125 percent) and Russia (+ 107 percent).

But lets look at the total sold again; 138,800. That is more than eight times more units sold than actual M cars. So in effect you’re eight times more likely to see an M Sport BMW of some kind than an actual M car.

BMW Individual boasts the strongest growth rates.

BMW Individual (run by BMW M) saw a significant jump in the demand for highly exclusive special options. Over the course of the year, production was ramped up to 24,155 options, with which the relevant cars were specifically enhanced based on personal preferences. This amounts to a growth rate of 47 percent.

Germany, which continues to be the most important single market for the BMW Individual program, posted growth of 16 percent. Following a 119 percent leap, the USA now constitutes the second most important sales region. Demand for BMW Individual products experienced exceptionally dynamic growth in China (+ 275 percent) and Russia (+ 182 percent).

BMW Group Driving Experience proves ever more popular.

The BMW Group’s Driving Experience programme also met with heightened interest in 2010. The number of participants rose by 21 percent to 12,945 – a unique achievement in the German marketplace. This programme, devised and organised by BMW M GmbH, covers BMW Driving Experience and MINI Driving Experience. The options range from short courses for beginners all the way to adventure tours and track training for motor sport fans. Experienced instructors convey target group-oriented know-how for self-assured driving.

It was above all the Experience courses of the BMW Group Driving Experience programmes that reflected a steep rise in demand with figures swelling by 69 percent. Efficient Dynamics Training in conjunction with safety exercises, introduced in 2008, likewise enjoyed growing popularity in 2010. The number of participants keen to learn more about economical as well as safe driving rose by 27 percent. The restructured programme for BMW Motorrad Training also triggered a boost in interest: the expanded programme led to a 208 percent increase in participants.
BMW M GmbH: top performance for special requirements – now for special task and security vehicles as well.

A further important aspect of the BMW Group Driving Experience scheme is the special training of drivers of BMW security vehicles. BMW Security Training teaches drivers of armoured and unarmoured vehicles to carry out challenging manoeuvres with confidence, to master all kinds of tricky situations with practised skill and to convey passengers to their destination in safety and comfort. Around 200 participants signed up for this course in 2010.

2011 sees BMW M GmbH extending its sphere of responsibility to include the development of security vehicles as well as special task vehicles for government authorities and public bodies. With this fifth business area, BMW M GmbH gains new possibilities for utilising and further expanding its more than 30-year experience in customer-led individualisation of vehicles – all the way to building one-off models. In a similar way to the high-performance sports cars from BMW M GmbH, these security and special task vehicles are also built as part of an integral development process that is guided by specific customer requirements and that ensures that these specifications are reconciled with maximum everyday utility and with the stringent quality and safety standards of premium carmaker BMW.

BMW security vehicles guarantee effective and tailored protection from criminal attacks and other hazardous situations. The current range includes security vehicles in various protection classes, all of which come with certification in compliance with internationally recognised standards. The protective equipment forms an integral part of the relevant vehicle concept. Unlike retrofit security measures, this principle ensures that all components are perfectly adapted to the relevant model. For example, an armoured passenger cell provides protection for the whole interior that covers all joints and seams. When it comes to the suspension tuning, too, the specific attributes of the security vehicle – including extra weight – are taken into account from the outset. Plus, all specific equipment details comply with the high quality and safety requirements of the BMW Group. Another advantage of this integrated development process is that the design of the vehicle is not affected by the implementation of security features. At first glance BMW security models are indistinguishable from production models and are therefore particularly discreet when out on the road.

2011 looks even more promising for BMW M with the introduction of the 1M to the marketplace happening this Spring and the M5 concept following shortly afterwards.

Let’s get a few things straight; the sun was out and the pavement was as dry as could be. As I entered the corner I thought about that torque vectoring system I had read so much about (and felt in the X6 50i we tested last year). I knew what it was capable of and I knew very well the X5 M had moved the goal posts even further. Exactly where that limit was I didn’t quite know.

Yet here I was entering a 90 degree turn with substantial speed on a desolate rural road in the heart of Wisconsin. I simply turned in smoothly and began to feel the impossible. The 5,000 lbs BMW X5 M started to oversteer. And I’m not talking a little wiggle. The M Division’s first AWD vehicle actually drifted out of the corner and then elegantly got back in line (with appropriate correction) for the next 90 degree coming up in 300 feet.

This article was suppose to be a thrashing of the X5 M as an overweight impostor to the hallowed M brand. But that begs the question of how do you even measure what M is? While the answer is inevitably personal, there are a few core ingredients that we can all agree on. Power, balance and precision. However thanks to the X5 M, the scale of which we measure those attributes has just shifted. Is it a true M based on tradition? Can a vehicle with all wheel drive, turbos and an automatic transmission be mentioned in the same breath as the E30 M3 or the original M Coupe? After 1,000 miles in seven days the answer is a little complicated, but during those few seconds in that corner it was nothing but pure joy in the most raw “M” way.

So we’ve thrown around the 5,000 lbs figure (it’s actually 5,368 lbs). Yes, the X5 M is heavy. The wizards at the M Division have actually done an amazing job masking all that weight. The delicacy in the steering is almost shocking considering the mass behind the wheel. However, it’s still a big vehicle and there’s little question that it can’t match an M5 in overall driving experience. The crazy thing is that while it doesn’t have the tactile quality of the E60 M5, it actually feels faster.

The twin turbo V8 at the heart of the X5 M is a technological tour de force. The basic design is based on the twin turbo V8 in various current BMWs. Turbos in the V and twin scroll turbos keep power as constant as possible. The engine may be massive but it’s even more massively powerful. 555 hp and 500 lbs of torque make 0-60 come up in a shocking 4.5 seconds. The truth is, it feels even faster.

Then there’s the sound. Like any M car it has the endearing habit of starting a little rough when completely cold. The engine sounds almost stressed. Like a cheetah’s strange gait while merely walking, it feels like the X5 M isn’t completely happy idling. I hope this is intentional. If not I hope that M never spends time to “fix” this issue.

Once you get going the aural pleasures get more interesting. There is the sound of turbos spooling from time to time but there is also a wonderful series of backpressue pops on overrun. After that it all gets a little weird with what can only be describes as flatulence. Yup. It’s hard to describe it any other way. It ultimately became endearing and part of the character of the car. It’s certainly not the classic sounds we’ve gotten use to with the E46 M3 or the E90 M3.

While the power and performance is admittedly shocking for such a large car, it’s the (relative) efficiency that’s eyebrow raising. Consider this; the X5 M weighs over 2,500 lbs more than the M3 and has over 130 more hp. Yet despite all of that it’s rated at 13 mpg city and 18 mpg highway – just one and two mpg off the much lighter and less powerful M3. Ok, efficiency may not be the right word. But clearly the M division has a win win situation on its hands with this new approach of twin turbo-charging.

Yet it’s the engine that is one of the biggest departures of the M brand. First off M cars are not turbo-charged. Or at least that’s something M has been preaching for years. However, with efficiency regulations closing in around the company it’s clear something had to change. So the engineers at M have created an exceptionally quick revving large turbo-charged powerplant that shocks you with torque (500 ft lbs) and surprises you with it’s ability to pull strong all the way to it’s (relatively) high redline of 7000 rpm.

The two things that define this engine for me are the 500 ft lbs of torque available at 1500 rpm and how quick the mill runs up to redline. The combination of the two produce acceleration that is (in the real world) M5 rivaling. In fact we’ve heard rumors that the X5 M is actually faster around the ‘Ring than the E60 M5. BMW will likely never admit that of course.

The technology behind the engine and the drivetrain is astonishing as compared to what M cars had just a few years ago. BMW beefed up the drivetrain and added cylinder deactivation between shifts to lessen the blow to the transmission. The result is a barrage of pops and flatulent sounds from the exhaust that is strangely aggressive. But why deactivate cylinders when accelerating? Simple; the torque and overall dead weight of 5,000+lbs would break something very expensive before the massive tires (325 mm in the rear) would spin free.

What about the balance and feel part of the M equation? It’s no shock that the X5 M doesn’t have the delicacy the best M cars posses. Sure there is more feeling here than any thing else in the sport crossover field (that I’ve driven) but the brilliant engineers at M can’t defy physics that much. In the end it’s a connection to the experience of driving that M cars are so often judged and in this regard the X5 M has a hard time living up to the brand character.

Part of the problem is the transmission. Unlike any M car before it (the US Spec E36 notwithstanding) the X5 M is equipped with a no apologies six speed automatic. And while it’s the fastest shifting torque converter automatic I’ve ever driven (it’s almost as fast as the DCT in the M3) it’s still an auto and lacks aural and mechanical feedback of a manual or even a DCT.

One test note; our car had a noticeable driveline shudder from 2nd to 3rd throughout the week long test. If that was not bad enough, it often shifted from 1st to 2nd without any driver input (while in manual mode) There are few things more damning to the enthusiast driver than a transmission with a mind of its own. It was absolutely disheartening every time. As an enthusiast I want a car (especially an M car) that responds to driver input. Even if the car allows for complete control 95% of the time, as a driver I’m left feeling a little less confident knowing that the brains behind the beast can’t be completely overridden. We’re not 100% sure if this was an issue with software, hardware or just normal operation, but it clearly wasn’t ideal. (Other X5 Ms we have spent time behind the wheel in did not display the same characteristics)

Transmission aside; the engine and it’s all-wheel drive system is simply incredible. M leveraged BMW’s incredible torque vectoring xDrive system for the X5 M to great effect. As we mentioned upfront, when pushed the X5 M goes from neutral to oversteer. The set-up allows for incredible grip levels while allowing the driver a level of control that is nothing less than shocking a vehicle this big. How is it accomplished? It’s one part suspension set-up and another clever electronics. All the same magic that allows an X6 to take corners faster than it has a right to is combined with other tricks supplied exclusively by M engineers. The result is nothing like any crossover I’ve ever driven and (dare we say it) could even be called M like.

Like the current M3 the X5 M also has user programmable drivetrain function that allow the driver to tailor the experience both on default and with the M button enabled. The differences in the settings aren’t quite as dramatic as they are on the M3 but it’s a nice touch nonetheless.

Stopping all of this maddness are 15.6/15.2 inch ventilated disc (front and rear respectively). They do the job with little drama and exceptional pedal feel.

Where does that leave the X5 M? You get the sense that automotive writers have fallen into two camps on the car. There are those that have fallen in love with the utility and the performance while anointing it the best sporty crossover in the world. Then there are those that claim the idea of a sporty crossover is so out of touch with all that is real and authentic with the M brand that they can’t help but call it a failure. Nevermind the gem of an engine and the almost magical torque vectoring all wheel drive system.

Where does that leave BimmerFile? Honestly I wanted to completely pan the X5 M. I wanted to call a spade a spade and disregard it’s performance while focusing on the ridiculousness of the size, price and position as an M vehicle. Yet I can’t. The truth is that there is no denying the X5 M has been touched by the magic of M in enough of the right ways. While I can’t call it a true M car in the classic sense (as even M subtly admits with the official naming convention) I can call it the M of crossovers.

So it’s fast, handles impeccably and sounds raw. Does it harm the hallowed M brand? Probably a little. Will they make money off of it and allow for cars like the upcoming 1M? Based on what we’ve heard from sources the answer is a resounding yes. And when judged on all of this criteria, it’s hard to not call the X5 M a measured success.

This week we start off talking about what we’re both driving and reviewing starting with the X5 M (hate the transmission, surprisingly love the car) and then moving onto the F10 550i (better in every way over the E60).

Another week means another couple stories worth of 1M rumors and many more details. So we touch on what we expect with the new baby M and when we expect it (hint; it’s looking pretty damn good). What about production? Will it be easy to get one? The easy answer is sort of.

We then take some time to recap my recent trip to Munich and BMW’s new environmental testing center and talk about what it means for BMW’s products and those plastic and swirl clad test cars we’ve grown to love.

With several erroneous stories out there about the just announced X5 M recall, we thought it was our duty get a little clarity around the issue and answer some of your questions. So we spoke with with Matthew Russell (from BMW Product & Technology Communications department) about the recall and what exactly is behind it.

BimmerFile: First off what product is affected:

BMWNA: 2010 BMW X5 M SAVs produced between 7/1/09 and 1/25/10. Approximately 735.

BF: What’s the issue exactly?

BMWNA: The affected vehicles were not equipped with the power supply cables for the front side marker lamps (lamps are located in the outer corner of the headlight cluster).

BF: What can happen?

BMWNA: The front side marker lamps will not illuminate.

BF: Does this affect the ability to signal for turns?

BMWNA: No. Turn signal and hazard light operation are not affected.

BF: Can customers continue to drive their vehicles?

BMWNA: Yes, but BMW recommends that owners of affected vehicles, who will receive a letter asking them to schedule an appointment with their Authorized BMW SAV center, do so as soon as they receive the notification letter.

BF: How will customers be informed of the recall?

BMWNA: Owners of affected vehicles will receive a letter via First Class mail asking them to make a Service appointment with their Authorized BMW SAV center. The letters should go out in May 2010, or once the parts have been distributed to dealers. The repair may take up to four hours. Additional time may be required depending on the center’s scheduling and processing. The repair is free of charge.

Thanks Matt! So there you have it. The issue, while enough to warranty a recall is not a serious safety problem and certainly not serious enough to immediately stop driving the vehicles.

The Side View system comprises two cameras integrated in the side of the front bumpers, which means that intersecting traffic can be observed. The images from these cameras are shown on the Control Display of the operating system iDrive, providing an advance view of the road situation to the left and right of the vehicle when coming out of blind exits such as narrow driveways or multi-storey car parks, for example. Speed Limit Info gives the driver the possibility of finding out about speed restrictions on the current route. Here, a camera is installed on the windscreen in the area of the interior mirror which permanently monitors signs at the roadside as well as the variable displays on overhead gantries on motorways, comparing this information with the data from the navigation system. The figure thus obtained is displayed by means of a symbol on the instrument panel or in the Head-Up Display, as required.

Newly designed rear lights with especially narrow bands of light in the reversing lamps provide an enhanced sense of width in the BMW X5 M. Their homogeneously luminous light banks fed by LED also create a nocturnal design which is characteristic of the brand. They are now also fitted with dynamic LED brake lights which flash in the event of particularly intense deceleration, thereby providing a warning signal for drivers to the rear.

As you may have picked up from our recently posts, BMW is being very aggressive with changing to relatively new models across the range this spring. So aggressive in fact that they’ve decided to begin 2011 model year starting with Spring production of most models. Some highlights:

The M3 Competition Package is real and includes 10 mm lower suspension, 19” M3 GTS wheels, remapped Electronic Damping Control and Dynamic Stability Control systems.

X5 now comes with the N55 single turbo inline six

BMW has introduced value packages to the aging 1 and 3 series models

Most models equipped with the twin turbo N54 inline six will be transitioning to the N55 single turbo for 2011.

Most vehicles receive minor changes for MY2011 in the form of options and new or revised packages, but some models are either all-new (for example, the new BMW 5 Series sedan and BMW ALPINA B7) or substantially updated (3 Series Coupe and Convertible). For existing models, what will not change for the start of the MY2011 are base Manufacturer Suggested Retail Prices. You can get all the details for the entire range in the official release below:

BMW NA to Extend “Value Packages” for 1 and 3 Series Models

Official Release: In 2009, BMW introduced a “Value Package” – a $0.00 (No Charge) option that included leather upholstery and the integrated iPod adapter on the 5 Series and 328i/xi Sedans. As expected, the Value Package proved to be very popular, and as such, the concept is being extended to additional models. The $0.00 Value Package again includes leather upholstery and the iPod adapter as its key components but may also include several additional options, depending on the model.

BMW NA Creates New “Convenience Package” Available for 1 and 3 Series

Throughout 2009 BMW spent time talking to Dealers and Client Advisors about possible ways to improve our option offering and the value of our package structure. Based on this feedback from Dealers and Client Advisors on, BMW has developed “Convenience Package” for the 1 and 3 Series for MY 2011. This package brings considerable value to a number of options that share the theme of Convenience and are typically ordered together anyway. The Convenience Package content varies depending on the model but always includes the Alarm System, Comfort Access (keyless entry) and Park Distance Control. It retails for as low as $1,000 on the 135i Coupe and Convertible.

Beginning with MY2011 production, most models currently utilizing the twin turbo inline 6 cylinder N54 engine will switch to the new single twin-scroll inline 6 cylinder N55 engine. The new engine shares the same aluminum block as the previous engine but now uses a new cylinder head with BMW VALVETRONIC combined with a single twin scroll type turbo to deliver faster response and more efficiency. The performance figures remain the same at 300hp and 300 lb-ft torque but the efficiency improves by an impressive 7%. The new engine will be installed in the 135i Coupe and Convertible, the 335i Sedan, Coupe and Convertible, the new 535i Sedan when it arrives later this year, the 535i Gran Turismo arriving this spring and finally, the X6 xDrive35i.

The 300hp version of the twin-turbo N54 engine will continue to be offered in the Z4 sDrive35i and upgraded versions of the N54 will power the 740i/Li, Z4 sDrive35is, and the 335is Coupe/Convertible.

1 Series Coupe/Convertible

The 2011 BMW 1 Series Coupe goes on sale this April with several improvements. In addition to the Value and Convenience Packages described above, the Cold Weather Package has been enhanced with a heated steering wheel and the retail price has been increased $150 from $600 to $750. A Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces the HiFi System Professional with no change in retail price ($875). In line with the very sporty nature of the 135i Coupe/Convertible, the 7-speed Double Clutch Transmission (DCT) replaces the STEPTRONIC automatic transmission with an option price of $1,575. The STEPTRONIC 6 speed automatic transmission will continue to be available on the 128i Coupe/Convertible for a retail price of $1,375.
Base MSRP (including $875 Destination & Handling) for all the 1 Series models remain unchanged for MY2011. The 128i Coupe and 135i Coupe start at $30,025 and $36,925, respectively. The 128i Convertible and 135i Convertible start at $35,075 and $41,225, respectively.

3 Series Sedan

The 2011 BMW 3 Series Sedan goes on sale this spring, and each model features changes worthy of mention. Headlining the news is BMW’s all-new 300hp inline-6 engine for the 335i Sedan. BMW’s enthusiast-celebrated 6-speed manual transmission remains standard, and the 6-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission remains optional for $1,375. New shift paddles (left-shift down, right-shift up) for the STEPTRONIC may be added to the Sport steering wheel for $100 when the $2,150 Sport Package is ordered.
For the first time since its introduction, the BMW 335d Sedan is now available with the

M Sport Package for $3,750. On all 3 Series models, the optional Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces BMW’s HiFi Professional System.

The 328i Sedan and 335i Sedan start at $34,025 and $41,475, respectively, including $875 Destination & Handling. The 328i xDrive Sedan and 335i xDrive Sedan start at $36,025 and $43,475, respectively, including Destination & Handling. The 335d Sedan featuring BMW Advanced Diesel technology with BluePerformance starts at $44,825, including the 6-speed automatic transmission and Destination & Handling.

3 Series Sports Wagon

The 2011 3 Series Sports Wagon goes on sale this spring with an MSRP of $36,575 for the 328i Sports Wagon, and $38,575 for the 328i xDrive (all-wheel drive) Sports Wagon. New for MY2011 is the $2,350 Convenience Package, which includes Alarm System, Comfort Access, ultrasonic Park Distance Control, and BMW’s Xenon adaptive headlights. On all
3 Series models, the optional Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces BMW’s HiFi Professional System. Also for 2011, Vermillion Red exterior paint replaces Barbera Red, and Deep Sea Blue replaces Monaco Blue metallic exterior paint.

3 Series Coupe

BMW has substantially updated the 3 Series Coupe for model year 2011. Headlining the changes are new headlights and tail lights, a new hood and kidney grille, new side skirts, new wheels, and new front and rear fascias. On all 3 Series models, the optional Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces BMW’s HiFi Professional System. Also, as part of the update, BMW has made new Bamboo Anthracite Wood trim available on the interior.

Perhaps the biggest news for enthusiast coupe drivers is the arrival of the BMW 335is Coupe. This high-performance model features BMW’s award-winning twin-turbocharged inline-6 (N54), with output of 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. A special overboost function permits a temporary torque increase to 370 lb-ft. Cooling the extra heat generated by the increased power is a standard oil cooler and an extra water cooler (radiator), as well as the enormous front air ducts included with the standard M Sport upgrades. An emotionally charged sport exhaust system has been fitted to perfectly capture the serious driving intentions of the 335is. Black kidney grilles, mirror caps, and Shadowline exterior trim lead the eyes to the rear where a rear diffuser with a body-color and black insert is located. Inside, the 335is Coupe receives a full M Sport enhancement with unique trim and badges. Those enthusiasts who prefer not to have it will appreciate the ability to delete the standard glass moonroof. For the first time on the 3 Series (excluding M3) the Double Clutch Transmission (DCT) will be available on the 335is as a $1,575 option.
The 328i Coupe and 335i Coupe start at $37,075 and $43,525, respectively, including $875 Destination & Handling. Under the skin, the 335i Convertible has been fitted with the new “N55” twin-scroll turbocharged inline-6 engine, and may be coupled to the standard 6-speed manual or optional 6-speed automatic transmission. In addition to the new Vermillion Red and Deep Sea Blue exterior colors, Mineral White Metallic exterior paint will be available on the Convertible starting in June. On all 3 Series models, the optional Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces BMW’s HiFi Professional System. Also, as part of the update, BMW has made new Bamboo Anthracite Wood trim available on the interior.

Convertible drivers with a love for dynamic performance will be excited to learn of the new BMW 335is Convertible. This high-performance model features BMW’s award-winning twin-turbocharged inline-6 (N54), with output of 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. A special overboost function permits a temporary torque increase to 370 lb-ft. Cooling the extra heat generated by the increased power is a standard oil cooler and an extra water cooler (radiator), as well as front air ducts included with the standard M Sport upgrades. Sport suspension and a sport exhaust system have been fitted to properly enhance the driving experience. Black kidney grilles, mirror caps, and Shadowline exterior trim lead the eyes to the rear where a rear diffuser with a body-color and black insert is located. Inside, the 335is Convertible receives a full M Sport enhancement with unique trim and badges. The stylish MY2011 BMW 5 Series combines athletic looks, superb driving dynamics, and innovative comfort and safety features into an executive express that promises to remain at the top of the segment.
With the longest wheelbase in the class, a long and sleek hood, short overhangs, and a coupe-like roofline, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan stands out clearly from the competition. Overall, the aesthetic looks of the car are achieved through balanced proportions. Design features emblematic of BMW are to be found at the front with its kidney grille inclined slightly forward, in the stylish and elegant side view of the car, and at the muscular rear end.

Within the interior, precise functionality and a fresh ambience come together in perfect harmony, unmistakable style, and clear orientation to the driver.

Highly advanced drivetrain and suspension technologies combine agile handling for the driver and a high standard of riding comfort for passengers. When equipped with the Sport Package, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan includes Adaptive Drive, which encompasses Driving Dynamics Control, Electronic Damper Control, and Active Roll Stabilization. Optional Integral Active Steering will virtually extend or shorten the vehicle’s wheelbase for improved stability at high speeds and enhanced agility at lower speeds.

At launch, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan will be available in the US with one V-8 and one inline-6 gasoline engine. The top-of-the-range BMW 550i arrives with BMW’s “reverse-flow” V-8 engine featuring twin turbochargers and High Precision direct injection for maximum output of 400 hp. The new inline-6 of the BMW 535i features a single twin-scroll turbocharger, High Precision direct injection, and, for the first time, VALVETRONIC throttle-less intake technology.
The new MY2011 BMW 5 Series will make its North American debut at the New York International Auto Show in late March 2010. Pricing and options will be released closer to market launch date.

5 Series Gran Turismo

The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo made its production debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show last fall and went on sale in December 2009 as a 2010 model. Therefore, it continues as a 2010 model this year, but there is still some news to report. In April 2010, the original BMW 550i Gran Turismo will be joined by the new 535i Gran Turismo, featuring BMW’s exciting new “N55” inline-6 engine. As the 550i Gran Turismo helped introduce the new 8-speed automatic transmission to the BMW line-make, the new 535i Gran Turismo will also feature the 8-speed automatic as standard. 0-60 mph acceleration will require only 6.2 seconds for the 535i Gran Turismo (5.4 seconds for 550i Gran Turismo). Compared to the 550i Gran Turismo, the 535i Gran Turismo features unique light-alloy wheel choices and forgoes some standard equipment, including auto-dimming mirrors, universal garage door opener, and Navigation system. Each 5 Series Gran Turismo model receives two new available exterior colors starting this spring, including Milano Beige and Damast Red. Both models will go on sale in the United States as 2011 models in spring 2010. The 740i models feature BMW’s internationally acclaimed twin-turbocharged inline-6 engine (N54) with an output of 315 horsepower. All-aluminum engine construction, High Precision direct fuel injection, VANOS variable camshaft technology, and Brake Energy Regeneration are a few of the technologies used under the BMW EfficientDynamics engineering philosophy to place the 740i and 740Li among the most powerful six-cylinder luxury sedans in the world. Delivering power to the rear wheels is BMW’s 6-speed automatic transmission, well-known for fast, smooth gearshifts and an ability to intelligently adapt to the driver.

Both models will be available with the full complement of well-known 7 Series options and packages, including the M Sport Package, Driver Assistance Package, Luxury Seating Packages, Rear Entertainment Package, and even the BMW Individual Composition Package.

BMW ALPINA B7

The 2011 BMW ALPINA B7 sedan will join BMW’s North American product range as the most dynamic 7 Series model. The BMW ALPINA B7 represents the second generation of ALPINA automobiles based on the BMW 7 Series to be offered in the US. The first BMW ALPINA B7 was offered as a limited edition for the 2007 and 2008 model years. Newly interpreted and based on the current BMW 7 Series platform, the B7 will again set the benchmark in terms of performance, refinement, technology, luxury and exclusivity.

Yielding exquisite levels of power and torque from the twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter V8, and in conjunction with the electronically-adjustable suspension with active roll stabilization, the new B7 promises to offer a spectrum of driving experiences so broad as to be unheard of in this class of automobiles. The evolution of the traditional 20-spoke 21″ ALPINA CLASSIC wheels underlines the fresh design language found throughout the B7 and imparts to it a distinctive appearance and powerful stance.

The B7 sedan is equipped with BMW’s twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter, all-aluminum, High Precision Direct Injection V-8 engine which has been enhanced by ALPINA and is capable of producing 500 (373kW) horsepower and 516 lb-ft (700Nm) of torque. This rear-wheel drive performance/luxury Sedan achieves 0-60 mph in 4.5 sec. With maximum torque available across an unusually broad engine range, from 3,000 to 4,750 rpm, the B7 accelerates effortlessly from virtually any speed.

The B7 sedan is finished with ALPINA aerodynamic developments, including front and rear spoilers which not only enhance the appearance but also improve stability and performance at high speeds. In true “form-follows-function” fashion, the ALPINA front integrates the fresh-air requirements of the transmission and engine oil coolers, which are separated out of the main cooler module for improved efficiency. The spoilers reduce lift at the front by 30% and rear by15%. The exhaust system’s two double tailpipes are seamlessly integrated into the rear bumper. The newest evolution of the traditional 20-spoke ALPINA CLASSIC wheels gives the B7 a distinctive appearance and powerful stance.

The interior of the B7 sedan features ALPINA blue illuminated door sill trims, the SWITCH-TRONIC steering wheel in hand-stitched LAVALINA leather, and the Black-Panel LCD screen instrument cluster branded with ALPINA.
The full complement of BMW 7 Series exterior colors remains available, in addition to the signature ALPINA Blue metallic paint. Both short- and long-wheelbase models will be offered. The BMW ALPINA B7 will go on sale at authorized BMW Centers in Spring of 2010. Pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

The Range topping Twin Turbo V12 powered 760Li

The all-new BMW 760Li Sedan went on sale in fall of 2009 featuring the latest iteration in BMW’s decades-long history of harmonious V12 engines. This newest BMW V12 produces 535 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque with help from twin turbochargers and High Precision Direct Injection. The outcome is a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds in a stylish, luxurious package. The long list of standard features and amenities ensures the comfort of each occupant.

While the 760Li will not change Model Years until September, the top-view function has been added as standard. The MY2010 760Li Sedan starts at $137,425 including $875 Destination & Handling.

ActiveHybrid 7

On the heels of the ActiveHybrid X6, BMW announced the production versions of the all-new BMW ActiveHybrid 7, which also made its US premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show in December 2009. The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 will reach American shores late in the second quarter of 2010 as a 2011 model. Based on the 5th-generation BMW 7 Series, this unique car sets new standards for performance and efficiency in the premium luxury class.

The symbiosis of a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine with a 3-phase synchronous electric motor gives the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 a combined output of 455 hp and maximum torque of 515 lb-ft from 2000 – 3000 rpm. Power is transmitted via an 8-speed automatic transmission with the electric motor positioned between the engine and the torque converter. The electric motor receives its supply of energy from a lithium-ion battery developed specifically for this automobile.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 accelerates to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, while delivering fuel economy approximately 15% better than the 750i and 750Li. Auto Start Stop maximizes efficiency by avoiding engine idling when stopped. The ActiveHybrid 7 is distinguished by aerodynamically-tuned ten-spoke 19-inch Aero wheels, and is available in Bluewater Metallic exterior paintwork. The BMW ActiveHybrid 7L has a wheelbase increased by 5.5″, all of which is devoted to the enhanced comfort of rear-seat passengers. Both models are available with a wide range of options from the portfolio of equipment offered on the BMW 7 Series.

The MY2011 ActiveHybrid 7 and ActiveHybrid 7L start at $103,175 and $107,075, respectively. All pricing includes $875 Destination & Handling.

Z4 Roadster

The all-new Z4 Roadster that was first introduced in the spring of 2009 will become a 2011 model this spring and offer the sport enthusiast with new several options.

First, a new M Sport Package is now available on the Z4 sDrive30i and the Z4 sDrive35i for $3,900 and $3,500 respectively. The M Sport Package includes the Adaptive

M Suspension, M Aerodynamic body package, 18” M light alloy wheels (with a 19” wheel option on the 35i), exclusive M exterior color Melbourne Red Metallic, M interior trim in Aluminum Carbon, sport seats, M door sills, footrest, gearshift lever, M steering wheel (with paddle shifters if equipped with Steptronic or DCT) and an Anthracite headliner. In addition, the M Sport Package can be combined with the Exclusive Ivory White Package (which adds Ivory White leather seats and trim on the dash and door panels) for a total of $5,350 on the Z4 sDrive30i and $5,050 on the Z4 sDrive35i.

Second, the new 2011 BMW Z4 sDrive35is model distills the BMW Z4 Roadster’s performance potential to produce one of BMW’s fastest and best-handling Roadsters ever. It arrives at authorized BMW Centers this Spring 2010.

This latest Z4 model is characterized by instantaneous response, a fantastic exhaust note, and a free-revving spirit. The engine features increased air intake flow and increased boost pressure to release more power. The turbocharger system developed for the engine of the new BMW Z4 sDrive35is maintains a high output throughout the entire engine speed range. Nominal peak torque is increased to 332 lb-ft available from 1,400 rpm to 4,500 rpm. Maximum output of 335 hp is delivered at 5,800 rpm. The BMW Z4 sDrive35is will complete the sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds (preliminary). Top speed of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is is limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph.

Acoustic tuning of the exhaust system of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is gives the car a very unique sound across the speed range. The sound is characterized by a deep rumble with a focus on the low frequency sound range.

Electric Power Steering (EPS) on the BMW Z4 sDrive35is features very sporty programming, focused to provide intense and clear steering feedback to the driver. This enables the driver to turn-in with remarkable precision and confidence at all vehicle speeds. The BMW Z4 sDrive35is includes new M Sport upgrades such as M Aerodynamics and adaptive M Suspension. The adaptive M Suspension combines a ride-height reduction of 10 millimeters (almost 0.4”) with electronically controlled shock absorbers to improve the vehicle’s agility without compromising ride comfort. The M Sport upgrades emphasize the Z4’s athletic character through aerodynamically optimized exterior features and customized interior components.

Special 18-inch light-alloy wheels in five-spoke design round off the sporty character of the Z4 sDrive35is. 19-inch light-alloy wheels are optional. In addition, the new model is further distinguished by a striking front bumper with a matte aluminum trim bar in each outer air intake, a rear bumper with accentuated surrounds on the tailpipes, and a rear diffuser finished at top in body color and black textured surface underneath. Inside, a full complement of M Sport details augments the new Aluminum Carbon interior trim and available new Kansas Walnut leather.

The MY2011 Z4 sDrive30i and Z4 sDrive35i start at $46,875 and $52,775 respectively, including $875 Destination & Handling. The MY2011 Z4 sDrive35is will retail for $61,925 including $875 Destination & Handling.

X3 Sports Activity Vehicle

The 2010 BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle continues unchanged through to the end of production later this year. The current X3 will be replaced with a new generation X3 produced in at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina assembly plant. The MY2010
X3 xDrive30i begins at $39,725, including $875 Destination & Handling.
X5 Sports Activity Vehicle

The Model Year 2011 X5 models will begin production in April 2010. Detailed information on the MY2011 X5 models will be released later.

X6 Sports Activity Coupe

The BMW X6 enters MY2011 with both increased efficiency and performance facilitated by the addition of an 8-speed automatic transmission and Brake Energy Regeneration. The result is that X6 xDrive35i accelerates from 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds (reduced by 0.2 seconds) while the X6 xDrive50i gets to 60mph in 5.2 seconds (reduced by 0.1 seconds).
Option changes include the addition of Lane Departure Warning and Active Cruise Control as stand-alone options for $950 and $2,400 respectively. Side View Cameras were added to Technology Package of the X6 xDrive35i making the new package price $2,500 and increasing functionality. The new Camera package for the X6 xDrive50i now offers both Side View and Top View for a retail price of $1,200. Finally, the Cold Weather Package is now $900 (reduced by $350) due to the deletion of the ski bag and heated rear seats.

The MY2011 X6 xDrive35i and X6 xDrive50i MSRP remain unchanged at $57,375 and $68,075, respectively, including $875 Destination & Handling.

M3

The M3 Coupe, Sedan, and Convertible models become 2011 models this spring . BMW ups the ante on the M3 Coupe and Sedan by offering a new “Competition Package” for MY2011. The package further enhances the highly responsive chassis by installing a 10mm lower suspension and 19” wheels with greater offset for a wider track. Combined with remapped Electronic Damping Control and Dynamic Stability Control systems, the M3 with Competition Package is the best handling production M car ever built.

The MSRP of MY2011 M3 Sedan, Coupe, and Convertible remain unchanged at $56,275, $59,275, and $67,925, respectively. All prices include $875 Destination & Handling. The Competition Package is available on the Coupe and Sedan models for $2,500.

M5 Sedan

The car that invented the category of ultra-high performance sport sedan back in 1985 takes a hiatus for MY2011. A new M5 Sedan based on the upcoming 6th generation
5 Series is planned but not ready to be unveiled yet.

M6 Coupe and Convertible

The BMW M6 Coupe and Convertible will continue as a 2010 models until the fall of 2010. The MY2010 M6 Coupe and Convertible start at $103,225 and $109,025, respectively, including $875 Destination & Handling.

X5 M and X6 M

The BMW X5 M and X6 M went on sale last fall as 2010 models in the United States. This spring they become 2011 models.

Featuring an all-new BMW M Power V-8 engine with 555 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque, the X5 M and X6 M are the first BMW M products with twin-turbochargers, High Precision Direct Injection, xDrive all-wheel drive, Dynamic Performance Control torque-vectoring final drive, run-flat tires, and FlexRay on-board networking. The patented Cylinder-bank Comprehensive exhaust Manifold (CCM) perfectly feeds the two twin-scroll turbochargers with exhaust gas for maximum linearity and response. The results of these new technological solutions are a Sports Activity Vehicle® and Sports Activity Coupe each capable of 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds and truly world-class roadholding abilities, without sacrifice in comfort or versatility.

Side-View Camera was added to the Driver Assistance Package. The Side view camera adds a significant addition to the outward visibility of the X5 M and X6 M, enhancing customer security in tight places. With this addition, the Driver Assistance Package retail price increases $400 from $1,800 to $2,200.

The MY2011 X5 M and X6 M start at $86,375 and $89,875, respectively, including $875 Destination & Handling.

With new models, new engines and new packages, the BMW line-up for MY2011 will be strongest ever. Most of the 2011 BMW models including the new 5 Series and the 335is will debut at the New York International Auto Show in late March. With the few exceptions noted, the 2011 BMWs will arrive in US showrooms this spring.

After our experience earlier this year in the X6 ///M we couldn’t wait to get some seat time in its sibling, the X5 ///M. The X5 is powered by the same 555 hp/500 lb-ft twin turbo V8 as the X6 version. An engine we have covered in great detail here at BimmerFile. The standard E70 platform has been stiffened and the suspension given the ///M treatment along with many other tweaks to improve performance and looks. The X5 pictured is Carbon Black, and looks fantastic in person as the color is a dark blue that grabs the light and refracts it beautifully. Monte Carlo Blue is another excellent color choice for this vehicle and was featured in the official release photos.

///Motor

The engine is a masterpiece. It quickly spools and never feels like it is out of breathe thanks to the patented manifold and use of twin scroll turbos. What continues to surprise us with this engine is how relatively efficient it is. “Relatively” was used because it is still no fuel miser, although who would expect something packing all that punch to sip the fuel anyways? What it will get you is about 21 mpg on the highway and mid teens in the city. Considering this monster weighs in at over 5,500 lbs. and is getting ///M3 mileage says a lot about where BMW is terms of efficiency all without sacrificing performance.

Driving Impressions

The low exhaust note and burble when you let off the gas appears a tad louder in the X5, a function of improved software from the pre-production X6 we drove or thanks to the rear cargo area on the X5. Whatever the cause, it is wonderful. Sure you lose the high rev in this turbo V8, but with the flat torque curve it is highly unnecessary and compliments the vehicle dynamics well. Most of our readers will complain at the lack of a manual transmission option (as we enthusiasts tend to be left pedal snobs) but the tweaks in the auto along with the paddles make it “acceptable” if not enjoyable. Yes, enjoyable- especially when you are sitting in bumper to bumper traffic in the Metro NYC area. If you put it in DS (Sport) and let the algorithms do their thing, it holds the gear and shifts just when a good driver would. Something most autos have issues with.

Handling is mind bending once you think about all that mass; Active Roll Stabilization, Dynamic Performance Control, Adjustable Dampers and a whole bunch of acronyms and technology help this vehicle drive better than many “sports cars” claim to. The same goes for braking. One would hope that vehicle that can accelerate so fast could stop as well; with the massive discs and calipers on this beast it stops just as well as it goes. So it is fast, nimble and can stop on a dime; it is not to be considered a weapon.

Is it Functional?

The X6 and X5 are near identical in the numbers, the feel and overall drive (Just as the ///M engineers promised us). Where the X5 shines is in in function. The X5 has more rear visibility out of the back, which is not all the necessary for backing up thanks to today’s rear cameras and park distance control but it is extremely necessary when you are rocketing in the night and trying to keep an eye out for those infamous Crown Vic’ headlights pacing you from behind. The X5 also has an enormous panoramic moon roof which when opened with all the windows down gives you a nice sound track and tons of wind in your hair.

The X5 seats 5 and has room to fit luggage or whatever in the back. It loses none of its day to day functionality outside of some ground clearance in ///M form. BMW even kept the roof rack on, for a cargo carrier or those Home Depot runs. In this vehicle you could race (literally) your way to the kid’s Little League practice then head over to the ‘Depot and pick up some lumber for the that clubhouse you are supposed to build all in a vehicle with a sub 4.5 second 0-60 time. That isn’t half bad!

Interior

The interior will feature some ///M exclusives such as the trim, colors, steering wheel and HUD. The new iDrive will be ushered into the X5 with this model as well. The overall interior is what you have come to expect from a modern BMW in terms of fit and finish, classy and well done. The Carbon Leather trim looks great with the contrasting Silverstone Merino Leather, adding a two-toned feel to the interior thanks to the anthracite headliner. BMW and ///M have stepped the luxury up a notch here, you can go as far as choosing the optional leather trimmed dash with this vehicle.

Once again though, like the X6 ///M, the base seats are disappointing for an ///M offering. They lack adjustable side bolsters so the optional Comfort Seats are an absolute must for any enthusiast requiring adequate lateral support. Considering the fabulous seats the base ///M3 comes with one would expect this vehicle to have something along the same lines. Are we missing something here, or is because this will be more for shuttling kids to and fro rather than track days?

Conclusions

Aside from the seats, the worst part of this X5 is the situation you will find yourself in on Saturday mornings when you pull up to the track. Your Spec E30 racer in tow (because last time your drove it on the street you caught a stone in the windshield) and decide that you don’t feel like taking the car off the trailer since it is a pain to remove all those tie downs just to put them back on later; you opt to take some hot laps in your SAV instead. All kidding aside, while the execution and performance of this SAV is off the charts, how many people will be tracking it? We doubt there will be many but it is a definite option.

The more we experience the torque vectoring of the Dynamic Performance Control the more we marvel at it. The things it allows you to do with a vehicle so heavy just should not be possible. It is as if DPC defies the laws of physics, thus allowing you to push the vehicle on the street and the track.

Many of us enthusiasts scoffed at the idea of ///M SAVs and it still has not been accepted by some, but the X5 like the X6 is no slouch and deserves the ///M badge it proudly wears. There is no comparison between the top of the line with ZSP X6 or X5 and these vehicles. If anyone says any different they have never pushed the vehicles- the difference is quite apparent and overwhelming in every aspect.

While the X5 ///M will not be for everyone (the $90,000 price helps that) it really does blur the lines of an SAV and a sports car quite well and will not disappoint in terms of performance and execution.

Yes, this is a bit confusing and makes little initial sense. <del datetime="2009-05-04T14:49:09+00:00">This is the first time a non-EU produced model is being offered for pickup in Europe by those of us in the states.</del> If there is a choice, it is my opinion to ALWAYS take delivery at the BMW Welt as there is nothing better than driving your car on the roads it was designed for. Our original understanding was that X5 and X6 ///M models would have limited availability for delivery at BMW Welt but it has been brought to our attention that the wording really means that you take delivery of a car normally available for European Delivery and get to “experience” the ///M SAVs.

This limited driving event starts with picking up your new BMW (not an ///M SAV) in Munich and ends with an ///M Power Driving Experience in Salzburg, Austria.

The experience includes a two-day driving event at the Salzburgring which also features a behind the scenes for the product development of these models and of course some well deserved track time with BMW ///M stock vehicles. There are some other small perks as well and of course you can stay in Europe for longer than the 2 days!

The cost of the program is $2000 per person. Seems a bit stiff for a 2 day experience but if you look at the cost of a 2-day ///M school this is actually cheap.

With the number of deliveries at BMW Welt by US buyers decreasing exponentially in recent months (along with overall car sales in general) this may be the first of many such experiences to help drive up the number of deliveries.

While most enthusiasts have cried out in anger with the recent news that the ///M division has gone the forced induction road; the news may not be all that bad. The BMW ///M motors of the past have always been fairly low in displacement, peaky in horsepower and torque, but loving to rev to sky high red lines. The newest rendition from the ///M camp is a bit different from those engines; it was intentionally designed to be different and change the playing field. It is capable of producing more torque and more horsepower with less displacement and greater efficiency than the motors of the past.

The recently announced X5 & X6 ///M models have been chosen to usher in this new era of high performance BMW engines. With virtually the same block as the revolutionary N63 4.4l reverse flow V8 as in the 750i and X6 xDrive50i, this ///M motor features significant revisions in nearly every other aspect. The internal components have been upgraded along with the newly engineered cylinder heads (diesel standards for strength) to deal with the high compression ratio and increased forced induction. The dual twin scroll turbos put out an astonishing 21 lbs of max boost. Two high-capacity water-to-air intercoolers help cool the incoming combustion air before it is shot with precise amounts of fuel by another ///M first: Direct Injection. BMW has not offered Direct Injection on any naturally aspirated (non-turbo) motor in the US due to the sulfur content of US fuel and they do not plan on offering it on them in the future (as we have been told). So all of you on the fence about buying an ///M3 and fearing direct injection will be offered, can rest a little easier.

Turbo charging has come a long way in the past few years as many a BMW 335 (N54 I6 twin turbo) owner will tell you, but another significant improvement will debut on this motor. The Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM) is a BMW patented exhaust manifold that separates this motor (and future variants) from the competition. The CCM solves the problem of an irregular schedule of exhaust gas pulses on the turbines. An irregular schedule of pulses causes lag and back pressure in typical turbo charging applications.

The CCM creates an exhaust gas pulse at every 90 degrees of crank rotation on one of the turbo scrolls, keeping the supply of exhaust gas regular and consistent. How this achieved is visible in our exclusive diagrams of the inner working of the CCM and twin scroll turbos from BMW ///M.

Complimentary cylinders are paired through the manifold’s pipes, which have been tuned for diameter and length, 1 + 6, 2 + 8, 3 + 5, and 4 + 7.

These pipes (each highlighted by a certain color in the diagrams) combine to feed one of 4 exhaust gas intakes on the 2 twin scroll turbos.

With the twin scroll setup there are two separate paths to each turbo, with each targeting its own set of vanes. The use of twin scroll chargers allows for the maximum capture of exhaust gas flow currently possible, thus increasing the turbos overall efficiency while keeping it spooled up. The concept of the CCM would be extremely cumbersome and inefficient without the development of the reverse flow V8, the development of one allowed for the other.

This complex network of pipes and turbos is entirely contained within the “V” of the engine, allowing for an engine with relatively small dimensions. Some of you are probably thinking that all of that exhaust piping and turbos within such a close proximity to engine block can not be good on a thermal level; BMW has designed the engine with that in mind and there are auxiliary cooling systems in place if the need should arise for them. It is not a general concern.

What all of this plumbing and forced induction produces is 555 hp at 6,000 rpm and 500 lb-ft of torque from 1500 to 5,650 rpm with reportedly no perceivable lag. The onboard engine control unit software has been programmed/tuned for this application in the SAVs and the specific driving needs of them, as is evidenced by the huge flat spot in the torque curve. It can be adjusted/tuned as is necessary in future applications and variations. What that means to us enthusiasts is that this engine is highly flexible and we may not yet be seeing its true capabilities. The true redline (not software induced) of this motor setup has yet to be disclosed by ///M at this time. With this motor as the basis of other future high performance ///M offerings we are fairly sure that there is some excess capacity to increase the performance on other models…

We have been told that many of the features of this motor will trickle down across the model line. We can expect to see the use of twin scroll turbos and future applications of a form of CCM in other models sooner than one would think. The current 1.6l John Cooper Works MINI (and MCS) engine is the only other BMW Group gasoline product currently using twin scroll turbos; a shift from variable vane is coming. With all of this turbo jargon we will be creating a guide to the terms and compare and contrast them as soon as we can!

While this engine is not a typical high-rev ///M offering, the shift to turbo charging was needed to increase efficiency and performance. On paper, it looks like a success and we will give you our final verdict once we can log some miles with it!

As always we would love to hear your opinion; feel free to comment on this motor and BMW heading down the road of high performance forced induction as a whole!

Official release: The modern, sustainable legacy of BMW M GmbH began in 1985 when engineers placed the snarling, race-bred inline-6 engine from the M1 supercar into the production BMW 5 Series sedan, reworked the suspension and brakes, and created the first M5. Through this industry-first combination of attributes, the M5 redefined the capabilities of a sedan with levels of power, precision, balance, and linear control never before imaginable. Since
then, finding new ways to expand the boundaries of what is possible with existing
BMW models has been the singular purpose of the craftsmen at BMW M. Now the
BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are the first all-wheel-drive models to offer the
remarkable performance, dynamic driving experience, athletic design, and
premium quality of a BMW M product.

Both models are powered by a newly-developed 4.4-liter V8 M engine delivering
555 hp at 6,000 rpm and 500 lb-ft of torque from 1500 to 5,650 rpm. This new
M engine is the world’s first with a pulse-tuned exhaust manifold encompassing
both rows of cylinders combined with high-performance twin-scroll twin turbo
technology.

For the X5 M and X6 M, engineers at BMW M pushed the capabilities of BMW’s
intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system and the Dynamic Performance Control
system to manage the power and performance potential of these two new
vehicles. The special M suspension includes Adaptive Drive and newly-developed
Servotronic power steering. These features combine to push the limits of what
was previously possible with a sports-oriented vehicle, and guarantee driving
behavior characteristic of a BMW M product: incredible stability and precisely controlled steering qualities abound throughout the performance envelope.

The BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M set new standards of acceleration, lateral grip,
steering response, balance, and stopping power among high-performance activity
vehicles. Both models accelerate to 60 mph from a standstill in 4.5 seconds and
feature impressive delivery of power from the V8 twin-turbo engine which
provides maximum torque of 500 lb-ft from 1,500 and 5,650 rpm. From a
handling standpoint, both vehicles are notable for superb balance through careful
tuning of xDrive, Dynamic Performance Control, and Dynamic Stability Control
with M Dynamic Mode for linear buildup of cornering forces. These capabilities
place the performance of the X5 M and X6 M on par with the performance of
other recent BMW M vehicles.

The athletic character and amazing performance abilities of the BMW X5 M and X6
M result from levels of development never before applied to this type of vehicle.
As it did when creating the original M5, BMW M has once again shown that
applying new technologies and innovations to a solid BMW production vehicle type
will produce startling performance and an exhilarating drive. Both of these new
models offer capabilities and dynamic driving experiences which are quite unique,
and promise to provide thrills from everyday traffic to the race track.

Exterior Design: BMW M heritage reflecting function, purpose, and
style.

The outstanding potential of both models is communicated clearly in their looks
and design, their performance-bred heritage presented convincingly by the
common design of the front end with its large air intakes.

The hood, front air dam, and headlights are virtually identical on the BMW X5 M
and X6 M. Both models feature special gills in the front fenders, as well as model-
specific 20-inch light-alloy wheels. The signs of distinction of BMW M are presented in individual style at the rear, confirming the athletic character of each
model. The rear diffuser on each model communicates a particularly powerful
presence, and the quad tailpipes of the exhaust system are again a signature of
BMW M’s masterful work.

Compared with the standard BMW X5 and BMW X6, the body-color surface area
on the side skirts are designed to place greater emphasis on their road-going
orientations. On both models the body designs fulfill major functions in terms of
aerodynamics and the carefully controlled flow of cooling air.

The first modern turbocharged M engine: twin scroll twin turbo
technology with a patented exhaust manifold.

Using BMW’s innovative, 4.4L reverse-flow V8 engine with High Precision Direct
Injection and twin turbochargers as a basis, the new M engine introduces twin-
scroll twin turbochargers and patented exhaust manifold technologies to achieve
outstanding thrust and pulling force, while preserving the most compact
dimensions possible. Two low-mass twin-scroll turbochargers are positioned
together with the catalytic converters in the “V” section between the two banks
of cylinders. By reversing the flow of gases through the engine from traditional
arrangements, the intake and exhaust ducts are shortened and widened. The
result is that pressure losses on the exhaust side are minimized.

The goals: virtually eliminate turbocharger lag while maximizing combustion
efficiency and power output. Tremendous power and performance are delivered
by the engine in the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M through a new design and
construction principle. The new M V8 engine with twin-scroll twin turbo
technology uses a single exhaust manifold with tuned-length runners,
incorporating both cylinder banks and connecting cylinders in carefully-selected
pairs. This configuration, patented by BMW M and known as Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM), offers lightning-quick response, a linear build-up
of engine power, and a broad, consistent torque curve by feeding each of the
twin turbochargers with a “charge pulse” at approximately every 90 degrees of
crankshaft rotation, rather than the more traditional “irregular schedule” of
charging.

The managed flow of exhaust gas provided by the CCM ensures high-velocity flow
of combustion gases. The appropriate separation of exhaust gas flow from
different cylinders is maintained until the gas reaches the turbine wheel, spooling
the two twin-scroll turbochargers without back-pressure. With maximum boost
pressure of 1.5 bar (21 psi), the use of twin-scroll twin turbo technology and the
CCM exhaust manifold allows complete exploitation of the benefits of
turbocharging.

Immediate response and remarkable thrust characterize the new V8 twin-
turbocharged engine from BMW M GmbH. The impressive onset of power is
accompanied by unique, engaging engine sounds that accentuate the quick-
revving characteristics with the dynamic acoustic effect typical of a BMW M
product. The sounds are always civilized, but transform from relatively calm to
extraordinarily intense as the boost and revs build from idle. Reflecting the
tremendous power of the engine, the turbocharged M V8 is equipped with an
advanced cooling system developed specifically for the two new models. One
notable feature in this context is the presence of two high-capacity water-to-air
intercoolers which consistently optimize performance under the most demanding
driving conditions. An aluminum oil sump exclusive to BMW M with a special finned
surface guarantees optimum cooling at all times even under an extremely
demanding style of driving.

The turbocharged M V8 engine develops its outstanding power with remarkable
efficiency. In addition to BMW’s High Precision Direct Injection, both the BMW X5
M and the BMW X6 M are equipped with a range of technologies from BMW’s
EfficientDynamics engineering strategy. These include on-demand control of the
electric fuel pump, an on-demand compressor for the air conditioner, and a flow-
controlled supply of hydraulic fluid to the Active Roll Stabilization system. By
operating these features specifically on demand, energy waste is minimized. The
engine fulfills the requirements of the US LEV II standard as well as the EU5
requirements in Europe.

M Sports Automatic and M shift paddles on the steering wheel

Featured for the first time on a BMW M model, the 6-speed M Sports Automatic
transmission enhances the high-performance character of the BMW X5 M and the
BMW X6 M through its instantaneous response, direct connection to the engine,
and a high degree of shifting comfort. The new M Sports Automatic is
commanded by an electronic selector on the center console and offers the driver
not only the Drive mode, but also Sport and M Manual modes for absolute control
of gear selection.

Aluminum pull-style paddles on the steering wheel exclusive to BMW M allow
manual shifting (Right for upshifts, Left for downshifts). Upshifts occur
significantly quicker than in the past thanks to new technology that reduces
torque in the transmission through momentary deactivation of individual cylinders.
This significantly enhances the athletic character of the vehicle. In the M Manual
mode, each chosen gear is held up to redline in order to give the driver perfect
throttle-steering control of the vehicle under the most demanding driving
conditions. The transmission does not upshift or downshift automatically in this
mode. A further option in the M Manual mode is to activate the Launch Control
feature, which enables the driver to accelerate from a standstill with maximum
performance. To activate Launch Control, the driver stops the vehicle, moves the gear selector into the M/S position and activates the Sports Power mode, as well
as the M Dynamic mode, or respectively, the DSC-Off mode. Then, with the
transmission in stage M1, the driver presses down the brake pedal and moves the
accelerator to at least 60% throttle, setting Launch Control to standby. Standby
status is confirmed by “starter’s flag” symbol in the instrument cluster. As soon
as the driver releases the brake pedal, the vehicle will accelerate with full power in
“genuine racing style.” In the process, the M Sports Automatic transmission
automatically upshifts at the ideal points, with the fastest possible shifts and
optimum wheelspin control. The driver may terminate the Launch Control process
at any time by reducing the throttle position.

BMW xDrive and Dynamic Performance Control with a special M setup
for optimum dynamics.

The outstanding success of BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology is
based on quick, electronically-controlled power distribution to the front and rear
axles. When combined with the superb, near 50-50 static weight distribution of
any BMW, xDrive can prevent the tendency for the vehicle to oversteer and
understeer as long as possible, reducing the need for Dynamic Stability Control
(DSC) to provide electronic assistance.

BMW’s Dynamic Performance Control was presented for the first time in the BMW
X6 and is now featured in the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M. Put succinctly,
Dynamic Performance Control enhances driving stability in demanding situations
and is thus perfectly suited to a powerful M vehicle. Vectoring of torque between
the right and left rear wheels (both on throttle and off) significantly improves
steering precision and tracking stability at all speeds, with DSC being required to
stabilize the vehicle only under extreme lateral acceleration. Ultimately this offers
the driver an unparalleled standard of performance, agility, balance, and traction,
and re-establishes the benchmarks in drivetrain and suspension technology for all types of performance-oriented vehicles.

In the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M the potentials of both xDrive and Dynamic
Performance Control are maximized by BMW M, with the driver able to activate
the M Dynamic Mode (MDM) with the DSC button on the center console or the
steering wheel-mounted M Button. This mode raises DSC thresholds of
intervention and ensures throttle-steering behavior typical of BMW M by shifting
the xDrive bias more to the rear and involving the Dynamic Performance Control in
the process. A pictogram in the Control Display in the instrument cluster allows
the driver to monitor the activity of Dynamic Performance Control and xDrive
through a clear visual depiction, which shows the driver how much power is being
distributed to each wheel.

As a result, M Dynamic Mode allows maximum speeds in bends and on winding
roads with the DSC system intervening only when the vehicle reaches the
absolute physical limits of grip. Even under maximum load in the apex of a bend,
the vehicle follows steering inputs with tremendous precision, giving the driver
very high speeds when exiting a turn in the interest of optimum performance.
Last but not least, DSC may be completely deactivated by experienced drivers at
the touch of a button.

Beyond the stabilizing effects of Dynamic Stability Control provided by individual
brake activation and engine power reduction under extreme conditions, DSC in the
BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M includes a wide range of additional features tuned to
BMW M standards to promote safe and exciting driving. These include ABS anti-
lock brakes, Trailer Stability Control, Hill Descent Control, Dynamic Brake Control
which maximizes brake force when required, Cornering Brake Control for advanced
trail-braking, Brake Fade Compensation for extreme driving conditions, automatic
Brake Drying when the windshield wipers are activated, Start-Off Assistant for driving on steep hills, and a braking function for use by the standard cruise
control.

Both vehicles come with an electrohydraulic parking brake which features the
Autohold (Auto H) function. Auto H is a convenience feature that holds the
vehicle in position as soon as it comes to a stop at an intersection or in stop-and-
go traffic, without requiring the driver to hold constant pressure on the brake
pedal. As soon as the driver touches the accelerator again, the brake is instantly
released.

M Suspension with standard Adaptive Drive.

The suspension developed specifically for the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M with its
double-wishbone front control arms and integral four-link rear axle offers M-
specific geometry and damping. This is accomplished through optimized control
arm and A-arm bushings at the front, as well as stiffer axle support mounts at the
rear.

As part of the advanced Integrated Chassis Management system which networks
all drivetrain and suspension components, both models feature standard self-
leveling rear air suspension and Adaptive Drive with Electronic Damping Control
(EDC) and Active Roll Stabilization (ARS). The special version of Adaptive Drive
tailored to the requirements of BMW M lowers the entire vehicle by 10 millimeters
or 0.4″ versus the standard BMW X5 and BMW X6.

To quickly and reliably process data, Adaptive Drive uses the high-speed FlexRay
data transmission protocol. FlexRay enables Adaptive Drive to transfer data
through the vehicle’s on-board network at an extremely fast rate. This enables
lightning-quick changes to settings for individual shock absorbers, swaybars, and
other components as conditions and driving demands warrant. For example, if the
front wheel encounters a bump, the system responds quickly enough before the rear wheel reaches the same bump. On the X5, X6, and 7 Series, BMW is the first
carmaker in the world to use FlexRay as a regular technology.

The special Servotronic steering developed for the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M
provides variable steering assistance geared to the road speed of the vehicle. This
allows the driver to negotiate parking maneuvers with lower effort while
preserving exact feedback and the highest standard of steering precision at
higher speeds.

The degree of power steering assistance is defined by two control maps. Apart
from the standard configuration, the driver is able, through the Adaptive Drive
button or the M Drive button on the steering wheel, to call up the Sport Mode.
This activates a sports driving control map with higher control forces for
particularly dynamic driving conditions.

When changing from Normal to Sport Mode, the system alters not only the
Servotronic steering control map, but also the damper setting, with the shock
absorbers of the vehicle being significantly stiffened in Sport Mode. In conjunction
with Active Roll Stabilization, this allows an exceptionally high standard of linear
lateral forces in dynamic bends and on fast, winding roads, and keeps body roll to
a minimum.

M Brakes and tires to match the M Power.

Outstanding stopping power with fade reduced to a minimum is guaranteed by
the high-performance M brake system, which combines giant four-piston fixed
calipers at the front with floating calipers at the rear, combined in each case with
large, internally-vented lightweight brake discs. The brake rotors themselves
measure 15.6” in diameter at front and 15.2” at rear. They feature a riveted
connection to join the aluminum rotor hats with the cast-iron rotor discs. The BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are the only vehicles of their type equipped
with staggered-size tires front and rear, running on 20-inch light-alloy wheels. The
choice of runflat tires in sizes 275/40 R 20 at the front and 315/35 R 20 at the
rear is a result of the special setup of both models, with the emphasis on rear-
wheel power and dynamic handling balance. This promotes exceptionally good
transmission of power to the rear axle and precise, razor-sharp steering behavior
of both models. Transitional stability is also world-class.

Maximum performance at the touch of a button: M Drive button on
the steering wheel.

In addition to the DSC mode (On, MDM, or Off) and the specific setup of the
shock absorbers and Servotronic steering, the driver may also configure the setup
of the drivetrain on the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M. Activating the Power
mode influences both engine and transmission behavior, and the driver can
choose from the Sport and Efficiency driving programs. The Sport program allows
precise control of engine power under the most dynamic driving conditions, and
ensures a linear build-up of the power delivery. The Efficiency program, in turn,
upshifts at earlier points not only to significantly reduce fuel consumption under
normal driving conditions, but also to allow a relaxed style of driving by taking
advantage of the new M engine’s prodigious torque and power available from low
engine speeds. The result, therefore, is an ideal combination of flexibility for daily
use and all-out performance when desired.

When customizing the response of the steering wheel-mounted M Drive button,
the driver uses the M Drive menu to preselect the desired Power Mode and the
setup of DSC and EDC, making a personalized combination of settings that can be
activated on-demand. The driver’s favorite setup settings are saved and
subsequently activated at any time simply by pressing the M Drive button on the steering wheel. Pressing the M Drive button again returns the vehicle to its
previous configuration.

M-specific cockpit and sophisticated driver assistance systems for even greater ability at the wheel.

The BMW M philosophy naturally continues into the design and configuration of
the driver’s “office.” Both of these all-wheel-drive high-performance sports
vehicles come with a special M cockpit with the instrument cluster featuring a
variable redline, specific vehicle function displays, and white display backlighting.
Both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M feature power, heated front M sport
seats, an M sport leather steering wheel, M door sills, and driver’s footrest.

Infotainment functions, standard on-board Navigation with Real-Time Traffic data
and communication functions are all controlled by BMW’s 4th-generation iDrive.
The standard HiFi audio system features 12 loudspeakers and a 230 watt
amplifier. In addition, both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M may be equipped
with a Head-Up Display programmed specifically by BMW M. This option enables
the driver to customize the type and scope of data projected onto the windshield
through settings available in the M Drive menu.

Innovative driver assistance systems are fitted as well, with both models featuring
standard Dynamic Cruise Control, Rain Sensor, Auto-Dimming Mirrors, Park
Distance Control, and BMW’s Xenon Adaptive Headlights. The list of optional
features includes a Driver Assistance Package which includes High-Beam
Assistant, Head-Up Display, and Rear View Camera with the spectacular new Top
View feature. Top View provides the driver with an “birds-eye view” of the vehicle
on the iDrive control screen, using input from a camera on each side of the
vehicle and the traditional rear-view camera. Top View provides the driver with
additional confidence for tight parking scenarios.

Stable bodyshell and advanced safety equipment.

The BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M come with extremely stiff bodyshells. To ensure
maximum solidity, BMW’s body engineers focused on the use of intelligent
lightweight materials technology. Both the choice of materials and the
arrangement and geometry of the support bars, braces, and mounts on both
models are based on an overall concept that combines maximum crash safety
with supreme agility – which helps avoid crashes in the first place. At BMW, the
ability to avoid a crash is the best safety feature of all.

Forces acting on the unibody in the event of a crash are diverted through the
engine carriers and the chassis along several load paths in order to avoid extreme
loads acting on individual structures and help keep impact energy away from the
stable passenger cell.

Both the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M come with frontal and hip/thorax airbags, as
well as curtain head airbags to protect the occupants both front and rear from
injury. Three-point inertia-reel seatbelts are at all seating positions with force
limiters and, on the front seats, an additional seatbelt pretensioning function. To
help protect occupants from cervical spine injury in the event of a rear impact,
the front seats feature crash-activated active head restraints. ISOFIX child seat
anchors are standard on the rear seats.

All restraint systems are controlled by the vehicles’ central safety electronics,
which take the type and severity of a collision into account so that the most
effective safety elements are activated in any given crash. The frontal airbags
feature two-stage activation, to allow deployment in varying intensity as a
function of crash severity. Networked with Dynamic Stability Control, the
standard rollover sensors activate both the curtain airbags and the seatbelt
pretensioners, to ensure occupants are best positioned for and protected from
the unlikely event of a vehicle rollover.

Let the forced-induction era at the M Division begin. BMW has launched a micro-site for the X5 M and X6 M with a countdown to their launch of the NYC Auto Show this April. Within the tag cloud on the site BMW mentions a few attributes of the new cars including 550bhp. While this figure it nothing new (it has been rumored as a target for years) it’s nice to see some verification in an information official way.
