50/50 weight distribution and a limited slip differential. These are the not-so-secret ingredients for perfect and effortless drifting. But along with that there ‘s one that we often forget to talk about – a lack of adhesion. In the video above the lack of adhesion is naturally supplied by snow. In vintage BMWs (below) it was supplied by skinny tires with less aggressive rubber. It was one of the reasons you didn ‘t need more than 200 hp in a E30 M3 to get your tail-out at a moments notice. And despite tire manufacturers race to create stickier rubber and ever wider tires, it ‘s the reason we long for the days of skinny 205/55VR15s gently giving it up in the corners.

Enough talk. Cue the tail-out vintage rally footage.
