Not the best news on the surface but certainly interesting. According to Reuters BMW is finding that cutting carbon fiber products costs is perhaps harder than originally anticipated. Therefore the company’s strategy will be to limit carbon fiber’s usage to mostly higher profit cars. This is why we don’t see any carbon fiber in the new 5 Series and likely won’t see it in the upcoming all new 3 Series. Instead BMW is experimenting with an carbon and aluminum weave that dramatically cuts the costs while maintaining some of the benefits associated with the lightweight material.
