BMW’s 4 series Gran Coupe has been a massive success for the brand combining 3 series versatility with coupe like styling. Today the BMW is taking the wraps off of the 4 Series Gran Coupe life cycle refresh with new tech, more powerful engines and new, crisp styling.
Exterior Updates with New Colors and Light Features
The refreshed look of these BMW models is underscored by new paint finishes and alloy wheels. Fresh designs for the headlights and rear lights add a striking visual element, with laser-lit accents providing a touch of futuristic flair. The BMW i4 and 4 Series Gran Coupe feature slim headlights and a bold, vertically oriented kidney grille, setting a distinct profile on the road. The kidney grille’s surround is now finished in matte chrome, adding to the updated appearance. For the i4, the grille is partially closed due to the lower cooling needs of the electric drive system, while the combustion-engine variants of the 4 Series Gran Coupe have air intakes with a mesh structure.
Interior Redesign with Cutting-Edge Technology
Inside, the BMW Curved Display takes center stage, offering the latest evolution of BMW iDrive with QuickSelect, based on BMW Operating System 8.5. This display system can include an Augmented View for the BMW Maps navigation system, providing an innovative way to interact with vehicle functions. New steering wheel designs, interior trim elements, and updated upholsteries enhance the premium feel within the cabin.
The standard sport seats in perforated Sensatec, along with Vernasca leather trim in various colors, contribute to a sophisticated yet sporty interior ambiance. The revamped dashboard and interior details, like the smoother Sensatec upholstery and new trim elements, add to the sense of luxury.
Engine Updates with 48V Mild Hybrid Technology
The new B58B30M2 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine in the 2025 M440i Gran Coupe models now features 48V mild hybrid technology for enhanced power and efficiency. This system can add 11 hp to the 375 hp engine, bringing the total output to 386 hp. Meanwhile, the B48B20O2 2-liter inline 4-cylinder engine in the 430i Gran Coupe models also benefits from 48V technology, incorporating the Miller cycle combustion process for increased efficiency. These engines are paired with an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, offering smooth shifts and impressive acceleration.
The BMW i4’s engine or battery technology hasn’t been updated within the scope of this refresh.
Enhanced Lighting Technology and Design Features
Adaptive Full LED Headlights are now standard on the sportier models like the i4 M50 xDrive and M440i, and optional on others. These advanced headlights generate a unique Welcome Light animation when the driver approaches the vehicle. Additionally, the Laserlight taillights, previously seen on the high-performance BMW M4 CSL, bring a unique light graphic to the rear end, using laser diodes and fiber optics for a distinctive effect.
Alloy Wheels and Aerodynamics
New exterior paint finishes include Cape York Green metallic and Vegas Red metallic, adding to the vibrant color palette. The range of optional alloy wheels has also expanded, with 19-inch M Aero bi-color wheels and 20-inch BMW Individual Aero bi-color wheels in a double-spoke design, depending on the model and package selected.
Interior Improvements and User Experience
Inside the cockpit, BMW’s focus on digitalization continues with QuickSelect, designed to reduce physical buttons and controls while offering intuitive touch and voice command functionalities. The climate control system and seat/steering wheel heating are operated via the BMW Curved Display or through voice interaction with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Additionally, the new air vent controls allow for precise adjustment of airflow direction.
The 2025 models come standard with a two-spoke steering wheel, with the M Sport Package introducing a three-spoke M leather steering wheel featuring a flat-bottomed rim and distinctive stitching for added flair.
Customization and Personalization with BMW ID and My BMW App
BMW’s push for personalization continues with the BMW ID and My BMW App, allowing drivers to sync settings and personalize their driving experience with ease. The app provides remote access to the vehicle’s status, unlocking, and even a 3D view of the car’s surroundings. Additionally, the new BMW iDrive system, now equipped with QuickSelect, offers a simplified menu structure, making it easier to control vehicle functions and navigate digital services.
Enhanced Connectivity and Charging Capabilities
The BMW i4 and 4 Series Gran Coupe come with Personal eSIM and 5G capabilities, providing robust connectivity even without a smartphone on hand. The Plug & Charge Multi Contract feature allows for seamless charging at public stations without the need for separate authentication, streamlining the process for electric vehicle users.
These updates reflect BMW’s commitment to innovation, user experience, and sustainability, ensuring that the new BMW i4 and 4 Series Gran Coupe remain at the forefront of the premium midsize segment.

BMW’s Munich plant, exclusively focused on all-electric models, is where these cars will be built, with significant investments fueling the transformation. The new BMW i4 and 4 Series Gran Coupe models are set to launch globally in July 2024 with US availability in early September.
