The BMW Group's press conference today in Frankfurt was all about ushering in a new age of mobility, being Born Electric BMWi is the future, now. The new 4 Series and X5 were also debuted to the press.
All BMWs now come with a rocker that allows drivers to switch from through various drive settings ranging typically from ECO Pro to comfort to sport. On the i3 that "sport" setting is notably absent. When I saw that Monday I was taken aback. The idea of "sport" is such an essential part of BMW's DNA it seemed at odds with any product that wore the roundel. But after learning more about the program and talking with a few BMW representatives, the idea of a sporty i3 seems less of an "if" than a "when".
BMW has launched the i3 with a full court press of marketing, and we can't blame them as they usher in a new era of urban mobility. The videos cover everything from design to support services such as access to an X5 when needed for longer journeys.
First off, the BMW i3 takes some getting used to. It's a new shape, new controls and new touch-points. Yet the first impression (especially once you step inside) is one of progress.
