BMW and ZF Extend 8HP Transmission Partnership Through the 2030s

In a decisive move that blends legacy engineering with forward-thinking strategy, BMW Group and ZF Friedrichshafen AG have signed a new multi-billion euro agreement to continue developing the renowned 8-speed automatic transmission (8HP) well into the 2030s. The deal secures the future of a drivetrain staple at a time when the industry faces rapid electrification, and it highlights BMW’s ongoing commitment to internal combustion engines and hybrid drivetrains where demand remains strong.
First launched in 2008 on the BMW 7 Series (F01) 760Li, the ZF 8HP transmission redefined what an automatic could be. It offered a wider gear spread, improved efficiency, lightning-fast shifts, and exceptional smoothness. BMW was the launch customer, and its early adoption helped propel the 8HP into the limelight.
Over the years, the 8HP has been used in millions of vehicles across the automotive spectrum. From Rolls-Royce to Dodge Hellcats, it has become the gold standard of automatic transmissions. Its ability to balance high torque capability with refinement and efficiency has made it a go-to solution not only for performance cars but also for luxury sedans and SUVs.

BMW was not just an early adopter but a true development partner for ZF. The two companies collaborated closely to integrate the 8HP into nearly every longitudinal BMW platform. From the 3 Series to the X7, BMW engineers tuned shift logic, torque converter calibration, and integration with xDrive and hybrid systems to deliver hallmark BMW dynamics and drivability.
This partnership helped ZF refine the 8HP into a modular, scalable transmission that supports mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid configurations, proving it is anything but obsolete.
This new agreement extends into the late 2030s and ensures long-term supply and development of the 8HP, which will continue to be produced in Germany and the United States. It speaks volumes about BMW’s belief in a multi-path drivetrain future, where internal combustion engines, hybrids, and electric vehicles coexist.
Rather than letting the 8HP fade quietly into history as the EV era accelerates, BMW and ZF are investing in its evolution. This long-term commitment ensures it will remain a cornerstone of BMW’s powertrain lineup for years to come.
For driving enthusiasts and customers in markets where EV adoption is slower, that is very good news. Now let’s hope we hear something similar from Getrag about the 6 speed manual.
