BMW’s electric transition just took a meaningful step forward at the 2026 Chicago Auto Show, where the all-new BMW iX3 made its official U.S. debut, and quietly introduced one of the most important updates yet for American EV buyers: the NACS charging port.

This marks the first time BMW has shown a production version of the iX3 in both North American specification and equipped M Sport and Tesla’s Charging Standard (NACS) connector. It’s a small detail with big implications.

BMW Embraces NACS in the U.S. Starting with the iX3

The new iX3 will be BMW’s first U.S.-bound EV built on the Neue Klasse platform, bringing not only new architecture and improved range but also a new approach to charging infrastructure compatibility.

While BMW confirmed in 2023 that it would adopt the NACS plug starting in 2025, the iX3 shown in Chicago is the first physical look at the change. Located on the left rear quarter panel, the NACS port replaces the previously standard CCS port and will allow access to Tesla Superchargers across North America. Owners will be able to charge via the older CCS standard with an adapter.

This is more than a convenience feature, it’s a strategic move. Supercharger access has long been considered the gold standard for reliable, fast EV charging in the U.S., and BMW’s adoption of NACS will directly improve the usability and confidence of its EV lineup for American customers.

U.S.-Spec iX3: Built for American Needs

Unlike the previous-gen iX3 that was never offered in the U.S., this all new 2026 model is a full US spec BMW. But more than that it’s BMW’s first Neue Klasse EV promising improvements in range, performance, driving engagement and packaging.

the NACS Port And Why You Should Care

For EV shoppers in the U.S., charging access is one of the biggest deciding factors. With BMW joining other major OEMs in adopting NACS, the iX3 is positioned to be one of the most accessible premium electric SUVs in terms of public charging, especially for long-distance travel.

This also signals that future BMW EVs for North America, including the forthcoming Neue Klasse sedan, will feature NACS ports and native Supercharger access, reducing dependence on fragmented third-party charging networks.

Ocean Wave Blue

The exterior color on this example is what BMW calls Ocean Wave Blue. It’s an all new metallic option that is highly affected by lighting. As you can see in the two photos above, very subtle photo treatments bring out very different colors.

Our Take

The iX3 is a massive moment for BMW. Yes EV sales are down in the US due to the elimination of subsidies. But this one might just be good enough to make buyers forget about the money that’s no longer on the table. And crucially it sets the stage for what’s next – the full rollout of BMW’s future EVs including the electric 3 Series coming later this year.
