BMW patent

BMW has just been granted a patent detailing plans for a drivetrain that combines two internal combustion engines and an electric engine. The hybrid system involves a “split engine ” approach where the car is driven by one of the engines and the electric motor at low speeds (or while cruising at low RPM). Once more power is needed, the second engine starts and provides extra acceleration and performance.

While specifics are light within the document, there is a mention of both engines being two cylinder units. With BMW having such an excellent range of two cylinder engines from Motorrad, one could easily see this technology being leveraged in this way.
