The first BMW iX videos have dropped from BMW to help us wrap our heads around this entirely new product. Starting from scratch is something that rarely happens with a company like BMW. Seeing the results are fascinating but even more is how the designers and engineers created the car. Watch the full series below.

The BMW iX has an exterior design that feels at once familiar and strikingly modern. This isn’t a BMW with a giant grille attached like the recent 4 Series. The iX feels much more holistically modern and fresh in comparison.

Slim headlights upfront with a high belt line, the iX takes the modern BMW form language to another level in proportion and detail. And it’s the details that really matter here – frameless windows, a tailgate that extends across the entire car – BMW has clearly gone to great lengths to create something clean and elegant, masking its underlining complexity.

BMW iX Exterior

Slim headlights upfront with a high belt line, the iX takes the modern BMW form language to another level in proportion and detail. And it’s the details that really matter here – frameless windows, a tailgate that extends across the entire car – BMW has clearly gone to great lengths to create something clean and elegant, masking its underlining complexity.

That giant grille is not actually a grille on the iX but more of a window. Through it all of the car’s sensors, cameras and radar see the road, other cars and pedestrians allowing for higher autonomous driving than BMW has ever offered.

Somewhat surprisingly BMW is carrying on with the blue accents that were first introduced with the i3 and i8. And the Bronze Titanium launch harkens back to the original BMWi concepts over ten years ago. You can’t say BMW isn’t consistent but in our eyes it’s not the iX’s best look.

The effectiveness of this new form is evident in a Cd figure of only .25. And thanks to weight saving measures brought about by the “Carbon Cage” and plenty of aluminum, the iX promises to be one of the more efficient electric vehicles on the road when it’s launched late next year.

BMW iX Interior

That giant screen is actually two curved screens; a 12.3-inch and 14.9-inch with single-piece, frameless glass surface. As with all BMW iDrive systems it’s both touch and controlled by an MFD allowing for what BMW calls the safest system in the world.

BMW has taken steps to increase interior design levels with new materials and tech beyond the screen. The center console features an innovative new rocker switch for gear selection, a Touch Controller and an illuminated glass- effect control surface subdivided by feeler bars and with active haptic input for controlling various vehicle functions. Optional “Clear & Bold” specification includes surfaces in open-pore wood and controls with a polishedcrystal finish.

The market launch of the BMW iX is slated for the second half of 2021 globally. Specifications and pricing will be announced in the weeks and months ahead.
