The BMW Skytop Concept that wowed audiences at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is going on sale. And it’s already sold out.

BMW has revealed a new limited-edition model, the BMW Skytop, following the 2022 release of the BMW 3.0 CSL. The Skytop, a two-seater roadster, was first introduced as a design study at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in 2024, where it generated significant interest among car enthusiasts. In response to this reception, BMW has announced a production run of just 50 units.

Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design, confirmed the decision at an event in Milan, where the Skytop was again on display. All 50 units have already been spoken for by collectors and enthusiasts. Van Hooydonk described the Skytop as an “exotic design” that balances driving dynamics with elegance.

The Skytop continues BMW’s tradition of high-performance roadsters, joining a lineage that includes the BMW 507 and Z8. Powered by BMW’s now familiar S68 4.4-litre V8 engine producing 625 horsepower, it features an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive. The car accelerates from 0-100 km/h in around 3.3 seconds.

The BMW Skytop – New Found Elegance From BMW

The elegance and minimalism of the overall design language is striking on the Skytop. And it’s a welcome change from the busy and often overwrought designs we’ve seen from BMW in recent years. The simpler form language puts more emphasis on the proportion, size and the flowing shapes throughout. Then there’s the top which integrates the Hofmeister kink.

Adding to this is the minimal design of the lighting – almost impossibly discrete and elegant at times.

The Skytop is characterized by clean lines and muscular surfaces. Its exterior includes a distinctive grille, slim LED headlights, and retractable roof sections. Inside, craftsmanship and luxury materials dominate, with a colour scheme that transitions seamlessly between the interior and exterior unlike anything since the Z8.

The design of the BMW Skytop reflects its limited production status, featuring a clean and streamlined appearance. A prominent spline runs from the bonnet to the aluminium bar on the boot lid, giving the car a cohesive and dynamic form. The winglets integrated into the door shoulders replace conventional handles, while the light-alloy wheels with intricate detailing enhance its minimalist look. The illuminated BMW kidney grille and slim LED headlights—custom developed for this model—add to its modern front-end styling, while the slim rear lights continue this theme.

The interior design emphasizes a roadster experience, with features like a leather-covered rollover bar and a fully retractable rear window. The soft-top roof is trimmed in synthetic leather, with removable roof sections that can be stowed in the luggage compartment.

The colour scheme flows smoothly from the reddish-brown roof to the Floating Sundown Silver exterior paint, which features a chrome shadow effect. The paintwork, applied by hand, creates a striking visual transition.

Inside, the use of handpicked materials and a warm, monochrome palette create an atmosphere of comfort and refinement. The leather seats, accented with brogue-style detailing, match the roof’s colour. Crystal accents in the cockpit further enhance the cabin’s upscale feel.

Additional features include a soft-close function for the doors, a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, and BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional, which includes a head-up display projecting key driving information into the driver’s field of view.

The Skytop is officially sold out and not coming to the US. But don’t be surprised if some of the design concepts behind this car show-up in future models.
