The BMW iX made a bold statement about the brand’s electric ambitions when it was released in 2021. Unlike BMW’s other EV offerings, the iX was built on an electric-only platform (CLAR WE) and designed to spearhead the brand’s EV revolution. However, like any all-new product, it wasn’t without its flaws. For 2026, BMW is launching an LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) for the iX aimed at addressing initial feedback while offering more power and greater range. Does it deliver? We got behind the wheel of an early prototype to find out.

Exterior Tweaks Make a Big Impact

The iX’s design has always been divisive, particularly up front, where BMW’s oversized kidney grilles dominate the face. For 2026, the grille shape remains, but subtle changes to the front bumper and surrounding elements soften its visual impact.

As we approached the new, undisguised prototype (which we sadly can’t show you), it was immediately clear that BMW had taken customer feedback to heart. The styling is sharper in some areas and softer in others, creating a more cohesive and refined look. There’s an undeniable connection to the Neue Klasse concept cars, particularly in the redesigned headlights, which echo the dynamic qualities of BMW’s future design language. Meanwhile, the new M Sport Pro package adds subtle touches—plenty of gloss black trim—that give the car a more aggressive edge.

Fortunately, you don’t have to spring for the M Sport Pro to enjoy an upgraded appearance. BMW has refined the previously available sport package by making most elements body-colored and standard across the range.

Elsewhere, the exterior stays true to the iX’s bold and futuristic design language. Love it or hate it, the silhouette remains instantly recognizable, and the updates ensure the 2026 model doesn’t stray far from the original design intent.

Efficiency: Small Changes, Big Impact

BMW has achieved an approximately 10% increase in range across all iX models through a combination of software updates and hardware tweaks. The xDrive50 is now the xDrive60, with 536 hp and an estimated 330 miles of EPA range. At the top of the lineup, the xDrive60 M60 becomes the xDrive70, boasting 650 hp and an estimated 315 miles of range. Even the entry-level xDrive45 now offers 402 hp and 285 miles of EPA range. Charging speeds remain at 195 kW for the two higher trims and 175 kW for the xDrive45.

How did BMW improve both power and range? Engineers focused on efficiency with revised drivetrain software, improved processors, and other optimizations. Cold-weather charging has also been enhanced, and the iX will now offer an optional heat pump to boost efficiency in lower temperatures.

Handling: Familiar DNA, New Layers of Engagement

Driving the original iX could feel disjointed. The M60 delivered immense speed, but the flat, undersized seats and lack of feedback made piloting the car feel more like steering a spacecraft than driving a high-performance BMW. BMW clearly listened to the critiques, addressing nearly every pain point in the 2026 update. Even the steering wheel is now optionally round.

The iX  benefits from several suspension upgrades. The wheel bearings have been revised, while other tweaks to the chassis and electronics have improved driving dynamics. A new hydraulic rear axle bearing enhances ride comfort without compromising handling precision, resulting in a smoother experience over rougher surfaces.

The optional M Sport brake system, now featuring red calipers and M logos, provides sharper stopping power.

Out on the road, the changes are subtle but meaningful. BMW has increased the separation between Comfort and Sport modes. In Comfort, the iX feels plush and composed, soaking up road imperfections with ease. The steering remains light but precise, and the updated seats further enhance comfort.

Switching to Sport mode firms up the dampers and weights the steering, making the iX feel more planted and responsive. While it’s still no canyon carver, the iX is surprisingly engaging for a heavy electric SUV. More than before, it strikes an ideal balance between performance and refinement for EV buyers who value both luxury and driving engagement.

Interior: Now With Real Seats

Arguably, the most significant improvement in the 2026 iX lies within the cabin. One of the biggest complaints about the outgoing model was its flat, undersized seats, which felt inadequate, especially for taller drivers. BMW has resolved this with new optional M multifunction seats, offering better lateral support and longer seat cushions. The result is a driving position that feels both sportier and more accommodating, allowing you to focus on driving rather than adjusting for comfort.

BMW has also expanded the interior material options. Buyers can now choose from Dynamica/Sensatec perforated upholstery or optional natural leather, elevating the premium feel of the cabin. Additional upgrades include a two-tone instrument panel, M-specific trim in Dark Silver, and an anthracite headliner, particularly for the M Sport models.

An Increase in Standard & Optional Features

BMW has equipped the updated iX with noticeably more standard features. Highlights include heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an advanced alarm system, and a Harman Kardon surround sound system. Optional features include a new light carpet welcome system, creating a futuristic effect as drivers approach the vehicle.

The iX’s semi-autonomous features have also been enhanced. The Highway Assistant now offers Level 2+ functionality, including active lane changes with gaze confirmation, ensuring drivers stay engaged while using the system. Meanwhile, the Parking Assistant Professional enables smartphone-controlled parking and maneuvering—a handy feature for tight spaces.

Early Verdict

The 2026 BMW iX is less about radical reinvention and more about thoughtful refinement. By addressing key criticisms like seating, improving efficiency, and refining both the interior and exterior, BMW has transformed the iX into a more complete and compelling product.

While it may still divide opinions with its bold design, the 2026 iX now feels like it’s grown into its skin, offering a blend of performance, luxury, and cutting-edge tech that becomes a bit more compelling. It took a few years but BMW is slowly but steadily iterating on its vision for the electric future—and this time, it’s nailed many more of the details.
