After a very long break we’re back with another big show. First up we recap the last two months of BMW news starting of course with the 6er Gran Coupe and then quickly moving onto the F30 and next generation M3. We round out the news with some thought on DTM and the future of BMW’s racing programs. But this show is all about our personal highs and lows of the year with Michael and I dishing a few surprises.
Here’s the full list of news recapped (after the break).

On January 9th 2012 the automotive world will converge on Cabo Hall, Detroit Michigan (like in Frankfurt above). This coming North American International Auto Show is going to be a spectacular event, not for the venue itself but for the number of production cars making world premieres as well as the Concept cars that will shape the future landscape of automobiles as we known them.
From the American big three to the Germans and Japanese, each company from those respective nations is said to be showing something that will come to market within the next year. BMW, not to be upstaged by the competition has some significant vehicles that will make their first appearances as well as showcasing the future of the BMW brand in North America. The following is what we believe to make appearances.

Does the way you break in a car really matter? We’ve been asked that question many times over the years by readers. There are two popular schools of thought. The first is that you strictly follow the manufacturers guidelines and go easy. The idea is that this allows for the various mechanicals to be properly ‘bedded in’ and for wear to happen gradually.
The second is that you simply drive the car how you would normally from day one. Here the idea is that you’re breaking in the car by treating to a heavy does of normalcy.
For us the answer has always been easy. If German engineers suggest you go easy on a car they’ve engineered, we suggest you follow their advice. But what about M cars? We know that M cars demand a 1,200 miles service at the close of break-in. But what else is specific to M models? We talked to a BMW about to see if there were some specifics that, while not in the manual, are good guidelines to follow. What they told us expanded on the manual and gave us a lot of the reasoning behind the rules (along with a few new ones to follow). You can see the entire list after the break.

One of our absolute favorites sites about one of our absolute favorite places in the world captured a pair of new 6 Series this week getting some fine tuning. Bridge to Gantry caught prototypes of both the M6 and the 6 Series xDrive doing some hot laps on the ‘Ring. After seeing the two cars in person attack the famous track here’s their take:
These photos are from Wipperman, where cars must transition from one lateral loading to the next at over 80mph, over cambers and kerbs. The red 6-er here wasn’t worried at all.

Our favorite inside and public tipster Scott27 (or Herr26 here on BF) is at it again with some well placed leaks / rumors about the M6, a tri-turbo diesel and the 6 Series Gran Sport.
(The following story contains excerpts from Scott27′s post at GCF)
First let’s start with the triple diesel coming across the range of premium large BMW cars.
Following on from an LCi of the BMW X6 in March 2012 @ Geneva. The new BMW 6er Gran Coupe will receive the all new and much discussed Tri-Turbo diesel which will be found in the BMW X6xDrive50d with 354PS.

Through various sources it’s become clear that M has plans to expand it’s line-up from the traditional 3-4 products. Crucial to this are the X5 and X6 M twins. With the Chinese, Russian and Brazilian markets showing dramatic appetite for big M cars, it’s clear that there’s a lot of market share to gain and profit to be hand. For instance China’s M sales grew 355% alone last year. That kind of number doesn’t go unnoticed in Munich.
Because of this M is likely looking to add another M SAV to the mix. However whether that’s an X3, the forthcoming X4 and even a hot version of the X1 is still up in the air. There’s even talk of a X1 iS has to help bridge the gap. But the future story of M is also about getting back to its basics and not forgetting about the enthusiasts that they’ve traditionally relied on.

Our favorite automotive artist Jon Sibal is once again looking into the future. This it’s the F12 M6 Convertible. And can we just say, it’s one part gorgeous and another part nasty. We love it.

Over a year and a half ago (August 2009) we reported that the next generation M5 and M6 may be ditching the manual option and going auto only. But why would M be going backwards into the land of torque converting auto transmissions and not choosing the DCT? Clearly the dual clutch transmission is the future of high performance automobiles right?
